Interviewer: A difficult race, but you performed well.
Charles: Yes the race was very hard due to the rain, however ART GP and the good chassis helped me a lot. I hope to win the next race too.
Interviewer: Your strongest adversary Max Verstappen made a mistake…not you. You proved to be calm, determined, relaxed/comfortable… but how would it have gone with Max in the race on track?
Charles: Honestly, I don’t know what would have happened/how it would have gone but [smirk] we did it without him. He made a mistake. Maybe next time.

charles gets third at the cik-fia kz european championship in genk. max wins.
its been a year since the "inchident" and tensions are still high on track... just two races earlier, max is forced to retire after pushing charles into the grass so hard that it causes his already struggling gearbox to fail. charles' team, artgp, decries the maneuver on track as "unfair" via a press release titled "ART Grand Prix stronger than adversities". (meanwhile, charles' fansite decides uses slightly more flavorful language in its own race summary... describing the move as "incomprehensible," simply scandalous" and "shameful" while appealing for officials to do a better job of penalizing dangerous moves. max's site ignores the race entirely, leaving no summary to memorialize his team's take on what happened in sarno. it makes sense: its a lone bad race for the dutch driver in an otherwise dominant season.)
ironically, the cik-fia would start the next race weekend the two attended in wackersdorf with a conversation to all competitors about sportsmanlike behavior.
things may not be as dire as they originally seem, however. charles and max might be ignoring each other on the podium, but they're still friends on facebook: max apparently leaves a comment-- deleted as part of his early f1 social media account purge-- on charles' post about the race.

VIDEO: "Charles Leclerc: pilote Monégasque de Karting" (MonacoInfo, 2008)
Interviewer: And when you see your mom or dad driving around town like that, do you give them driving tips? What do you tell them?
Charles: Yes. I told them to obey all red lights.
Interviewer: Is there any advice you could give to people who are listening to us, who are watching us and who don't necessarily always drive very well?
Charles: Well, on the road, you respect the code and on the track, well, you drive.

source: f1tv originals series: 2019, f1 "That was a 24 hour race and I was in the team with Jules, my brother and Norman Nato-- I don't know if, you know, also-- and it was around three in the morning or something like that, and they say 'Charles, take the karts and you do this session of one hour. You know, we, we will go and, and have a party and then we'll come back in one hour.' And I remember I took the, I started driving at three and at eight in the morning, they were still not coming by because they were just passing somewhere here and I didn't want to stop because I didn't want to lose the first position. So I have been driving for five straight hours and I was completely dead, but they eventually came back after five hours to save me from dying inside the car, which was nice."
(And compare with Lorenzo's version:
"There is an anecdote which sums up Charles well and his winning state of mind," smiles Lorenzo. When we were teenagers, we often did 24-hour relay endurance races with Jules Bianchi and Norman Nato (Editor's note: driver in the World Endurance Championship). Sometimes we took Charles, who was 7 or 8 years old, to do hour-long stints with us. One day, we leave him the kart around 1:30 am, and we go have fun in a nightclub. We come back around 4 a.m. We thought he would have left the kart or given someone over when we returned. But he was still on the track, he had been driving non-stop for three and a half hours. He took out the blisters on his hands and his arms in a compote. It shows how far he can go …")

Charles spends a week at Formula Medicine.
Formula Medicine is a motorsports program that focuses on mental, medical and athletic preparation. In 2018, Charles would credit part of his success to the organization, saying ,"I started working on mental aspects in 2010, with Formula Medicine: my head was my weak point and thanks to this support I learned how to manage emotions during the race weekend. Even today I do some sessions with the mental coach, to see where we are."

It just came, like one day we decided to call each other calamar, which is not really [chuckles] such a beautiful nickname but, yeah, it was just for fun. We were kids and we were laughing. And actually, we have many other nicknames because we were teammates also in karting and we spent a lot, a lot of time together. So, a lot of nicknames came alongside all this time. And this kind of stayed with us."

