Manhattan Theatre Club
Announces Full Casting for the
New York Premiere of
Poor Yella Rednecks
By Qui Nguyen
Directed by May Adrales
Previews begin Tuesday, October 10, 2023
Opening on Wednesday, November 1, 2023
At MTC at New York City Center – Stage I
Lynne Meadow (Artistic Director) and Chris Jennings (Executive Director) are pleased to announce the full cast for the New York Premiere of Poor Yella Rednecks, written by Qui Nguyen (Vietgone) and directed by May Adrales (Vietgone, Golden Shield). Poor Yella Rednecks will begin previews on Tuesday, October 10 and open on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at New York City Center – Stage I (131 West 55th Street).
The cast of Poor Yella Rednecks will feature Jon Hoche (Vietgone, Life of Pi), Ben Levin (Vietgone, “Kung Fu”), Samantha Quan (Vietgone), Jon Norman Schneider (The Coast Starlight), Maureen Sebastian (The Best We Could: A Family Tragedy), and Paco Tolson (Vietgone).
The creative team for Poor Yella Rednecks includes Tim Mackabee (Scenic Design), Valérie Thérèse Bart (Costume Design), Lap Chi Chu (Lighting Design), Shane Rettig (Original Music & Sound Design), Jared Mezzocchi (Projection Design), David Valentine (Puppet Design), Kenny Seymour (Arrangements), and Alyssa K. Howard (Production Stage Manager).
Qui Nguyen, the wildly inventive playwright (and screenwriter for Marvel and Disney) known for his use of pop culture, pop music and puppetry, reunites with his frequent director, May Adrales, for this funny, sexy and brash new play. A young Vietnamese family attempts to put down roots in Arkansas, a place as different from home as it gets. A mom and dad balance big hopes and low-wage jobs, as old flings threaten to pull them apart. It all makes for a bumpy road to the American dream. From the world of Nguyen’s Vietgone, with its comic book and action movie influences, comes a play that melds a deeply personal story with the playwright’s trademark, killer humor. The New York Times hails the writer’s work as “culturally savvy comedy,” and this production shows you why.
Poor Yella Rednecks is co-commissioned by South Coast Repertory and Manhattan Theatre Club. Support for MTC’s production of Poor Yella Rednecks is provided by the Howard Gilman Foundation and Laurents/Hatcher Foundation. Developed in part in Center Theatre Group’s Writers’ Workshop.
The 2022-23 season marked Lynne Meadow’s 50th Anniversary as Artistic Director of MANHATTAN THEATRE CLUB. Meadow was recently joined at the helm of MTC by Executive Director Chris Jennings, who succeeded Executive Producer Barry Grove. MTC’s mission, which Meadow created in 1972 and has implemented since, is to develop and present new work in a dynamic, supportive environment; to identify and collaborate with the most exciting new as well as accomplished artists; and to produce a diverse repertoire of innovative, entertaining, and thought-provoking plays and musicals by American and international playwrights. Since 1989, MTC Education, which uses the power of live theatre and playwriting to awaken minds, ignite imaginations, open hearts, and change lives, has also been an important part of our work.
Over five decades, MTC has grown from a small off-off-Broadway showcase into one of the country’s most prestigious and award-winning theatre companies, creating approximately 600 world, American, New York and Broadway premieres. Our productions have earned 7 Pulitzer Prizes, 28 Tony Awards, 50 Drama Desk Awards and 49 Obie Awards amongst many other honors. Our Broadway home is the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre (261 West 47th Street) and Off-Broadway at New York City Center (131 West 55th Street). (shane) “Is anything too sweet for Murasakibara?” I joked, watching him eat. A few minutes has passed, and I glanced at my wristwatch to see it was already eight in the evening. “Oh! It’s getting late; we should head home.” I stood up only to feel my legs wobble, causing me to sit back down again. My eyelids started to fall, but I tried to fight the drowsiness I was feeling, standing up again whilst tightly gripping onto the chair for support. “It’s so early but— I feel like sleeping so soon...”
“Probably not.” Kise says in response to your question about the other GOM member. But when it’s time to go hom and you wobble, he shoots up from his seat and tries to assist you. He looks worried for you. “You look like you’re about to pass out. Here, let me take you home.” He holds out his arm so you can hold onto it for support.

