-------------------------------------------------------------
Ram read through the books he had found in the nearby library and sighed to himself, closing his eyes and leaning back in his chair. The days have been long and hard, nothing really being enough. They weren’t really going anywhere, no real destination or outcome was visible in this unending battle to become free, and the only thing keeping them together was hope.
Well, hope for everyone else.
Ram held on because of another reason entirely, a reason he wasn’t even ready to admit out loud. His best friend, the woman who has been with him ever since he came clean of his doings and sought her help in freeing Bheem and Malli, Y/N. His Y/N, although he’d never tell her that.
Or so he thought.
Maybe it was the fact that she was slowly opening up to other people and wasn’t coming to him as much, or that he was seeing how men were noticing her, the green feeling of jealousy spread like wildfire in his heart. He was content with her as his closest friend before, but now he knew if he didn’t have her all for himself he would burn the village down.
Just as the heat of his thoughts began to spread in his head, a voice shook him out of his reverie. “Are you sleeping in the library, Ram? That’s not a very nice thing to do.”
Y/N’s tone was light and amused, and his eyes snapped open as he turned to her. She sat on top of the table beside his chair as she looked down at him with a small smile threatening to get bigger, and Ram’s heart beat faster than every train in the country. How dare she steal his heart and then look so innocent like she had done absolutely nothing?
Y/N was dressed in a royal peacock blue saree, her usual bangles and jhumkas glinting in the light of the library and his eyes zeroed down on the ridiculously beautiful kamarband she wore and the sweat drops on her hip trailing towards it.
Ram gulped harshly, rubbing his face as he smiled sheepishly at her. “What are you doing here? I heard you were busy today.”
Busy showing a few men around town, according to her little sister. Her sister had a smug smile as she raved about how the men wanted her sister around them for a while now, after all she was super pretty and-
“Ram? Are you even listening to me?” He blinked and looked up, the unimpressed look on Y/N’s face making him sit up straight, bashful. “I’m sorry, what were you saying?”
“I wanted to take a few books from you that you might recommend for me to read, since you know a lot of those. I was getting bored at home and thought to come to you for a few, what would you recommend?”
Ram stood up and frowned, looking through the books around him. “If you like science there’s a bunch of books here by the scientist Isaac Newton, translated from Latin to English. Or if you like fiction, I’d suggest…” Ram trailed off as she watched him silently, an unreadable expression on her face.
“Y/N, is everything okay? You look lost, did I- oh wait.” Y/N bit her lip slowly as Ram stepped closer to stand between her legs, a smirk on his face as he placed his hands on either side of her on the table. “You don’t know English, is that why you got so silent?”
She gulped, looking everywhere but at him as she slowly nodded. Ram smiled and shook his head, raising his hand to push her hair out of her face. “It’s not really that bad, you know? I can teach you English if you want, you don’t have to overthink it.”
Y/N looked at him, the same unreadable expression on her face as she thought about it. She studied his face, a small smile appearing on her face as she nodded.
“When do the classes start?”
“Why do they have 26 letters?” Y/N grumbled as Ram smirked at her while she furiously glared at the papers he put in front of her.
“We have so many more alphabets in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi and so many more languages that you already know, Y/N. This will be very easy for you. Now come on, do you remember them all? You’ve been staring at those pages for an hour, those alphabets and words.”
“I have no idea-”
“Let me help then.”
Ram scooted closer to Y/N, looking at the letters and then at her. “Look at these alphabets and the way they curve, see?” He grabbed her finger and put it on the paper, gliding it across each line drawn to spell out the alphabet ‘A’. He moved on to ‘B’ and tightened his grip on her wrist, the smile on his face widening just a little when he felt her stiffen, her breath stuttering as she glanced at him, her eyes wide and pupils dilated.
“What’s with you Y/N? Are you paying attention?”
She blinked twice and nodded hurriedly, looking at the paper again as she whispered the alphabets under her breath, Ram whispering them in her ear and commending her when she got them right.
“You look like you’re getting the hang of it, that’s nice.” Ram smiled and put the papers away, pressing a soft kiss into Y/N’s hair. Y/N sat straighter and nodded, trying to stand up when Ram wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her into his lap.
“I thought we were done, Ram.” She whispered, wiggling and trying to get out of his lap when he tightened his arm, pressing her back against his chest and chuckled, sending shivers down her spine. “We’re done when I say we’re done, got it? Now, let’s get on with it.”
Ram moved Y/N’s hair to the front and pulled her a little closer, resting his chin on her shoulder. “I’ll write an alphabet on your back, and if you get it right, you’ll be rewarded. Bonus points if you can even spell out the words that I’m writing. Okay?”
Her jhumkas danced as his warm breath hit her ear and she shivered, nodding slowly. “What reward are you talking about, though?” She said as he chuckled and moved her pallu out of his way, gazing at her bare back almost wolfishly. Y/N bit her lip as she felt his finger glide down her back, moving up and down and up again before stopping.
“You’ll know when you get it right. Now, what alphabet did I write?”
“Uh… was it ‘W’?” Ram smiled and nodded, his hot fingers moving down as he pressed a kiss to her back, right in the middle. Y/N instantly stood up, eyes wide and breath uneven as she stared at him, her pallu tightly gripped in her hands. “What… what did you just do Ram?”
Ram interlocked their fingers together and rubbed her knuckles soothingly, gazing up at her with soft eyes. “That was the reward, bangaram. Kavala vadda*?” Y/N tightened her grip on his fingers just a little and smiled at him, making him pull her back into his eager arms with ease.
One of Ram’s hands slipped back, rubbing patterns all over her back while the other one curled into her hair, tugging her closer till their lips were mere inches apart. “The next letter you get right will earn you another kiss. Now, which letter am I drawing on your back?”
Ram drew a line down her back and waited as she moved closer to him, the nervousness in her eyes evident. “Uh, ‘I’?” He smiled and leaned down, pressing a soft kiss just below her collarbone, looking up at her with twinkling eyes.
He drew a line down and then another across it, and she gasped, feeling his lips ghosting above her collarbone and waiting. “L.” Y/N tried to muffle her whimpers at each kiss he pressed against her body for each letter that left her mouth, burying her face into his neck.
“O.”
“V.”
“E.”
Ram gently lifted her into his arms, standing up as he walked to his bed. Y/N’s hands around his neck tightened as she slowly said, “You wrote this word on those papers. Love… love ante prema kada*?” Ram looked down at her with pride and pressed a kiss to her forehead as he set her down on his bed.
“Spell this word out, and you’ll win this round.” Ram whispered softly, moving down till his head was level to her waist, and wrote on it, smiling at the way she shivered under his touch.
“Ram,” she whimpered, tugging at his hair as she brought him closer. He hummed along, waiting for her to answer, making her huff as she pulled him to her chest. “You wrote your name on me, now I’m out of patience.” Ram laughed as their lips collided, his palms roaming her entire body freely as her fingers got lost in his hair, trying to get him impossibly closer to her.
They kissed each other like it was the only thing they could do, like nothing else really mattered and they had no time left for anything else. Ram sighed into her lips, picking her up with ease as his lips trailed down south, his fingers fiddling with her blouse and unhooking expertly.
“Hold on, wait,” she panted as he pulled away, staring at her. “I love you, Ram.” Ram smiled like a thousand suns, the happiness immense and blinding as he showered her with kisses again, each kiss like it was their last.
“I love you, I love you so much.” He murmured against her lips, his movements getting messier as he tugged his shirt off, pulling at her saree and grumbling under his breath when his hands got tangled in her pallu and he couldn’t get himself out.
“Why is this- oh my God, why is this tightening around my hands? Y/N, a little help?” Y/N chuckled and sat up, straddling him and resting her arms on his shoulders. “Nidaname pradhanamu, vinnava eppudaina*? With what you’ve done, I’m pretty sure it will take a long time to get you and me both out of my saree.”
She combed her fingers gently through his hair gently and smiled as Ram sighed in contentment, tugging his hair back harshly to see his eyes open in shock and a strangled moan leave him.
“Hadavidi lo gadabida*, people should learn this from you. Go easy, I’m not running away from you. I’ll stay till the end.” Ram sighed and smiled at her, leaning forward to press his forehead against hers as he breathed in, the sense of ecstacy and elation that filled him seemingly never ending.
“I love you,” he whispered against her lips as she smiled, gently kissing him. “I love you too, you strong impatient man.”
Both of them drowned in each other’s presence, blissfully unaware and ignorant of possibly anything else.
