There is something about surrounding yourself with things that make you feel happy and inspired and creative. For me that is old brushes, older wood and color. ⠀⠀ Crazy right? But it’s true. I have always been a collector of old wooden “things.” From brick molds to crates to dresser drawers- all of them make me happy. I sit and wonder about the stories they could tell. Just imagine. ⠀⠀ And old brushes. I have truly lived what has unfolded as I have weathered the change that has come from evolving as an artist. ⠀⠀ And color. I need this to keep me feeling engaged and inspired as I create. I surround myself with a neutral palette in my home. How is it that we seem to gravitate to the same tools over and over again? I feel happy when I reach for an old scruffy brush. ⠀⠀ Sure, I love the shiny and new stuff as much as the next person, but the familiarity of something as simple as a favorite paintbrush is comforting. Who doesn’t love a big tall stack of colorful Pocket Journals? ⠀⠀ In case you’re wondering, many of these are full, and some are blank and waiting patiently for me to make my mark. ⠀⠀ I am a big believer in self motivation and am always looking to my own work for that spark of inspiration when I need it most. Sure I get uninspired. We all do- it comes with the forever evolving territory of an artist. But when I am really feeling lost in my art, I pick up one of these tiny books and start flipping through the pages. ⠀⠀ It always amazes me to find so many ideas that I had completely tucked away in the cracks of my brain. Forgotten. Texture, design, color, pattern, it’s all there waiting for me to reignite it in a new way, on a new page. ⠀⠀ The joy of reuniting myself with older works of art always catches me by surprise. Hello from my studio to yours. Today is one of those days that I woke up and felt like I could take on the world. Of course it is also the day I have several things already planned that I want to do. So I am on a mission today. ⠀⠀ I’m going to do something that is fun and makes my heart happy. Hint: a bubble themed birthday party for my little gran Hazel who is turning one. ⠀⠀ I’m going to work on a secret project that has me super excited. ⠀⠀ I’m going to paint something in my Pocket Journal. ⠀⠀ I’m going to plan out my day tomorrow because there is lots to do. ⠀⠀ And I’m going to clean my studio. There’s an upside to what is happening out there in the world and it’s called togetherness. I don’t mean the crowds of malls or airports or theme parks- I mean being together with the people that matter most to us. ⠀⠀ Sure we can’t go to Disney right now but we can sit around the table and paint together. We can play games and read books and be present for one another. We can eat dinner together and watch movies together. We can just be together. ⠀⠀ If nothing else, this world event is teaching me to be grateful. Grateful my college aged kids are healthy and safe at home with me, grateful my big kids and their little ones are nearby and safe and healthy, and grateful that we have such a tight knit clan that we are looking out for one another each and every day. ⠀⠀ I hope we can do our part to “flatten the curve” and help keep the work load of our local medical professionals manageable. We owe a lot to them and what they are doing for our communities.
