DAY FOUR: 25 SEP, BANGKOK, DRIZZLY
did more shopping around Siam Square
took pics at a photobooth
tried pad thai and a cheesecake shaped like cheese
climbed to the top floor terrace of ICONSIAM for a ✨view✨
visited ASIATIQUE
indulged in the biggest seafood feast
MISSION CLEARED!
NOW CALCULATING REWARDS...
finally!!! it’s the last post of my bangkok adventures!!! ◉‿◉
tbh the last day wasn’t too exciting in terms of activities bc it was just mainly shopping and eating?? and ticking more stuff off our itinerary that we missed the previous days
Tumblr media
we decided to forgo the free hotel breakfast and head to a cafe (Cassette Coffee Bar at Siam Square) instead for a light breakfast
i think we came quite early bc there was no one else at the cafe so we had the whole place to ourselves for picsss yey
the inside of the cafe resembled a cross between a bar and a hotel lobby?? with the retro decor, all-pink interior, and dim warm lighting
the whole place was just giving ✨aesthetic✨ vibes
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i ordered the iced yuzu honey lemon and it was a very refreshing drink~ just a little bit tart the way i like it
tried a bite of the thai tea cake (recommended!! fragrant and not too sweet) and brownie (basic but nice)
Tumblr media
SPOTTED A FAKE LIFT
Tumblr media
this was my attempt at taking a srs ootd pic
Tumblr media
a rotating door!! so cool
Tumblr media
after our breakfast we walked around the area and did more shopping~~~ it started drizzling yikes
there was a long stretch of clothing stalls and i bought a black floral midi skirt from one of the stalls
bc it was raining a little and i was afraid that the maxi skirt i was wearing would become a victim to dirty puddles, i changed into the black skirt that i just bought lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media
we went into the mall to escape from the rain and found the GENTLEWOMAN store!! O:
most of the clothing pieces were not rly my style bUT a colourful, pastel-y top and a pair of light brown shorts with a smol embroidered flower caught my eye and i just had to try them on as a set
i was right!! it was definitely a cute fit ✨
unfortunately for my broke ass (with no youtrip card on hand too) i decided to only go with the top bc the shorts were the same price as the top but it was more basic-looking?? thought that maybe i could find something similar online or something
− 67SGD 💸💸💸
Tumblr media
じゃーん ✩
even though the paper bag i got wasn’t the iconic black and white version i’m still keeping it for memoriessss
Tumblr media
went to a bbt place to chill for a bit and found this trapped rock... looked like a museum exhibit or something but it’s actually a chair
Tumblr media
a shoe shop named shu lmaoo if i had moneys i would get something from there for the memes (ok but the shoes were actually quite nice and trendy)
Tumblr media
checked out peylaa which sold a bunch of random items at an inexpensive price (a bit like miniso)
got my mini wooden fork from there~
Tumblr media Tumblr media
we also took pics at a photobooth!! it was super cheap?? but it was so chaotic and only the first pic turned out ok
there was only a five second counter between the shots and we didn’t have enough time to prepare for the subsequent pics bc we thought that we could control when to take the photos?? rip
anyway the machine also gave us a link to the animated version O: what is this new technology i love it HAHAHAH you can see us struggling to fit in the frame
Tumblr media
did you know that there’s mos burg in bangkok??