Ram woke up to an empty bed, the familiar smell that he associated with Y/N lingering in his room enough for him to know that she hadn’t left too long ago. He rubbed his eyes tiredly as he sat up, looking for her when he saw a piece of paper. He picked it up, his eyes widening before a smirk took over his face, the paper and the English on it falling down as he chuckled, looking out of the window as the Sun rose.
We should do this again, preferably next time with you knowing how to get my saree off.
All the love, Y/N.
----------------------------------------------------------
Kavala vadda?- Do you want it or not?
love ante prema kada?- it means love in English right?
Nidaname pradhanamu, vinnava eppudaina?- slow and steady, have you ever heard of it?

MAA_part1
MAA It was an usual sunday morning for me. Got up a bit late, around 9, checked my phone, heard a song. Like every sunday it was very relaxing till i went to the drawing room. I Saw a woman inside my kitchen looking for something. She had a child following her. The mother was around 34-35 dark and thin. She was in a dirty saree that was torned at some places. Anyone could guess that she had not washed her face for months with a wound in her right forearm. the child was hardly 4 or 5, shirtless seem to be starving for 10-15 days. She was stealing something from my kitchen and i had no idea from where she made it into my house. I was clueless what to do. When i shouted who she was! she started running taking her child in her arms. I ran behind her but could not find where she went. I rushed out and knocked the door next to my house. The neighbour aunty opened the door and i explained her the whole incident and asked her be careful. Aunty asked me to come inside and offered a cup of tea. Being a tea lover i couldn't deny and went inside. We were having a general discussion on how bhubaneswar is getting unsafe in broad daylight now a days and suddenly i felt someone trying to get into Aunty's home too. In no time i realised it was she again and this time i was not going to miss the chance. We both became quite and waited for her to come inside. I had a laathi in my hand which aunty kept ready for emergencies and she stayed back to witness my bravery. As soon as the mother enterted with the child in her arms i blew the laathi targeting her belly and as a reaction she moved aside and the laathi striked the kid in his left knee. The Child started crying but mother was still silent. She hadnt uttered a word till now.she was teary but mute. After screaming at the mother i noticed the mother for a while and got to know she is not there to steal anything..may b she is hungry, may b her child needs food or may b she wants to tell something. I stepped ahead n asked her who is she.she didnt say anything. Again i tried to know about her, but she was very scared n not i was clueless. Then i thought lets give them some food. I showed a biscuit packet to her and the look in her eyes itself spoke million words in a fraction of second. She just grabbed the packet from me n started feeding her child. After a while she also started eating. This continued for around 10minutes where me and my neighbor aunty were just audience there and waiting for them to finish so that we could know their story. They were eating as if there was no tomorrow for them, or they had not eaten for at least 8-10 days. For a moment i also felt parle g is not that bad. Finally they finished the whole packet and i gave her some water and asked if she can tell me who she is and wat she is doing there. But in no time i got to know that she could nt understand my language. So one thing was clear that she was not from here. I started telling the language names like salmn was doing in bajrangi bhaijaan if it could help. I said hindi. There was no change in expression of her face. Punjabi? No. Bengali? No no. Telugu ? No. Tamil? ? ? A small pause was there in here face when i said that. I noticed it. I asked again. Are u tamil? She was trying to say something but it was like she had forgotten to speak or she had not spoken for ages now. My inner voice told me she is in trouble. I decided to help her atleast by taking her to the police station. I was trying tell her that im gonna help u to the police station n she was not getting it at all and suddenly something came into my mind. I strated searching for my tamil friend's number from office if he could help. Called Salman (my friend) and like all other friends he started scolding me .. machaa u have forgotten. U call only when there is some work or when u need money. I stopped him and told the whole story, asked him to be a translator to me. He said he will try to talk to her. I passed the phone to the lady and she didn't say anything. Salman tried to tell something in tamil so that she can reply to that. It worked. She responded to him. Then they both started talking and i was totally blank what was going on. She talked for more than 15 minutes with her teary eyes. She passed the phone to me and till then my excitement for knowing about her was at peak. I jumped onto the phone and asked what she told. What salman told me was beyond my imagination. I was saddened, broken and more than that i felt guilty of behaving rude with her and her child at first. Sandeep

To Be ‘Amar’ Is To Be Immortal; Will Amar Chitra Katha Stand The Test Of Our Critical Times?
Tumblr media
Remembering ACK, Tinkle comics and Chandamama.
Once upon a time, there was magic hidden between the pages of a comic book. They came under the common branding of Amar Chitra Katha and opened a window to a world most of us didn’t know existed – stories drawn from Indian history, mythology, folk lore and legend. Stories we had perhaps heard about but forgotten under the burden of academic pursuits and the struggles of our day-to-day existence. As illustrated books with thought and speech bubbles for the dialogues exchanged between them, all captured within 31 pages. There were tiny footnotes to explain typically Indian words, rituals, Gods, customs and so on. Each comic made a dent in our hard-saved pocket money – a dent of Rs.2.50 to begin, which was later raised by 0.50 paisa.
One man was responsible for this comic book revolution - Anant Pai. Story has it that he was on an official trip from Mumbai to Delhi in 1967, intrigued by the television set that had entered the capital through Doordarshan. Wanting to have a dekko of what lay behind that box, he watched a television programme through the display window of a shop. He was shocked to discover that in the quiz show, children could give correct answers to questions around Socrates and Winston Churchill, but did not know the name of Rama’s mother!
This chemical engineer orphaned as a young boy, realised that children loved comic book heroes like The Phantom. Leisure reading of children studying in English medium schools was also confined to Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Enid Blyton’s and a few comics like Richie Rich and Tintin.

Phantom made ‘politically correct’ for the Indian reader. Image source: thephantomhead.com
He wanted to bring Indian kids back to their roots and joined India Book House, one of the leading publishers in Bombay that was largely into printing, publishing, distribution and selling of books. Pai had already introduced the Phantom series as the first cartoon strip in The Times of India and wanted to use this form of visual reading to entertain and educate through Indian stories. And so the first Indian comic book was born under the brand name of Amar Chitra Katha. It went on to become one of the most popular and high selling series of Indian comics.
Slowly, sales picked up. ACK classics initially used primary colours - blue, green and yellow but graduated to full colours as it’s popularity began to rise. Pai and his team extended the parameters to bring in regional languages - beginning with translations in Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, and Telugu and further into Bengali, Assamese, Malayalam, Punjabi, Tamil, Urdu and even Sanskrit. It reached beyond its initial target of a middle-class readership to transcend class barriers and reach the upper class children. As ACK reached its 20th birthday in 1986, sales reached a peak of 5 crore copies, and then only two years later, a whopping 7 crores.

Frequency also went from one classic every month to to one every fortnight around 1980. This was when IBH also launched its comic magazine Tinkle, that caught the reading fancy of all children at the time. The language used was simple, straightforward, and easy to understand by children not studying in English medium schools.

An entire generation isnt even aware of this. Image source: amarchitrakatha.com
Amar Chitra Katha opened doors to an alternative visual culture that strived to adhere to its Indian roots. Yet, like all mothers everywhere, I would not allow my daughter to devour the comic books she was slowly getting addicted to. “It will take you away from your studies,” was my boring refrain. Scared of being stopped from reading what she had grown to love, she handed me an issue of Tinkle and asked me to read it. Tinkle was a weekly comic magazine brought out by the same publication – India Book House and the same man. I was bowled over. It was informative, funny, entertaining and carried a message and amusing adventures of the characters. It took me to one story from the ACK series, Ganga and I became a child all over again. I bought my daughter an annual subscription for Tinkle and, separated by a generation, we enjoyed the stories that could be read over and over again.

Chandamama, another magazine along the same lines, began to create and publish stories adapted from the Indian mythologies such as Ramayana and Mahabharata in 1947, just before Independence. In publication to this day, the magazine and its illustrations are known for its unique storytelling, reminiscent of grandparents' bedtime stories conveyed in print format. This was backed very innovatively with promotional strategies organized by IBH of fancy dress contests, displays in petrol pumps and book stores across every Indian city, launching new titles with press conferences graced by eminent personalities. By 1992, ACK classics were published and sold in 38 Indian and non-Indian languages by which time, Anant Pai had evolved into the children’s icon “Uncle Pai.”

Not surprisingly, these books started facing a lot of flak from sociologists, cultural historians, comic specialists and so on. This critique is an on-going process of sometimes making mincemeat of the series or questioning its authenticity or pointing out its pro-Hindu, anti-minority and extremely patriarchal bias as far as the representation of women characters go. There has been a lot of research both by Indian and foreign scholars on ACK’s representation of women.
