Years back when I was into Ace Attorney the first time, I made an OC like, fancast of my own defense attorney, rival, assistant, etc… but I never wrote anything down about them and lost my sketches, so all I remember now is the prosecutor who I had ended up being more invested in anyway. Now I’m like… working backwards and making a new main character to work with the rival.

Courting in mer customs

In Mer society mermaids or mermen are typically very touch affectionate. Not all mers have mouths like humans. Since their bodies are made for aquatic life they are fish like in appearance and aren’t all human looking.

Normalized gestures for friends and family,

A mer is very social so a friendly gesture would be to bomp heads playfully while a nuzzle with purring is more considered romantic or one trying to comfort another with physical need. If your upset nuzzles cheer any mer up.

Tail twinning is a mer thing where you twirl your tails together chest to chest and look into each other’s eyes. This can be intimate but usually it’s done amongst friends or mothers and their young. If it’s done with friends expect a lot of giggling or play tugging with the tails as a joke.

Another common sign of friendship​ or playfulness is scale preening. This can be romantic but most of the time it’s pups cleaning their friends scales or teens messing around. Preening is how mers show care to each other and is often a pod practice. Clean shining scales is a part of being a mer.

Old fashioned courting,

Old fashioned courting includes asking the pods leader for the mers hand and on a full moon you go away from the pod to bond. Leading up to this the whole month is spent giving gifts to show love and understanding of the partners needs. Sex and mating isn’t until later in the relationship, this is just to see if you’d be a good match or if you could stand being alone together as a couple.

This is a test made to strengthen the relationship you share and show that the mer courting you was strong enough or smart enough to protect you and your possible future pups if something happened. It’s a sweet process full of love and playful romance playing under the full moon all night and falling asleep in the arms of someone you love, giving you both an idea if the one you chose is the one. Boy or girl can initiate courting. Everything is consensual you can say no to the advances.

Traditional,

Traditional is more modern but not quit they're still experimenting in romantic and sweet gestures with courting but not being as old fashioned as some pods. The mer courting sings songs as well as give gifts to show their love and compassion to the partner. This courting method also shows they’ll put time and devotion into this relationship giving you all the love you need. It’s still taken seriously but it’s not as deep as leaving the pod for a night to be with your possible mate.

New

New styles of flirting or courting have human things mixed into them.

No more mer mating calls, with a human partner anyways. Some sound nice others have your chosen mate on the ground crying because what’s going on???

Gifts are still very common. But both parties usually gifting things to the other. Sea shells or pretty sea glass. Smooth stones or delicious fish. Things that are hard to get or mean something are important in this courting.

New age age also means everyone is different. No one has to follow guide lines or rules, the process is about showing your love, bonding, and explaining how much their love means to you.

All of them are sweet and all pods have different traditions based on these ones but they all share one thing. Love.
