It’s ironic because le Carré is (justly imo) frequently taken to task for phoning in his female characters, and yet paradoxically I actually think several of his most compelling characters are women

#in general i think he is extremely good at quick and confident thumbnail sketches #and that those sketches can stray toward caricature (very sharp and blackly funny caricature which is a skill in itself! #but at worst it can be a bit glib and I am more consistently impressed by him capturing people *quickly* than *thoroughly*) #that said i think the dudes overall are noticeably better drawn BUT paradoxically some of his *best* character work is on the rare 3D ladie #s. anyway i don’t really have a point i was just musing about this #john le carré #spies #lit tag #on writing #my posts
