#motogp 2022 one third stats
MotoGP 2022 1/3: Qualifying
One third into the MotoGP 2022 season, and a lot of talk has been made of qualifying. That's a reason why I wanted to make a post focusing on the qualifying, particularly when it comes to different manufacturers and how they are doing. This one doesn't have as structured format as the other posts, but just listing off different stats.
Poles and front row starts
Starting off, there have been 5 different pole sitters so far: Jorge Martín (2), Fabio Quartararo (1), Aleix Espargaró (1), Johann Zarco (1) and Francesco Bagnaia (2).
-> Ducati has taken 71% of the pole positions so far, with Yamaha and Aprilia taking the other two.
Adding on to that, 10 different riders have qualified to the front row: Jorge Martín (4), Enea Bastianini (1), Marc Márquez (1), Fabio Quartararo (2), Johann Zarco (2), Aleix Espargaró (4), Luca Marini (1), Jack Miller (2), Francesco Bagnaia (3) and Joan Mír (1)
-> Ducati has taken most of the front rows with 62%, Aprilia the second with 19%, Yamaha 9% with Suzuki and Honda both around ~5% with one front row start per each.
The magical 'front two rows'
Listening to any rider talk about qualifying, the target is always the two front rows from p1 to p6. Out of the 24 full time riders, 14 of them have started at least one race from inside these two rows. Fabio Quartararo has started there the most, with only one qualifying position lower than p6. Here's how the numbers go for each manufacturer:
57% (24/42) were filled by Ducati's bikes 14% (6/42) were Yamaha's Quartararo 14% (6/42) were by Aprilia's bikes 10% (4/42) were Honda's bikes 2,5% (1/42) was a KTM 2/5% (1/42) was a Suzuki
Who made it to Q2?
In the seven grad prix this season so far, only two riders have been a part of every q2 session. They are Fabio Quartararo and Jack Miller. Four of the full-time riders have not yet gotten through to q2, they are the WithU Yamaha RNF MotoGP Team riders and the Tech3 KTM Factory Racing riders. Jorge Martín has gone to qualifying 2 most through qualifying 1, twice so far. Here's how the 84 q2 spots this season have divided between the different bike manufacturers:
41,7% (35) for Ducati 17,9% (15) for Honda 13,1% (11) for Suzuki 10,7% (9) for Yamaha 9,5% (8) for Aprilia 7,1% (6) for KTM
What about the actual time differences?
Well, this part is just to list the average time the riders from each team are off the ultimate pole position time. In these calculations I omit the wet qualifying results, because wet sessions throw curveballs and you might get q1 times faster than the ultimate pole position time, for example, and that isn't really reflective of the pace on average. There are influencing factors to every qualifying session naturally, so this isn't the one true reflection of the rider's one lap pace, rather than a tool to compare between larger periods of time.
Here are the riders for each manufacturer, listed in championship order and how far off the eventual pole position time they were on the qualifying lap that set the order on average:
Ducati
Jack Miller + 0.464 seconds Francesco Bagnaia + 0.315 seconds Johann Zarco + 0.654 seconds Jorge Martín + 0.390 seconds Enea Bastianini + 0.618 seconds Fabio Di Giannantonio + 1.292 seconds Luca Marini + 0.986 seconds Marco Bezzecchi + 0.936 seconds

MotoGP 2022 1/3: Riders' Championship
Seen as we are officially one third into the new MotoGP season, I thought I'd collect a few statistics so far from the season. First up we have just the riders' championship with the averages in races, qualifying and points per race so far.
I'd like to note that all of these stats are just for fun and they are naturally context dependent and open for interpretation. Because the sample size is so small (only seven races) one result changes up the averages a lot. Still, I personally find these a useful tool when thinking about the championship so far and how we got here.
terminology explained:
q. avg - the average qualifying position pole + front rows - poles + starting places on front two rows q2 - the number of appearances in q2 r. avg - the average finish in races that the rider finished, DNF’s not included ppr - points per race, out of all races finished how many points scored on average wins + podium - number of wins + number of 2nds and 3rds dnf - the number of retirements * - anything to add, like missed races, team changes etc
Rider's Championship, after the French GP:
