Tello drops out of the sky, rolling forward and coming up with a knife to the mutt’s throat at the exact second it starts to leap at him. They glance over their shoulder as they move, and Leonardo catches a glimpse of a sharp grin before they’re gone again, spinning their staff around to connect solidly with another mutt’s head and turning with the momentum of the rebound to block the strike of a mutated human.

He takes the knife they left behind, flipping it in his hand and throwing it. It barely misses Tello’s arm, but they stopped just in time. Whether they saw him out of the corner of their eye, or just trusted him to be there, he’s not sure.

Tello half-circles him, steps light, always on the move. They take in his injuries without slowing, and he knows from the tilt of their chin that they don’t see anything concerning. They remind him of a greyhound, sometimes, fast and laser-focused on their prey. For all the fucked up things this apocalypse has done to their family, he thinks it’s sparked something in both of them that makes them feel electric as the gods.

He pauses, and Tello stops with him, turning back to fall into step with him even though he didn’t make a sound to tell them he was leaving. They don’t hear what he does yet, not since the explosion two years ago, but they trust him. Maybe a little too much, he thinks sometimes, but it’s better than shattering under stress.

A mutant leaps down at them from a fourth-story window, screeching wildly as it drops down onto Leonardo’s shoulders, driving him down onto the cracked concrete. He rolls, the end of Tello’s staff nearly taking off his head as it connects solidly with the mutant’s instead. It falls back, still screeching, and writhes around to its hands and feet a moment later, scuttling toward them on all fours.

He drops to one knee, holding it back with a hand on its shoulders as it snarls and snaps at him, cursing himself for not having his sword ready. Tello’s there a second later, rolling across his shoulders to plant a grenade. He steps back, and they’re there before he has time to look for them, shielding him even as he ducks his head to look under their arm, watching their back.

The mutant’s fingers claw at their battle shell, but then the grenade goes off. With powdered herbicide filling it instead of gunpowder, it’s no danger to humans, but in the time it takes Leonardo to blink, the mutant’s been melted from the inside out and flops down across the pavement, one hand twitching feebly. No threat any more.

Tello pulls him to his feet, looking at him more closely now, but again finding nothing. They let out a breath and step into his space, knocking their foreheads together as they squeeze his wrist, before they step back and halfway across the street in what looks like one move.

They’re nervous now, not wanting to spend much more time away from the rest of the resistance. He can see it in how tightly they hold their tech-staff, and the quick, birdlike way their head moves as they look around, checking windows above them and burned-out car wrecks around them.

He whistles, mimicking the blackbird they loved when wildlife still existed. They turn to face him fully, trusting him to warn them of anything coming behind them. When he starts moving, they do too, keeping on his left side. Half because they can’t hear from their right, and half because they know he doesn’t want to lose his other arm.

He reaches for their hand as he ducks into a side street, not wanting to be out on the main road any more. It never stops being unsettling, being the only thing moving on what used to be the most active street in the city. Having one of his siblings close at his side is the only thing that makes him feel the slightest bit okay.

He stops suddenly, knowing without looking that Tello barely avoided crashing into him. They let go of him, tapping at their arm panel, and sending a small drone up a moment later. There used to be dozens of them, but now there’s only three left.

It whirrs quietly down the street, more agile than Leonardo could ever imagine being as it follows its heat-seeking programming. What it finds is unsettling, too. By Krang standards, the biomech isn’t big – it kind of looks like a minivan and an elephant had the weirdest alien baby ever – but it’s still capable of causing real damage.

Tello glances at him, head tilted in the direction of the mech, and he nods. They nod back, give him a two-fingered salute, and launch into the air. The jetpack built into their battle shell activates in midair, carrying them to the top of the row of apartment buildings hiding the biomech from their view.

Leonardo takes the long way around, moving at a jog so there’s not too much distance between them. By now, they don’t even need to talk about the plan. Tello draws its attention to them while they’re safely out of reach, though close enough to be a tantalising target, and Leonardo comes in at the right time to chop the thing in half.

When the biomech roars, he portals in, appearing in a blink of blue light and vanishing just as quickly. Biomechs have a hard time tracking fast objects, so if he portals in and out half a dozen times, he can get an idea of where the thing is without it making any real attempt at catching him.

This time, though, it doesn’t go like it’s supposed to.

