what's interesting to me about skwisgaar and toki is that during the run of the show you had skwisgaar being snarky and pretty mean at times to toki. yet you could also see that he cared, that toki was his friend and that he enjoyed hanging with him. on the other hand, toki who both admired and hated skwisgaar didn't actually seem to show care for him in the most basic of levels. almost as if skwisgaar was this untouchable thing that he didn't need to be concerned for, because skwisgaar was not a mere mortal. and thus, out of toki's reach.

in aotd though, you see toki being so caring for skwisgaar. so concerned. he's the first one to notice skwisgaar passed out because of the explosion, he's the one carrying him to safety, and he's still checking on him as skwisgaar slowly recovers. when they all think he's gonna die he reassures skwisgaar he'll see him in the after life and he even picks him up after they regain their consciousness post-defeating salacia. rather than viewing skwisgaar as his idol or his enemy, he sees him as a person. a person that he loves and wants to take care of.

and while skwisgaar is, ironically, more moody during aotd, he's right there with toki at all times. he lets toki hold him despite initially protesting against it, he teaches toki the guitar again without berating him, he quietly comforts him when toki breaks down. skwisgaar is clearly overwhelmed by everything that’s been going on but he’s still by toki’s side constantly.

if there’s anything we can take away from aotd is that even though these guys have a rocky history, they deeply care and want to be there for each other. and whatever issues they still have, they can work them out, because the love for one another is already there.
