i kinda forgot how good ‘the night is for hunting’ is??? like it is a filler book really in terms of plot and it doesn’t have the same level of action as some of the other books, but also it’s got some lovely character moments

i can’t stop thinking about ellie and homer’s friendship and how they are like…….. BEST FRIENDS who also kinda like each other but most of all their souls are just…… it’s like they’re soulmates whether platonically or romantically (or sexually tbh bc i think they are just friends who’d like each other that way but not romantically lmao) BUT I DIGRESS they love each other and as ellie often says (in between thinking he’s hot and being jealous of fi lmaooo) he is like a brother in terms of growing up together and how close they are and how when homer would start to get too wild, SHE was the only one who could bring him back to ground and tell him to knock it off and i think of:

k get ready for a ramble about the twtwb series that only the old mutuals from the twtwb days will even like, follow along with (love you guys <3), BUT i have emotions and vibes and i’m gonna go for it <3<3<3<3

homer’s speech at the start of ‘the dead of the night’ is such an interesting insight into this boy. the way he just takes on so much leadership throughout the whole first book, and now things Have gone a little south. they had their big win with the bridge, and then corrie got shot and so kevin and corrie left for the hospital, and like….. thing’s have been shit. and then homer drops this beautiful speech about how he’s just really figured it out now. that fear and courage “…it’s all in your head.” and then he mentions how you can’t learn it at school or from a book (two things he struggled with before the war bc of a lack of interest), but that “It’s something you train your mind to do.” like, he’s the character that right from day dot was brave and thinking practically, simultaneously making people feel better while also helping come up with some brilliant plans using stuff he’s learned through his life on the farm, not in school. and then he’s in this informal ‘meeting’ with the others, and everyone’s been down in the dumps, and you can just see that he’s been thinking about this for so long. when it’s been quiet, when he’s been doing all these wild things that are totally out of the realm of logic, and he’s doing what he’s always done. like, homer suddenly is considering everything. this massive horrible world in front of them, and it’s partly him trying to inspire the others, partly him thinking to himself and analysing what he’s been doing since the start, and then he says, “Being brave is a choice to make. You’ve got to say to yourself: I’m going to think brave. I refuse to think fear or panic.” he’s SO BRAVE because he is always trying to take himself out of his head and look logically despite having emotions that run so so deep, and then, “Every time we think brave, we make ourselves stronger.” like, the circumstances are horrible, but homer, my lovely darling boy homer who, as ellie says in the first book ‘couldn’t even be trusted to hand out the books at school’, is like “i am going to give an inspirational speech that is So Good”

anyway homer with his pranks and teasing and insults and fucking ‘greek roulette’ and purposeful shit-stirring, is just so emotionally intelligent on a lot of levels, even tho as a whole he has some..... well sometimes he sucks at the emotional stuff. but like, i often think about how interesting these books would have been from his perspective, bc like, he and ellie sort of share the lead in coming up with plans. they both come across as ‘the leader’ but i think homer more than ellie sometimes, like right from the start he saw them begin to flounder and took the lead. pushed back his own emotions, started to ‘think brave’. and i really think that perspective of him as ‘leader’ would be so interesting?!?!?!?! we only get these little insights from ellie’s perspective as the narrator, and that just…… like, i want to know what’s going on inside his brain!! we see little moments of panic, especially earlier on, like when homer and ellie find robyn just after lee gets shot and ellie describes him as holding onto robyn in a panicked state almost, like he isn’t doing it as a hug necessarily but as sort of…. confirmation that she’s there?? as a need to hold someone and feel someone is there???? they aren’t even really friends, i mean robyn and homer have so very little in common before this except some mutual friends and school, but he grabs onto her at this early stage in horrible circumstances. and then there’s his whole crush on fi!!!! the way he just falls deep so so quickly, and he genuinely changes for her bc he a) feels like “a greek peasant” compared to her (which no baby) and then her little ‘i love you’ at the end of the first book before the bridge scene where he does the little ‘i love you’ back in a tiny and almost embarrassed voice like he is such a darling who would do anything for those that he loves and he just TRIES that is all homer ever does. he is like the epitome of ‘give it a go because doing nothing is worse’ and asdjdfjgdjfgjdfg there is no point to this ramble just me talking about my fav <3<3<3<3
