Lil Nas X's 'Old Town Road' Is The Longest Leading No. 1 Hit Of All Time, Surpasses Mariah Carey's 20-Year Record
From social media fame to making history on the music charts! Lil Nas X just dethroned Mariah Carey's 20-year record and now has the longest leading No. 1 hit of all time! More inside...
Who would have thought "Old Town Road" would be out here breaking music records. Especially, dethroning a musical diva like Mariah Carey.
A year ago, hardly anyone knew who 20-year-old rapper/social media influencer Lil Nas X was. Now, everyone is "riding till they can't no more."
The Atlanta artist's track "Old Town Road," featuring country singer Billy Ray Cyrus - which went viral on the Tik Tok video app - just broke the record for the longest consecutive run at the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Over 28,000 songs have debuted on the #Hot100 in its 60-year history.
1,086 songs have hit No. 1.
38 songs have spent 10+ weeks No. 1.
3 songs have spent 15+ weeks at No. 1.
1 song has spent 17+ weeks at No. 1: @LilNasX ft. @billyraycyrus, "Old Town Road"

"Old Town Road" sat at the No. 1 spot for 17 consecutive weeks. Folks thought Taylor Swift's single "Me!" was going to knock Lil Nas X down a notch when she dropped the song, but nope!
Billboard reports:
As on the Hot 100, "Road" (on Columbia Records) leads the Streaming Songs chart for a 17th week, another record-breaking mark, topping the 16-week run of "Despacito." "Road" rules Streaming Songs with 72.5 million U.S. streams, down 16%, in the week ending July 25, according to Nielsen Music. "Road" set the record for the top streaming week (143 million) following the April 5 arrival of its remix solely with Cyrus (who has been billed on 16 of the song's 17 weeks atop the Hot 100) and claims nine of the 11 biggest streaming frames to date, including the top three.
Helping its total this week, a meta-named "Week 17 Version" video of "Road" premiered on July 19. The clip truncates the song’s official music video, released May 17, by removing various skits that feature guest cameos from Chris Rock and others.

Lil Nas X received the news while he was on the toilet, but that didn't stop him from uploading a thank you message to everyone who made the moment possible:

last year in october , as a struggling artist starting to lose faith in what i could be, i went looking for beats on youtube. i remember clicking on so many generic sounding beats trying to find the right one for me. when suddenly i came across a country-trap sounding masterpiece. i immediately knew i would make something special out of it! my sister told me i had little time left before i had to leave her house after being there for months promoting my music online and not helping her out much. i was so upset! i used it as motivation for the song! i jokingly/seriously saw myself as a loner cowboy needing to run away from it all! I went out on my sister’s back porch and listened to the beat OVER & OVER & OVER!! then it came to me!! in my best singing voice i sung “YEAHHH IM GONNA TAKE MY HORSETO THE OLD TOWN ROAD IM GONNA RIDEEEE TIL I CANT NO MORE ” I LOVED IT ALREADY! i started to work on it EVERY SINGLE DAY. it needed to be funny, it needed to be catchy, it needed to be hip hop, it needed to be country, & it needed to be short!! by the time i was finished setting it up i was out of my sister’s crib and at my brothers place. on december 2nd i went into the studio & recorded OLD TOWN ROAD & put it out the exact same day!! did i know it would become the longest running number 1 song of all time? NO! ‼️ but i am so thankful that this blessing has been placed upon me. this song has changed my life and the way i see the world around me in less than a year. thank you to every single person who has been apart of this journey. as i said before, it’s just the beginning!

"Old Town Road" beat the previous record of 16 weeks first achieved by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's "One Sweet Day," in 1995-96, and later matched by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito," featuring Justin Bieber in 2017.
Lil Nas X paid homage to MiMi on Twitter after snatching her crown:
A few weeks ago, Lil Nas X hopped on Twitter to shoot his shot at getting Mariah Carey on a remix and she responded with a "One Sweet Day" x "Old Town Road" collaboration title:

If this isn't the best revenge served on a platter. You'll recall, Billboard yanked the track from the Hot Country chart, claiming at the time the song did "not embrace enough elements of today’s country music to chart in its current version.” Now, here we are.
Congrats!
In not-so-great news...
Lil Nas X and Sony Music have been hit with a $25 million lawsuit! His song "Carry On" apparently infringes on the rights of another song of the same name, so The Music Force is suing for millions worth of damage.
THR reports:
TMF is suing for copyright infringement and is asking the court to determine that Lil Nas X's "Carry On" is a joint work. The company wants at least $10 million in damages to remedy "confusion in the marketplace" that it alleges completely destroyed the value of its property, as well as at least $15 million in punitive damages.
Damn homie.
