Halloween 2021 - Day 6 - Escape the Undertaker (2021)
Tumblr media
How many Cameos do you think Netflix had to buy to film all this?
Well, this was kinda obligatory, wasn’t it? All these different wrestling related things I’ve looked at over the years, I just had to check this one out. Think this might be the first time I’ve looked at something within the same year of it’s release during the Halloween marathon. I think it’s come up a couple of times during the Christmas ones, usually for those Christmas movies involving The Miz.
There’s been a few stories within the last few months surrounding Netflix and their move into the world of gaming. I think everyone had the same thing in mind on this, something along the lines of this where it’s a sort of ‘choose your own adventure’ type deal similar to Bandersnatch a few years back. The general thought seemed to be they wouldn’t be delving into producing games and they also wouldn’t be doing an ‘all you can eat’ offering of several titles that would be downloadable as part of your subscription ala Microsoft’s Gamepass. But, apparently they have launched a mobile app that has games on there including one about Stranger Things so maybe it is something they’re going to be moving into. Or maybe they’ll do more of these type of things and it’ll be a best of both worlds?
WWE is something I’ve majorly fallen off of in recent years. I’ve gone through several stages with them, way back in the late 90’s it obviously had that cool factor to it due to the Attitude Era where Steve Austin and The Rock were household names and everyone seemed to be talking about it. I had very limited access to it in late 99/early 2000, mostly from watching Smackdown on Sky One and whatever stuff was on Channel 4. I think not being so readily just added something to it, like it felt like a treat to be able to see it. For a while I got into a habit of just watching Wrestlemania, then Royal Rumble & Wrestlemania before jumping back in more full time when Chris Jericho came back around 2007 or so. I was watching pretty much everything they did for a good few years before slipping back to just the PPV’s a few years back but now I’m probably just back to the Rumble/Mania and, even then, I didn’t even bother finishing Night 2 of Mania this year. Everything just feels so inconsequential and the product is just in a holding pattern and has been for years now. Even something like Big E winning the title recently should have been a big thing but I’m pretty sure my reaction was ‘...okay’. When the show is good, it’s so so good. Something like Kofi winning the title was just amazing but with the highs come the lows and a few months later you have him getting punked out by Lesnar like it’s nothing, just kinda bums you out.
I’ve mentioned the New Day a few times there and they’re one of my last links to the company now. I’m trying to wean myself off even checking results and highlights on YouTube but will religiously check out their podcast, even if that’s in spite of the product. Just them being themselves is entertaining enough outside of even being WWE Superstars. They have the kind of personality that can pull this off, they have that light hearted, fun side that mixes well with something that is kinda inherently cheesy.
So, what is this exactly? It’s an interactive movie in which the New Day descend on Undertaker’s mansion in an effort to take away the elusive urn, much fabled throughout WWE history as this powerful item capable of controlling the Undertaker. Why they’re doing this is a little vague outside of them just wanting to combine it with the power of positivity to become even more powerful. Guys, you’re already like 10 time tag team champions, and the longest reigning ones at that, how much more powerful can you possibly get?
You know what’s weird? They have this compilation talking about how The Undertaker is so great and what a legendary figure he is but one of the voices is Pat McAfee. Now, I like me some Pat McAfee but surely these two were of different eras. They’re using voice clips as if McAfee is calling Undertaker matches but that’s clearly never happened. Maybe there’s a thing about them using old clips after all that Jesse Ventura business? You would have thought that’d be written in contracts now though that they can use clips as they please in the future.
Naturally New Day plan this daring heist at night too, even if Xavier Woods is very much against that idea. Hey, this is the perfect time to do it, it’s obviously when Big E is at his strongest. I mean, he is the leader of the Night People. Oh man, now I want Big E to cut a promo in that voice about how he’s going to take the urn. “We are the Night People and we cannot be held back. We will be free to frolic through the neighbourhood as we please, free to enter your house and steal your supernatural vessels.”
