I think I’m still stuck on the doors aono kun opens simply because it still is one of a kind in the dimension it explores shoujo-typical tropes and horror in an equally weighted way. I always bring back ghost hunt since I can’t really equate much else to this genre-wise but there’s a bit of the sacrifice of the “young girl lead” driven storyline for something much more inclined to seinen or shounen readers like I feel happened with ghost hunt even if it wasn’t too intentional.. (mai liking kazuya in the anime was such an ordeal for me because the reciprocal emotional exchange is vital imo in what pushes a “shoujo” drama storyline forward, and that wasn’t present much in the way I wanted / aka the ghost stories were cool, the interpersonal relationships even outside romance were bland + if there’s one thing that drives shoujo to me it’s that)

I’m just hung up because not once was yuri’s feelings made to look juvenile or a side plot to the horror at hand but a vehicle to carry the plot. It’s intrinsic to it. I suppose hikaru ga shinda natsu is also something I relate to aono kun a lot though I do think it’s hinging more or less on the horror of the situation bc otherwise even this comparison can differ slightly (ie “this horrible thing has happened TO yoshiki and hikaru” versus “this horrible thing has happened with/within yuri and aono”).

All I’m trying to say at the end of this is that it isn’t necessarily that the blend of these genres come out at different points - not one scene is necessarily “shoujo” or “horror” - but something about being able to go through the journey with them and still FEEL like you’re reading kimi ni todoke or kare kano because of the same familiar reoccurring themes found in these classics in what is essentially just a horror retelling of them… that’s what makes it so so special

I'm very sad about this, but I was immediately invested on a deeply emotional level and my mental health is suffering because of how invested I've become... also I feel extra extra sad and sorry for Fujimoto because his friend possessed his body to make out with his weird girlfriend[who had the most insane nosebleed & they got covered in her blood] without permission, and then a second time to flirt with his weird girlfriend, and he's falling in love with the weird girlfriend of his ghost friend, that also possesses her body and I'm fairly certain she's going to die because of it... also this just keeps getting weirder and scarier

How the worst aspects of Aono-kun's life & his existence after his death become gradually unearthed, being driven to the brink and getting more and more heavily enmeshed with Yuri as his last link to humanity and being and happy even as he gradually destroys her. How consuming love can be and themes of one's self worth in relation to it.... The discussions of abuse and how different characters feel about it. The topic of grief omg. Somebody sedate me. The deep-rooted mother issues of it all. The dread thuis manga makes you feel.. the dread 😂

I knew you would like it, because the creator of csm likes it and has drawn fanart for it... and... well... clearly it made you feel something. Even the romance between them tears me apart. Ah I could cry thinking about it too hard right now. And the horror that is so excellently pulled off? I actually felt unease so many times. The scenes that are intimate yet don't feel voyeuristic, but personal instead... bububu. Random screenshots of them that I like. I like when he is so detached from his true self and is something else entirely. What is his true self anymore, really?

It's so... real. You know? So sickeningly real. How desperate Yuri was that she just sort of jumped into that relationship with Aono-kun and yet they ended up like this. And what has become of him... bah. I miss fujimoto and horie a lot too. They're all so personal to me I hope I die. I love the dialogue so much and I dont mind the parts where they overexplain the ghosts even if I sometimes skip them because sometimes it's interesting to me and also thats just mio being autistic half of the time it's fine. How far in have you gotten? Have you gotten to the part with yuri's sister it does cocomelon shit to me. Also Her reliance on her relationship on aono and this dream yuri has even ifthis doest Actually happen and isnt reflective of their relationship in the real world... that sort of contradicts how aono feels about her... crazy stuff.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim - AMAZING cast of characters and fun gameplay I didn’t want to stop playing, great plot I will be thinking about forever…

Bugsnax - very funny and cute and I loved catching every bugsnax and the fun characters I want to play the 2nd one when it comes out

Psyconauts - a cult classic for a reason. Loved it’s style but the final level is so bad I would not wish it upon my worst enemy. Looking forward to finishing 2 one day

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 - I haven’t gotten to finish this one yet (I got 80 hours in okay??) but I’m incredibly excited to get back to it. GOTY BABY!!! GAME OF ALL TIME!!

