You know, I have seen people just equate Aegon the Conqueror with William the Conqueror and leave it at that.  But really besides “the Conqueror” there’s nothing that much in common with them.  The Targs changed some things, but culture wise not really (nobody was embracing incest as a proper practice…), but the Normans did.  Of course there’s similarities, but nothing personal.  Like looks, animal motifs, and values etc.  William the Conqueror actually has more in common with Jon Snow (whose real name is Aegon in the show).  There’s might be something about this on here, but I haven’t seen it.  So sorry if it’s been said before.  Also this isn’t directed at you.  I just like reading your blog and wanted to share my musings with you.  XD  I really couldn’t get it out of my head…
William was the Duke of Normandy.  Normandy meaning Northman Land.  Because it was created (as a gift from the French king) by Rollo and his group of Vikings who were also known as Northmen.  They married French women and with their children created the Normans.
Jon is of the Northmen only because of his mother and his uncle raising him.  There is no Northern association of any kind for the Targs.  The Targs don’t even look like what little has been recorded about the Normans.  William’s son Henry I was said to have had black hair.  The only thing I can really think of that is similar is the Normans were clean shaven and didn’t have beards.  But Vikings are famous for them and Normans were descended for them.
William the Conqueror was also called William the Bastard.  And it bothered him.  He could act rather impulsive when that got flung at him.
Jon was also bothered by his bastard status.  We all know about that.
Much is talked about how William the Conqueror conquered England, but he also had to fight for his own home, Normandy.  He became the duke at a young age due to his father (who ruled after his elder brother’s death) having died abroad.  Needless to say there were other people whose eyes were on Normandy.  3 of William’s guardians were killed and there is stories of how William had to be hidden.  A rebellion broke out and William had to flee and he took refuge with the French king, Henry I, his future uncle-in-law.  The French king then helped William reclaim his home.
Jon, of course, along with Sansa, had to fight for Winterfell.  They had help from the Wildlings and the Mormonts, but they would have lost without the Knights of the Vale.  And yeah, Danii is trying to reclaim the Iron Throne, but it’s not the same.  Unlike Danii, William was raised in Normandy and was made the duke.  The Norman nobles acknowledged the ducal authority and he was always supported and despite wars he was not overthrown with another replacing him as the Duke of Normandy (never officially).  Yeah, the Boltons did replace the Starks for a time, but they were never truly accepted by the Northmen.
William was described as being a fighter and a horseman without equal.  He was strong enough to draw bows that others were unable to and he had great stamina.
Well, everyone knows Jon’s ability as a fighter.  And of course being a great horseman makes one think of his mother, Lyanna.
And now I come to one of the reasons William the Conqueror is one of my fave historical figures.  He LOVED his wife Maud(or Matilda) of Flanders and she loved him (they were also cousins).  They had a successful and affectionate marriage with 9 or 10 children.  William was faithful to her and didn’t have any bastards.  There’s a legend (probably not true) that when William proposed marriage to her via a messenger (naturally it started as a political alliance) Maud was said to have refused by saying she was too highborn to marry a bastard.  Insulted, William rode over (the destination depends on the version and one is her own home) and threw her to the ground by her braids and then rode off.  Maud’s father, was of course outraged and for the insult he was going to war against William.  But before swords could be drawn Maud stopped it by refusing to marry anyone, but William.
Of course us Jonsas believe that Jon and Sansa will have a loving marriage that is also a political alliance.  A lot of us believe that when the North finds out Jon is a Targ they won’t be happy and will probably want Jon’s head.  And we believe the matter will be settled by Jon and Sansa’s marriage.  How that will go down is what we’re guessing at.  So bloodshed (mainly Jon’s) could be avoided by Sansa marrying Jon.
Henry I of France was not happy with William marrying his niece, his sister’s daughter. Maud was the daughter of the Count of Flanders one of the most powerful noblemen in France.  She was also descended from Charlemagne and Wessex royalty (that helped William in England).  Henry viewed that as a threat and then supported the barons against William, his nephew-in-law.  He invaded Normandy twice which failed both times.  It only ended with Henry I’s death.
A lot of us Jonsas believe Danii will not be happy with Jon’s true parentage.  She will see him as a threat and then move to eliminate him.  So the once allies, will then be enemies.  And it’ll probably end with Danii’s death.
Rollo, the one who founded Normandy, ruled with strict laws and hanged murderers and thieves making Normandy one of the safest places in Europe.  Also he was a Viking and they valued courage, truth, honor, fidelity, discipline, hospitality, industriousness, self-reliance, and perseverance and family was important to them.  And there’s all kinds of legends that are not true about them (i.e. the horned helmets).
It reminds me of the North and their code of justice and honor and their values.  The Stark children were sheltered and didn’t face all the danger and intrigue that happened constantly in the south.  Of course that changed thanks to Theon’s betrayal with the Ironborn and the Boltons, but they are unpopular.  Also the North, which was really seen with Robb, got all kinds of exaggerated legends about them like the Vikings did.