It kinda sucks that Big E is a little subdued during this as he’s under the effect of having his soul taken by The Undertaker and that drives the story, they have only a short time to try and free E’s soul before it’s taken forever. Him being the bundle of charisma that he is still comes through most of the time but there are moments when he’s selling being groggy or having some weird screeching in his head.
At least, I assume that would be constant throughout? That’s what happened to me at least. Everyone splits up at the start, I selected Kofi as he went upstairs, only to be interrupted at one point by Big E’s cries for help as we find him trapped in a throne shaped like The Undertaker’s symbol, you know the TX thing? Maybe it happens to one of the other guys depending on who you pick, I dunno though, that seems like a lot of extra shooting to have to do to cover every single possibility on the branching paths.
That’s the cool thing about this though, once you’re done you can go back through again and check out the stuff you’ve missed. There’s stuff clearly going on on the paths you don’t choose as it’s mentioned briefly when the guys converge again so there’s some replay value there. In fact, right at the very start Undertaker asks if you’re ready to try and take the Urn, to which you can reply ‘No’ and some fake credits roll. That would have made for a much shorter review had I left it at that.
Going through this, I’m wondering if I have deep, subconscious hatred of Xavier Woods or something because I managed to get his arm trapped in a crocodile (that’s an odd thing to take out of context), have him abducted and dragged through the floor by The Undertaker, and then finally get buried alive. Oddly, those last two are far more in context given the universe this product exists in. I probably could have saved him during that whole burial part as you’re asked to turn to the dark side and join with The Undertaker but I refused. Loyal to the literal soil.
And I only got to that part because it came up as part of the choices, having to face the fear of one of the three guys. At first I chose Big E but upon seeing him with his head trapped in a glass box and a spider walking into frame, I NOPE’d the hell out of there.
Tumblr media
Clearly this is all bullshit anyway. Everyone knows that Xavier Woods’ greatest kayfabe fear is Bray Wyatt.
Once you make it through that though, you’re faced with one final showdown with The Undertaker. If you want the urn, you’re going to have to go through him. He seems to have been working on some new powers since his retirement too:
Tumblr media
Something wrong, New Day? You came here prepared to fight The Undertaker and instead you found…A GOD?!
It is nice to see Undertaker making things again, remember when he used to make all those coffins for his opponents? Like Yokuzuna’s that was double wide and double deep.
This final showdown isn’t quite on the level of some of the cinematic matches we saw take place over the pandemic but we get the big spots; the double goozle, the eyes rolling back in the head, the dramatic sit up. And even Triple H’s sledgehammer makes a showstopping appearance to save the day because, even in a interactive movie in which he plays absolutely no part, Triple H is still going over.
I ended my game by smashing the urn with said sledgehammer, something Big E was only capable of because I had picked up the ‘POWER’ vial earlier in the game. Listen, I don’t play those adventure games but even I know you have to pick up every piece of crap you see laying around because you just know that fish skeleton you pick out of your bin in the first five minutes is going to be the plot critical item that wins you the game at the end.
So, a bit of a neutral ending I’d say, the guys made it out alive but I didn’t have anything to show for it. Maybe I’ll try again sometime and see if I can capture that prized possession.
Overall, this was good fun. If anything, I’m kinda surprised by the lack of fan service on show. Again, maybe there’s more in the paths I didn’t take but I only saw a painting of Paul Bearer (complete with OH YEEEEEEEEEEEEES sound effect) and a corpse with ‘Isaac Yankem DDS’ on the toe tag. Going by some of those cinematic matches, they normally like crowbarring this stuff in left, right and centre so maybe they weren’t as hands on with this production. Seeing this is just a reminder that it’s really strange that WWE doesn’t do more stuff like this. Like, they had that period of time when they were bankrolling movies and sticking their guys in but there should be more projects like this. Like CM Punk said that time, why not have The Cannonball Run but with all WWE guys? I think you could do more of these, maybe not so much something like a Dragon’s Lair thing in a match where you have to do QTE’s to avoid moves and what not, but you could have like a backstage thing where you’re interacting with the other Superstars before going back to your lockeroom to find Randy Orton has pooed in your bag.

