I'm the anon who asked for ur take on Daniel's "victim-blaming". It really is an accusation I've seen ppl make! As I said, I disagree w/ it, so it's hard for me to argue the point for them. An example they gave was that Daniel sounded 'judgy' when he pressed Louis about taking Lestat back in ep6. I've also seen more general critiques along the lines of "Louis isn't lying he's just traumatized so Daniel should be more tactful" but IMO u can't expect that much tact from a guy u nearly killed once.
Yeah, well, I would have probably sounded "judgy" as well, if the guy I hear attacking me on a tape (hey, finally an explanation for the scar!!) would invite me to gush over his long lost love (who he doesn't call that), and I'd listened to the tapes of a very different interview, where Louis obviously went more the book IWTV route of continuously insulting Lestat.
Like... Daniel listens to all that shit on the tape, some things click back into place, right? But not all.
Now, as his books and career suggest/prove - he is good. Real good. Pulitzer price good.
Even before he is in Dubai and even before they exchange one word he knows there's more to the story. Because things don't add up in his life. (All props to the set designers, the book with "Savage Garden" behind him or the puzzle he's doing at the beginning). There's things he has forgotten.
Now he might've pushed that at the drugs, but now... with the tapes... there's proof?! But for what?
So yes, Daniel comes to Dubai with an attitude. Of course.
And then Louis starts to... spin this tale. And Daniel calls him out on it. I have to say I gleefully cheer(ed) him on.
Because Louis is - intended or not, influenced or not - talking out his ass. Now mind you, I love this Louis. This updated version.
But if you can say anything about him then that he is not being an honest interview partner here :)), no matter the reason.
And it is needed that Daniel calls him out, that he focuses on the abuse, that he spells it out. Because as the discussions on here have shown, some things do fly over people's head.
Daniel is there to not only tear the narrative apart within the show, but to spell it out for the audience.
And, luckily for us - he does.
There are only victims in the Vampire Chronicles. TRAUMA.
It sometimes helps to keep that in mind, too. Daniel is a victim, too. So is Louis. So is Armand. So is Lestat. Etc.
Everyone we meet... everyone... will have a shit story to tell. (Well, maybe except Jesse?^^)
Daniel is very much part of the "vampire" story... I hope he digs even deeper before it starts to unravel.
