Do you think chemistry only happens naturally or do you believe you also can achieve if you work for it? Because there are ships I usually find very dry, but sometimes there will be a moment where they are able to make heart eyes or have some sexual tension, but they never seem able to carry it for long. Like, I can see the moment they are able to accomplish and give whatever the scene requires, but two seconds later I can see the vibe dying and them becoming very performed again. So I'll be +

So I'll be like, 'yeah, they have their moments, very few moments, but overall they lack chemistry". While there are pairings I think have chemistry in whatever they do, even scenes that are trivial and dispensable and others that don't have it even for a second no matter how hard the actors or writers try to make them happen. I don't know if this question made sense lol, anyway I love your blog and your analysis(:”
Thanks, anon. So I’ve answered this before in different iterations and many different times but I’ll just do it again and add this post to the chemistry masterlist. I’ve bolded that in the hopes that people will refer to it.
There is natural chemistry that scene partners just have, where it’s that magic, where it’s that feeling, where it’s that vibe, where it’s just something happens
[These are gifs/quotes already in the chemistry masterlist but I always use what actors say about chemistry to indicate that they too speak of it in ‘it’s just this crazy thing that can sometimes happen’ terms]
“Those are special people you find where you just explode with […] but you don’t get them very often where you just feel like as soon as they ‘action’ just everything comes alive and the world exists and your heart is right up in it.”
— Gina Rodriguez
“I think a lot of times, people think chemistry is, you’re in love with that person in real life and you want to date or marry or have sex […] but for me, chemistry is when you have to work the least to be the most authentic as your character. Like I remember there’s this place, there’s this place physically, where once I get into this spot, like so many inches away from John’s, like, shoulder, this part of his shoulder, I’m just Pam. Like it just, like, it just happens, like magic. Like that’s the magical thing about chemistry is that, like, now I’m Pam.”
— Jenna Fischer
Like Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson saw Paul and Nina interact as Stefan and Elena onscreen and they were just like, YES
Then there’s acting to portray certain emotions suitable for a scene, so a good example of how that works is actually in the show Barry
youtube
where it’s about listening and responding to your scene partner to create the atmosphere and mood and tone and so Lupita Nyong’o talked about this in terms of it’s easier for an actor to have the ‘this-crazy-thing-just-happens’ chemistry and then you can work on responding to your scene partner with this dynamite you already have in your arsenal

“Chemistry is something that you pray for as an actor because it is so hard to fabricate. It’s so much easier to just have it and then, you know, work on other things, on your intention and your action and all that. Trying to fabricate chemistry is just … it adds another … it’s a lot of energy.”
— Lupita Nyong’o
but sometimes when actors who are good actors or good enough actors don’t have the natural chemistry, they have the work ethic or the commitment to the scene where they’re listening and responding and just trying to make it work and can pull the moment off so for instance, during our drunk review of Shadowhunters, initiumseries and I realized that as the seasons went on, Katherine McNamara (Clary) had gotten better as an actress, like she wasn’t good but it was clear she had grown, we saw her intention in her gazes
Tumblr media
and then you had Dominic like
Tumblr media
that’s not the same energy, he’s always dead in the eyes
Tumblr media
Whereas a ship like Christina and Owen for instance, I like a lot of their scenes and I don’t think they have the natural BOOM! SPARK! It just WORKS chemistry
Tumblr media
like Leighton and Ed aren’t doing a scene nearly as intense as the one above but you see the difference
Tumblr media
but I believe that Sandra Oh and Kevin McKidd have the commitment to the scenes they’re in so you get compelling moments that with a natural chemistry base, with that energy and charge that flows between people, would take the scene to even higher heights but with their commitment and their acting, it’s still gut-wrenching
Tumblr media
So for your ask, it’s possible that there’s a fluke where in that moment, the two actors are listening and responding and having a really good day and they achieved something they couldn’t achieve on an everyday basis, Kat and Michael had one moment like that with Bonnie and Enzo and the tie

and then it evaporates.