Here’s The Thing About Sasha Banks vs Bayley: TakeOver Brooklyn
It was the 2015.
Women were steadily breaking barriers in every sport/field but, somehow, WWE had fallen behind. Their women’s division was still labelled as “diva division”, a label many found derogatory as well as diminishing, and the small time offered for the women’s match was still considered a “bathroom break”. Despite the fact that many members of the women’s division were trying to push forward, there was an unmovable object standing between them and the recognition they desired.
However, growing underneath WWE was NXT, their developmental brand where women kept pushing the limits of the time they were given, the manoeuvres they were allowed to make and the words their were supposed to say. In that brand, women were actively showing that they could be more, do more and become more. And, as if the Universe had pulled the strings to make sure key people were in the same place to create the right time, it happened. The match that ignited a raging fire:
Sasha Banks vs Bayley. TakeOver Brooklyn. August 22.
Tumblr media
To celebrate the 5th anniversary of this history making moment, WWE released a documentary with backstage footage and interviews from both women, their trainer (Sara Amato), etc. Any fan of the duo already jumped to watch and if you haven’t yet, please do yourself a favour and watch it as well because it explains in first person why this moment was so special.
First we have Sasha Banks, saying they refrained from training the match beforehand because - besides not having enough time -, they were scared someone would see the moves they wanted to do and complain, which would force them to scrap them from their plan. If this doesn’t show you how the climate was at that age, look deeper. Women were supposed to have pillow fights and hair pulling contests for the entertainment of someone else. They were never supposed to be good at wrestling like the men were. Except they were better. All they needed was a chance to show. Even if it came in the form of rebellion.
Then we have Bayley, letting us in on a little bit of their mindset for the match. Both being fans of the sport since they were young - and ultimately having the same dream to become a WWE superstar - the duo wanted to make everyone in the audience feel the way they always did. Excited, at the edge of their seats, eager to know what the hell was going to happen next. And they achieved it by simply giving each other the match they felt the other deserved. The match of their lives, as Bayley called it.
There’s also a part where Sasha Banks explains the audience something that, for many, is the reason fans don’t connect with wrestling on the deeper level anymore: in ring psychology. Everything that is done inside the ring as to be careful crafted and thought out, even if its done on the spot. If the crowd is pulling you in one direction, its your call to decide if you give them the ride of their lives or kill the momentum. And Sasha knew that even with little rehearsal, she could trust Bayley that they would deliver as much story as they possibly could.
As you can see, this match is special for more reasons than one. It was a manifestation of a fire burning inside the hearts of the trainers, the dreamers, every woman who wanted to go higher. It was a liberation from all the shackles placed on the women’s division for years. It was a love letter from fans to fans, written with blood, sweat and tears, the way only someone who truly loved the art of the squared ring could do.
Yes, there have been more women’s matches that were good or perhaps even better than Brooklyn, but none has been as special. Because none has been brought to us through a series of events, of pieces, that were at the right place, at the right time. We’ve gotten obsessed with jumping the “first time ever” barriers that we forgot about the most important thing: why we were running the marathon.
And, undeniably, the clash between Sasha Banks vs Bayley wasn’t the start of this marathon but it was the breakdown of the first barrier. The realisation that the unmovable object stopping the growth of the women’s division could be surpassed after all. They only needed time. To show up and show out. The land of opportunities, as many call WWE, simply had to give them one. And just like that, history changed. Lives changed. The world changed.
It’s the year 2020.
Sasha Banks vs Bayley is listed as a number one reason for women to begin their wrestling careers because they delivered a new era to women in WWE. When the books are written, years from now, they will be immortalised as the dreamers who could. Because, as Sasha Banks said, “That’s the power of a dream. Saying it. It’s believing it. It’s doing it. And it’s chasing it. And letting you know that you can do it. It’s up to you. That’s your power.”

