Though I didn’t put off my children’s Halloween costumes until the last minute, I didn’t start cutting these doll costumes out until Monday. That meant planning and prepping before then, but the last minute push felt oh so familiar and necessary. Painting eyes and bones and hearts on witch babies tonight. These are destined for witch boxes, but I’m reserving one for a ritual for Ukraine, with a poppet standing in for Sovereignty. Poppets are a form of sympathetic magic, and besides the malevolent magic we might associate them with, they are also used in healing, protection, love and abundance spells. Mundanely, I opt to fill mine with rice or lentils, and try to use only biodegradable fabrics and materials, since my poppets all eventually end up buried. If you do use plastic buttons, you can snip them off before you burn or bury your poppets, if you choose to dispose of them when they finish their task.
