did i really just deadass read a post about recognizing a//i images (i did it for signs of a//i "photos" to be informed about deepfakes) which had "notice the dead look in his eyes" (and its a picture of a guy with my normal resting expression) and a section on a//i drawing styled images which lists "a strong blush in the middle of the face and ears" as a possible a//i gene//rated image sign...

Saw Detective Pikachu so I guess here is my Review™
Tumblr media
This movie seems to separate the fandom quite a bit, isn’t it? so I will start by saying that I loved it and didn’t feel it was “so so” or “good but not so good” at any momment, in fact I really don’t get why it only got 66% in Rotten Tomatoes.
More stuff and mini spoilers under the cut
In general this movie kinda felt like a live action version of the anime movies... which may be either good or bad for some of you here. This because for both good and bad reasons so I think I better list them:
The Bad
- Sometimes the acting wasn’t good, specially at the beginning of the movie (sometimes I was like “come on dude, at least drop a tear!”). This mostly because the actors are new and young, but after a while it gets better and I didn’t felt like I was just watching some guys act but something that was really happening, I felt like I was living the movie and thats something every movie should make you feel.
- Just like in the anime, some weird stuff happens at some points, stuff that we didn’t know could happen (Holograms? Mewtwo does what now?! etc) or perhaps it was just invented for this movie. But to be fair Pokémon was always like that, is more a sci-fiction setting with some fantasy.
- No Pokémon Battles! Or at least not a proper one. We only get to see part of some but we don’t even see how it finished! We didn’t get to see a full pokémon battle the way we know them!
- The ending wasn’t bad but felt kinda empty? I wanted to know some more about these characters and specially the world they live in, maybe a subtle mention of what may happen in a future movie?, but... is no more than “characters get what they wanted and they lived happily ever after”. Im still hyped for more pokémon movies in the future tho.
The Good
- THE POKÉMON!!! Everything about them is perfect! First, they used a varied selection of them, from popular ones like Greninja to forgotten ones like Loudred or Joltik. And their cgi models are so lovely! I disagree with those who say that sometimes the cgi looked too unrealistic, but besides, I loved the way the pokémon behaved! it felt like they were real breathing animals which to me is a way more important than how good the cgi is.
- The plot is actually an interesting take on the franchise. Something outside what we usually see in Pokémon. Yep, there was a lack of battles or catching mons, but common, we have already seen that like a thousand times in all the other games, animated movies, etc.
- Ryan Reynolds as a chubby Pikachu is fantastic. As I guess is mandatory is this kind of hollywood movies (and specially in one starred by the star of Deadpool) Pikachu says some adult jokes here and there but unlike other movies here they were subtle and didn’t felt like out of place. I mean, come on, is the same franchise were this happens:
Tumblr media
- Its both fun for hardcore and casual pokémon fans. A lot of people I know are not that much into Pokémon yet they loved the movie. Pokémon are monsters that you can catch in a pokéball and play and battle with them; Pikachu is a chubby electric rodent; that’s all you need to know. But of course, those who like me are really into the franchise will recognize a lot of easter eggs.
In the end: Go see it! Is fun, cute, action packed and emotional. Perhaps yes, could have been done a little better but is not at all a bad movie or not-so-good movie, is really good and glady the first american movie adaptation of a videogame/anime that doesn’t sucks.
