because I’m a bit dumb, a couple weeks ago it dawned on me, while watching jacobs ladder I think , why all 80s action films (predator, rambo, aliens) take place in some kind of jungle. Why the “treacherous jungle” is just the place where action happens. I wonder how many action movies I’ve seen in my childhood that took place in some kind of mysterious, hostile desert and it absolutely didn’t have to, and I just accepted it . How many bad guys were evil desert people, for some reason, and everyone growing up post 9/11 like me just accepted it as a film trope, not parsing out why it had changed from the evil europeans that were the bad guys in 90s action film. I was barely conscious when the propaganda was hitting my brain and I’m still kind of unpacking how many things I accepted as true about the military/america/everything are outright lies or consciously changed post 9/11 and are not necessarily inherent. So I’m kind of envious of people who were adults when it happened and can kind of. Make sense of how things changed. Because it’s wild to realize that I actually have no idea how different the world could have been before I was born, and have to learn from records/word of mouth. Like misinformation and racist distortion of reality could happen in my lifetime? Being propagandized as a child? little ole me? Idk it’s crazy to realize . Even sadder to think about millions of others who grew up like me and won’t make it out the distortion
