The Spectral Railroad
Monday, October 31, 7-8 p.m., Minneapolis Central Library, Doty Board Room
Many people know that most of our popular recreational trails were once railroad lines, but few of us are aware of the many abandoned right-of-ways scattered across the state.
Two lines in particular, built by James J. Hill in the late 19th century, ran through the center of Hennepin County, from Hopkins to Lake Minnetonka. Later, these railways became popular streetcar lines that carried residents to and from destinations such as the Excelsior Amusement Park or the sanatorium in Glen Lake. Though abandoned now for 85 years and overrun or reworked by relentless development and population growth, many traces of these long forgotten rail and streetcar lines are still visible in unlikely and surprising places.
Archivist Ted Hathaway will lead you on this hunt for “ghosts” in the heart of the suburban landscape.
