clock facts with haiz!!!!!!! these are the innards of a very common breed of electrical watch:
Tumblr media
as you can see it contains JÖRMUNGARDR the world serpent that coils itself around the world of men (very long) and THE TIMEKEEPING CRYSTAL. thanks to modern technology (google image search) we now know what the crystal looks like:
Tumblr media
i must admit i always thought the crystal was going to be crystal shaped. yes yes the machine powering crystals we've all seen it in the saturday morning cartoons. instead it has turned out to be in the shape of a technomancer wizarding staff so i am NOT dissappointed. and of course as we all know the quartz is not actually what powers a clock it merely vibrates at a steady frequency when activated by an electrical current, in this case 32 768 Hz. perfect for keeping the time :)

here are my pics from the highlight of this weekend: the vasa ship museum!
for those who don't know, vasa is an extremely well preserved warship from the 1600ds - it lay submerged for 333 years, but it had sunk so fast it hadn't even made it to salt water, where the worms would've gotten to it. it is a fantastically ostentatious spectacle, the perfect folly of kings. the reason it sank is because they made the ballast deck too small (because the king wanted two gun decks) and the wind simply. tipped it over. it's SO funny.

today we had a guest lecturer at our school tell us about the early history of wrist watches, which was very cool.
of course, what i find very interesting is the Gender Drift - the first wrist watches were more like jewelry, like bracelets, and worn by women. which makes sense, since they were presumably less likely to wear a waistcoat to keep a pocket watch in. many early wristwatches were actually just pocket watches in leather straps, worn by hunters, soldiers, and expedition crewmembers. as it turns out, having a watch easily available on your wrist is VERY useful, use and technology for it made bounds and leaps during WW1 - and because soldiers fighting in war are such brave manly men, the perception of wrist watches shifted to acceptable masculinity. it's interesting to me because NOW watches are like, THE Manly Status Symbol Jewelry Piece.
the reason i'm telling you all this is because i manages to hunt down my favourite vintage newspaper clipping from the lecture powerpoint. let me present to you: WRISTWATCH CHAD

(because of this i have now looked up Dude Etymology. apparently it used to be a synonym for a Fop or a Dandy, an Extremely Well-dressed Man)

i'm currently doing a practice placement at a really fancy, recently renovated watchmaker workshop! it's got a big window view over the royal residence for when any royals are in town - and as fate would have it, some of them are :') several of the watchmakers keep window watching to see what activity is happening out there. enrichment

did the big balance staff making exam yesterday...! i'm feeling pretty optimistic about how it went, but we'll see! here are the pieces i made for practice (+ one legit balance staff we were given as example, but i cannot be bothered to single it out), and also size comparison to the winding stems we did last year :D

if i had a nickel for every heavyweight, sturdy and embroidered No Expenses Spared fancy totebag that's been gifted to me by a watch-related company visiting our school and handing out goodie bags, i would have two nickels. i don't have any nickels though. only totebags