Leathery bat wings fold out from the biomech’s sides, metal struts shining where bone should be, and it launches into the air. It doesn’t fly very well, but the wings give it enough thrust that it can hook one claw-hand over the top of the building.

Tello jumps, their jetpack silent.

Leonardo is there in an instant, recognising the new plan half from practise and half on instinct. His new portal catches them before they’ve gone two stories, and they fall through with their jetpack newly come to life, just enough to stop them from slamming into the ground on the other side.

He stands between Tello and the biomech, shell to the enemy. It won’t take long for his twin to get back on their feet, and by the time the biomech notices where they went, they’ll both be ready to take it on.

Tello bares their fangs, an angry hiss warning the biomech away even as they brush past Leonardo to confront it.

They split on instinct, Tello going to the left, and Leonardo to the right. The biomech swipes a limb at Tello, but they roll to the side at the last moment, avoiding any harm.

Leonardo ducks under its next swipe, crouching to be a smaller target as he makes another portal. One end in front of Tello, and the other, showing the middle of the biomech’s hulking skull.

Gravity floods from the portal, dragging the biomech’s head toward the ground as Tello opens fire. Whatever brains it had are turned to slush before the gravity’s strong enough to pull its head to touch the road, and Leonardo switches one end of the portal with a flick of his weapon, bringing himself to Tello’s side as the biomech’s carcass collapses where he was a moment ago.

Tello nips at his wrist when he touches their shoulder, but that’s on him for touching without asking, and he holds both hands up in silent promise that he won’t try again. They huff a breath at him, frowning a moment, before stepping lightly on his foot – pressure, not pain – and turning away.

He keeps pace with them until they’re in sight of the building where the resistance is staying. Some watchman’s just barely visible on the roof, Angelo next to them.

Leonardo walks a little faster, getting out in front of Tello with a little hop and turning to walk backward.

They raise an eyebrow, then grin when he sticks his tongue out at them. They mime a bite at him in return, teeth closing on air, and he laughs and pulls the end of their bandana up over their face. They grumble in the back of their throat, words indistinct, and jab him in the knee with their staff. He gets them in a headlock a second later, not taking it to heart when they bite his wrist again, and only lets go when they get to the door.

Additionally, I aimed to shrink the computing power necessary to execute the program from a power-hungry 65W desktop Intel CPU to a 10W Nvidia Jetson Nano micro-GPU. While working under the HPC branch of Pomona’s ITS department, I set out to develop a Python program that enables a small Tello EDU drone to autonomously follow an object. While these combinations have been successfully harnessed by both researchers and commercial drone producers to a certain extent, the computer vision component remains a technical challenge for one reason: it requires an intense amount of computing power. The autonomous piloting of a drone requires the symphonious combining of GPS, LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), and computer vision data. Programming A Drone with Python Introduction

When I was a kid a prime part of my childhood was toy RC cars. The thrill of being able to drive something at a young age like that was amazing. As I grew up, I transitioned into new things like riding dirt bikes and ATV’s. Nothing has really changed as now I’m a full adult. I still love driving any sort of vehicle with an engine on it whether that be something anywhere on the spectrum of different vehicles. Now as a programmer and with autonomous vehicles becoming more popular, I thought that it would be a great time to learn how to do it as well. There are a ton of brands of drones available to purchase these days, but I will be using a DJI Tello drone to demonstrate how to program one (https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/dji-ryze-tech-tello-quadcopter-drone-with-camera-white/12644588). They’re one of the cheaper drones a person can buy but still have a ton of features that we can experiment with so let’s get into it.

Downloading and Installing an IDE.

For my demonstration I’ll be using JetBrains PyCharm Professional. There is a free version available which will also work, it just comes with less features which won’t interfere with what were doing so this is can be done by anyone. This will work with any IDE that supports python development so if you have a preference you may use that.

Instructions:

1. Head to https://www.jetbrains.com/pycharm/

2. Download PyCharm Community Edition that is compatible with your PC.

3. Install PyCharm

Setting up your IDE

There are a few things we will have to do before we can continue into writing some code to make everything work, so at this point you will open your fresh install of PyCharm. This will prompt you with a menu where you can customize the IDE to your liking but none of this is necessary, so we wont. There is a button that allows you to create a new project so that’s what we will do. From the menu on the left select Pure Python (should be selected by default). Now we will name the project. By default, the project will be called pythonProject which you may change to anything you want. Next, we will set the environment. For this we will set it as Virtualenv. The location can just stay as it is as it will just be saved in the directory we are creating. Now we choose the base interpreter. You may not have python installed on your system so it will offer you to download the python programming language from this language. As of the time of writing this the version of python I’ll be using is 3.9 but you may choose an older version also as it will also work. If you are using windows 7 please note that 3.9 won’t run so you will need to install an earlier version. Make sure that you are installing python 3 and not python 2 as python 2 won’t support the libraries we will be using. Once all the settings are set (they should look like the picture below) we can create the project.