Moot points were, women are conspicuous by their complete absence from the story and the illustrations such as Chandragupta Maurya or many of the Birbal stories. However, there were women protagonists in classics featuring Ganga, Draupadi, Shakuntala, Savitri, Vasavdatta, Mirabai, Padmini, Tarabai, Rani of Jhansi, Uloopi, Chand Bibi, Urvashi, Sukanya and many others. Another noticeable absence was in the Makers of Modern India series of 13 personalities that does not feature a single woman, though India has had many women leaders who should have found place among these makers. Leaders like Indira Gandhi and Sarojini Naidu are not part of this series and Kalpana Chawla was an afterthought. The same absence is noticed in the visibility of Muslim and Sikh leaders.
Rohan Islam, a Bengali literature scholar, in a detailed analysis raises questions about the ACK series that mark out sharp differences between “they” and “we”, “bad” and “good”, “us” and “them”. Islam also draws our attention to the Brahmin-Hindu-Male that takes precedence over Muslims, Christians, Sikhs and of course, women. He states quite assertively that the equations drawn between the Hindu identity and the National identity are quite sharply underlined.

This leaves us with questions. Why must we always place an entertaining comic series for children with informative stories on our culture, leadership, freedom struggle by contextualising it against the changing history and politics of changing times? Can one deny the historical significance of a classic series that has stood the test of time and space for four long decades? Can we deny ourselves the joy we got going through those stories and wonderful illustrations that took children away from their exams and more serious books? Take away the political, patriarchal and communal biases, which do not appear pronounced while we are reading purely for entertainment and information, and what we have is a harmonious ride into our cultural past.
Uncle Pai is no more. Long live uncle Pai. And with the magic between the yellowed pages of an antique Amar Chitra Katha, we can all live happily ever after. Or, can we?

WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND August 30, 2019  - Labor Day Blahs
I was trying to decide whether to do one of these this week, because it’s Labor Day weekend, and this is likely to be a particularly short column because I HAVEN’T SEEN ANYTHING! In fact, I’m not even doing my regular Box Office Preview column over at The Beat, because there just doesn’t seem to be much point to it. There used to be a time when studios would release movies over the four-day holiday weekend but not so much anymore, and this is a particularly weak Labor Day with no new movies opening in 1,000 theaters or more. No, it’s more about reexpanding movies already in theaters like Spider-Man: Far from Home in order to try to make more money before the summer is over.  But if this is boring, you can also read my 2019 Summer Box Office wrap-up over at The Beat.
Tumblr media
The only new “wide” release is BH Tilt’s latest release DON’T LET GO, a thriller directed by Jacob Estes (Rings) and starring David Oyelowo and Storm Reid from A Wrinkle in Time, and it’s not even opening in 1,000 theaters. It might not even get into the top 10.  Apparently, BH Tilt is now going as “OTL Releasing” but I don’t think this movie has as much buzz as Leigh Whannell’s Upgrade, released by Blumhouse’s distribution branch in June 2018 to make $4.7 million opening weekend and $14.4 million total domestic. I don’t see Don’t Let Goopening that big as its plot is far vaguer, and I think if this make more than $4 million over the four-day holiday, it would be considered a coup since it’s only playing in less than 1,000 theaters. Who knows? I might even go see it on a lark.
Interestingly, there are two foreign language films from other countries (because as hard as it might be to believe, they speak other languages in other countries!) getting moderate releases this weekend: Sujeeth’s Bollywood action-thriller SAAHO (Yash Raj Films) and from Mexico, Ariel Winograd’s Spanish language TOD@S CAEN released by Lionsgate’s LatinX division Pantelion Films. I will be the first to admit that I’m not the best person to gauge interest in either movie because they’re not my communities, so I rarely see much marketing for these films.
Opening on Thursday, Saaho actually looks pretty cool, and if I can find three hours of time over Labor Day, I might actually check it out. It’s being released in three languages versions: Hindi, Telugu and Tamil, all with English subtitles, and that seems very groundbreaking, and it will also be in IMAX theaters. This could be another hit for Yash Raj ala the “Dhoom” series—Dhoom 3 opened with $3.4 million in 239 theaters in 2013 -- and possibly the studio’s widest release since 2018’s Thugs of Hindostan.
Check out the Hindi trailer below:
youtube
(Oddly, Saaho was supposed to be released on India’s Independence Day August 15, but then was pushed back to American Labor Day. Bollywood films tend to get day and date releases nationwide to avoid piracy.)
Tod@s Caen (pronounced “todos caen” – don’t yell at me! It wasn’t my idea!) stars Omar Chapparo, the hot Mexican star from Pantelion’s hits No manches Frida and its sequel plus How to Be a Latin Lover. No manches Frida grossed about $11.5 million after its $4.6 million opening over Labor Day in 2016 while the sequel opened slightly bigger this past March but grossed less. Latin Lover was a huge crossover success for Chapparo and Pantelion, grossing $32.1 million.  This is likely to be more in the former category and opening in 365 theaters, it probably can make around $3 million or more.
STREAMING AND CABLE
Tumblr media
There aren’t many movies I can recommend, but at least I can recommend the new Netflix series THE DARK CRYSTAL: THE AGE OF RESISTANCE, which is a prequel to the 1982 Jim Henson movie that was made quite lovingly using the same puppeteering techniques as well as some of the same designers from the original movie. Plus the series has an absolutely brilliant voice cast that includes Taron Egerton, Helena Bonham-Carter, Anya Taylor-Joy, Alicia Vikander, Sigourney Weaver, Natalie Dormer, Lena Headey, Jason Isaacs, Theo James, Mark Strong, Toby Jones, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Simon Pegg and many, many more. As someone who wasn’t really a fan of the original movie, I found myself quite wrapped up in this series, having watched the first five episodes so far, and I think fans and non-fans alike will dig it.
You can read my interview with the writers over at The Beat.
(Netflix is also releasing a movie called Falling In Love, starring Christina Millan and Adam Demos... but that title... I just can’t!
Amazon Prime will begin streaming its own fantasy series, the very different Carnival Row, starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne, on Friday. It’s a steampunk noir crime series in which Bloom is an inspector trying to solve some Jack the Ripper style murders of the city’s fae and puck population, fantastical creatures who act as the city’s slave labor. I didn’t enjoy this nearly as much as it just doesn’t feel like my kind of thing even though I do love Victorian era stuff usually. I think it just hasn’t found its footing in the couple episodes I’ve seen. I also interviewed a few of the actors which will be on The Beat later today.
LIMITED RELEASES
Okay, I definitely lied as I’ve also seen Kim Farrant’s ANGEL OF MINE (Lionsgate), an amazing psychological drama starring Noomi Rapace as a woman whose daughter died but whom thinks that her neighbor’s daughter is actually her own. Also starring Yvonne Strahovski, Luke Evans and Richard Roxburgh, this mostly Australian film is actually a little like the recent After the Weddingin terms of the strangeness of its premise but it’s handled more like a thriller and Rapace gives another stirring performance. It will be in select cities starting Friday, and I recommend checking it out, especially if, like me, you’re a long-time fan of Ms. Rapace.

Never got around to seeing Gavin Hood’s new movie OFFICIAL SECRETS (IFC Films), because I’m such a fan of Keira Knightley, and in this one she plays Katharine Gun, a British intelligence specialist handling classified information in the lead-up to the Iraq War in 2003. She receives a shocking memo from the NSA seeking help in collecting information on UN Security Council members to blackmail them into supporting an invasion of Iraq.
Hannah Pearl Utt’s BEFORE YOU KNOW IT (1091) stars the co-writer/director as stage manager Rachel Gurner who lives in her childhood apartment with her sister Jackie (Jen Tullock), father Mel (Mandy Patinkin) and preteen niece Dodge (Oon Yaffe) above the theater they own and operate. After a tragedy, the two sisters find out their mother, long thought dead (Judith Light) is still alive working on soap operas and they need to come to terms with that. The movie also stars Mike Colter and Alec Baldwin and it opens in select cities.
Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst also has a new movie as director, a thriller called THE FANATIC (Quiver Distribution), starring Devon Sawa from Final Destination and John Travolta. Travolta plays movie fan Moose who is obsessed with his favorite action hero Hunter Dunbar, played by Sawa. With the help of his paparazzi photographer friend Leah (Ana Golja), Moose tries to find Moose as his interactions with the celebrity become more dangerous as Moose becomes more obsessed.
Liam Hemsworth from “The Hunger Games” stars in Malik Bader’s Killerman (Blue Fox Studios) as a New York money launderer who wants to find answers after waking up with no memory and with millions in cash and drugs, as he’s chased by a team of dirty cops. The movie also stars Emory Cohen, Diane Guerrero (“Orange is the New Black”) and Suraj Sharma from Life of Pi, and it’s getting a small theatrical release in select cities.
