12 Days of Taimizu || Summer Taimizu Week

Hello, everyone! We are happy to announce an upcoming Taimizu Week planned for Summer 2024, based around the romantic pairing of Taigen/Mizu from Blue Eye Samurai!

This is open for anyone and everyone to participate, whether in the form of art, fics, AMVs, graphics, gifs, headcanons, playlists, meta essays, or anything else—as long as it's something you made! All skill levels and level of work detail are encouraged to participate.

The event will run from June 2nd - June 13th, with the following prompts:

on mizu's gender and her relationships

with mikio she felt like a woman. she loved as a woman and was happy then, but ultimately betrayed. it'd make sense for her to not wanna really live as a woman, at least in a wife sense.

all taigen knows is mizu the man who can fight, but i think the more he gets to know her, taigen does and can recognize that mizu's a person outside of that. when they spar for the second time mizu's happy the way she was happy with mikio, but taigen doesn't bash her for her for being yk skilled and actually so dope and cracked and awesome. he fights back. he likes it. he fights back because he likes it and he likes to And he likes Her.

but that's all while mizu is seen as a man, and taigen doesn't know about yk mizu's bits and parts yet😭 i think mizu can enjoy herself as a man with taigen, but i also think so as a woman. i think taigen loves and will love mizu no matter what the fuck she is, whether it be determined man or boyish woman or both or neither or everything and anything cos taigen is whiiiiiiped he would not gaf either way ( and it's funny cos mizu doesn't gaf or have the time or urgency to gaf about her gender anyway )

i use she because im a d word and need mizu like a tweaker needs their fix lol but mizu's a girl that's a boy that's a girlking tomboywife yass queen ok king girlking everything and neither at the same time waaiiiit wait now that i say that last part mizu bes and gren bebop parallels???? ok its just the nonbinary part cos their like lore is not the same but maybe i'll think on That more later

In his pursuit of Mizu, Taigen finally makes it to London as well. He ends up learning more than he bargained for.

Chapter 1

London is a miserable place, covered in fog and soot and shit, the sky constantly overcast.

Taigen has been here for a week, and not seen the sun a single day. Most of the time, it has been raining too, turning the smaller roads into rivers of mud and sewage. The main streets are decked out in uneven cobblestone that become dangerously slippery in the damp. He has already had to exchange his wooden geta for softer zōri sandals, to avoid making an ass of himself. 

It’s bad enough that people are staring at him wherever he goes; he doesn’t need them to take him for a fool as well as a foreigner. 

Is this how Mizu feels, he wonders, each prodding gaze like pinpricks on his skin. He hears people whispering to each other, laughing sometimes, but he knows only a handful of words in their confounding language. Are they insulting him, ridiculing him, or do his paranoid ears just misinterpret the gibberish?

Round eyes, wherever he looks, always already staring back at him, so he keeps his back straight and his gait steady, and silently dares anyone to openly challenge him.

What would he do if they did, he wonders, with his hands on the heft of his broken sword. He may be a master of the blade, but what good will it do him here, where men carry revolvers concealed in their jackets. He has seen what a bullet can do to even the sharpest of katana, and he does not wish to experience what it would feel like to have one ripping into his flesh.

It’s a small mercy that, unlike Japan, the island of England has not closed its borders. In fact, they have done the very opposite, sending their ships and their guns into the rest of the world. After all, the greed of the white man knows no bounds.

As such, while Kyoto has always had something of a butterfly to it - beautiful and delicate and each part lovingly crafted - London is more of a centipede: a squirming, restless mass of feet, dark and disgusting and poorly fitting together.

But it also means that, while Taigen sticks out like a sore thumb in his uwagi and hakama, he is by far not the only foreigner to walk these streets. The port in particular had been swarming with people of all sorts, some of whom Taigen would have mistaken for old wives’ tales not so long ago.

He has seen tall strong men with faces as dark as coal and hair as coarse as wire brushes. He had watched a small group of people disembark a ship, whose skin was smooth like brass and who clad themselves in garments of leather, with feathers woven into their long braids. Once or twice, Taigen had caught the eye of such a stranger and felt a peculiar sense of kinship with them.

