irt billystorm its like, the way i interpret it from an actual narrative sense is him saying it the way a dad tells his kids that if theres a monster in their closet then he’ll beat it up. like the kids going “what if it floods again :(“ and hes like “well then you can come move in with me :)” as both like well this will make them feel safer but also if safety is a concern then we really can do that! after all, leafstar is fine with clan cats being kittypets too! and then leafstar made it weird by deciding to fully enter her permanent xenophobia arc and be a gigantic dick about it.

honestly my ideal version of that situation that would preserve drama without making leafstar out to be a complete asshole who is portrayed as in the right for being xenophobic (what the hell, erins) is billystorm staying the same as in canon, telling the kits that if safety is a concern they can just move in with him to reassure them. in the back of his mind hes like ‘if it does keep bothering me ill bring it up to leafstar to actually seriously discuss it’. the kids, being kids, mention it while playing, and leafstar flips out.

but. its because of her lingering issues with clan stability and her own security as leader. shes still very much in the wrong. billystorm is just being a dad, reassuring and looking out for his kids, and leafstar is taking out her insecurities about how much control she has over the current clan situation out on him. she still calls him by his clan name and doesnt snub him for being a kittypet though- instead she says hes undermining her and trying to make her look like she cant protect her kits in front of the clan.

for a resolution, she has to apologize to him. he didnt do anything, and she saw treachery where there was none. they end things as a couple, and she brings the kits to billystorms twolegs to take care of. she visits to see them, but she and billystorm keep conversations between them short and polite. billystorm needs to recover from the unjustified tongue lashing she gave him, and leafstar really needs to think about how she handled that and hurt him and jumped to wild conclusions. they dont become mates again, but after a second, more thought out and heartfelt apology from leafstar, they do at least become friends, and are able to get along and raise the kits as divorced but at least friendly cats.

as for the kits, one becomes a permanent clan cat (residing in camp), one becomes a daylight warrior, and one becomes a permanent kittypet (no clan association). they meet up at billystorms house to keep up.

thinking about this because of @blimbo-buddy divorce art. leafbilly divorce should be canon forever and always i dont find them very compatible even without leafstar making things gross.