Now playing at New York’s Film Forum is Marjoline Boonstra’s doc The Miracle of the Little Prince (Film Movement) which looks at the sustained global popularity of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince in the eight decades since it was first published.
Opening in IMAX theaters Thursday and then nationwide Sept 6 is the Chinese animated film Ne Zha (WELL Go) about a young boy with superpowers who must decide between good and evil.
There’s a couple other things but I’m so behind for the weekend that I’m done.
REPERTORY
A few rep things to mention before we get to the regular theaters. The Wachowski’s original The Matrix will be celebrating its 20thanniversary with a rerelease across the nation in Dolby theaters, so I’ll be seeing that Thursday night. The Alamo in Brooklyn is also screening a special 70mm print of Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo, and that’s where I’ll be on Saturday.
METROGRAPH (NYC):
On Friday, the Metrograph will begin screening a 35mm print of Eric Roehmer’s 1986 film Le Rayon Vert, but there lots of series continiung through the weekend including the “Shaw Sisters” series which is fairly interesting so far. Angie Chen’s Maybe It’s Love (1984) plays again on Thursday evening –that’s a weird one—and Ann Hui’s Starry Is the Night (1988) will play tomorrow and Sunday and a few others. If you want to see a weird and really bad but very funny horror film, you have to check out Angela Mak’s The Siamese Twins on Saturday night, plus there’s a few more I haven’t seen. The Metrograph has also expanded its “Godard/Karina Late Nights” series so that you can see Alphaville (1965) and Pierrot Le Fou (1965), both beloved classics, through the weekend, as well as this weekend’s offering to the series, 1962’s Vivre Sa Vie. AERO  (LA):
Thursday begins a “Sellers and Southern Double Feature” series (?) of Dr. Strangelove (1964) with The Magic Christian (1969), Friday is a double feature of 1999’s Office Space with Kevin Smith’s Clerks(1994) and then on Saturday is a Mad Max TRIPLE Feature of the first three movies: Mad Max (1979), The Road Warrior (1982) and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985). NCERT Class 12 English Chapter 1 The Last Lesson
NCERT Class 12 English :: Chapter 1 The Last Lesson
(English Flamingo Prose)
QUESTIONS FROM TEXTBOOK SOLVED:
THINK AS YOU READ Q1. What was Franz expected to be prepared with for school that day?Ans:  That day Franz was expected to be prepared with participles because M. Hamel had said that he would question them on participles. Franz did not know anything about participles.
Q2. What did Franz notice that was unusual about the school that day?Ans: Usually, when school began, there was a great bustle, which could be heard out in the street. But it was all very still that day. Everything was as quiet as Sunday morning. There was no opening or closing of desks. His classmates were already in their places. The teacher’s great ruler instead of rapping on the table, was under M. Hamel’s arm.
Q3. What had been put up on the bulletin-board?Ans: For the last two years all the bad news had come from the bulletin-board. An order had come from Berlin to teach only German in the schools of Alsace and Lorraine. The Germans had put up this notice on the bulletin-board.
THINK AS YOU READ Q1. What changes did the order from Berlin cause in school that day?Ans: M. Hamel had put on his best dress—his beautiful green coat, his frilled shirt and the little black silk cap, all embroidered. The whole school seemed so strange and solemn. On the back benches that were always empty, the elderly village people were sitting quietly like the kids.
Q2. How did Franz’s feelings about M. Hamel and school change?Ans: Franz came to know that it was the last lesson in French that M. Hamel would give them. From the next day they will be taught only German. Then he felt sorry for not learning his lessons properly. His books, which seemed a nuisance and a burden earlier were now old friends. His feelings about M. Hamel also changed. He forgot all about his ruler and how cranky he was.
UNDERSTANDING THE TEXT Q1. The people? in this story suddenly realise how1 precious their language is to them. What shows you this? Why does this happen?Ans: M. Hamel told the students and villagers that henceforth only German would be taught in the schools of Alsace and Lorraine. Those who called themselves Frenchmen would neither be able to speak nor write it. He praised French as the most beautiful, the clearest and most logical language in the world. He said that for the enslaved people, their language was the key to their prison. Then the people realised how precious their language was to them. This shows people’s love for their own culture, traditions and country. Pride in one’s language reflects pride in the motherland.
Q2. Franz thinks, “Will they make them sing in German, even the pigeonsT’ What could this mean?(There could he more than one answer.)Ans: This comment of Franz shows a Frenchman’s typical reaction to the imposition of learning German, the language of the conquerors. Being deprived of the learning of mother tongue would mean cutting off all bonds with the motherland. Teaching the pigeons to sing in German indicates how far the Germans would go in their attempts of linguistic chauvinism.
TALKING ABOUT THE TEXTQ1. “When a people are en slaved, as long as th ey hold fast to their language it is as if they had the key to their prison.”Can you think of examples in history where a conquered people had their lan¬guage taken away from them or had a language imposed on them?Ans: Mother tongue helps a person to express his feelings and thoughts most lucidly and intimately. Conquerors try to subdue and control the people of the enslaved territory by enforcing many measures such as use of force to crush dissent and imposing their own language on them. From time immemorial the victorious nations have imposed their own language on the conquered people and taken away their own language from them. The Romans conquered many parts of Europe and replaced the local languages by their own language— Latin. Later on Spanish, Pourtuguese, Italian and French developed from Latin. The Muslim invaders imposed Arabic and Persian in the countries of Asia overpowered by them. In many Arab countries the local religion and language have disappeared. In India, a new language Urdu developed from the mixture of Persian and Hindi.
Q2. What happens to a linguistic minority in a state? How do you think they can keep their language alive? For example:Punjabis in     BangaloreTamilians in   MumbaiKannadigas in  DelhiGujaratis in     KolkataAns. The linguistic minority in any state is easily marked and faces the same discrimination as the religious, social or ethnic minorities. There is, however, a pronounced difference in the treatment meted out and the level of acceptance displayed by the majority community in that region/city. Some cities like Delhi, Mumbai are cosmopolitan in outlook. The linguistic minority tries to preserve its identity through an intimate contact, interaction and preservation of their language in social get-togethers, family functions and festivals of their own region. Adherence to social customs and traditions in family gatherings/group meetings of women also promote the unity between members of the linguistic minority. In short, they create a mini-Punjab in Bangalore, mini-Chennai in Mumbai, mini-Bangalore in Delhi and mini-Surat in Kolkata.
Q3. Is it possible to carry pride in one’s language too far? Do you know what “lin¬guistic chauvinism” means?Ans. ‘Linguistic chauvinism’ means an aggressive and unreasonable belief that your own language is better than all others. This shows an excessive or prejudiced support for one’s own language. Sometimes pride in one’s own language goes too for and the linguistic enthusiasts can be easily identified by their extreme zeal for the preservation and spread of their language. In their enthusiasm, love and support for their own language, they tend to forget that other languages too have their own merits, long history of art, culture and literature behind them. Instead of bringing unity and winning over others as friends, having excessive pride in one’s own language creates ill-will and disintegration. The stiff-resistance to the acceptance of Hindi as national language by the southern states of India is a direct outcome of the fear of being dominated by Hindi enthusiasts. The result is that ‘One India’ remains only a slogan.
WORKING WITH WORDS Q1. English is a language that contains words from many other languages. This inclusiveness is one of the reasons it is now a “world language”. For example’.petite – Frenchkindergarten – Germancapital – Latindemocracy – Greekbazaar – HindiFind out the origins of the following words:tycoon barbecue zerotulip veranda skilogo robot trekbandicootAns.Word Origin Word OriginTycoon Japanese Veranda PortugueseTulip Persian Robot CzechLogo Greek Zero ArabicBandicoot Telugu Ski NorwegianBarbecue Spanish Trek South African Dutch
Q2. Notice the underlined words in these sentences and tick the option that best explains their meaning:(a) “What a thunderclap these words were to me!”The words were(i)loud and clear.(ii)startling and unexpected.(iii) pleasant and welcome.(b)“When a people are enslaved, as long as they hold fast to their language it is as if they had the key to their prison.”It is as if they have the key to the prison as long as they(i)do not lose their language.(ii)are attached to their language.(iii)quickly learn the conqueror’s language.(c)Don’t go so fast, you will get to your school in plenty of time. You will get to your school.(i)very late.(ii)too early.(iii)early enough.(d)I never saw him look so tall.M. Hamel (i) had grown physically taller.(ii) seemed very confident.(iii) stood on the chair.Ans. (a) (ii) startling and unexpected.(b) (ii) are attached to their language.(c)(iii) early enough.(d)(ii) seemed very confident.