Tumblr media
we found a mos burg but we didn’t go inside ))-: i wonder if they have thai exclusive food
Tumblr media
finally got to check out DADDY AND THE MUSCLE ACADEMY (gotta love that name)
it’s also a prop shop (by my definition) and this time i actually took pics of the inside so i can share the experience~~~
how should i describe the aesthetics?? hmmm colourful pastels and y2k vibes
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
gahh the cute stickers and postcards were relatively inexpensive and i was tempted but i didn’t rly want to just spend money for the heck of it y’know
there was a Extra Salty Peanut plush pass case (it was very cute and i thought of anya heheh) that i also had to forgo bc didn’t have enough cash on me ))-:
so i left empty-handed...... my eyes ate well tho
found a cake shop that sold a cheesecake that was shaped like a holey cheese and i just had to get one for chi (and it was only like 1SGD?? cheap)
Tumblr media
rin2 and shoron picked out some mini cakes and i had tried one!! i think it was hazelnut?? not bad i like the smol size~ it’s very easy to eat and not too filling
Tumblr media
our next destination was ICONSIAM!! one of bangkok’s megamalls with a food hall that was set up to look like an indoor floating night market
we were gonna grab our lunch there~
took a cab over and this pic is proof that four of us could fit in the backseat of a regular taxi (it was nOT COMFORTABLE tho)
Tumblr media
man the food hall was cool and rly huge
there were so many stalls selling food, drinks and trinkets, and i was so afraid i’d get lost so i went around with shoron
this was also where i got the food miniatures for chi!! i think i spent a very long time at that particular stall lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
shoron and i both got pad thai from one of the stalls~ it was something that i’d never had before and wanted to try?? i got the squid one and didn’t add any spice
the squid looked suspiciously raw even though i saw the chef stir fry it with everything else in front of my eyes...
the taste is not bad but a little on the sweeter side?? i expected it to be more savoury hmmm
actually pad thai tastes kinda like the filling of a popiah lol am i the only one who thinks that??
tried a bit of the mango sticky rice that someone else got and it was yummy!! super sweet (even the rice is sweet??) but it’s a dessert so it’s fine
Tumblr media
been walking around with a cheesecake on me for quite some time and i don’t think it would survive the journey back to the hotel so i decided to eat it right after my meal
bOI IT LOOKED SO DARN CUTE BUT IT TASTED WEIRD it was by far the worst cheesecake i’ve ever eaten but it is also the cutest cheesecake i’ve ever seen?????
the texture was like jello and inside there was this orange cheese goo... that tasted kinda salty?? idk
it was extra gross bc it was room temp LOL that’s on me tho not the cake’s fault
would i buy it again??? prob not unless chi wants it for his bday or something (pls don’t make ownar eat this again)
Tumblr media
after lunch we explored the mall a little bit (mainly just checked out the supermarket lol)
then we went up to the terrace on the top floor to get a view of bangkok’s skyline~
Tumblr media
there was an indoor waterwall!! nothing compared to jewel’s indoor waterfall but this one has LED lights spelling out “ICONSIAM” every few mins
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
view from the terrace overlooking the city!! tea coloured river water hmmm
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
idk if you can spot the ferris wheel in the distance (hint: look between the white building and the dark grey one) but it was where we were headed to next
Tumblr media
our last stop was ASIATIQUE
and ngl it was disappointing :// all the shops at the supposed open-air market were closed (prob due to covid idk)
Tumblr media
there was a functional ferris wheel tho looked cool with the lights and all but i think the ride was kinda overpriced?? so we didn’t go on
Tumblr media
and a haunted house ride and a beautiful carousel too
but aside from those ride attractions there rly wasn’t anything else for us
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
honestly the convenience store that was a short walk away was prob more interesting than ASIATIQUE imo i rly wouldn’t recommend it unless you wanna check out the bars and restaurants (we were not interested in those unfortunately)
when we returned to the hotel, we pooled our leftover moneys and ordered in our biggest seafood feast!! perf way to end the trip
Tumblr media
even chi and cha were enjoying a feast of their own heheh
Tumblr media
i didn’t rly have trouble packing for the return trip bc i didn’t bring much and i didn’t buy an entire store and luwi had space in her luggage for me to yeet my things in (my stuff didn’t even take up half of her luggage lol)
then it was snooooze time
.
.