Alright now that we are in the IDE there is one last thing we need to do before we can start programming! We need to download a couple libraries that will make our life extremely easy when programming this drone which are djitellopy2 (used to connect and give instructions to the drone) and pygame (used to get keyboard input which we can map so you can give commands pushing keys on the keyboard). To do this on your menu bar at the top of the IDE go to File -> Settings or use the shortcut ctrl+alt+s. Now from this menu open the Project: <yourProjectName> tab and select Python Interpreter. From this menu you will be able to see all the libraries that your project is using. We need to add a couple libraries so to do this use the + button near the bottom of the screen. Now we can see all the available packages that can be downloaded for various projects. In the search bar search for djitellopy2 and install the package, then do the same for the pygame package. Now that both are installed your python interpreter page should look like the picture below.

You may have noticed that a couple other packages were installed as well. These packages are being used by the libraries we just installed so they automatically get installed as well. Now we are ready to start writing some code and making sure we can connect to the drone!

Connecting to the Drone

Connecting to the drone is extremely simple as it just uses a Wi-Fi connection. All you do is push the power button located on the side of the Tello drone and wait for about 10 seconds as it turns on. It will start flashing an orange light when its ready. Now go to your Wi-Fi settings and connect to the drone. You should see something like this:

Now that we are connected, we can start sending instructions to the drone! So, lets start writing up some code that will do that. You may want to turn the drone off at this point just to preserve the battery.

Coding Basic Commands

Now comes the fun part as you get to see just how easy that programming a drone can be! The first thing we are going to do is create a new python file in our IDE. To do this click on File -> New and select Python File from the dropdown list. Give it an appropriate name such as BasicMovements and hit enter. This is the file that we will use to give command to the drone for this step. The first thing we need to code is importing the package that we downloaded earlier (djitellopy). To do this we will type “from djitellopy import Tello”. This will allow our program to use the methods that are in the package as you will see in the upcoming lines. Now we need to define an object that will be the controller for the drone. For simplicity we will just define it as “drone”. Next you need to make our drone object defined as part of the Tello class we imported. We will write the code “drone = Tello()”. This now makes it so anytime we want to give a command to the drone it will use the object “drone” and use the methods provided to us in the Tello class. If you hold ctrl+click on the Tello() line in the IDE it will open the file so you can see all the available methods that we can use to give commands to our drone. The first command we need to give to our drone is connecting it to our program so we can start issuing commands. To do this we will use the method connect(). So, we type “drone.connect()” and now when we are connected to the drone on our WIFI network and run our program it will send data to the drone. Another line I like to add is checking the battery every time we run our program because there are certain commands that we can’t use when the battery drops below 50% for added safety such as doing flips. To do this we need to use the python’s built-in method print() and pass in the drones command get_battery() like this: “print(drone.get_battery())”. Now that we have setup all the basic things to connect to the drone lets write the first movement command! This needs to be the takeoff() method so the drone actually is flying before we start telling it to move. Now that the drone will be given the takeoff command we will make it move with the move() method. There are a few move() methods we can use in this case to make it move in certain directions. Choose one of these methods (move_up, move_down, move_left, move_right) and pass in the amount of centimeters you would like the drone to move. Once you have that command wrote we will get the drone to land so we can finally test the program and see if our drone is being issued these commands. To get the drone to land we use the method land (“drone.land()”). Your program should look something like the photo below.

Running our Program

To run our program, we will right click in our IDE and select the run option or in PyCharm you may use the shortcut ctrl+alt+F10. You will need to make sure that you have your drone turned on and connected to your computer through WIFI or else nothing will work, and an error will be thrown in our program.

So, did you get the drone to work? Can you see just how easy it is to send basic commands to the drone? Thanks to this library most of the work is already wrote and all we need to do is just call the actions. Now I will say that hardcoding values isn’t the easiest approach to controlling a drone so, I have also created a video that will explain how we can setup our code to take input from our keyboard using the other library we have installed called pygame. This will allow us to use any keys on our keyboard to give commands in real time to our drone. Thanks for reading and have a great day!