NOTICING FORM 1.Read this sentence:M. Hamel had said that he would question us on participles. In the sentence above, the verb form “had said” in the first part is used to indicate an “earlier past”. The whole story is narrated in the past. M. Hamel’s “saying” happened earlier than the events in this story. This form of the verb is called the past perfect.Pick out five sentences from the story with this form of the verb and say why this form has been used.Ans. (i)For the last two years all our bad news had come from there.Reason: The ‘coming’ of bad news happened earlier than the bulletin in the story.(ii)Hauser had brought an old primer.Reaeon : The event of ‘bringing’ happened earlier than Franz noticed it.(iii) That was what they had put up at the town-hall!Reason’. The action of ‘not going* happened much earlier.(v)the hopvine that he had planted himself twined about the windows to the roof.Reason’. The ‘planting’ of hopvine happened earlier than its twining about the windows.
WRITINGQ1. Write a notice for your school bulletin board. Your notice could be an announcement of a forthcoming event, or a requirement to be fulfilled, or a rule to be followed.Ans:
Q2. Write a paragraph of about 100 words arguing for or against having to study three languages at school.Ans:                             STUDYING THREE LANGUAGES AT SCHOOLIn most of the states in India, students have to study three languages at school. One of them is the mother tongue, the second is Hindi (the national language) and the third is English (the international or link language). In Hindi speaking region, a South or East Indian language—Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malyalam or Bangla, Oriya, Assamese etc is taught. The three language formula helps in national integration by acquainting young students about the social customs, rituals, culture and traditions of the various parts of the country. It also focuses on the principle of unity in diversity. The only drawback in this system is that it puts an excessive burden on the minds of the young learner. To alleviate their problem, the courses of study in the three languages may be structured suitably.
Q3. Have you ever changed your opinion about someone or something that you had earlier liked or disliked? Narrate what led you to change your mind.Ans: Facts are sometimes stronger than fiction. Many occurrences of life come as eye-openers. Such an experience occurred the previous day which led me to change my mind about our hostel warden Miss Angela Thomas. Overnight the terrible titan was transformed into a loving and affectionate elder sister full of milk of human kindness. Now when I remember how I disliked her and invented nicknames and pranks to tease her, I feel ashamed of myself. Yesterday, I had a terrible nightmare and I cried and wept. My room-mate failed to console me and reported the matter to the warden. God knows how long I remained unconscious! When I came to my senses I found my head in the lap of Miss Angela Thomas. Her eyes were red with tears and bps moving in prayer. She had really proved an angel for me and saved me.
THINGS TO DOQ1. Find out about the following (You may go to the internet, interview people, consult reference books or visit a library.)(a)Linguistic human rights(b)Constitutional guarantees for linguistic minorities in India.Ans: Extension Activity: To be done under the Teacher’s Guidance.
Q2. Given below is a survey form. Talk to at least five of your classmates and fill in the information you get in the form.Ans: Classroom Activity: Do it yourself.
MORE QUESTIONS SOLVED
SHORT ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONSQ1. Why do you think was little Franz afraid of being scolded?Ans: Franz was afraid of being scolded that day especially because M. Hamel, the teacher, had said that he would question them on participles. Franz frankly admits that he was totally ignorant about the topic. His exact words are: “I did not know the first word about them.” Secondly, he had started for school very late that morning.
Q2. “It was all much more tempting than the rule for participles.” What did Franz find ‘much more tempting’? How did he finally react?Ans: Franz found that it was a very warm and bright day. The birds were chirping at the edge of woods. The Prussian soldiers were drilling in the open field at the back of sawmill. He could gladly spend life out of doors. However, he had the strength to resist the temptation. Finally, he hurried off to school.
Q3. “What can be the matter now?” says Franz. Why, do you think, did he make this comment?Ans: There was a bulletin-board near the town-hall. When Franz passed by it, he noticed a crowd there. He did not stop to look at it. He wondered what could be the matter then. For the last two yeairs they had received all the bad news from the bulletin-board—the lost battle, conscription and the orders of the commanding officer.
Q4. Who was Wachter? What did he ask Franz and why? How did Franz react?Ans: Wachter was a blacksmith. He was reading the latest bulletin. He asked Franz not to go so fast to his school. He added that the little boy would get to his school in plenty of time. Wachter had read the latest bulletin about teaching of German. Franz thought that the blacksmith was making a fun of him. So, he ran to the school and reached there breathless.
Q5. What was the usual scene when Franz’s school began in the morning?Ans: Usually, when the school began, there was a great bustle. The noise could be heard out in the school. Students opened and closed their desks. They repeated the lessons together very loudly. They kept their hands over their ears to understand better. The teacher would go on rapping the table with his great iron ruler.
Q6. How had Franz hoped to get to his desk? What had he to do and why?Ans: Franz had hoped to get to his desk unseen during the commotion. But that day it was very quiet. So, Franz had to open the door and go in before everybody. He blushed as he was late. He was frightened that the teacher might rebuke him, but M. Hamel spoke kindly to him that day.
Q7. What three things in school surprised Franz most that day?Ans: First, M. Hamel, the teacher had put on his fine Sunday clothes—his beautiful green coat, frilled shirt and the little black silk cap, all embroidered. Second, the whole school seemed quite strange and solemn. Thirdly, the village people were sitting quietly like school children on the back benches that usually remained empty.
Q8. Why had the villagers come to school that day? How did they look?Ans: The villagers had come there to thank M. Hamel for his forty years of faithful service. They also wanted to show their respect to the country that was theirs no more. They were sorry that they had not gone to school more. They were sitting quietly and looked sad.
Q9. “What a thunderclap these words were to me!” Which were the words that shocked and surprised the narrator?Ans: M. Hamel, the teacher, told the children in a solemn and gentle tone that it was their last French lesson. Henceforth, only German would be taught in the schools of Alsace and Lorraine. The new master would come the next day. As that was their last French lesson, he wanted them to be very attentive. The teacher’s kind gesture and use of soft words shocked and surprised the narrator.
Q10. How did Franz react to the declaration: ‘This is your last French lesson’?Ans: The words appeared startling and unexpected like a thunderclap. He now understood why there was a crowd at the bulletin board, why the village people had come to school, why the teacher was dressed in his Sunday best and why there was sadness and silence in the school.
Q11. What tempted Franz to stay away from school? [Delhi 2014]Ans: Franz was not prepared Tor the test on participles. The Prussian soldiers were drilling in the open field at the back of sawmill. The birds were chirping at the edge of woods. These things tempted him. So he hurried off to school.
Q12. Who did M. Hamel blame for neglect of learning on the part of boys like Franz?Ans: He thought it typical with the people of Alsace. They would put off learning till tomorrow. Parents are not quite anxious to have their children learn. They put them to work on a farm or at the mills in order to have a little more money. The teacher got his flowers watered or gave them a holiday. He too neglected their lessons.
Q13. What did M. Hamel tell them about French language? What did he ask them to do and why?Ans:M. Hamel told them that French was the most beautiful language in the world. It was the clearest and the most logical language. He asked them to guard it among them and never _ forget it. He gave a reason also. When a people were enslaved, as long as they held fast to their language, they had the key to their prison.
Q14. Why were the elders of the village sitting in the classroom? [All India 2014]Ans: M. Hamel was taking the class of last French lesson. That is why elders of the village were sitting in the classroom to attend it. It was done not only to pay respect to M.Hamel but to pay respect to his own language.
Q15. How did Franz and other hoys enjoy their lesson in writing? Ans: That day M. Hamel had new copies for them. The words “France, Alsace, France, Alsace” were written on them in a beautiful round hand. The boys set to work quietly. The only sound was the scratching of the pens over the paper. Nobody paid any attention to the beetles who flew in.
Q16. How did M. Hamel feel and behave during the last lesson?Ans: M. Hamel was solemn and gentle. He sat motionless in his chair during the writing lesson. He gazed at one thing or the other. Perhaps he wanted to fix in his mind how everything looked in that little school room. Surely, it must have broken his heart to leave it all after forty years.
Q17. “He had the courage to hear every lesson to the very last.” What led Franz to make this remark?Ans: Franz noticed that M. Hamel was feeling sad on having to leave the place sifter 40 years and not being allowed to teach French any longer. Yet, he kept control on his emotions. He performed his duties faithfully. He heard every lesson to the last. The school was dismissed only at mid-day prayer time.
Q18. What happened when the lesson in history was over?Ans: After the lesson in history was over, the babies chanted their ba, be, bi, bo, bu. Old Hauser, who was sitting at the back of the room, had put on his spectacles. He was holding his primer in both hands. He was spelling the letters with the babies.
