The Viera was not well.
Actually, that was an exaggeration -- she was fine. But 'beauty day' under Mistress Nashmeira was never as enjoyable as it initially sounded. Sure, the massages, skincare, and hot baths were a wonder on Meiko's otherwise-untaken-care-of body, but there was a price that had to be paid.
The price of having hot wax rip at every patch of hair that wasn't on her head, modesty be damned. She had been doing this for years now and still felt like apologizing when that dead-eyed Au Ri woman they always went to disinterestedly told her to open for business, so to speak. And of course, every time, Meiko would be awkward and apologetic and crack jokes before shuffling off to the baths after tipping very well. She wasn't even sure if she was allowed to give tips! She just did.
At least she hadn't cried in awhile, though. That meant... growth? Something. Although growth was the last thing she wanted right now as she settled into a cold-water bath in the main room. Ranaa, bless her soul, would be following her. Meiko could not imagine how a Miqo'te didn't die from it.
With a tiny whimper, she leaned back against the edge of the tub and let her head fall against it with a heavy, hollow thump. There was a dull pain to it, but she couldn't bother to pay any attention to anything but the relief of cool water on freshly-decimated fields. Although, it would have probably been more relieving if she didn't have this towel on.
She peeked one eye open. There were a few other people in the main room, but they weren't anywhere near the cool baths in the corner and seemed preoccupied. Would anyone notice if...?
Ah, fuck. Someone else was coming over. Meiko sank down deeper under the water as if to dismiss her own plan. Maybe the newcomer would notice these baths weren't the pleasant warm ones and avoid.

“Y’know what the key to winnin’ is?” Meiko could not help but strike up conversation with the wee Raen whom she had just watched lose at the crane game twelve times in a row. Even she got something after three or four tries! “Have a drink afore tryin’ again. Calms the nerves.”
This was a confidently stated lie. There was no secret outside of timing. But even if the lass told her to fuck off, sometimes an interruption was necessary on such a losing streak.

“Careful there, Warrior o’ Light – you stand ‘round too long, Nashmeira’ll try t'recruit you into the Troupe!” Meiko snorted, giving a wave with one chakram still in hand before approaching. “You and yours needin’ help again? Or waitin’ for the show? We’re not performin’ 'til after sunset.”
Troupe Falsiam had been earning quite a lot lately, so they weren’t quite hurting for gil so much as to need to send off one of their own (Meiko, specifically) to fight for it. But she didn’t mind helping out here or there for extra pocket change, either.

“–Ah, fuck. Don’t tell me you’re here to ask for help with some realm-endin’ shite just this minute,” That was usually why the Warrior of Light popped by, and most of the time, Meiko was up for a scrap or two in exchange for hard-earned gil.
But she had just settled down after a performance, and cracked open a box of chocolates someone had gifted her from the crowd. Was it poisoned? Probably not. And even if it was, all the trash she’d consumed as a child in her wee fishing town had probably given her an iron stomach. Just in case the their request was dire, she shoved two differently-flavored pieces into her mouth before he could answer.
Still chewing, she offered out the box, “Y'can have some if you like. Nashmeira’ll skin me if I finish it all m'self.”

Sometimes Meiko wondered if Nashmeira had recruited her solely based on the rarity of Viera in this part of the world. It definitely made more sense to her than ‘recognizing the grace she had’ or whatever nonsense she had spouted that day she had been recruited. Abducted, Ranaa often joked – but it wasn’t too far from the truth.
Still, she had never once regretted joining Troupe Falsiam. Untapped hidden talent or no, the steps of the Kriegstanz felt akin to how her Da had described the sea: Home. And Twelve knew she needed that grounding now, as they had left the familiarity of La Noscea and spent nearly all their gil on the airship passes necessary to make it to Ul'Dah next.
It wasn’t a terrible place, but the air was dryer and the sun beat down so mercilessly that she could feel new burn patterns etching themselves into her skin the longer she spent out of the shade. She wasn’t the only one, either; the musicians that traveled with them had also expressed concern about the heat to Mistress Nashmeira. Somehow, that had led to Meiko being volunteered to head to the marketplace to purchase aloe, or something equivalent to help protect them.
And here I thought Thavnair was just as warm, she thought as she weaved through the crowd, mindful not to accidentally send a wee Lalafell flying with her stride. At least, that was what she imagined whenever her fellow troupe members spoke fondly of their homeland. She had no clue, however, and tended to keep her mouth shut if she wasn’t well-versed in what was being discussed — which was the case in almost everything, as far as she was concerned.
She had to ask directions from a few different people to make it to the Sapphire Avenue, and by the time she did, could already feel unseen eyes trained upon her. She was clearly out of place here, never mind the damn rabbit ears, which meant savvy merchants were likely to prey on her naivete.
Tumblr media
This was a bloody mistake. But she couldn’t go back empty-handed, could she? Perhaps the gods would be kind to her and she’d find a merchant who wouldn’t swindle her…

"M'not used to bein' in significant danger, either, so we're square!" She had no idea why Thancred had been ambused by what looked to be those Garl...garlic...garland? Whatever. Those clunky invaders from the one empire, but they didn't have time to discuss motive at the moment.
Twisting on her toes, a share of her aether did its very best to at least stop the bleeding on his more minor wounds. It wouldn't be as good as a proper heal, but it would do for the moment.
"Let's just live to see 'nother round at the bar, eh?"
