Dude for real, your takes on ninjago are absolutely refreshing to see and I agree with all of it. I’m so sick of seeing the fans on twitter praise the show as well as it’s writers no matter what when there are just so many issues with it as a whole.
To a point I get it, when you really like something it’s sometimes easy to just stack up all the small things you enjoy and not notice as much of the errors and such. Me being a writer, it’s often very hard not to notice these things, especially the more time I spend with something.
It’s sad that to a point I know, all LEGO shows at their core are constructed to sell products, not make a good story, but I still don’t really consider that much of an excuse. I’ve seen a lot of good things come out of LEGO shows, and I haven’t even seen all of them yet.
I think the issue comes down to the fact that Ninjago has gone on for a long time, probably too long. Ultimately it would have been best to make s10 the finale and not written that as poorly as they did, but Ninjago makes too much money to quit it. So they keep making content with writers who, frankly, just don’t care enough. Whether it’s because they consider it just another paycheck or they’ve been there for so gd long it’s exhausting.
(Additionally I say fuck you to the writers for things like this. I get that you don’t want to constantly answer questions but your audience is primarily kids and young teens who look up to you, maybe don’t be a massive dick.)
The writers constantly ignore anyone pointing out plotholes and such or dismissing it with either “it’s a kids show don’t take it seriously” or “ACTUALLY” or some other nonsense. Tommy also even admitted on an interview when it comes to writing they all write shit separately and then try to smash it all together the best they can in a meeting which explains a LOT. For anyone who has not done collaborative writing before, this is a VERY bad method.
I think what gets me, personally, is the high praise people give a lot of emotional scenes in later seasons because ? The build up is terrible, to be frank. Jay’s speech at the end of s12 had zero impact because we never see how he feels toward his birth parents at all (outside of briefly in s6 (in which he seems to not even give a shit about them like oh my birth dad was rich and famous that’s cool but he’s not my REAL dad so idgaf)). I didn’t even make it through s13 yet but I’m willing to gamble the scenes with Cole and his mom won’t do much for me either because WE NEVER FUCKING SEE COLE TRYING TO COPE WITH THE FACT HE LOST HIS MOM (outside of that ONE flashback in season freaking eight)
And this is coming from me, who has pretty high empathy from visual or sound cues.
It’s sloppy. It’s inconsistent. It just gets sloppier. Any high emotional scenes they’ve had since s9 have had zero impact. The general plots either feel rushed or like they come out of nowhere. They keep adding new shit without even TRYING to make it line up to the lore they already made.
Anyway I could go on but I won’t. If you’re reading this and you still enjoy the show, that’s fine. I hope you continue to enjoy what’s being released, but I do at least ask you stop giving the writers so much blind praise.
They REALLY don’t deserve it.