Cardcaptor Sakura - I think this is my first CLAMP manga I finished. LOVED sakura and shaoran they are so small. so many good aspects to this series and then all of the age gap bullshit is there so IDK hard to recommend but I enjoyed reading all of the parts that weren't about horrible relationships

Horimiya - CUTE I love romance where you get to follow them as a couple <3 there were a few bad spots in it (miyamura's piercings being compared to self harm in that one chapter.......???????) but over all a good read

Astra: Lost in Space - fun scifi adventure with good characters. pretty short and easy read. its fun

You Got Me, Senpai - SO CUTE one of the best relationships I've read in a manga. adorable.

Drowning Love - verrry good and complex, a mature story with darker elements (check out trigger warnings for it) and a very engaging coming of age story about two kinda horrible kids with too much attention pointed their way living in a small town. anime adaptation WHEN

Wake Up, Sleeping Beauty - super cute romance, supernatural elements. loved it

Orange - think this would be a perfect read if the time travel element wasn't explained like That and also Suwa >>> Kakeru and what they did to his character in that bonus story was just mean

Goodbye, Eri - everyone should read this. beautiful, stays with you. fantastic exploration on what arts purpose is

A Kiss, For Real - it was cute. the summary makes it sound more romance focused than it actually is, there is a lot of focus on the MCs journey of growth and what she wants to do with her life. Romance was cute but not exceptionally so

Takopi's Original Sin - overhyped as hell. depressing outlook on life. thought some of it was fine but it is overall too cruel to say i enjoyed it, especially with a cast this young

The Girl From The Other Side - I actually 100% cannot remember if I read this last year or not. anyways. BEAUTIFUL art, great characters, compelling mysteries

Junji Ito's Dissolving Classroom - not his best work by far, but it is one of his earliest so I don't care too much.

Spotless Love: This Love Cannot Be Any More Beautiful. - I haven't been adding the ones that aren't popular unless I really enjoyed them, but idk this one is just so wild I felt the need to throw it on here. girl who loves to clean x child assassin is certainly a relationship dynamic. they're funny

Akiba Maid War - this is not very good but it is entertaining so...

Ano Hana - rewatched this one finally! still one of the best dramas of all time. did you know childe and jintan have the same english VA bc I know. I know this now.

BNA - the plot point about how the furries were victims in the literal real world holocaust made me kind of hate this I won't lie. also the best friend fox girl Nazuna is one of the most unbearable characters ever. when you lead a cult pretending to be an important religious figure to a culture you are not part of because you like attention i guess?? it is not a good look in a show that already deals so heavily in antisemetic themes & imagery for it's villains.... sorry to whoever recommended this to me :( great animation

Dance Dance Danseur - did not like the MC but I did like the FMC and Rival character, good animation. I read the authors shoujo title Drowning Love this year and it should've gotten the adaptation TBH but this was fine, last few episodes carried

Death Parade - rewatched this one this year and it is still amazing. OP is still one of the best out there.

Do It Yourself!! - not incredibly remarkable yuri bait with a fantastic art style. its fine if you like cute girls doing cute things while being gay genre

Erased - for a mystery story the culprit is laughably obvious. the rest of it is pretty good though. oh lol other than the weird jokes about the protags taste in girls but it never followed through on anything so compared to other series im too tired to care

Keep Your Hand's Off Eizouken - starts off strong but I couldn't keep caring by the end tbh. it does not help I started it and then stopped for like 7 months and then finally finished the show so that's probably rly affecting my feelings

just a headcanon question for you for some deep thoughts, have you ever thought about what happened to sora's parents whether or not they're alive after the events of the first game?

Interesting that you ask this, because this is something I want to explore more and part of the reason I reblogged this meme! I'd like to develop Sora's parents into fully fleshed, named (mayyyybe designed?) OCs / guest muses on the blog at some point, but for now, have me projecting the thoughts that have been knocking around in my brain, in glorious word soup form.