Q19. “Ah, how well I remember it, that last lesson!” says the narrator. Which scene does he remember more vividly than the others?Ans:The narrator remembers the scene of old Hauser spelling the letters from the primer with the babies. He too was crying. His voice trembled with emotion. It was so funny to hear him that all of them wanted to laugh and cry at the same time.
Q20. How did M. Hamel behave as the last lesson came to an end?Ans: M. Hamel stood up in his chair. He looked very pale and tall. He wanted to say some parting words, but something choked him. Then he wrote “Vive La France!” on the blackboard with a piece of chalk. Then he stopped. He leaned his head against the wall. Without a word, he made a gesture to the students with his hand to permit them to go as the school was over.
LONG ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONSQ1. Why was Franz scared that day 1 What did he see on his way to school and how did he get to his deskiAns: Franz was not good at learning. He would rather take the day off and waste time in searching birds’ eggs or going sliding on the Saar. Franz was scared that day because M. Hamel had said that he would question them on participles. Franz did not know anything about participles. He found that the day was warm and bright. The birds were chirping at the edge of the woods. The Prussian soldiers were drilling in the open fields. There was a crowd in front of the bulletin-board near the town-hall.Franz found the school room unusually quiet. So, he had no option but to open the door and go in before everybody. He blushed and was frightened of the teacher. M. Hamel spoke very kindly to him and asked him to go to his place quickly. Franz jumped over the bench and sat down at his desk.
Q2. What order had been received from Berlin that day? What effect did it have on the life at school?Ans: An order had been received from Berlin that only German would be taught in the schools of Alsace and Lorraine. This order had far-reaching effects on the life at school. M. Hamel, who had been teaching French at the village school for the last forty years would deliver his last lesson that day.It was in honour of the last lesson that M. Hamel, the teacher had put on his best clothes. Old men of the village were sitting quietly at the back of the classroom. They were sad as well as sorry for they had not gone to school more. They had come to thank the master for his forty years of faithful service and to show respect for the country that was theirs no more. The teacher addressed the students in a solemn and gentle tone. He asked them to be attentive and explained everything quite patiently. He appealed to them to preserve French among them. During slavery it would act as key to the prison. He felt so overwhelmed by emotion that he could not bid farewell properly.
Q3. What do you think is the theme of the story ‘The Last Lesson’? What is the reason behind its universal appeal?Ans:The theme of the story ‘The Last Lesson’ is linguistic chauvinism of the proud conquerorsand the pain that is inflicted on the people of a territory by them by taking away the right to study or speak their own language and thus make them aliens in their own land of birth. The story has a sub-theme also. It highlights the attitudes of the students and teachers to learning and teaching.Though the story is located in a particular village of Alsace district of France which had passed into Prussian hands, it has a universal appeal. It highlights the efforts of the victors to crush their victims—the vanquished people in all possible manner—materially, spiritually, mentally and emotionally. Taking away mother tongue from the people is the harshest punishment. The proper equation between student and teacher, his focused attention, helpful and encouraging attitude and kind treatment can encourage students to learn better.
Q4. Comment on the appropriateness of the title ‘The Last Lesson’.Ans: The story has an appropriate and suggestive title. It is the centre of attention throughout and the whole story revolves around it. The beginning of the story serves as preparation for it. The unusual quietness at school, presence of village elders and the teacher in his Sunday best dress—all point out to the unusual and unique occasion—the last lesson in French in a French village school in a district conquered by the Prussians. While delivering the last lesson, the teacher wants to transmit all his knowledge in one go. He explains everything with patience and the students as well as old villagers listen attentively. For the narrator it is an unforgettable experience. “Ah, how well I remember it, that last lesson,” says he. Old Hauser is crying and his voice trembled with emotion. As the teacher is unable to express His emotions because of choked throat, he ends the lesson by writing Wive La France’ on the blackboard. He makes a gesture with his hand to indicate that the school is dismissed and students can go home.
Q5. What impression do you form ofM. Hamel on the basis of your study of the story ‘The Last Lesson’?Ans: M. Hamel is an experienced teacher who has been teaching in that village school for forty years. He imparts primary education in all subjects. He is a hard task master and students like Franz, who are not good learners, are in great dread of being scolded by him.The latest order of the Prussian conquerors upsets him. He has to leave the place for ever and feels heart broken. He feels sad but exercises self-control. He has the courage to hear every lesson to the last. His performance during the last lesson is exemplary. He is kind even to a late comer like Franz. He uses a solemn and gentle tone while addressing the students. He has a logical mind and can analyse problems and deduce the reasons responsible for it. The problem for Alsace is that he (the district) puts off learning till tomorrow. He knows the emotional hold of a language over its users. He is a good communicator and explains everything patiently. Partings are painful and being human, M. Hamel too is no exception. He fails to say goodbye as his throat is choked. On the whole, he is a patriotic gentleman.
VALUE-BASED QUESTIONSQ1. War causes destruction and spreads hatred. People feel insecure. Discuss the disadvan¬tages of war keeping in mind Franco-Prussian war (1870-71).Ans: War is a great threat to mankind. Fear, anxiety, tension and hatred are some of the offsprings of war. No individual is in favour of this brutal act. Innocent people lose their life because of the vested interests of some of the corrupt politicians. Moreover, war is not the solution to any problem. It only increases the hiatus between two nations. The desire to overpower the other disseminates hatred and the feelings of enmity. The aftermaths of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are evident before us. It should also be remembered that each nation is trying its level best to become a nuclear power. A nuclear bomb has the power to devastate nations. Thousands of people will lose their lives. There will not be any survivor. If someone is left alive, he/she will be crippled. There is no doubt that war has put the human existence at stake. We have heard seers say that one should shed one’s ego. The nations should also feel equally important. No nation is self-sufficient. Peace enhances creativity and productivity. The concept of a global village should be followed by all countries. Thus, war does not benefit any individual. It must not be encouraged.
Q2. It is often said that each language is unique in itself. No language is superior or inferior. People need to understand that a language is one of the means of communication. Discuss this statement in the light of the following lines:“My children, this is the last lesson I shall give you. The order has come from Berlin to teach only German in schools of Alsace and Lorraine. The new master comes tomorrow. This is your last French lesson…”Ans: Language is always considered a medium of communication. Man is a gregarious animal. He has to interact with the fellow human beings. Therefore, a set of complex symbols is designed to serve this purpose. We must ruminate over the past before discussing the status of a language. There are innumerable man made problems. At the dawn of civilisation there was no discrimination on the basis of caste, colour, creed, language and nationality. But in this century these problems exist. Nature does not segregate nations. Scientific advancement, material prosperity, lofty aspirations, materialistic attitude, a desire to rule the world and vested interests are some of the causes of human sufferings. The concepts of all languages are similar. They have nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions. As no religion is insignificant in the same way no language is inferior. The characteristics and nature of all languages are similar. The only difference is in symbols and pronunciation. The purpose and objective of all languages are synonymous. There is a dire need to understand that there should be only one religion i.e. humanity and there should be only one language i.e. the language of love. A language must not become the cause of rift among masses. It should bring people together instead of spreading hatred. One should not despise others because of their language. It is against human dignity and grace.
Q3. The people of Alsace and Lorraine were forced to study German. They were not allowed to study French. It implies that students of the area were taught only one language. They did not follow the concept of three languages at school. Write an article on the topic Advantages of Three Language System at school.Ans:                                                     Advantages of Three Language SystemIndia is a democratic stater. It is replete with people who have diverse backgrounds, and culture. Their customs and traditions vary. Their languages are also different. The language of a South Indian is entirely different from that of the North Indians. People have their regional languages and dialects too. In such circumstances it becomes a herculean task to decide which language should be taught at schools. So, India opted for three language system at schools. It is a boon to the residents of a particular area. They do not feel that their language is insignificant and ignored. They are given ample opportunities to opt for the languages they intend to speak or learn. Pupils get fundamental knowledge of three languages and can appreciate the literature of all these three languages. Such students never face failure due to language barriers. They bring laurels to their parents and nations as well. They explore new avenues and horizons with an astonishing ease. Three language system must be adopted by all nations so as to acquaint the children with various language patterns. The people of Alsace and Lorraine could be taught both languages i.e. German and French. Linguistic discrimination mars the future of humanity.
Q4. Nature has the knack to fascinate even the cynics. Its beauty and spontaneous music galvanise the beings. Write an article expressing the astounding beauty of nature in the light of the following lines:“It was so warm, so bright! The birds were chirping at the edge of the woods… It was all much more tempting than the rule for participles…”Ans. Our touch with nature makes the whole world kin. Matthew Arnold has rightly said that:
“Nature, with equal mind, sees all her sons at play, sees man control the wind, the wind sweep man away.”
