Alrighty! Weā€™re live blogging the new Netflix Persuasion film! Mild spoilers ahead!
Start to Thirty Minutes
Loving the set design of Kellynch Hall
The 4th wall breakage is nice so far
ā€œHe made me a playlistā€ girl, what?
Weā€™re rating people on a 1-10 scale?? In a period film?
I like Mrs. Croft! Please donā€™t mess her up!
Uppercross. Also a pretty set, if a bit plainer
Iā€™m sorry, youā€™re an empath?? In the 1800s??
Awkward reunion ftw! Bonus points for the jam-stache
Thirty to Sixty Minutes
Is it supposed to be? A rom-com? I thought Persuasion was more drama
Fourth Wall Monologues should be straight from the book! ā€œWeā€™re worse than strangers, weā€™re exesā€? Pretty sure that ainā€™t Austen
Mary is snarky and itā€™s great, but her dialogue is too modern. Pick a lane film! (Wait, sheā€™s a super snob. Hmm, dislike)
ā€œā€¦ realizing youā€™ve got much further to fallā€ and then she trips and falls? Way to force the joke Netflix. Booo
Lyme beach. Beautiful. Love when music, setting and cinematography can distract from a mediocre film
Not quite love confessions where someone looks nauseous? Peak period romance. 11/10
Sixty to Ninety Minutes
Thatā€™s the biggest picnic basket Iā€™ve ever seen. Goodness. That thingā€™s Texas sized. (said the Texan)
Back to the rating people? Weā€™ve been over this. Bad film.
Look! The part of Bath thatā€™s in every. single. period. film. (Bc itā€™s so fancy!)
Yessss Henry Goulding. Lay the charm on thick. Verbal period sparring is so much fun to watch.
Anneā€™s finest frock is black. Like death. Love the metaphor that sheā€™d rather be dead than be at this meeting.
Ahh yes. We have reached the bang-their-heads-together portion of the romance film. Idiots.
Look! Idiots-in-love-with-each-other-who -donā€™t-know-itā€™s-reciprocated! Theyā€™re back! Such imbeciles.
Wentworth is full sad puppy suffering. Elliot is scheming and dreaming. And this freaking bunny keeps popping up for no reason. Wtf.
Ninety Minutes to End
Mary! She has plans with that bottle of wine.
Run Anne run! Itā€™s resolution time!
That closing shot? Chefā€™s kiss.
Okay. So. This is where I mention that I have never read the book, so a direct comparison for plot and characterization purposes isnā€™t possible. I do like a good period romance film though.
Having seen the 2007 BBC version, Iā€™m a bit confused about the plot. Is it a romantic comedy or a drama? Is the protagonist supposed to be that witty? I dunno. I have now seen two very different versions of the same story.
Should you watch the Netflix adaptation? Ehhh. Itā€™s a period rom-com (?) that occasionally remembers it should be using dialogue similar to Austenā€™s. The dialogue and characterizations canā€™t decide which era to belong to - modern or regency. Reviewers and book-faithful folks are trashing it. If you need something easy to watch and donā€™t mind copious amounts of Dakota Johnson, then youā€™ll be fine here.
Iā€™m in no rush to see that again. We can talk about it again in 5 years or so. The question now is which pallet cleanser - North & South or old faithful Pride & Prejudice? šŸ¤”