.
our flight back to sg was the next day (26 sep) at 10:50 am iirc so we had to reach the airport at least two hours earlier which meant that we would have to give the hotel breakfast buffet a miss bc it only starts at 7:30 am and the transport that the hotel arranged was coming to pick us up at 7:40 am
i ate the crab and tuna sandwich that i got from 7-11 and also drank a packet of choco soymilk
it was once again another rainy morning~~~ good thing we didn’t have to take the public transport
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the ride was a lot smoother than i had expected (no jams or anything) and we reached the airport earlier than anticipated
Tumblr media Tumblr media
when we landed in sg and cleared all the customs and collected our stuff from the baggage area, it was already around 3 pm?? and we hadn’t eaten a full meal since the night before so we were starvingggg
gUESS WHAT WE ATE LMAO
YES IT WAS MOS BURG °˖✧◝(⁰▿⁰)◜✧˖° heheh
after that alfur, shoron and rin2 (luwi left right after eating) followed me to the pokecen bc i absolutely have to check the place out every time i’m at jewel
aside from the halloween stuff there wasn’t anything much so i grabbed a pumpkaboo and then we all left to go home
i shared a cab back with alfur and omg we got lost trying to find the taxi stands (one driver even cancelled on us bc we weren’t there when he arrived rip)
when i got home i ate my orange bread snack that i got from lawsons in bangkok and then crashed shortly after that zzz
.
.
.
overall a very fun and satisfying trip!! ╰(⸝⸝⸝´꒳`⸝⸝⸝)╯ managed to fulfil both of my priorities which were shopping and sheep farm HAHAHAH
if there was a chance that we could get later flights then i’d prefer those even if it meant that we’d be wasting like half a day or something
but if not then i’d rather just take the midnight cab to the airport next time bc the waiting was painfulllll oof
and a later return flight would be good too!! we could check out later and have a last meal nearby or do some last-minute shopping or something... it was kinda sad having to miss breakfast just to catch our flight back home

i was supposed to write more today but i spent most of that time trying to research mall rat culture (80s-early 2000s) that bmc worships
i posit to you, the reader, that “be more chill” is not intended to portray the tiktok generation. it does not take place in the 90s or early 2000s. it takes place in a quasi-timeline.
every set piece in be more chill is a loud and proud liminal space--bathrooms, malls, high school, places defined by their in-betweenness. it claims to have a sense of time, a knowledge of pop culture.
A sixteen year old is intimately familiar with the works of Joe Pesche (an actor active 1981-1999) and considers Robert De Niro (now age 77) a sex symbol. He idolizes Keanu Reeves (most popular 1989-1999 until his mid-2019 comeback after the musical was written).
The same teen considers tape cassettes (common until the early 90′s) to be “vintage” and roller skates (whose popularity peaked around 2000) to be “retro.”
The Japanese technology boom (whose decade-long hold over the market seems to have waned around 2002) is still a source of wonder and fascination to an average high schooler.
At the same time, smartphone use and emojis (which grew popular in 2013/2014 until the present) run rampant. Teenagers embrace Twitter (popularized by 2008) but no other social media, communicating solely by text and tweet and telephone call. The only porn available to one teenager is on cable TV while another teen finds porn online, but must wait for their slow (possibly dial-up) connection to load. Teenagers’ music choices consist of Whitney Houston (1987) for the cool kids and Bob Marley (passed away 1981) for the retro kids, although cool teens may also listen to Eminem (who seems slightly outdated, but recent enough for a 16-year-old to remember being popular) but reference his “anti-women” controversy beginning in 2000 and his “super old” age (he is 48 years old now).
The “classic literature AND ZOMBIES” trend from 2009 until its flop in 2016 is current and a viable marketing strategy.
Sodas discontinued in the 90s are sought-after collector’s items, sold at Spencer’s Gifts (a name that was discontinued for the store in 2003).
The most current video game system is the first generation XBox (2001-2005).
A teenager dresses as “Prince” (active by that name 1975-1991 and from 2000-2016) in their outfit from 1984.