While almost all FBA sellers like us are in the thick of our preparation for selling on Q4, most recently, there have been a lot of interesting developments regarding Amazon’s sales tax fight as states in the US have vowed to take stricter measures to close down all loopholes that let Amazon customers purchase products online without having to pay sales tax. The ramifications of this will affect our businesses in the short and long term, so it is important that we stay informed and updated regarding this issue.
What exactly is going on right now? Currently, products purchased directly from Amazon are subject to sales tax. However, for products sold by 3rd party merchants like those selling under the FBA program, Amazon maintains that it is the responsibility of the merchant to collect sales taxes from their buyers on the items the customers purchase. As a result, not all purchases on Amazon are being subjected to sales tax. This has led to state governments using various legal methods to collect tax liabilities incurred from Amazon third-party sales.
Why should I be concerned? As mentioned in the beginning of the post, the loophole which allows customers to purchase without paying sales tax is about to be closed. The effects of this will be possibly felt by both Amazon customers and FBA sellers as early as this holiday season as customers will most probably pay sales tax on more of their product purchases. For us FBA sellers, this means that a rethinking of our pricing strategy is definitely in order for us to profit off of this lucrative selling season. However, this matter carries long term effects that affect the sustainability of our businesses.
Right now, many FBA sellers are anxious about how all of this develops. Many are worried about the additional burden of collecting sales taxes as they will have to deal with the trouble of filing monthly taxes in various states and taxing districts along with the different tax policies and rates these places enforce. Moreover, there is also the alarming possibility of these states collecting directly from the sellers, as Amazon has the resources to fight off their claims.
There are a lot of speculations, but at this point, the best thing that we can do is to stay informed and be ready.
What is the 2017 MTC Sales Tax Amnesty Program? 25 US states through the Multi-State Tax Commission have offered an amnesty program that will help Amazon sellers address their sales tax liability. In order to avoid paying backdated sales taxes, FBA sellers will have to get a sales tax permit in each of the 25 participating states. The deadline of the registration will be on November 1, 2017.

In a 2-hour podcast, Jennifer Dunn of TaxJar and Mike Fleming of Peisner Johnson discuss everything FBA sellers need to know about MTC sales tax amnesty. They answer questions most FBA sellers have regarding the details of the amnesty program, the various concerns of the FBA seller and the participant and non-participant states. Most importantly, they discuss steps you can take to move forward and options you have for filing tax returns.
Should I participate in the amnesty program or not? What do the experts think? The MTC Sales Tax Amnesty program can be best described as a polarizing proposition, and has generated various opposing opinions from prominent FBA experts. We at FBA Library believe it is best to hear the various takes of the most prominent figures in the industry so that we can form our own educated opinion:
Think Twice
In this video from Jungle Scout, Shane Stinimetz gets the opinions Chris McCabe of EcommerceChris and Sales Tax attorney Paul Rafelson who believe you should think twice before participating in the amnesty program. They explain why they believe this move by the MTC is wrong as it is devoid of any legal basis to sales tax.
Take Advantage of the Amnesty Program
Amazon FBA Sellers Can Take Advantage of a New Sales Tax Amnesty
http://ift.tt/2gI5ajl In this Seller Lab blog post by Lena Liberman, she talks about how FBA sellers can take advantage of this seemingly once-in-a-lifetime deal being offered by the MTC to properly address the issue of sales tax remittance to the state. She emphasizes that despite the procedural hassles, the amnesty program is the best way to move forward in the FBA industry.
Yay or Nay
In this video from Seller Labs, Jeff Cohen hosts a panel of experts who give their opinions on whether you should participate in the MTC Sales Tax Amnesty program. On the “Yay” side is Michael Fleming, director of CPA firm Peisner Johnson and Company. On the “Nay” side are Chris McCabe of EcommerceChris and attorneys Paul Rafelson and Jordan Goodman.
The Great Debate
In this debate mediated by Jungle Scout’s Shane Stinimetz, sales tax attorney Paul Rafelson (negative) and Catching Clouds Ecommerce Accounting services co-founder Scott Scharf (affirmative) go back and forth on the benefits and consequences of participating in the MTC Sales Tax amnesty program.
We hope that the resources we provided have helped you understand what the MTC Sales Tax Amnesty Program is and whether it would be beneficial for you to participate. Keep in mind that the deadline for sending in an application will be on November 1, 2017, and we hope that we have been able to contribute in the course of action you have decided to take.

