The file name for this comic is 'Lister is a dick' lol, but he's not really, he's reflecting behaviour in some of the people in my social group, who when push comes to shove, are incredible people!...just a tad...tact deficient. This took a while to do! Motivation was very low, but thankfully my spouse is super encouraging and got me to show work to other comic/storyboard artist friends! Also, I loved making those stupid hearts! So why a Broomistega? I liked the idea of her cuddling with a little cute amphibian friend for comfort, like ( but probably not) in the fossil. And yes, the zippy mouth and eyes with whites was a jab at my own work, cos I still get quite self conscious about the dolls creepy-factor. Anyway, thank you all for your time, patience, and support! Photo Romans and La Jetée

Marie-Françoise Plissart, Jacques Derrida -Droit de regards, 1985 Photo Romans, photo novels or fumetti’s are basically the same thing which is a way of storytelling via photographs. This medium uses photos, text, conversation or sometimes (if they are in a book form) they include word balloons such as in the photo comics. 

Photo Romans become popular in the ’50s. Although this new way of storytelling occurred in Italy, it spread throughout the world. Even in Turkey, photo Romans were given with newspapers and they become quite popular in the southern regions of Turkey. 

We can observe the impact of photo Romans in Yılmaz Erdoğan’s movie called Ekşi Elmalar (Sour Apples) because in the movie there are three sisters they live in Hakkari in the ’60s and they don’t know to read however they all made up the lines by looking at the images and daydream about it at nights.

Another example of this medium is La Jetée. La Jetée is a 1962 movie directed by Chris Marker. This featurette film tells its story which is about an experiment for time-traveling using just photos. Although the film is just made with photos, it still creates movement and grabs the audience’s attention via different camera angles. The movie is actually a good example of this type of storytelling because by using different shots one can definitely understand the focal point and what is the story about. For example, when we see the experimenter in a worm shot, I felt the power of him over me. In addition to that, the sound has an important effect in this movie especially when they time travel music was really effective for me to understand the time changes. 

As a result, photo Romans, especially in the ’50s and ’60s, were quite popular. This different way of storytelling using photographs affected many films such as 12 Monkeys and some photo comics adapted into films and TV shows such as Grease, Charlie’s Angels, Doctor Who and etc. In addition to these there were also books turned into photo Romans such as Ahmed Hamdi Tanpınar’s book called Huzur was also adapted into a photo Roman in the ‘60’s. 

The photo Romans also affected other artists around the world and some photographers use this technique and created stories with 3 or more photographs. I really enjoy reading photo Romans and I found a chance to watch one recently. I like them because they tell a story to me but they give me space for me to create.