Programming A Drone With Python Continued...

So you’ve seen how to control a drone with hard coding and by using input from a keyboard. Very simple yet powerful things can be achieved! Yet, we haven’t explored the power of implementing one of the libraries that we have downloaded. That library is, drum roll please…….CV2!

What is CV2:

CV2 is what the library may be called but, it’s not the actual name of the project. The project we’re talking about is called OpenCV. OpenCV is a cross-platform library which we can use to develop real-time computer vision applications. The main focus is on image processing, video capture and analysis include features such as face detection, and object detection. I will be demonstrating the face detection part in my video but both can be implemented in very similar fashion. Oh and remember when I said it was cross-platform? That’s right you fellow programmers, even if you don’t know python that doesn’t mean you can’t use OpenCV in one of your projects as its available on most of the popular languages such as C++, Java, and Python. So as everyone reading this knows Java, it might be worth checking out if you ever want to implement A.I. driven detection in a future project of yours!

What can OpenCV accomplish?

You may not be aware of this but you likely use OpenCV every single day and your about to find out why you social media superstars. You know when you pull out your phone to get that fire photo for the ‘Gram and you have so many filters that you can apply? OpenCV is probably what they are using to control all those filters. These things include but are not limited to blurring everything in the background so the focus is only on you, changing the colors of the picture/video, changing the background of the photo/video so it looks like you’re chilling on the beach instead of stuck in your parent’s basement eating pizza pops and drinking a bottle of wine alone. That’s right, that’s OpenCV! So next time you’re on snapchat sending pictures of yourself looking like a dog sticking out your tongue you can say “Hey! That technology is driven by OpenCV!”.

How we’re using OpenCV:

So now that you have a grip on what OpenCV is, how will we be using it? As you know we are programming a drone, specifically the DJI Tello drone. This drone has a camera on the front of it which we will be able to use to find a face or object and then do whatever we want with that face/object. I’ll be demonstrating with face detection only but just note that you can detect all sorts of things that may be on the face such as eyes, nose, eyebrows, lips and so on. For my needs of demonstrating this I’ll just be finding the whole face and basically draw a rectangle around which than we can use to find the center of the face so the drone will always be focused exactly on the middle of the face. Then once the drone finds the face, it will move either forward or backward depending on the size of the rectangle so the person its capturing can move around and it will follow. This is a common feature built in to most drones now as its perfect for people who may blog as they can just walk down the street and the drone with stick with them with no need for someone to control it.

How is this achieved with the DJI Tello?

If I were to tell you that in under 100 lines of code, we could have everything up and working as intended? Well that’s the case here (thank you python cv2 library). So first of all we need to import all the necessary libraries that we will be using. These libraries if you don’t remember are numpy, cv2, and djitello2 as well as time for some minor sleep commands. Next is connecting the drone through creating the object and then issuing the command connect(). Starting to remember yet? Now we start issuing the commands to the drone. The first thing is to get the drone to take off. Now when a drone takes off it only goes about 3 feet in the air so we need it to increase by another 3 or so feet so were now at a height that an average person may be at so the drone can find a face and not a crotch! Next is where the code from our CV2 library comes in! We will capture the image stream coming in from the drone using the function streamon() from the djitello2 library. This allows us to take the image it captures and render it into something that we can use. The rest is pretty intricate so I won’t go to in depth in this written blog but check out the video blog to have a full overview of the code and see it in action!

Conclusion

Are you ready to see what the OpenCV project is capable of and how we can use it to command our drone to do some pretty cool things? This is just a small snippet of what can really be achieved. As I had mentioned, OpenCV is implemented in most camera/video applications for various reasons and as detection becomes even better, more things will be possible. They may be good, they may be bad but as a whole its always super interesting to see how these technologies work. What Is the Best Drone on the Market

Even if you have no good reason to justify buying one, you have to admit that drones are cool. Some are glorified tech toys, but most models we highlight here are fit for use in imaging and cinematic applications small and large. If you think you can use a flying camera in your next project, there's some good news—the tech has come a long way in a very short time. There are models on the market now that put earlier copters to shame in terms of video quality and stabilization.