Nature’s working is mysterious. It is an astonishingly fabricated universe. Man has, undoubtedly, progressed a lot. Scientific advancement has explored the portals of every field. The hidden realities have been exposed. But science has not unearthed the mysterious traits of nature. It is also an acceptable fact that nature gives happiness to weary minds. It soothes and consoles the troubled souls. It banishes anxiety, tension, worry, fear and dejection. Its law is to please every beholder. The aesthetic pleasure we derive from Nature is incredible and cannot be expressed in words. Keats has rightly averred that ‘A thing of beauty is a joy forever!’ Lord Byron has said:
“There is a pleasure in the pathless wood, there is a rapture on the lonely shore, there is a society where none intrudes, ‘By the deep sea, and music in its roar:I love not man the less but nature more.”
Nature is our mother. It must be obeyed. It gives us moral lessons. All the seers and intellectuals have understood the significance of nature. “Nature goes on her own way, and all that to us seems an exception is really according to order.” It fascinates those who are indifferent to life. The boring scientific explorations and linguistic principles make our life insignificant. We are becoming devoid of emotions. But nature evokes sentiments and help us to become sensitive.
Q5. Teachers can act as trailblazers in the lives of pupils. They can affect eternity. But the advancement of technology has changed the role of a teacher. Write an article on the para¬digm shift in educational technology and the role of teachers.Ans:                                                     Technology and TeachersIt goes without saying that teachers shape the destiny of children. They mould them according to their inbred potential and considerable talent. Dronacharya taught his pupils together. But he could not make everyone so skilled in using the bow and arrow as Aijuna. He identified his latent talent and tapped the same potential. In modem education system teachers don’t have much time to study the child. Children stay in the school campus for six hours a day and study various subjects from teachers. At times it happens that the subject teachers do not remember the names of students. They use PITs, projectors and computers to make their lectures interesting. They lack any kind of emotional attachment with the pupils. It has happened because of the innovative educational tools and aids. Teachers are given softwares to teach students. The teaching community has made students information seekers. The role of a teacher has undergone a sea change. A teacher has become a facilitator. He has no right to scold and punish the child. The dictum ‘spare the rod, spoil the child’ has become obsolete and outdated. A teacher has to understand the psychology of a child in a period of thirty minutes. The role of a teacher is a mystery in today’s era.

My roots are South Indian: Madhoo Shah
Tumblr media
My roots are South Indian: Madhoo Shah - A free wheeling chat with Bollywood actress Madhoo Shah who is working in two Kannada films right now. She is articulate, expressive and honest. There is something immensely likeable about Bollywood actress Madhoo Shah. The stylish lady, who is best remembered for her powerful performance in Mani Ratnam’s iconic film, Roja, is in Bengaluru working simultaneously on two Sandalwood films. In an exclusive interview with Bengaluru Chronicle, she chats with us amidst breaks, while shooting for a film at Kanteerava Stadium. “I am working on two Kannada films Seetharama Kalyana and the one I am currently shooting for Premier Padmini. Both the movies are in their last leg and the producers are aiming to release the films during Diwali,” says the charming actress who is married to Mumbai-based industrialist, Anand Shah. Madhoo, who is a Tamilian confesses that she cannot speak Kannada or any other south Indian language besides Tamil (her mother tongue). “I write the dialogues in English and rehearse the lines. I have done five-six Sandalwood movies. In fact, I have worked in all South Indian films be it Tamil, Telugu, Kannada or Malayalam. I am not a great linguist but I do understand the intonations,” she says adding, “After Tamil, I find it easier to speak Telugu followed by Kannada as their grammar is similar to Tamil. Malayalam is the hardest for me.” Madhoo who is best remembered for her award winning performance in the iconic Mani Ratnam starrer, Roja, (she won the Tamil Nadu State Award for best actress) believes that roles have fallen into her lap rather effortlessly. Speaking about Roja she says, “I have never angled for any role. As an artiste I am most remembered for Roja so I value that movie and treat it as special. It has given me life long recognition. I think the reason why Roja continues to be popular for decades is because it is AR Rahman’s first film as a music director, Mani Ratnam’s first Hindi movie and Arvind Swamy’s debut film. All these factors have contributed to its popularity over the years,” she explains. While Madhoo remains gratified for the recognition that Roja continues to bring her she insists that there are, “many movies where I thought I was good. Annaya in Kannada and Yodha (in Malayalam) are also special. In fact Yodha, has completed 25 years and is considered the Baahubali of those times. The Telugu movie Allari Payudi and even Hindi films like Yashwant and Pehchan have all contributed to my growth as an artiste,” she says., Speaking about what made her choose her current crop Kannada films, Madhoo opines, “For an artiste I speak for myself there is not one criteria, sometimes it’s a big production with great visibility and good publicity. If you are part of an ensemble cast like Seetharama Kalyana, its great. Sometimes the story and performance should be challenging as in the case of Premier Padmini, where you can grow as an artiste. Both films are diametrically opposite to each other,” says Madhoo. The actress was last seen in Ranna in 2016 and the film that won her a nomination for a film award. She candidly states, “I realised that one of my desires has been to win a popular award. Even for Roja, while I got the State Award, the popular ones eluded me. Now I am working with the hope of winning an an award. This is my dream,” says the actress who has been married to Anand for 20 years and has two teenaged daughters Ameya (18) and Keya (16). Speaking about her daughters, she admits, “My older daughter is interested in becoming an actress but she is also a bright student. In fact both my girls are good at their studies. So we are still evaluating the decision. At any rate, she will have to train for a couple of years, before she takes the plunge. Whatever her final decision, I will support her. My younger daughter is not so keen about films right now.” At a time when marriages are falling apart, what is the mantra to make a relationship work? “There is no such thing as perfection, everything comes from a decision. I want to stay married. I am imperfect, so is he. Sometimes its great, and sometimes annoying. There are ups and downs, why just spouse, your kids, parents, and even siblings can get annoying but they don’t stop being your family. I have realised that the man I have married is the man I love. We don’t hurt each other and are good together. My marriage has never been so bad that I have to break way. In marriage, acceptance and tolerance is important,” she reveals. Finally we ask her what makes Bengaluru special to her and Madhoo instantly responds, “My two besties Sharmila Khanna and Suman Ranganath live her. Sharmila took me for lunch to UB City and shows me around the city. Suman took me to a fun party. Essentially I am a South girl at heart. My roots are strongly South Indian. I love the local food, visiting the temples and meeting people in this city.” My roots are South Indian: Madhoo Shah Read the full article

Baaghi 2 Review: What A Circus!
'There's zero feeling and rationale in anything about Baaghi 2,' says Sukanya Verma.
Tumblr media
There's an solidity in his hyper-muscular teeth-gnashing, jumping-to-pound fervour. But the celebrity looks so keen to recreate Sylverster Stallone's system gun-blasting imagery, a good deal of it features in Baaghi two 's bang and boom climax already. Having survived the first Baaghi, I sort of understood what is coming.
Shroff does seem to have grown-up.  He seems to have acquired a personality and a loyal fan following among the youthful audiences.  His body appears to have gained more muscles, bronze and elasticity.  There are ways in which his shirt is torn as he goes about being Rambo-like, destroying the enemy.  Buff is gone by him for the scenes but dunks to the bathtub completely dressed, shoes included.  The masala mayhem is choreographed as the song-n-dance and he is athletic and agile in both.  However, there is still a lot of catching up to do on chops.  The face stays though the affectations -- pouts, moist-eyed and dreamy look -- have reduced considerably.
To the army respect is shown in these days of frenzy; cops can be awful, armymen can't.  So our young soldier, even in the midst of the mayhem he unleashes in the police station respects the tricolour and the cop's hat--he will not let them fall on the floor, will catch them mid-air when they're being flung around, together with individual bodies.
Disha Patni is indeed insipid, I can't decide what I'm feeling is exasperation or amazement. Instead of writing a conventional review, I decided to share some ideas while viewing this movie that was supremely 21, I penned down. Tiger Shroff is.  Just four decades and still waiting. Too bad there's no option for fast-forward.
The hero gets his standard flashback that is romantic.  (Although why he's fooling about as a pupil from KJo school of thought instead of already enlisted in NDA defeats me)
Later, the villain gets a flashback; a flashback is got by the villain's consort.  All I need are my 144 minutes back.
Tiger's allure burns the display and tramples scepticism in favour of a good time.  Frustrating the way that it never goes past the promise of potential.