And mentioning Rollo…  His Scandinavian name was Hrolfr which literally means “fame and glory for the wolf”.  And William means “determined protector”.
The only Targ that has any connection to wolves is of course, Jon Snow.  And Jon is of course determined to protect the realm of men.  It was all in the Night Watch’s oath.  Also the Normans introduced chivalry (so I assume making oaths as well) to England.
That got longer than I thought. XD  Well, of course William the Conqueror and Jon Snow aren’t exactly alike (as no character in GoT is exactly like any one historical figure), but there are a lot of similarities, I believe.

so a bunch of people are talking about how the national library, the azhar library, and a cultural center in palestine has been destroyed, and worse, it was deliberately targeted for destruction by israel, and if you cared about the notre dame but not this then youre a piece of shit white supremacist etc etc
....okay.
first of all, i cannot find a single reliable source that the library has been destroyed. i found a tweet from the 6th, but no news articles. and google, as helpful as ever in aiding genocide, really wants me to read what israellycool has to say on the matter, as no matter how many different search terms i use, that shitty blog is either the first or one of the first results. no i will not link it, go find it for yourself if youre that curious, but im sure if you tried to fact check this at all you already saw that childish fascist screed already.
secondly, imperialists have always targeted centers of learning and information storage. massively important cultural artifacts for all of humanity were lost during the iraq war, and they were not ‘lost’ so much as the US deliberately rounded up librarians and intellectuals and murdered them and then bombed museums and libraries, a MASSIVE geneva convention violation. i remember hearing about that growing up just a few miles outside of NYC in a NJ suburb and i remember losing all sympathy for american soldiers who got themselves blown up in a war that was more about forcing a people to submit to US will than anything else. (yes, including oil.)
what is the point of all this?
i had very complicated feelings abt the notre dame fire, mostly because i hate france, i hate europeans, and i hate white people, but notre dame was not built using colonial money, and the very original building was connected to an antisemitic pogram but it had already happened hundreds of years before the present day notre dame construction. i saw some spicy takes like ‘well even if the notre dame wasnt funded by colonialism, everything in europe before the slave trade was made from jewish capital!’ which was like, oh, so we’re all medieval scholars now? bc thats not even a little bit goddamn true.
and even if it were, there is something that truly angers me about all of these hot takes. because theyre not only false, but they look for some ‘us vs them’ justification for why we deserve to be free. no, mon frère, we deserve liberation simply because we do. it has nothing to do with inherent goodness.
the reason we dont like europe is because imperialism is objectively exploitative of the most vulnerable and marginalized. trying to look for this primordial evil in europe and a primordial good in other populations completely defeats the purpose of examining things through an anticolonial (or marxist) lens. we do not deserve liberation because we are Good, but because, as marx said, systems of oppression are not sustainable in the long term. you cannot fuck over billions of people forever. they will eventually demand something better than what we have. it doesnt mean each and every one of us is a good person, because what is good is highly relative, and denying or granting liberation based on goodness or good deeds is something a religion does, and liberation ideologies are not religions but means to an end.
i dont know if those libraries were destroyed recently. and if they werent, i dont know why people would lie about that. israels relentless campaign of terror over the past few weeks should be enough of a call to action, rather than some weak ‘a building was destroyed in a place no one cares about’ nonsense. i care about palestine because they are all my comrades in arms. they are my comrades, oppressed by the same system of oppression that oppresses millions of brazilians. those systems look different everywhere in order to adapt to the situation, of course, but they are the same, and thus, our struggle is the same. even if the palestinians had no history, had no libraries, had no culture, i would always be on their side because they are my comrades. we are one and the same, together, against imperialism and apartheid.
likewise, making a call to action, appealing to zionists who wept over the notre dame but not this important palestinian cultural landmark....listen. it is not the building itself. it never was. white supremacists latched onto the notre dame fire as a symbol of western civilization being taken over by THE OTHER (which i am very much a fucking part of!) and trying to get them to care about a building theyve never heard of that does not make up the western canon of Important Things is absolutely useless. theyll say ‘well hamas bombs palestinians’ and act like that was the most devastating proof against seeing palestinians are real people who deserve to live outside of an open air prison. is it true? who fucking cares. every palestinian could be a member of hamas, they could all be bomb making experts and love bombs and be really into just bombing everything including their own homes, and they would still deserve to live outside of israels apartheid regime. but you cant explain this to someone who is determined to view you as a Thing. you cannot.
i cried when the notre dame burned. by the logic of a lot of idiots on this site, i must be a white supremacist. sure, whatever. its extremely not true so you can say whatever you want. but the issue is that galvanizing others into action using buildings is never going to work. because it is and isnt about the buildings. i extremely dont care about white french people because like, why do i have to care about them. but i care deeply about palestinians and my solidarity will always lie with them, whether or not they have nice cultural things that i like. it doesnt really matter if i like palestinian culture and hate french culture. thats not the point. one gets to thrive because of the bounties imperialism has given it, while the other rots on the vine as a direct result of imperialism. i care about that.  and we can go into what it means to care and if caring as an individual (esp a colonized individual) matters very much at all in terms of political action but like.....this narrative of ‘you have to care only about the third world’ is funny to me because you guys just dont. you dont do it. youre very eager to use us when convenient, but you dont really. so ultimately, what does that mean? nothing i guess.

