It was the ending of a work night - a couple of vampire sightings had been communicated to the rulers and Melissa had been out for most of the evening, locating those who had been supposedly witnesses to the episode to brainwash him to think differently. Daigo knew what his colleague was doing - previous rulers had not been aware of the extent of her powers and had imagined the woman to merely be good at bribing and negotiating other people’s silence through threats. As she returned, the queen looked tired - it was a normal thing when her powers took a toll on her, and Melissa took a seat in the room which was traditionally reserved for audiences. The king of the coven happened to be there - a hardworker in death as he had been in life, and maybe it was one of the reasons why they got along so well. It was so good to be able to trust her ruling partner instead of actively scheming for his demise. And perhaps, following human notions, they might have yet another bond to bring them together in addition to the well-being of their subjects in a vast city such as Tokyo. “I’ve been hearing interesting things from Mai-chan,” the woman said while pouring herself a glass of blood, making use of the reserves kept in that room for both of them. Never as good as taking blood from the source, of course, but Melissa was tired to hunt at the moment, “It seems that she’s growing rather attached to Kiriko-chan. She didn’t come home last night and then today I learned she slept over at your place.” Melissa was not mad - she was, in fact, grinning. A tongue darted out to collect a drop of blood that dripped from her lips, and she looked at the man with a very curious expression. “Daigo-kun, I think we may be on track to become in-laws.”

Daigo frowned at the expense report in front of him. He should be combing over it ( much in the same way he used to check the Clan’s ledgers ), but his thoughts continued to wander away from him. The king had changed environments twice now, moving from their private office to a nearby window and finally to this more open room, in the hopes that he could focus.
After a moment, Daigo flipped the page and blatantly looked away from it. His head was simply too full to follow the rows of numbers. The king sighed. As he decided that it would be better to re - address this task the next evening, Melissa walked in.
The younger of the ancients watched her intently, taking note of her lack of energy. It meant that the tip - off they received about some sloppy youths who behaved too publicly was genuine. Well, at least Melissa was uniquely armed to handle those situations. Daigo stood and stretched leisurely while the queen fetched a glass of blood. He yawned, fangs gleaming in the minimalistic light their scarlet eyes found comfortable.
Melissa’s comment made the king chuckle. Daigo rolled his shoulders, fixed his vest, and straightened his sleeves. “If I didn’t know better, I would say you were reading my mind,” he quipped. The remark was teasing but multi - layered. To anyone merely walking in, it sounded like a bit of harmless fun ; between the two of them, it was a reference to how their powers played with one another. “I was just thinking about it. Kiri - chan’s dad and I discussed the girls before I came in tonight.”
Daigo smiled to himself. “It would seem that way, wouldn’t it? Kiriko and Mai are rather serious about one another ; truthfully, it wouldn’t surprise me if they mated already without realizing it. Once the bond forms, of course, they’ll know.” He leaned against his previous seat and folded his arms, unable to help how the curve of his lips widened. That their daughters were obviously on track to be together for the rest of eternity still hadn’t fully sank in for the king yet, and his face was a mix of amusement and disbelief. At minimum, it was  .    .    .  quite the remarkable coincidence.
“At least we both will have in - laws that we get along with,” Daigo offered, parroting a humorous and optimistic point that his mate brought up in their conversation earlier.