Putting this under a cut because WOWIE it got really long, sorry about that!

We're working with crumbs here, but based one one line of dialogue for each parent, his mother was attentive to Sora's needs and could tell when things were wrong (yes I'm extracting this from "Sora, dinner's ready,") and his father was present enough in his life that he was rowing Sora and Riku to the play island as kids.

So, honestly...I feel like Sora's family is about what one would expect of a happy, healthy family. Mom and Dad in a happy marriage, well enough off to support one kid, loving and doting parents. Nothing really remarkable. The Aono family is just about as standard as standard can get.

And then, y'know, KH1 happened.

Here's what we know:

Destroyed worlds show up in the Realm of Darkness.

Some of a world's denizens are scattered to worlds in the Realm Between, like Traverse Town.

Someone who becomes a Heartless (+optionally, Nobody, if their heart is strong enough) and is then defeated goes to where it originally happened in order to be recompleted (or their heart/body dissolves to darkness to wait for the other component to be freed).

If the world where it originally happened isn't available, they go to a world like Traverse Town.

Selphie, Wakka, and Tidus are all alive and well after KH1, albeit with no memory of Sora.

Knowing ALL OF THIS, I think Sora's parents are alive and well, and may even potentially have some knowledge about their son's world-hopping adventures. It's possible that they appeared in Traverse Town at one point, but we never see them there (this is probably just on account of the game not deeming it necessary, but it's interesting to consider from an in-universe standpoint...). So, I think one of a few things could have happened:

After the Islands were destroyed, Sora's parents ended up in Traverse Town, perhaps in one of the districts that aren't accessible until DDD.

Sora's parents fell with the Islands and were sort of suspended in "sleep" for as long as the Islands were in the Realm of Darkness. They awoke to little to no memory of the Islands' destruction. I imagine something like this probably happens to most whose worlds get destroyed, or there'd be no order to preserve.

Sora's parents were defeated by and subsequently became Heartless during the destruction of the Islands. At some point, Sora defeated their Heartless (knowingly? Unknowingly? Shit, I didn't think about the angsty implications) and freed their hearts for eventual restoration, either in Traverse Town or on the Islands once they were restored. If I were to go with this, the degree to which they remember it all could be up in the air.

One thing I'm pretty settled on (primarily just because I love the angst of this trope, sue me) is that they were alive during KH2, and like Kairi, had only very faint memories of Sora, and even those were starting to fade. But they knew that they were missing something very important. There was an ache in their hearts, a hole whose shape was painfully familiar and yet they couldn't put a name to it...

By the end of KH2, Sora has probably come clean to them about the world-hopping stuff, if they didn't already remember their experiences during KH1. Donald probably objects to this. Sora loves his parents and trusts them to keep his secrets, so lol.

That's kinda all I've got right now and I'd love to flesh them out more / solidify their stories through the meme I reblogged! I'm not 100% married to any of these ideas just yet, but I love piecing things together like this based on teeny tiny lines we get in canon.

Finally, I want to shoutout this artist, who made it excruciatingly difficult to not just steal Eimi (/j) for the blog canon. Seriously, this woman imprinted herself on my brain and now is inextricably tied to the idea of Sora's mother for me, but I'm taking that energy and putting it towards a stab at my own interpretation! Just wanted to shout them out because I love their take on her.

♠ EP10: Yuri keeps running into a loop of halls (seems like a hallucinations) while following her ghost. Then a phone call from Mio, makes her snap back to reality. Mio tells her that she called because she was worried when the school chat was exploding about what happened in her classroom. Mio also tells her that she is happy for Yuri because she got to see Aono again. Their conversation turns to speaker mode, when Fuju appears and he tells them about "the REAL conversation between him and Aono, before he disappeared."

Aono tells his friend that he wants to go to a FAR AWAY place and needs him to lie to Yuri and tell her he passed on. & that he tried to pass on but couldn't figure out how. He tried but couldn't and that was after Yuri got a nosebleed and fainted.