I, too, am far from home, he wanted to say. I, too, feel like a mute child on these unfamiliar shores.

Taigen’s love confession NEEDS to come before he finds out Mizu is a woman.

Listen. I have given this a lot of thought and the more I think about it, the more I’m sure. When looking at Mizu and Mikio’s marriage, we can see how Mikio was in to the idea of a strong woman only so far as he was still stronger than her. This is clear when Mikio insists that he wants to “see all of [mizu]” and insists that they spar; Mikio doesn’t unsheath his blade even though Mizu tell him not to hold back. He assumes he is stronger than her and when this is proven false, like the beta bitch he is, he bails.

But with Taigen it’s different. Mizu and Taigen’s relationship has been a power struggle from the start. Taigen wasn’t introduced to Mizu as a woman or a wife. Taigen has always seen Mizu as a swordsman first. And when the hostility between the two starts to cool, it is because of their mutual admiration of the other’s skill. Mizu’s strength and boldness are what win Taigen over in the first place.

We also see a very important juxtapose between when Mizu pins Mikio to the ground and when she pins Taigen to the ground. In the first instance, Mikio pushes Mizu off him and calls her a monster. He feels put off and emasculated by being overpowered. In the Mizu/Taigen scene, however, once Mizu has Taigen pinned, he stares, awestruck, into Mizu’s eyes and gets a raging hard on. Instead of feeling emasculated, Taigen get so aroused that he has a full blown bi awakening.

So we know that Taigen is different to Mikio in that he is attracted to Mizu BECAUSE she can kick his ass, not in spite of it. But Mizu has been burned before. Badly. So if Taigen were to confess his feelings and tell Mizu that her strength is what he adores most about her, she’d be like, “right, sure, heard that one before.” And that’s why Taigen needs to confess his feelings BEFORE he finds out what’s in Mizu’s pants.

In my daydreaming about a Migen love confession, I find myself reminded of this quote. How Mikio was like the exotic bird collector. He only liked the idea of Mizu knowing her way around a sword so long as at the end of the day, he can still put her back into the caged-in roll of the house wife.

Taigen is also guilty of this with Akemi. I sure there is still no small amount of attraction and love between them, but I think Taigen pursues Akemi mostly out of the personal fable he has written about himself; the poor fisherman’s son who raises himself up to be the star of his Dojo and then marries a princess. He might not have wanted to cage Akemi as much as other men would have, but he still sees her as the exotic bird. The prize. And thats why I can’t ship them.

But with Mizu it’s different. Taigen even admits that Mizu is a better fighter than him. He KNOWS he could never cage her and by the end on the first season he strops trying, opting to stand beside her instead of against her (“it’s your fight, so it’s mine” 😭) So when he does confess his feelings, he has to do is as one man to another and make it clear to Mizu that her strength is what he loves most and that he would never want her to be anything less then the superior swordsman she is.

Only then will Mizu have a chance of believing that Taigen wants to be with her, not to subdue her into a wifely role, but to stand beside her in all her greatness. If Taigen’s confession were to come after he finds out she’s a woman, Mizu might just think, “oh, NOW you want to be with me, cause you think just because I’m a woman I’ll eventually submit to you.” Mizu needs to know she is loved AS SHE IS.

Also, I just think it would be HILLARIOUS if Taigen confesses, and Mizu is like, “ well then….. I guess I should let you know…” and then Taigen spends the rest of the episode with his mind fucking BLOWN and complaining that he has spent the last several months coming to terms with the fact that he is attracted to another man only to find out the man he is attracted to is a woman! He goes through a whole bi awakening for nothing!

Mizu/Taigen can work...

I'm pretty pleased with Taigen's growth so far. I didn't expect to like his character, but by the end, I did.

That being said, if Mizu and Taigen do end up together, I really hope it's a slowburn emotionally well-written subplot. Like Jane Austen slowburn. I love Taigen as a character, but he needs to go through a little more.
