hiiiii i’m so so sorry but i haven’t been able to stop thinking about the thing you said about zukka miscommunication and how their miscommunication is more “we are both very aware that there are things wrong here and we are growing farther apart every time we try to ignore it but maybe we can hold out a little longer and pretend not to see it because it’s scarier to imagine what would happen if we didn’t find a way out of this” than anything and imagine if zuko’s last resort (instead of like. talking about it because he’s scared of what i said could happen) was propose to sokka because he does want to marry sokka but mostly he does it because he thinks maybe marriage can fix that rift between them. and then after he’s carved a betrothal necklace and proposes, sokka just can’t do it because he doesn’t think he’s ready for the consequences that would come with being out to the public AND he’s scared that this means zuko wants him to stay in the fire nation and sokka can love zuko but he can’t love the fire nation and he runs off

hes conning himself with that idea, “once we’re married we’ll be fine again, gotta ensure our future together, we can take traditions and bring them down once this happens” but of course it’s not that easy!! of course he rebelled against his nation before but things are different now. sure he’s older and more mature, but he’s the fire lord. he has a role to play, a role that can’t be seen as lesser by council and ancestors.

and maybe sokka doesn’t want marriage!!! maybe he was fine with how things were before, before the “we have to keep quiet about this, we have to put this problem under the rug and smooth it over, then we can be happy for realsies” he can’t have them both, zuko and the fire nation!!! they’re not separate enough, if he (they) can’t work this out to make it so, then he’ll do it quick for the both of them. sever both limbs.

he is packing his little bag and running away and zuko will spiral and sokka will too but here’s the thing!!! it’s freer like this!!! he doesn’t have the fire nation breathing down his neck, and no matter how guilty he feels about it, he can untense his shoulders and do things his own way. and zuko doesn’t have to worry about his safety atm, he can focus solely on his job as a ruler. maybe this is better, at least just a bit better than the “we don’t think or talk about this issue, then it’ll go away” era