And quantum supercomputers are predicted to be viable technology by 2030 if we’re lucky.
Some of these dates are arguable, but in general, with this information, the musical takes place around 1999, 1978 or so, 2020, 2000, 2015, 2008, 2005, 1988, 1981, 2001, 2010, 2003, 2004, 1985, and 2035.
All at the same time.

To no one’s surprise, Kim Kibum is high.
No! Not that kind of high--Kibum may be an advocate for living on the edge, but jail was, well, a little much-- but the legal kind of high. Doped up on caffeine and last night’s escapades; slurping his weight in caffeine in hopes of staying lucid enough to remember the choreo to their retro hit, the lyrics, his name, and as of present- to answer the interviewers questions with much vigor. Caffeine has always been his primary lover during the skip of schedules, but as of late Kibum and his beaus relationship had become rather toxic--Romeo and Juliet toxic. He couldn’t mull through the day without 3 square meals catered around an Americano and yea- it’s unhealthy, but the results were really really good. And so far, he’s proud of himself for every broadcast had been spot on and every interview fluid enough to create more buzz than his self administered half-hawk during Lucifer era. What a time to be alive!
The clock ticks to the tune of the incoming  hour--9AM-- and quite frankly Kibum feels like he’s going to die. Lethargy riddled feline eyes, curling svelte finger tips loose around the girth of a Styrofoam cup--Styrofoam, despite having ordered an iced Americanofor kicks--it’s half empty when he so desperately needed it to be half full. Fingers are wrapping tentatively around the girth of  a Styrofoam cup, contents half empty when he needed it to be half full. His manager seems to read his mind, read between the lines of thin,  lowered, apprehensive eyes that say Kibum won’t make it to the hour without a refill of the legal drug, because he’s swift in getting the idol a refill before the interviewer arrives.
The first question is light -- is easy. Interviews are easy. Easy as pie.
Maybe because the art of conversation was something he had mastered a long time ago, but only now able to showcase to a large audience via this comeback allotting him with a rather surplus of solo interviews-more than he expected, honestly. His members (take away Taemin, add OnJongHo) were just as good as he when it came to answering questions. Each member cool calm and concise, so much so that Kibum could easily blend into the unmarked cafe’s puke-colored interior(really.
“Because SHINee is a contemporary band, we strive to create new trends and rework old ones.”  The word ‘contemporary’ is emphasized, a quality of the quintet that Kibum equally loved to drive home and be apart of.
“In addition, our concept this comeback is a ‘retro’ pop song with new jack swing elements where we reinterpret specific elements of that era, but in a very SHINee way. And while many other artist have pursued a ‘retro’ concept  spanning from the 80s to late 90s, we wanted to do so in a new and distinct characteristics. Hence why we released a limited edition cassette version and filmed the MV in a way that’s the very embodiment of the era down to the editing.” His fondness of his group shones through a show of pearly whites, the kind he’s oh-so conscious of because the back of his hand presses to it before allowing him to continue. “As SHINee, we’ve always strive to fully incorporate details within our concept. For example, many may not notice, but  the jewelry we wore are actual relics from the 90s. I even utilized some of my own wardrobe during shooting. When we chose the concept, we met with our staff numerous time to decide if ‘1of1′ was a concept we should try. Although we ultimately chose it, we knew how dangerous this choice was, so we are really happy to see everyone enjoying it so much.”
These days he feels very much like SHINee’s PR person. Ever since the word got out that he played a hand in their last concert’s direction and costumes, interviewers always approached him about SHINee with much more interest- as if he were... vital to SHINee’s conception. In an afterthought, he adds, “In the future I want to create fun music that is public friendly but unique as well.”
And then modesty takes hold of his features, embedded so deep within his countenance that not even the humbled smile that’s stretched around his teeth can hide it. This was... different. Sure he had just concisely outlined the quintet’s mission and concept- but he had done so as 5, speaking for all 5 of them, not just himself. Speaking for his group was autonomous by now but speaking on his solo activities and achievements (ones that were miles different from SHINee ones), though, were a different story; he was still getting use to it. A fairy tale as Kibum was but an oyster revealing his pearl to the public and hoping not to get it stolen.