Story Time: My experience as an atheist with an insane Christian sociology professor (long) via /r/atheism
Submitted June 10, 2020 at 04:51AM by Beck_yeahh (Via reddit https://ift.tt/3hbPClr) Story Time: My experience as an atheist with an insane Christian sociology professor (long)
I'm new to this sub and reddit in general. I hope this post is obeying all the rules.
Last year I was a 19 year old attending a community college in the deep south. The college was as Christian and conservative as it could legally get being a public institution, but I typically felt very at ease and welcomed by everyone.
But then there was this lady. I'll call her Lee. She is married to a board chairman and uses her good ol' boy status to preach her dogma through her college courses. She can say whatever she wants! When I first met Lee, she was my Sociology instructor. I love sociology, and I was super excited for her class on the first day. Lee cut to the chase. Her first order of business was for everyone to share their political views amongst each other. It was scandalous. It was inflammatory. And I loved it. I was an art kid with bold and liberal views in a very conservative environment. Lee was starting a conversation. And I loved it. She assigned homework where we listed our religion, political party, race, and a bunch of personal information. I gave up that I was liberal and agnostic atheist.
And then I was a target.
The next class, she has learned my name. While I'm getting settled before class, she comes up to me and asks me to come to her Students4Life meeting (a prolife student organization that tries to discourage people from getting abortions). I said, "um, sorry. But my views are a little.." and I laughed nervously. I just told the prolife leader that I support abortions. She responded with, "we'll talk about that." And then walked away to start class. At this point I thought maybe this class wasnt going to be such an open conversation after all.
You guys wouldn't fucking believe. You're going to think I'm exaggerating. Every. Fucking. Chapter. She switched it up to fit her conservative and traditional Christian values. She ignored parts of the book she disagreed with, and when the section was too big, she just said "the science is flawed." She showed us countless videos. I'll share some of the ones that took me off guard the most. Some of them weren't necessarily offensive but COMPLETELY irrelevant in an academic setting (several videos of foreign people converting to Christianity after having miraculous experiences; an autistic children's choir singing about God that she played for us every single day in the month of December). She spent a week talking shit about Planned Parenthood and the different waves of feminism, how the first one is the only good one. She tried to argue that cultural appropriation is okay with a video of a white guy in a cheap costume of a stereotypical Chinese man. And everything pointed back to god. I could go on and on. And on.
I finally spoke up one day. I had taken a very thorough and amazing Art History course and I was fascinated with the cave paintings in the Chauvet Cave in France. These paintings are between 32,000 and 30,000 years old, when humans and Neanderthals existed at the same time. So this woman says, "there is no proof that hunting-gathering societies existed more than 10,000 years ago." And I was real confused. Isnt EVERY human society before agriculture and settlement a hunting-gathering society?? My hand shot straight up. "There are cave paintings in Chauvet, France that depict herds of animals and signs of religious social behaviour, and those paintings are at least 27,000 years old." She paused and said, "the science behind that is flawed." Okay. I'll trust you and your bible math over an entire team of professionals.
This particular video was near the end of the course lmao and I had a lot to say: Make America Masculine Again
I left out a lot of juicy stuff but at the end of the course she actually tried to convert me. In my final assignment (about self discovery and shit) I wrote that I discovered that I have the right and the obligation to question everything that is handed to me, including religion and standards of morality. I said I will no longer lay down and accept what the world tells me is true but what I find proof to believe is true. And she loaded THIS on me (direct quote in my direct messages on Canvas):
"I grew up with the opposite, perhaps, of what you describe- a very liberal upbringing where it was suggested that we choose our own truth, what is right, what we want, etc. But in the end it seems a terrible injustice to tell someone that they can make up their own truth. It is obvious that "our truth" either lines up with the actual Truth or it does not. Does choosing not to believe make truth any less true? Truth is objective- no matter what we choose to believe- the truth stands.
I wish someone had told me that Jesus said He is the Truth. At least they could have shared and I could have chosen to believe or not. Jesus- the way, the Truth, and the life. He said no one comes to the Father except by Him."
Keep in mind my essay was not about denying religion but questioning religion along with everything else. Anyways, I'm done. Did any of you guys read this? I'm just ranting haha.
Edit: corrected a typo