(shane) I stood up and dusted my clothes off. “What he doesn’t know won’t hurt him~” I replied. I then made my way out of the gym with Kise following along. Despite my horrible luck with geminis today, I still walked home with him. Hopefully, nothing terrible happens to me again... “Nii-san is coming to visit tomorrow since it’s the weekend,” I mentioned. “And Takao’s probably gonna tag along with him.” A light blush spread throughout my cheeks, remembering my secret little crush on Takao.
Kise walks alongside you and listens. He chuckles and looks ahead, not mentioning anything about the blush on your cheeks but he takes a mental note of it. “I guess he’s still a little soft on his sister and worried for you too! You wouldn’t tell him about all the horrible things that happened because of me, right? He’ll crucify me if he finds out!”

(shane) I shook my head. “No, actually; right now I feel perfectly fine,” I cocked my head to the side and scratched my temple in confusion. “What if the ice cream actually had a certain substance that made me feel all drowsy?” I questioned in a joking manner, even though on the inside, I was partially serious.
"Like an allergy?" He asks, hoping you'd take that excuse. Normally, people who get suddenly drowsy on his missions won't suspect the food or drink they took, and they just assume they're too tired but realized it late. Unless they're working for an organization like he did. Could you be an agent too? So he laughs and plays his suspicions off. "Or like something people do in spy movies? Are you sure you weren't just too tired moving all those boxes into your apartment all by yourself?"

(shane) Coming back to my senses, I gently rubbed my eyes before opening them slightly. I saw a glass of water being handed beside me, so I took it and chugged it down. However, my half-lidded eyes immediately became wide open, as I realized where we were in. I shot up and bowed to him, my upper body going as low as a forty-five-degree angle. “I‘m so sorry you had to— Um— I— caused trouble for you— T-This is embarrassing,” I babbled, lifting my upper body back up. “Thank you, though...”
Kise laughs at your antics and gestures for you to calm down. “Relax, it’s fine! I couldn’t leave you out at the shop alone since Midorimacchi would’ve been worried sick about you. And he’d probably kill me since we were out together.” Then he looks a little more serious. “But are you okay now? Do you feel tired?”

(shane) I scooped a medium chunk of the ice cream into my mouth. After a second, I pursed my lips and squeezed my eyes shut, indicating that the ice cream was awfully sweet. “It’s s-sweet!” I managed to sputter from trying the handle the sweetness. I shot up and quickly got myself a glass of water, taking little sips from it before going back to our table.
He watches you and laughs at your reaction. While you’re distracted, he exchanges a glance at the shop worker and they nod at him. If everything goes well, you’re going to get drowsy after a few minutes and then he’ll definitely have an excuse to go inside your apartment. When you can see him, he tries a small spoon of the ice cream and winces a little. “It’s more something that Murasakibaracchi would eat.”

(shane) I paused and looked up at him blankly, then at the ice cream, then at him again. Remembering my past experience here, I decided not to accept it. I felt like I had to be extra cautious. I softly smiled at him. “No thank you, I’m on a diet,” I answered confidently, then proceeded to continue reading. “Thank you for the offer though,” I said, not bothering to look up at him anymore.
“Suit yourself, cutie. No need to change yourself too much because you already look good.” He winks at you before taking the ice cream away and eating it himself. He tells Kise about how cautious you were being when he gets back to the counter. Kise frowns at the text before he decides to send you one instead.