“In Drinking Solo, I play a  charismatic character named ‘Kim Kibum’ just like me! Anyways, he’s a 9th grade civil servant examinee who takes life one step at a time. He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth so obviously he prefers the finer things in life--finer things like his penchant for luxury tracksuits that he finances with his mother’s credit card.Thinks a noyangjin Paris Hilton.” The interviewer must have been thinking ‘that sounds just like you’, but she doesn’t interject, instead lets him finish- something Kibum appreciates.
“From the beginning I wanted to make the character I portray as realistic as possible. When I began acting in musicals I learned that embodying the character in a convincing way is just as important as portraying that character. I think the more realistic a character is, the more relate able they will be. And that’s what I want to show- a relate able character that reminds viewers of someone around them.” Ironic he says so, since the character was written with himself in mind. Ironic that he could get away with portraying himself--because the character is him after all-- he goes the extra mile to let fictional Kim Kibum live.
“ An example of me embodying my character is cutting my bangs into choppy layers, this makes Drinking Solo’s Kim Kibum memorable and also gives off the feeling that although he thinks he’s trendy--others don’t agree. On  a side note, many of my friends teased at this choppy bangs style, so I think it worked? On top of that, the writer wanted to drive home how ‘trendy’ he was and wanted me to act the part by wearing a Gucci tracksuit. But that’s unrealistic, right? A truly fashionable person wouldn’t just change outfits regardless of the situation just because they can, they might wear several Adidas tracksuits instead.” He would know. He’s a truly fashionable person, right?
“Drinking Solo’s Kim Kibum wasn’t originally suppose to speak with satoori at first, but I really really wanted to be able to act in this accent  because I felt that it fit the character, I couldn’t see him not speaking satoori. So when I went to script reading I provided two versions of my lines, one in standard accent and the other with satoori. Luckily, the writer thoroughly enjoyed my alternate script and had me translate the others.” The thought has him beaming, more so because his screen debut had been heavily praised, a feat that didn’t accompany most idol turned actor until their fifth year if ever. And ontop of that- he debuted with a character inspired by himself and was able to tweak his speaking pattern.
“Um. I, uh. Can’t say much about our other similarities without ruing future episodes, but aside from speaking in satoori and being close to our late Grandmothers...”  A pause. Not awkward. But not comfortable either. Feline eyes are suddenly fluttering to the pen she uses to scribble down pieces of his winded answer. He silently wonders if she’s new, because she hardly ever seeks eye contact with him, shys away from it even.
“I feel as if he and I are more alike when I’m not working- in that I’m rather impulsive and do things without thinking. The script writer actually wrote him with me in mind, ha!” Her nod is expected and it comes as a gracefully bob of the head as if to say ‘I can tell’ and while he’s grateful for having a script writer think of him (can you believe it?) when crafting up a character, the drama hasn’t ended. The drama hadn’t shown fictional Kim Kibum’s inner layers, hadn’t show him vulnerable in his entirety. She has the wrong impression of him. Everyone does. And he forgives it. “There’s so much more that  ‘Drinking Solo’s’ Kibum has to show so please anticipate him!”

Utility Tapes announce release of soundtrack to abandoned video game by teevee.
