Mary is snarky and it’s great, but her dialogue is too modern. Pick a lane film! (Wait, she’s a super snob. Hmm, dislike)

“… realizing you’ve got much further to fall” and then she trips and falls? Way to force the joke Netflix. Booo

Lyme beach. Beautiful. Love when music, setting and cinematography can distract from a mediocre film

Not quite love confessions where someone looks nauseous? Peak period romance. 11/10

Ahh yes. We have reached the bang-their-heads-together portion of the romance film. Idiots.

Wentworth is full sad puppy suffering. Elliot is scheming and dreaming. And this freaking bunny keeps popping up for no reason. Wtf.

Ninety Minutes to End

Okay. So. This is where I mention that I have never read the book, so a direct comparison for plot and characterization purposes isn’t possible. I do like a good period romance film though.

Having seen the 2007 BBC version, I’m a bit confused about the plot. Is it a romantic comedy or a drama? Is the protagonist supposed to be that witty? I dunno. I have now seen two very different versions of the same story.

Should you watch the Netflix adaptation? Ehhh. It’s a period rom-com (?) that occasionally remembers it should be using dialogue similar to Austen’s. The dialogue and characterizations can’t decide which era to belong to - modern or regency. Reviewers and book-faithful folks are trashing it. If you need something easy to watch and don’t mind copious amounts of Dakota Johnson, then you’ll be fine here.

I’m in no rush to see that again. We can talk about it again in 5 years or so. The question now is which pallet cleanser - North & South or old faithful Pride & Prejudice? 🤔
