Match Review: Manchester United U21s 4-2 Norwich City U21s

What's the Mather with you?

Sam Mather, pictured above, led United to glory at home to Norwich as the youngster bagged all four goals to give United a deserved three points.

Mather converted a lofted cross from Scanlon near the back post to get things started, before adding a second with a beautiful free kick from 30 yards out - nestled into the top right corner.

Scanlon played assist maker again, cutting in and shooting in a manner Antony could only dream of, before Mather poked home the rebound to secure his hat-trick.

Norwich ended the half with something of a consolation goal, finding success down United's right flank and managing to get the ball in to striker Ken Aboh's feet before he hit hard and low past Mee.

The second half was a more resigned, stagnant affair with both sides dropping intensity, but the game woke back up with Mather's fourth; a lovely pass across the box to the unmarked forward. Mather brought it forward back towards the Norwich defence before curling his shot off the inside right post to make it 4-1.

A mix-up between keeper Mee and player/coach Tom Huddlestone led to a goalmouth scramble and a 2nd goal for Norwich, knocked in by Aidan Manning, but that fluke was the last flashpoint of the half as the game fell back into the same early half rhythms and finished 4-2.

In what was a very even game based on possession, shots, fouls, passing accuracy, United came out on top and are now 10th in the U21 league. United have 17 points now and a +12 goal difference, leaping Norwich City, Chelsea and Sunderland each by just one point.

Match Review: Manchester United U21s 3-2 Newcastle United U21s

A win at Carrington for Travis Binnion's boys to round out the year. Not bad at all.

James Nolan opened the scoring early for United, but Newcastle almost immediately equalised with a well worked switch from left mid to right wing and back across.

Winger Mateo Mejia was brought down in the middle of the first half bang in the middle of the Newcastle box. Up stepped Joe Hugill to put United back in front.

Sam Mather's excellent free kick hit the bar just before half time, but United looked good as the half ended. This, inevitably, didn't translate to after half time and Newcastle managed to equalise yet again.

More magic from Mejia saw United keep fighting and eventually a break opened up down the right wing, with the wide man holding off the Newcastle LB, riding the tackle into the box, and squaring the ball to a primed Shola Shoretire who curled in a nice finish to secure the three points for the Red Devils.

Match Review: Salford City 4-3 Manchester United U21s

A goal fest at the Peninsula Stadium (it's Moor Lane lads, give over) as neighbours Salford and Manchester United enjoyed a ding dong evening in the Football League Trophy.

Shola Shoretire opened the scoring in the 7th minute, in what was a tight game between the two sides; near identical shot accuracy, possession, and passing accuracy. McAleny and Lund pulled goals back, and Salford went in at half-time 2-1 to the good.

In the second half United came into the tie more; Omari Forson bagged an equaliser inside the box straight after the restart, before Shoretire got his 2nd goal a few minutes later.

United looked like they would hold on to the lead until the 86th minute when a right-wing cross hit Ethan Ennis on the arm to give Salford City a penalty - which Matty Lund dispatched coolly to even the score up late in the game.

Disaster struck in the final minute of the match when Junior Luamba went down from a shove in the back by Rhys Bennett, which let veteran midfielder Matty Lund score his 2nd from the spot and secure a rare hat-trick; condemning United to a cruel defeat after a very promising second half.

United's defeat makes it no wins from three games and just one point, in a group that also featured Bolton Wanderers and Stockport County. Last place in the group is disappointing but against full men's teams it's more about the experience for the youth than the accolades, so it's a good education for the young Red Devils as they strive to copy Kobbie Mainoo's ascent into the first team squad.

Erik Ten Hag will no doubt be pleased with Mainoo's return and quest for fitness, with the youngster bagging two assists and generally looking incredibly comfortable in the middle; riding out rough challenges and nimbly dancing past the press. Given how lethargic United's first XI midfield is looking at present, a return to Premier League action away at Fulham at the weekend could be on the cards, and could be the spark that ignites United's season.

Match Review: Fulham U21s 1-1 Manchester United U21s

A tough game for United's youth prospects away at Fulham's training ground, Motspur Park.

A 22nd minute goal from Fulham's Imani Lanquedoc, gave the hosts a deserved lead, having missed a great chance a few minutes earlier. The attacker, typically a CAM, played wide right for Fulham and was part of a very energetic high press that kept United under pressure.

2nd half sub Ethan Ennis looked like he hadn't missed a beat out injured for United and the game brightened up for the Red Devils, with both sides now battling end-to-end, rather than Travis Binnion's lads just riding out the storm.

Ethan Williams hit a cute shot in the final minute of stoppage time, tidily tucked in the bottom left corner and snatching a draw for United - testament to the improvements the side made and the resolute defending in the face of a dangerous home side.

Behind Closed Doors: Manchester United 3-0 Barnsley

Another secret friendly with Barnsley, and this time Kobbie Mainoo WAS ready to play. Better still, Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic said the young starlet 'looked sharp' - promising news for Erik Ten Hag.

Kobbie Mainoo continued his return from pre-season injury and took part in the game alongside Brazilian Antony, who is also regaining fitness following a short break to deal with ongoing accusations of domestic assault amongst other claims from an ex girlfriend.

Beyond that we know Donny van de Beek and Tom Heaton featured, along with youth players - potentially including Dan Gore. U18s coach Travis Binnion was manager for the young United side.