5e Frank West build (Dead Rising)
Tumblr media
(Screenshot of Dead Rising 4 - Game by Capcom)
“I’ve covered wars ya know.”
In an attempt to branch out my builds beyond D&D I had a look through my Steam library for other games with interesting characters. While most of the games I play have pretty broad characters (Killing Floor, XCOM, Void Bastards... btw play Void Bastards it’s good) I eventually came across Dead Rising and all I could think is... “Yes.”
Frank West! Forever charismatic journalist, amateur craftsman, minor wrestling star, major anti-government conspirator, and part-time zombie. For “just a normal dude” Frank is capable of some pretty extraordinary feats, going up against countless zombie hoards with nothing but his wits and the products you’d find at your local shopping center... Helps that he can drop kick all day long without getting tired.
GOALS
Anything’s a Weapon - The core appeal of Dead Rising is the ability to use anything you find as a weapon, which Frank obviously needs to do.
Duct Tape it or Die - While it was more of Chuck’s thing Frank borrowed the ability to craft Combo Weapons and does it quite well. And obviously the only reason he survived a day in Willamette was his ability to weaponize golf clubs, sandwich plates, and cartons of orange juice.
I am the Ultimate Best - Frank is no pushover in his own right with some WWE superstar smack-downs and the endurance to run a marathon without getting tired. Because the original Dead Rising was made before stamina meters were a thing.
RACE
Frank is amazingly just human, and while the ending of DR4 says otherwise we’ll stick with Variant Human for now. You get an increase in two ability scores of your choice: increase your Constitution and Intelligence. You also get a Skill of your choice and you should take Athletics to run through the entire mall all night long. You finally get a Feat: take Tavern Brawler for proficiency in Improvised weapons and some unarmed damage and increase your Constitution again. And take whatever language it really doesn’t matter.
ABILITY SCORES
15; STRENGTH - You need to be able to fight off a zombie trying to bite your face; being able to chuck them 10 yards is an added bonus.
14; CONSTITUTION - Frank takes a lot of damage in the Dead Rising games. Getting shot, run over, sliced up with a chainsaw, and receiving countless claw and teeth marks and still being able to march on takes a lot of hardiness.
13; INTELLIGENCE - Knowing how to attach chainsaws to a kayak paddle “safely” takes a certain degree of know-how, and you helped Isabella create a cure for zombism! But above all it’s a requirement to multiclass so...
12; DEXTERITY - Shrugging off a hoard of zombies trying to grab at you takes some evasive ability.
10; CHARISMA - Not extremely in-character (feel free to swap DEX and CHA if you want better roleplay but worse AC) but we unfortunately don’t need it for this build.
8; WISDOM - Jumping off a helicopter into a mall full of zombies wasn’t exactly the best choice, and I doubt I could call anyone who walks into a hardware store full of decapitated bodies “wise.”
BACKGROUND
Unfortunately there’s no Reporter background for 5e but thankfully Celebrity Adventurer’s Scion from Acquisitions Incorporated is pretty close to what we need. The main feature of Name Dropping will let everyone know that you’re Frank West, and that you’ve covered wars you know.
Replace the Performance proficiency with Insight but keep Perception to find the perfect shot. You also get two languages of your choice (pick whatever) and proficiency with a Disguise Kit to try on all sorts of clothes while surviving the zombie apocalypse.

THE BUILD
LEVEL 1 - ARTIFICER 1
We’re going to start this build off as an Artificer to get the ability to craft things as soon as possible. You get two skills from the Artificer list: take Investigation for some investigative journalism and Medicine to know what brand of orange juice to drink to cure all that ails ya. You also get an artisan’s tool of your choice and Smith’s Tools would be what you use to make most of your Combo Weapons.
You also get Magical Tinkering which lets you pick up a grab bag of random stuff from various stores. You can touch a tiny, non-magical object with your tools as an action to give it a variety of effects that are listed in the ability’s description. The effect last indefinably but you can have a number of them equal to your Intelligence modifier.
