My offhand analysis of why tumblr usamericans are falling so hard for the 4b movement currently is that’s it’s straightforward vicarious revanchism, and you tend to see this sort of thing a lot with people who vaguely call themselves “leftists” but have no framework of material analysis and work solely off of vibes. The fact that it’s in a colonial outpost they can condescend to makes it even easier for them to indulge in the fantasy of it from afar

it makes me feel like a wild chimpanzee truly the total lack of any analytical framework that's being demonstrated. the amount of people in the notes of my post falling over themselves to go well ok so clearly there's rampant transmisogyny but maybe all those terfs found their way into this movement by accident. maybe political lesbianism is not inherently transmisogynistic? maybe bioessentialism is fine actually and sound material analysis? did anyone consider that?

like, i wanted to choose excerpts from lee hyun-jae's article focusing on specific real-life instances of transmisogyny to add in the post, but frankly i'm not even sure people read those. and they certainly didn't digest the display of blatantly trans exclusionary politics that are central to mainstream korean feminism. (which actively prevent the movement from critically understanding much less dismantling the mechanisms of patriarchy.) hooray those poor oppressed women in that terribly backwards country are standing up for themselves! well of course we can't expect them to care about trans women, they can't possibly have Our Expansive Gender Understanding and it's unreasonable to ask them to share their hard-earned resources with fake women uhhh people who can't hope to understand their struggle uhhhh let's circle around to that. how exciting that those people over there are Doing Something despite their horrific ignorance! isn't that inspirational for us enlightened people over here?

I really enjoyed reading your writing on the 4b movement because Ive had... feelings about that I havent been able to elaborate. theres been this general framing by some folks that transmisogyny and radfems/terfs/gendercriticals (whatever theyre calling themselves nowadays) dont exist in feminist movements outside of the states. when 'radical' acts like this are done that its actually in cable of being transphobic and transmisogynistic because somehow that can only exist in the us of a. dunno. thanks for speaking on it and spreading the info.

again, i have to say that i'm not especially knowledgeable or well-read about korean politics or feminist movements - but even with cursory knowledge, or just like, reading comprehension and basic concern about transmisogyny, it should be apparent that the 4B movement is trans exclusionary political lesbianism. we don't need to import that to the us. there have already been people advocating for political lesbianism, historically, in the us. it's fundamentally transmisogynistic and it's not effective feminist praxis.

and yeah it's difficult to articulate but there's an attitude towards the politics of non-western countries that is often, like, patronizing/condescending and refuses to understand them as anything but one-dimensional. the reactionary misogyny in south korea is pronounced and vile (true!) so the militant radical feminists opposing them must be good and aspirational (...swing and a miss!). (and presupposing that there aren't any other schools of feminist thought in south korea, much less queer/transfeminists.) and like, as if the deeply conservative us puppet state neocolony doesn't have heavy western influence in its reactionary politics. sometimes it is best to shut up and stop talking 👍

Although I don't doubt that there is transmisogyny in Korean feminist movements, as there is in all feminist movements to some degree, I think a disclaimer about the Korean "men's rights" movements attacking women by claiming they are every bad thing imaginable, including haters of trans people, is appropriate. Their persistent smear campaigns are infamous for the false and ridiculous claims made.

Quotations because the men's right movement is openly and severely misogynistic (as well as homophobic and transphobic), a reactionary movement that exists to fight objectively good things like equality in work and politics and anti-molestation laws.
