Falcon and Winter Soldier 1x04
Only two episodes left??? UNPOSSIBLE.
SAM. So much good Sam, with Sam showing us why he’s a real hero. He’s so compassionate while also taking no shit, and it’s such a good balance. I was a little worried the show had kind of forgotten he’s a counselor, but it was on excellent display here and I’m so glad. Sam kept trying to talk things through, and I was so glad to see him taking more of a lead in this episode.
That Bucky flashback!! MY HEART. But also lol Bucky WHY would you make the poor life choice of pissing off the Dora??? Ayo is right to be pissed! Your plan is a bad plan, Bucky!!! Also lol I see you there being all “we’re not partners >:( “ about Sam while also totally acting like partners.
I did find it delightful that Sam and Bucky just kind of stood around and watched the Dora wipe the floor with Walker for the most part lololol. Though I was annoyed that Zemo got to sneak off during that fight; that’s basically my biggest gripe with the episode, that all the plot/action stuff seemed to rely on people making dumbass mistakes like that, even the Dora Milaje. Like, I feel like all these characters should be more competent, and the only reason they’re not is that the plot demands that. But whatever.
Anyway, big YIKES to Walker. that last scene! on the one hand, congrats, welcome to being Captain America, losing your Bucky at least once is a requirement (hope Hoskins is okay?? maybe???? :( ), but also wow, when Karli is dealing with the serum better than you are, that’s, uh, a bad sign.
And VINDICATION. I have seen some Dumb Takes elsewhere that were all “oh, obviously Sam is gonna get the serum” and I was very Noble in not arguing with these takes, but it was still great to hear Sam say, without hesitation, that of course he wouldn’t take the serum. All the discussion of the serum in this episode was pretty interesting to me, because on the one hand, Zemo has a point! I’m glad he destroyed most of the serum! But also, obviously, he is taking it too far. I was so glad that Sam pointed out “what about Bucky” but I did wish we got to dig into that a little more, with Bucky himself maybe getting the chance to say something about how he didn’t CHOOSE this. It seems like Zemo has some sympathy for Bucky in that, and certainly Sam does, I just wish we got to dig into that a little more, especially since so much of the conflict in the series stems from the serum. Isaiah and Bucky are the two people who didn’t choose this, and I hope the show explores that a little more.
And the Sam/Bucky of it all!!! lol Bucky saying we’re not partners while also totally acting like partners and fully backing Sam up just like partner. Sam and Bucky are very much a “watch what they do not what they say” team up so far, in that their actions with each other say a lot more than their words, and their actions in this episode screamed partners. Bucky trusting Sam to talk to Karli and backing him up! Sam trusting Bucky to be his backup! Bucky and Sam talking about the Flag Smashers!
Also, another thing I noticed: Walker was, uh, obviously very violent in this episode! But in contrast, Sam and Bucky weren’t. Like, obviously, comic book violence, but it was notable to me to see that contrast, where Sam and Bucky are fighting more defensively and to catch the Flag Smashers, while Walker was not holding back. Like, Bucky with the knife he did not use! Sam using his wings defensively! Meanwhile Walker is doing...that. And getting blood on the shield.
Anyway, cannot believe there are only two episodes left, there still seems like a lot to wrap up!
