there’s just. a lot. to say about the fandom mom dynamic combined with the prospect of a fandom that involves a Lot of historical content (two fandoms i’ve been in have had some of these dynamics) and a) people with specific expertise considering themselves Universal b) a lot of the key idea that history... is... discoursive and rarely a definitive set of facts getting lost and C) people who did an intro course or read a book or such trying to Explain it and make it Fun or Simple for intro students, which of course feeds back into A quite strongly.
which is all a problem because it reinforces some of random’s less fun general power structures, and ALSO because that expertise associated with a) leans very heavily towards western european + christian history, and then the anglo united states, and that.... misses out on much of the world, and can lead to... uneveness in the accuracy by which fandom talks about different periods
like. i’m an undergrad so take this how you want and history as a discipline DEFINITELY has glass tower problems, BUT i also think that the reality is a lot of that more complex vocabulary and style? IS IMPORTANT. IT’S IMPORTANT FOR NUANCE AND THE DESCRIPTION OF COMPLEX PATTERNS. And the OTHER reality is that history is not in fact removed, and dabbling with it and sharing it online not as casual a hobby as say, knitting, because you are often dealing with lived realities and histories of violence, trauma, and oppresion that affect people’s lives and communities to this day. a) just because it is not Your History doesn’t mean it’s not still VERY present and whatever it is, it is privledge to be removed but also b) it means that applying simplistic goofy lines or moralisms to it can be.... something, especially when many educational systems are limited in terms of historical content- it’s often many tumblr userss first time with the content, esp if outside EUrope or the US
so anyway, i love history, i love fandoms that talk about history, but i also really want to say- be prudent with history and think about the wider implications