Soundtrack to Expedition is the soundtrack to a video game that was never released - a small, musical memento of a project undertaken by Red Fox Game Studio and teevee. (indie musician Dylan Hyman). Expedition would have seen the player source materials and craft items in order to defend yourself and survive a harsh space environment. The game reached the advanced stages of development but was eventually shelved to pursue other projects survived only by the (already complete) soundtrack. Utility Tapes is working together with Red Fox Game Studio and teevee. to make public this compelling soundtrack and story. The soundtrack itself is a collection of lush pieces that take the listener on a journey through various landscapes and moods. Drawing from ambient music, harsh noise and lofi hip-hop, Dylan expertly captures an other-worldly vibe with hints of retro-futurism in his sound selection. A few tracks deep into the 6 track cassette, the piano and cascading analog synths of “Travel” give way to oppressive noise pads and haunting, distant synthesis. Standout track “Main Menu” brings things towards their resolution with melodic piano and synth lines and the final track (“Inventory”) reprises the slow swing of the opener “Shop” to lead out. Composer Dylan Hyman said of the soundtrack: "While these pieces were designed as backdrops for the player's active in game experience, I wanted to make them somewhat independent and able to stand on their own as music. Anybody who has access to the soundtrack should get a sense of what the game was to offer in terms of genre, setting, and mood. You were originally planned to be alone, set to colonize the desolate planet Mars. Some of the more harsh noise/drone tracks I have on the release represent the barren wasteland in which you would have had to survive. But there has to be some balance to that and the melodic/ethereal tracks on the release relay a sense of hope to the player and drives them to continue pushing forward. I hope that this release archives the game in the physical world as it never had a real, tangible presence." Soundtrack to Expedition is available from Utility Tapes on May 8th 2020 via Big Cartel and all streaming platforms. Stream the track "Shop" on Soundcloud now by clicking here Read the full article

mixtape. sprinkles. vanilla ice cream.
Most of the time life is dull and boring. It is mundane. But still, there are some things that serve as colorful, sweet sprinkles to my generic vanilla ice cream life. This week feels like a roller coaster that barely changes directions. A collective of scenes with high chances of not being included to the final cut of a movie about my life because the producers will think that it is bland and boring. But nevertheless there are still exceptions that made my last seven days pretty darn good. My favorite activity that we did in school this week is the pseudo-newspaper making in Creative Non-fiction. I love writing (although writing doesn't love me back), especially for a news paper. I've been in the campus journalism scene for more than five years now and this kind of activity is just the right thing that I need to freshen my rusting skills. I wrote an article about the conference that happened before the said activity and I landed at the top three. Not bad. This just means that I still have a a journalist's spirit in me. Another thing that also added spark to my week is of course, as always, my girlfriend Christine. We celebrated her birthday last friday, January 13, although it is not the real day of her birthday. It is a simple type of celebration. Just me and her and a cake and a large bowl of fries and two tall sized milk tea. We talked for more than 3 hours and had a hard time on finishing all the foods. The combination of potatoes, milk tea and cake is a big time appetite pleaser that'll make you feel more than satisfied. She thought that I didn't bought anything for her because I already gave her the book that she wants last December, but she's wrong. I'm a man full of surprises, though it's quite predictable that I have something for her that day because one of our friends nearly spoiled my secret. I want something that she will not expect so I made a MIXTAPE. The old school romantic gift that never ages and has passed generations of love birds. The mixtape that I made is composed of 25 tracks ranging from artists like Reese Lansangan, Snow Patrol, and Copeland to more upbeat acts such as The Postal Service, The Lonely Island, and We Are Scientists. The mixtape's title is in Russian (because French is overrated for love related stuff) and it is stored in a flash drive instead of the more retro CD and cassette tape. Along with this mixtape is a short letter and a portrait of Christine made by my friend, Paul Antonio. The smile on her face when she saw the mixtape and the portrait is priceless. I almost forgot that I skipped lunch for three days just to buy a flash drive and to pay my friend for the portrait. Despite the hot weather and heavy traffic, that day is perfect. She made it perfect. Seeing her smile is beyond perfect. Knowing that I made her happy makes me feel grand. Again, life is dull and boring but only if you will leave it that way. Choice the right people to stick to, spend on moments instead of gadgets, and of course stay in school and maybe, just maybe, your tomorrows will be happier than your yesterdays.
