I truly do not understand why. divorced from gender and from aesthetics. anyone wears trousers.

like listen. Many people say to me "Ruth you are so femme you are so girly you love to wear skirts whereas I, because I am a Practical Person Who Cares Not How I Look, love to wear trousers and shorts"

and yes I have my femme moments indeed. I am periodically quite femme, very aesthetically led, yes I am vain and guided by the whims of style, yes, thank you for noticing. but also. a good skirt (and bike shorts/leggings/stockings as needed) is literally superior in every respect to trousers or leggings

doesn't dig in when you sit down. doesn't change shape at the waist. easy to fit. sits where your waist is not where somebody arbitrarily decided your waist should be (halfway down your hips)

in a skirt and leggings you have 100% the range of motion you would have naked. high kick all you want. scramble over a fence no bother. in jeans it is often a struggle to get my foot up far enough to tie my shoes and I'm not even wearing skinnies.

crotch freedom. unexpected period? you have bought yourself time before it shows. have a dick? not obviously! prone to irritation? YOU ARE FREE.

pockets. if trousers sit tight on your hips (and most of them do) everything falls out of your pockets immediately when you move your legs. you have to take them down to sit on the loo and again everything falls out. put on a nice loose skirt with big inseam pockets. everything you put in your pockets is staying there. the only limit on depth of pocket is length of skirt.

also if you buy a skirt and it DOESN'T have pockets it is almost universally WAY easier to add sturdy in-seam pockets to skirts than trousers

almost unlimited options vis a vis fabric, cut and weight. you can make skirts out of anything

piss easy to make. some skirts are literally just a sheet of fabric. some are two rectangles and a waistband.

oh but what if people see my knickers? THEY WON'T FOOL THIS IS WHY YOU ARE WEARING LEGGINGS AND/OR BIKE SHORTS. that and because of thigh rub. and for warmth.

all the advantages of leggings but you have pockets and a stylish silhouette. and your butt is covered if that is of concern to you.

I cannot overstate how much more comfortable and freemoving a good skirt is than a similarly decent pair of trousers. oh trousers are more practical for Masculine Practicalities than skirts are they? COME OVER HERE AND SAY IT TO THE SCOTS. INDIANS. MAYA. GREEKS. GHANAIANS. JAVANESE.

also. and I feel like this should go without saying. if you don't have a dick and you need to piss outside a skirt is 1000% easier than anything with legs. also oh I wanna change to go in the sea? PSYCH I LITERALLY CHANGED UNDER MY SKIRT WHILE WE WERE TALKING.

lecture concluded don't EVER call me frivolous or impractical for wearing skirts. I'm frivolous and impractical for many other reasons but if you want practical clothing I swear you'll be so much happier in a kilt and leggings than jeans.