source: nba karting on youtube season: karting, 2012 - Moderator: Okay, so, we go to Max Verstappen to start at this press conference for the European KF2 Championship. Max Verstappen, I would like to say finally you have a win in the CIK-FIA race. Uh, you must be happy. Max: Um, yeah, I'm really happy right now because, uh, I've never won a race before in the CIK, so that was a little bit disappointing. Um, we tried, uh, to do our best this weekend. I think in the practice we show already the potential we were fast, or even in time qualifying, we qualified third. Um, it was quite tricky this weekend with the rain, then it dries up again. Um, yeah, final one, uh, I was leading and made, made a mistake so I finished second. Um, and then the dry Final too was, I think, was just perfect. Everything was good. The chassis, the engine was really happy. Moderator: Max, we saw you also in Suzuka for KF1 World Championship. Uh, you were also amongst the first but here in comparison with your uh, opponents in the World Championship, you are really, you were really fast. So, can you explain that? Max: Uh, in Suzuka we had some problems with the fuel, so that's why we had also some problems with the engine and I make pole position on Sunday, so that was a positive thing, but after it was difficult for us. Moderator: There is nothing that can explain that it was such different? [...] Bridgestone tire, perhaps or no? Max: With the chassis, we still need to work a little bit on the Bridgestone tires cause it was the first time for me, also on the Bridgestones. Um, think even if we had a fuel problem, I think we were quite fast. So, uh, we will see. Moderator: Thank you. Thank you very much Max. Uh, we go to Charles Leclerc, in English, Charles? No problem. We can do it in English. I think. Uh, Charles, a win quite unexpected in the first race, or at the moment I think you didn't expect you could win. Uh, Max did a mistake and then what happened in the second? It was more difficult? Charles: First race. Uh, under the rain we were very fast, but at the same speed of Max and uh, Max did an error, and so I go past first and then I stay, uh, at the first position because we were at the same speed and at the last, uh, he was a bit faster at the last lap. And for the second race, uh, in the five, the five six first slot, we had a bit of problems with the chassis. It was sliding a lot and so I've lost lots of position and then I had to catch up everything and I've done seven at the end, which is not too bad because we are second at the Championship, and still to race more. Moderator: Charles, in this European Championship, there are four races and three results are taken. It mean that before going to PF [International Circuit], you are almost the same as Max. I mean, one win for each. So in PF it'll be very, very interesting, isn't it? Charles: Yeah, it'll be, the championship will be, will be winning PF in any way. It's four races. It's a long championship and, and hopefully we will do good in PF too.

ARTICLE: "Charles Leclerc, a concentration of talent from Monaco" (fia.com, 2014)
At 16, the Monegasque Charles Leclerc has just completed his final season of karting with the significant result of KZ World Vice-Champion its first year in 125cc gearbox.

At 16, the Monegasque Charles Leclerc has just completed his final season of karting with the significant result of KZ World Vice-Champion its first year in 125cc gearbox. Winner of the Academy Trophy in 2011 and World Vice-Champion U18 in 2012, his rise has been meteoric for a driver who does not spend much time training on the track.
"Naturally I started in France in Minikart then Minime and Cadet before making my debut in KF3. The 2011 year marked a turning point in my career. I focused on an international programme including the CIK-FIA Academy Trophy. This competition takes place with identical karts and gave me a lot, especially as I finished first! But I also gained confidence. I also won the KF3 World Cup at Sarno, one of my best memories.
"The following year, I moved up to KF2, with the title of European Vice-Champion and a 5th place at the World Cup. But I wanted to participate in the U18 World Championship in parallel as a sequel to the Academy Trophy, because it is very useful to fight on equal terms. 2nd place at this level is a good result. I knew I would soon move to cars, but I took advantage of the opportunity to pursue karting for one more season. 125cc gearbox is a good learning experience before going to cars and I was able to compete with the biggest names in karting like Davide Fore and Marco Ardigo who made me dream when I was younger. I even took 2nd place at Varennes in the KZ World Championship behind Max Verstappen, a great satisfaction for a rookie like me!
"Numerous clashes with Max Verstappen track gave me additional experience that I am enjoying now. He is a formidable rival and competing with him builds character! I am currently preparing for Formula Renault 2.0 in 2014. Of course, the experience of competing in karts is irreplaceable, even if though the car world is very different. Karting has the advantage of driving a lot, you learn to manage stress and stay calm in the paddock, to put pressure on your opponents, and when you're in a well-structured team like ART GP, working constantly on data acquisition, which is very important in cars.
"To succeed in karting, you must have good associates. The family of course has a major role, as do the teams. All of the teams which I found myself in since Minikart helped me progress and I thank them because it is thanks to them that I can continue my career. Then being identified and supported by All Road Management and Nicolas Todt remains a fundamental point. I guess all the drivers who leave karting have a touch of nostalgia, but the lure of the new challenges we face is the strongest motivation."

"It was my first race in town. The track was great around the palm trees, the beach was behind the stands. Nice to go swimming between 2 races. I finished 3rd in practice behind my friends: Estéban and Charles. Charles is from Monaco, he already knew the circuit from the previous year. I start second in the Prefinal, and at the second turn, my rear wheel gets stuck in the wall and PAFF!!! Accident. The 14 karts arriving behind me hooked me. I had a little pain and my kart even more than me. The shaft was bent in 3 places, my steering column dead and my tie rods too. My father had to do a lot of mechanical work for me to make the final, starting last. I came back to 7th, doing my best, I was a little disappointed. For fun, we did a lap of honor with my friends, applauded by the crowd."
