Project One Research
The Bauhaus lamp was chosen for its uniqueness of style (in that it favours form as equal or greater to function) and for it’s situatedness; it being produced before swiveling table-lamps were popular but after gas lamps were deprecated (Droste, 1997, pg 32).
The lamp has a complex history being that it is a student project of the Bauhaus and has been influnced by several designers; this history means that there is no one “absolute” version of the lamp, and bits and pieces have interchangeably been made in metal and glass, framed in steel, enclosed in glass and so on. Versions available on the market today (or indeed since it’s release) reflect these characteristics in the distinctions they each have from one another. This has the effect of enabling the lamp to morph in scale or proportion to suit one companies manufacturing method; and yet despite these nuances the lamp is still clearly distinguishable in the basic shapes and forms it uses.
The poster for project one was inspired by Herbert Beyers 1925 brochure advertisement for the Bauhaus Lamp (Metropress, 2016).
The fonts were chosen based on appropriateness and connection to Herbert Beyer’s work; FF Bau was chosen to mimic as close as possible the body text on the 1925 brochure (the original font not being freely available).
The following links and references are suppplemental to the poster, no photo credits were listed on the poster.
