@summonshadcw + i was raised by the wolves
cassidy remembers the isenulf growing up, the white wolves she thought were dogs, learning when one nearly took a hand off that they were weapons. a lesson she was reminded of once again as she's chased through the winter winds. druskelle are long dead their blood staining her flesh, a knife still clutched in her hand. a patch of ice sends her sliding into a tree, just barely managing to avoid hitting her head.
the wolf is young, she knows because the druskelle that had chased her was young too. which maybe why she hesitated for a moment, either that or the way the cold was eating away at her skin. as the wolf lunges at her, sinks its teeth into the flesh of her arm, her wrist bending to slash its throat. in that moment she feels it, a rush of power, fire at her fingertips, her body melting off the frost from her skin.
only it had not just been the bite at her arm, but claws digging into her skin. panting, she looks at the wolf with a sense of sadness, regretting having to take the life of a creature only doing all it knew. the rest of the day is a blur, cassidy is later unable to recall exactly how she survived. lucky to have made it out of the permafrost while she was being chased, cassidy managed to drag both herself and the isenulf to a second army out post.
she remembers bits and pieces, refusing to let go of the wolf. two days later when fully awake she writes a letter to the general.
druskelle in full force in ryevost and tsibeya, hiding anywhere they can. barely made it out alive and there was an incident. i'll be home in a few days and will need to meet with you immediately. regards, cassidy.
the next morning she does what must be done, strips the wolf of its fur, cooks the meat, preserving it so that it will last her the journey back to the little palace. cassidy cleans the bones and packages them, knows that they will need to be made into something she can wear. that afternoon she leaves for the little palace, stopping only when absolutely necessary to rest. still, everything passes in a blur. aches in her entire body and scratches across her chest and thigh to match the bite in her arm that hadn't been fully healed.
once at the little palace, cassidy is quick, goes directly to aleksander's rooms. bathes there and changes into one of his night shirts before climbing into bed. the bones and fur of the wolf lay in her bag next to her, feels the last week taking over her aching body, the chill of the permafrost still eating away at her beneath her skin. is just drifting off to sleep when she hears the creak of the door. saying nothing, cassidy slides over in the bed and makes room for aleksander.
"i left before i was supposed to, wasn't fully healed. but we need to talk about what happened. right now...right now i need you to lay with me for a little."