1 cop is punched in the face, a couple of teeth fly off, but return just in time for the next scene. Tiger ShowOff! Throw into a eyes-above-muddy river instant from Apocalypse Now and King Kong-style music cue and jealousy, what have you got? Again the hero, from the virtue of being hero, gets flashbacks. Army man Tiger flies straight to Goa carrying this lightweight luggage, but the amount of clothes he changes into in a matter of days is stupefying.
There is zero logic and emotion in anything about Baaghi 2.
At the risk of it being a spoiler I need to point out the departure the movie makes from Hindi films of yore.  When the hero has managed to wipe out the villain and his cronies normally in our films that the cops come in late.  Here cops are present throughout, it's the military that arrives in the fag end, only to inform the hero that"the war is over".  Is the movie, thankfully. Manoj Bajpayee and Randeep Hooda are celebrities that are smart.  Not because they've done some great work in Baaghi two .  However, because they realise how small that this baloney requires. We shall not flog an horse no telling you how bad Jacqueline Fernandez's oversexualised but plastic version of'Ek do teen' is.  At the opposite end of the feminine presence in the film is the tender and coy heroine Neha (Disha Patni) who assertively says,"I carry pepper spray","I despise stalking" but voluntarily gives into the boy who has been relentlessly chasing her.
Whenever there's a sale 16, note to self: Buy one of these rucksack thingies.
His bare body is pummelled like some bug-infested mattress.  Yet not 1 scratch appears on that sculpted torso. There's another shade of reddish on forehead and Disha's face, its place varies as per the mood of make-up man.
And Manoj Bajpayee can hide his smugness over being remunerated off biscuits for polishing and saying lines such as'Get the machines.'
A bowl of gruel could have given a much better feeling of suffering than that which Disha does in this picture.
The Baaghi franchise -- there's a third one in the works -- is about ex-boyfriends coming into their woman's rescue until it culminates at a tooth-and-nail final battle.
Another personality --a righteous Muslim representation called Usman (who speaks about how his community is as much about kurbaani as biryani) describes his wife as the"Russian cutlet' who cooks and rears his kids.  Then there is the fauji hero Ronny (Tiger Shroff) who comes to the civilian world on depart from nationalistic duties to assist Neha, also his ex-sweetheart, figure her out daughter.  When one of those cops makes a pass at her, the entire police station turns in Goa down.  Though a number of these audiences may get thrilled at how Ronny breaks the teeth of their sleazy cop (all in close-up), I had been wondering at the film patronising women on the one hand while talking about rescuing their izzat on the opposite.   Then there are some jokes Kute and Kale-- that the cop that was invisible named Bosco, who retains yelling at the drop of a hat.  From the title of a story you are served several strung scenes, which, in their inanity, can get quite amusing occasionally together but largely bore you to death.  There are a number of throwaways that are easy.  The moment you find a character wearing all white, you know he is all inside.  A whole lot of actors are made to perform odd characters with Manoj Bajpayee, Randeep Hooda and Prateik Babbar gamely acting out.
Taking into consideration the trauma her personality is currently undergoing, her do not -like-my-photo-on-Aadhaar-card degree of intensity barely cuts it. An individual could show up only for the final 20 minutes of their Baaghi films and still not miss anything. The very best thing I could say about Baaghi 2 is that it does have its moments of'so bad it's good' gratification in Prateik Babbar's hammy dope head, the babyish wailing of a constable assisting Hooda and Tiger's bizarre boss, the man could put caricatures to shame with his'The war is over' solemnity. Continuity continues to be a sore spot for bruises and fictional injuries.
How about a few ikat or even phulkari next time?
Forget vain Tiger's commando is, I can't stop marvelling at how much of a person's wardrobe a rucksack can take. By the way how many Rambos is Tiger Shroff?  There is already an official movie at the pipeline. If this dexterity that is much can be delivered by a guy imagine what he can accomplish under script that is capable and a genuine manager? The hippy, higher cop of hooda bears an uncanny similarity to actor Amole Gupte and manager.  Like he cares in the event you notice he doesn't look.
Unless the nonsense that precedes it under the pretext of incentive retains any attention to you. Baaghi two , choreographer turned director Ahmed Khan's junky remake of the Telugu hit Kshanam is not any different.
Right from'Why on earth is Disha's father so opposed to her match with Tiger's to'that has got to be the strangest reason for kidnapping ever,' Baaghi two 's laughable twists and slyness are sloppy and forced.  Just like that completely needless early sequence inspired by the true incident of an army officer linking a Kashmiri neighborhood on jeep.

The 25th
Growing up in a city like Bombay has its charms. For some it the over-ambitious dreams, for some the glamour, for some the social circles. I am no different. Bollywood has had a big influence on me. I don’t mean in a stupid crazy way where I want to be an actor or some crazy fan. I meant in believing in the movie style romances. The hero always wins etc.  My life so far has turned out to be quite opposite.
I have always imagined us to be on a stage and He is watching and having a good time. It is true. I ought to play the role of a certain Dev Mehta this time. What do I have to complain about eh? But then I am one for the drama. I always thought I would make a big speech one day about life love etc and she would hear and then say proudly, “He’s mine.”
In the movies, the hero meets the love of his life, makes some big secret sacrifice for her but loses the girl over it, after a few sad songs, some friend goes and tells the girl about it and she realizes her love and runs back to him. For over 2 years I have been waiting for my moment when someone will tell her my side. She is too hurt to see it, and I don’t blame her, koi bhi yehi karta. I have broken her badly, but that was I swear to God out of immaturity and stupidity. It took me many a heart breaks to realize. By the time I realized my mistake, it was too late, she shut me out. She replaced me. So many moments, so many memories, so many promises, so many stories, all crushed in one moment. That feeling she still doesn’t know. How difficult it is to go through that. Khair, doesn’t matter now.
She has gone inside some cocoon of her ‘s and she is not her anymore. She claims to be happy, but I can sense the void. Her heart is broken thrice now, is that it? So has mine, so has a lot of people’s. I am not saying it is nothing, but she is hurting and that she is taking it out on the world. At least me. She has not even an inch of a clue as to what is happening in her life and she doesn’t care. That is not her. She was thing bubbly girl who had faith in people. I cannot let that go.
I get it, it is not my responsibility to fix her, but pyaar kiya hai toh nibhayenge bhi. She doesn’t want to talk to me like I mean something, koi baat nahi. I have to let her be, I have to give her time. Maybe, maybe just maybe one day she will be sitting on marine drive staring at the ocean and then she might realize kitni mohobbat ki hai (notice the filmy element :P but then English cannot do justice to poetry like Hindi.) Is mohobbat ke do pehlu hai, shayad usse mera dikh jaaye.
It’s funny how she has no idea how far across the oceans sits a man who cannot wait to share his world with her and she refuses to even remember him. But then thinking about her is a poison I drink too readily and too often.
25 years ago, I saw the world for the first time. It took me so long to understand it and I am not sure I have done it as yet. It is as beautiful as cruel. Man is weird. There is hardly any difference in between love and lust and it pains me. How unimportant sex can be. It is so common and cheap and the worst part is people even defend it. Either I am wrong about this or the world is. For I cannot find anyone who will stand up for something like this. They blame the situations and justify it. The body only belongs to the one who has your soul. Period.
I was so disheartened to hear that girl talk about her date with some Jewish guy and call it her first Jewish conquest. This is what it is come down to. This is the youth we are so proud of? Topics like ambitions, goals, achievements have been replaced by clubs, alcohol, girls. I get it, it is natural, but that Bollywood has left me with the idea of romance being sacrifice. I would spend my life for her rotting away in a corner and happily and that is what Bollywood has made me believe and to be honest, I do not see anything wrong with it. How do people just stop feeling for someone? Forever has become a myth.
The world has showed me one thing, I can loose myself easily. I can become like them, laugh at those comedy club people and go home without giving a rat’s ass about the truth that they heard. Nobody wants to aspire to be great and that bothers me. Everyone is selfish in today’s world. Politics, science, everyone. Nobody wants to admit they are wrong let alone fix it.  PhD people in the US, demand dowry. It is a common tradition amongst Telugu's is what Chandra says. I mean really?!?!?! He has the balls to say that to me. I have not spoken to him after that day. What is the purpose of education if you are still going to do this?
I have so much to complain about and there is nothing I can do about it but blabber. Maa says jo samaj ko Ram aur Krishna nahi sudhar sake usko hum kaise sudharenge. She is right, I can only play my part. He is the director after all. Who am I to complain?
This is the exact part I am going to show the next person who asks me why do I live in my fantasy world :P
P.S - I know continuity is very bad, but I wanted to vent so much, I didn’t have the time to form it :P