And now the bad news. You get what you pay for, and if you want an aerial video platform that can capture stunning footage, you need to be ready to spend some cash. Because drones are such pricey propositions, it pays to do your research before buying one. We've tested many of the ready-to-fly models on the market to determine what's important to look for, and the best models available.

There are low-cost drones

on the market (we've rounded some of the top-rated options under $100 on Amazon), but you're still looking at spending a few hundred dollars to get a solid model that's stable in flight with an excellent integrated camera.

The drones we review are ready-to-fly models, so you can use them right out of the box. In most cases, you'll need to bring your own Android or iOS device to view the camera feed in real-time, but we've reviewed a few models that stream video directly to a remote control. We don't cover racing, industrial, or agricultural aircraft here—our focus is on aircraft intended for aerial imaging and videography.

The Best Drone Deals This Week*

Regulations and Safety The rules of the air vary from region to region—we've covered what to know for US and UK pilots. But, typically, if your drone weighs 8.8 ounces (250g) and up, you'll need to register it in order to fly it outdoors legally—even over your own property.

There is one mass market exception, avoids the need for registration in the US and UK, and opens it up to (legal) operation in other regions.

It skips a safety feature—obstacle avoidance—to make weight, though. But it includes all of the other expected tools to help ensure a safe flight, including GPS stabilization, automated return-to-home, and automatic takeoff and landing.

Almost all of the models featured here have some safety features. Even the DJI Spark, which isn't built for long-distance flight, includes a GPS and automatic return-to-home functionality. If your control signal is interrupted, or if the battery gets down too low (most drones can only fly for about 25 minutes on a single battery charge), you drone will start to head back to its takeoff point and land.

Parrot drone and remote Flyaways still happen, and there are horror stories on various web discussion forums. Of course, negative experiences are amplified in this context, simply because uneventful flights that don't result in a crash or missing drone aren't hot topics for discussion.

If you're flying within the United States, you need to take heed of FAA guidelines—or be prepared to face potential fines or jail time. There are no-fly zones set by the FAA, so don't take off if you're near an airport without notifying the control tower first. And, even if you're out in the middle of nowhere, don't take your drone above 400 feet. Most are set to obey these regulations out of the box, but controlling a quad copter is just like driving a car—even if you missed seeing that speed limit sign, you're still liable to pay the ticket.

Racing and Toy Drones There are a number of products on the market that are sold as drones, but don't quite fit the bill. Remote-controlled aircraft have been around for ages. (Check out this clip from Magnum, P.I. if you don't believe me, or just want to see Tom Sellers in a bathrobe.) But with the recent surge in popularity, quadcopters that would simply be sold as RC products are now being tagged as drones. These don't include GPS stabilization, return-to-home functionality, and other automated flight modes that make a drone a drone. We also don't review many of them.

Of course, not every small drone is a top flyer. Some are barely capable of getting off the ground and require you to use your smartphone as a remote control, which makes for a sloppy control experience.

There are some standouts in the class. The DJI Mavic Air 2 and Mavic 2 Pro offer as much power and imaging prowess as you can find in an older Phantom model, but in a much smaller package. Size doesn't compromise their performance in any way. It's not just DJI, either. The Parrot Anafi is svelte, charges via USB-C, and supports 4K HDR video.

And there are models that come with some caveats. The DJI Mavic Mini is so light that you don't have to pay a FAA registration fee to fly it, and its video and images are of strong quality. But it showed issues with connectivity and wind resistance in test flights, and doesn't offer any sort of obstacle detection.

The Rye Tello isn't a good drone for radiographers, but Scratch programming support makes it an appealing first drone for teens learning to code. The DJI Spark is another one that makes compromises for its size, but remains a good choice for low altitude, short distance flights and aerial selfies.

The Best Drones for Pros The DJI Inspire 2 is aimed at professional cinematographers, news organizations, and independent filmmakers. And it's priced as such—its MSRP doesn't include a camera. You have the option of adding a 1-inch sensor fixed-lens camera, a Micro Four Thirds interchangeable lens model, or a Supermom cinema mount with its own proprietary lens system and support for 6 video capture.

The Mavic Pro 2 also has some serious appeal for pilots who make a living from aerial video and imaging. Its camera sports a 1-inch class sensor for higher quality photos, and it can record 4K footage with a wide or standard angle of view. It's a lot smaller than the Inspire too, appealing for independent creatives working without the support of a full film crew.