Fuju remembers the kiss and SNAPS & we find out why he was severely traumatized by it.

F: "what the hell were you doing getting aroused in someone else's body?!" A: "it was in the moment... sorry." F: "in the moment?" A: "I thought you wouldn't be aware of it." F: "you mean it's okay if I didn't know about it? you've got to be kidding! I remember all of it! your disgusting behavior." A: "disgusting!" F: "it was disgusting! it was like an old man who is kissing a girl he was paying to date! don't put your left hand under her chest! I had a boob between the L shape of my thumb and pointer finger! that dirty way of touching without thinking and making excuses later, shows how small minded your personality is! on top of that, while touching her with your left hand, your right hand...."

Aono stops him from explaining further by apologizing on his knees. F: "I'll never forgive you. Idiot."

WELL. Aono goes back to explaining that his "far away" is not really far because he seems to be linked with Yuri. He can't move further than the town's station. He simply plans to stay away from her and be out of her sight.

[Back to the present] Yuri asks Fuju to take her to meet Aono in his hiding place (a mountain behind the school). Mio accompanies them by staying on the phone. On the way, Fuju tells Yuri that he promised to check on him once a week by using the coin trick.

Along the way, Fuju jumps over a tree-trunk on their path and then extends his hand to help Yuri cross over. SUDDENLY, strong wind blows and Fuju covers his face, then opens his eyes to find himself standing alone.

[alternative universe with weird colors] Yuri gets swept away but she is still on the phone with Mio. She describes her surroundings and the flowers that bloomed around her, which weren't there a minute ago. They try turning the call to video call but it doesn't work. Mio gets a call from Fuju through an app on her computer. But when Mio puts both her friends on speaker mode, Fuju can't hear Yuri's voice.

Mio thinks that Yuri got pulled into the spirits world.

Demonic-voice: "Yuri-chaaan~ Yuri-chaaaN~" Yuri: "Aono is calling." Mio: "he can't do anything without your permission. it's all up to you." Yuri: "He looked sad. he can't help but be here alone. I never considered his feelings. I want to meet him." Mio: "be careful."

Yuri continues walking towards the voice to find blank-faced-Aono.

A: "I waited." M: "did you find him?" A: "hang up the phone." Y: "I won't." A: "why won't you listen. hang up. hang up. hang up." Y: "I won't!"

Half of Aono's face turns demonic again and he says while tears fall from his eyes: "I'm cold" Yuri touches his bloody-sided-face.

A: "kiss me." Y: "deep down I thought that if I sacrificed myself to you, you'd be happy. but Aono wouldn't want that."

Yuri removes her hand and says: "that's why I came to have you return it to me. please return the kiss I gave you. one kiss from when we were in front of Mio's house. another one from when we were in the gym. I can't give you anything. so give it back."

A: "don't wanna!" Y: "give me my hair color back!" A: "no way!" Y: "give everything I gave you back to me!"

He complies anyways... He kisses her right feet, left hand and then her lips (just like she kissed him before).

Aono's face returns to normal and he smiles to her.

A: "Yuri." Y: "Aono, welcome back." A: "Sorry for lying." Y: "I'm the one who made you lie. I won't try to die anymore. Even if you pass on, no matter how lonely I am, or how painful it is, I won't die. I'll grow old and live until the day I die."

Then she hugs him.

Fuju finds her, smiles and says: "Aono." Then Yuri runs to Fuju's side and the three walk together into the future or whatever.

[at Mio's house] Y: "I can't offer him anything. that's the fundamental rule. each permission worked as an offering that made Aono's power grow stronger. therefore, by returning what I gave him, his powers got weakened." F: "he didn't turn your hair back to black. but let's head home." Y: "thank you both for everything."

[in class] Aono the ghost is still hovering around Yuri. He will eventually find a way to pass on but for now, he is with her. He helped her make 2 supportive friends and that is enough for her.

[on the way home] A: "I'm glad I met you." Y: "I love you so much."
