Mic Shootout
This blog post is regarding the mic shootout i recently conducted in Studio F. I recorded my friend, Jack Ellis, who is a vocalist. A Focusrite preamp was used on each recording for the sake of consistency.
I found it difficult to find professional quality articles on the internet regarding vocal micing as most were written by hobbyists and seemingly unqualified people. I resorted to YouTube where I found some videos made by people who seemed to be refutable. Each video featured a person walking through the process of positioning a microphone in front of a performer, and gave some advice regarding polar patterns, acoustic space, type of microphone, etc. The first video proved to be useful to me because the Youtuber recommended trying to align the top of the mic roughly with the bottom of your artists lip. This seemed like great advice because I wanted to capture some of the sound of Jack’s chest cavity during this session. This positioning felt right to me because it sat right in the middle of Jack’s mouth and chest cavity, which seemed appealing to me. The second video did not provide any information that I used immediately in this session, but I did however still find it to be useful. I never quite understood the purpose of putting a large mic like a U87 upside down on a mic stand, and thought it was something engineers did to be hip. This video however suggests that this is a great technique to use if your artist needs a music stand, which I never had really understood before. Jack did not need music stand for this session, hence I did not utilize this new technique, but I will definitely keep it in mind for the future.
The four mics used were the Shure SM7b, Neumann U87, Electro Voice RE20, and Royer R-121. I used a Focusrite preamp on each mic for the sake of consistency. I chose the Focusrite preamp because I thought it would have the least amount of coloration on my signal.
The RE20 had a great sound. It had a little more mid/low register presence than some of the other mics, which I actually really liked. Overall, this mic had a very dark and smooth quality to it. The The SM7b sounded much worse than I had expected, it made Jack’s voice sound more sibilant than any of the other mics, and the high end of his voice sounded much more abrasive, and less smooth than in some of the other examples. The Royer R-121 on the other hand had a really nice and round sound, especially in the high end which was much smoother than that of the SM7b. This mic was extremely warm, round, and smooth, but I do feel that it does not have the greatest clarity of all the mics, as it does seem to be a little bit muddy. My guess is that this is due to a boost in mid range response. The U87 has the greatest clarity of all the mics, as frequency response sounded like it was the flattest and most consistent. There is a perfect balance of high, mids, and lows in this recording, and there is not an extra emphasis on any plosives or sillibant noises.
I’d place the U87 as #1 on my list due to the fact that it had the flattest frequency response and therefore the greatest clarity. Next I’d choose the Royer. Despite its lower clarity, I think the warmer texture it gave the recording was very nice on Jack’s voice, and would stylistically fit a piece like that. Next I would choose the RE-20 because I think it brought out more of the low end of Jack’s voice than I would have liked to hear. Finally, I’d place the SM7b as #4 on my list, because I was not a fan of how sibilant it made Jack’s voice sound.

Star Wars Alien Species - Muun
Scipio, the Muun homeworld and Muunilinst, major colony have been the financial center of the galaxy for millennia. When the Republic realized a need for a standard currency, the Muuns were a natural choice to spearhead it's distribution and handling. Muunilinst is well defended and easily reached by Republic warships. The Muuns, for the most part, take their responsibility in stride.

When the Old Republic gave way to the Emperor's New Order, the Muuns were among the few non-Human Species left untouched. The Imperials conceded that no Species was better equipped to oversee the galactic economy, and they were unwilling to risk a financial reprisal. Imperial administrators were tasked with monitoring the Muuns to ensure that Imperial credits would not find their way into Rebel Alliance coffers, but the New Order had little to fear from the Muuns, whose unwavering integrity prohibited such devious conduct.
Muuns are generally greedy both in business and personal life. They rarely overextend themselves, preferring calculated risks over rash actions. They are extraordinarily adept at mathematics, able to calculate statistics, odds, and intricate formulas quickly and with little effort.

Muuns were tall and gaunt humanoids with thin bodies and elongated heads with hairless craniums. They also had pasty-white/pale pink to grey skin, most likely because the vast majority of the species did not like traveling, even on-planet, and usually stayed indoors. Muuns also had tiny ears in the middle of the sides of their heads. In addition, they had flat noses and slim mouths. Muun voices often sound nasal due to their small noses. Muuns had long arms and legs, making them appear very gaunt. They also had very thin waists and long, thin fingers. Members of the species also had three hearts, one normal heart and two that were consciously controlled, a trait often used to increase blood flow in low temperatures. This also may have contributed to a longer life-span. The average Muun stands about 1.9 meters or 6.2 feet tall.

Muuns age at the following stages:
1 - 10 Child
11 - 15 Young Adult
16 - 50 Adult
51 - 79 Middle Age
80 - 94 Old
Examples of Names: Ta'hat Gar, San Hill, Marhu Koss, Emont O'ock, Vedo Sillib.
Languages: Muuns speak a language of the same name. It consists of two sounds- "Em" and "Um"- combined at varying pitches, frequencies, and orders to create a language similar to Binary. Written Muun is a mathematical language and simple shorthand for spoken Muun.
