also i know people dont really talk about ashitaka much but seeing the film again i was struck by how well written he is, and how fun he is as a character who is told that he has a few months at best to live and spends the entire rest of the film doing good recklessly. why not throw himself headlong into every problem and situation, why not take massive risks, why not do everything he can to help and make things better? what are they gonna do, kill him again?

#also as iconic as the 'you're beautiful' moment is #i think the peak moment for him and his relationship with san #is when she's completely breaking down near the end and stabs him with his sisters crystal dagger that he gave her #and he just takes it. barely flinches. pulls her into a hug and says 'im sorry. i tried to stop it.' #that moment rewired my young brain chemistry the first time i saw it #its why im always a sucker for cooldown hug moments like that