(shane) I jumped when I saw Kise standing in front of me. I starting backing up a little and waved my hands in front of my face. “N-No, it’s not that—“ I suddenly felt someone’s body slam into my back, causing me to stumble forward and fall flat on my face.
“Whoa! You okay there?” He quickly kneels down beside you and helps you up. Whoever bumped into you is already gone when you’re both standing up again. “Man, you’ve had too many accidents today. Are you sure you’re going to be okay at this rate?“
Then he notices your nose start bleeding.
“Oh crap, your nose is bleeding! Hold on!“ He searches his bag for a pack of tissues and holds it out to you. “Here! Hurry!”

(shane) (oh myy for so long i actually thought i sent this in) “I-I don’t...” I said bashfully, not really knowing how to answer him. I followed him to the bench and remembered about Kise suddenly disappearing during the attraction. “Oh, right! I lost him during the attraction!” I panicked, placing both hands on the sides of my head. “Oh no... What if something bad had happened to him?”
Midorima scoffs. “Highly unlikely. He’s probably taken a lot of other girls into that attraction and employed the same tactics he’s using on you.“
Then your brother gestures to the exit of the Haunted House exhibit where Kise is walking out leisurely before looking around. Once he spots the both of you, he’s taken by surprise and quickly jogs up to the bench you’re both at.
“Midorimacchi? I didn’t know you were here!“ Then Kise looks at you. “You suddenly disappeared on me! Where did you go? I was worried!“

(shane) My heart leapt. I screamed and, without thinking twice, dashed forward with full speed. A hint of light finally poked through the darkness and entered my view. Still running, I slammed myself against someone’s back and fell on my back. I looked up to see who it was, my hand hovering over my eyes to cover them from the blinding light. “N-Nii-san? You came from this ride too?”
Kise laughs at your reaction, watching as you dash away from him.
Midorima  grunts when you run into his back and he turns around, ready to yell at whoever ran into him. When he sees you sprawled out on the ground, he quickly grabs your hand and helps you up. “I saw you and Kise go into the ride. Why did you agree to going on this ride when you’re this scared?"
He leads you away from the exit of the attraction and towards a nearby bench. “So where is the blond idiot?”

(shane) Nervous, I began to aimlessly walk straight, clueless as to where exactly I was heading towards. As I felt hands try to grab me and quick footsteps growing louder and louder from every direction, my heart started pounding, and I greatly increased my pace. I couldn’t run, since the lights were nearly blinding me. “K-Kise?” I went from path to path to try and find him. “Kise, t-this isn’t funny!” My hands started sweating profusely when I heard footsteps nearing me once again.
As you walk, he keeps his eyes on you and stays hidden from your line of sight. The moment you get closer and closer to the end of the path, he decides it’s time for him to reunite with you. Kise tries to keep quiet as he creeps up on you from behind. Once he’s close enough, he places his hands on your shoulders without a warning and whispers “Boo!” into your ear.

(shane) The ride was more horrifying than I thought it would be. Suddenly, the ride gradually began to slow down before it came to a complete halt. All the sound effects stopped playing as well. We were now stuck in the middle of complete darkness. “What? Did it stop working?” My voice echoed against the walls of the room. We waited for minutes, but the ride still hasn’t moved an inch. I unbuckled my seatbelt and stood up, carefully stepping out of the cart. “I think we should get out.”
Kise doesn’t say a word as he also gets out of the cart. Because he had seen this attraction before, he knows this part is the end of the cart ride but it continues to join the walking part of the attraction, not before a few more scares with flashing lights and actors chasing people to go to the path that connects to the walking side. He goes ahead and hides himself somewhere along the path. Pretty soon, the lights are flickering where you are and the sound effects slowly play eerie noises. The actors in costumes try to grab at you and scare you, making sure you can only run to the path.