Speaking of Intelligence modifier that’s what we use for our Spellcasting. You get two cantrips of your choice and while you’ll get the ability to swap them out later on start with Mending to duct tape any of your weapons if they’re going to break and Light to turn your camera’s light on. But feel free to choose whatever cantrips you think will help and since Artificer’s get a lot of choice with their spellcasting I’ll just list all the cantrips and how I’d reflavor them for Frank:
Acid Splash could be you throwing a bottle of something nasty at the zombies.
Create Bonfire could be a Molotov.
Dancing Lights could be a toy helicopter or something similar providing the light.
Firebolt is a gun.
Frostbite or Ray of Frost could be a combo weapon with a toy gun and a fire extinguisher, chilling your foes.
Guidance or Resistance is a fatherly mentor slap on the back for good luck. <3
Mage Hand could be a drone, or alternatively one of those grabbing-claw toys that Nintendo used to make. Similar idea with Thorn Whip.
Magic Stone... chuck some shit at the enemy like you do in MvC.
Message could be a walkie-talkie or a cell phone.
Poison Spray is bad don’t use it.
Prestidigitation is your grab bag of stuff from the toy store.
Shocking Grasp or Thunderclap could be you weaponizing your camera flash.
Spare the Dying is emergency medical care.
Can you tell I like Artificer? Because I really like Artificer. Anyways you also get two spells of your choice: Cure Wounds will let you or an ally guzzle some life-giving OJ and Catapult will let you grab something heavy and chuck it at a hoard! But much like with the cantrips Artificers are prepared spellcasters so you can choose your spells at the end of every long rest, giving you the ability to choose what weapons you want at the start of the day.
LEVEL 2 - BARBARIAN 1
Quickly bouncing over to Barbarian for two reasons. The first is to get Unarmored Defense equal to 10 + your Dexterity and your Constitution. We can still use Medium Armor (and I’d argue you probably should use that currently) but while the knight armor is a post-game unlock and you usually wear a leather jacket (leather armor) you can skip the padding and let your muscles protect you. The other reason however is for Martial weapon proficiency - you need to use everything you can find and Frank swings a katana as well as a baseball bat.
But you also get Rage which lets you scream up at the heavens about the government and get some work done. While raging you have advantage on Strength checks and saving throws (both of which are needed for grapples), do extra damage with strength weapons (including your fists from Tavern Brawler!), and resist bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage. It lasts for 1 minute but ends early if you end a turn without attacking someone or getting hit. You can also end it as a bonus action which you might need to do because you can’t cast spells while it’s active, so no OJ while you smash faces. You can Rage twice before having to take a long rest.
LEVEL 3 - ARTIFICER 2
Back on the Artificer train we finally get our Combo Weapons, or rather our Artificer Infusions. You know 4 infusions and can have 2 active at a time. You can choose which infusions you want at the end of a long rest so pick-and-choose what you need to fight the local psychopath.
For your Known Infusions pick the following:
Enhanced Weapon lets you stick some knives on the end of a broom to make it do more damage.
An Enhanced Arcane Focus meanwhile lets you improve whatever fire-spitter someone might be using to make it spit a little more fire.
An Alchemy Jug lets you carry around a variety of drinks (or mayonnaise) to mix in a blender for some juices and cocktails.
And the Pole of Collapsing from Xanathar’s Guide to Everything can actually be used by you as a weapon effectively since you have improvised weapon proficiency from Tavern Brawler. A 10 foot quarter staff is nothing to scoff at, and you can do a good Zero impression!
Truthfully though Artificers have a huge list of items they can choose from and I’d suggest taking whatever infusions your team asks for that would help them. The strength of Artificer lies in its versatility, and while Frank’s mostly alone in Dead Rising don’t let the Survivors in your party go unarmed.
LEVEL 4 - ARTIFICER 3
3rd level Artificers get their Artificer Specialty and Alchemist is perfect for someone who makes combo cocktails as well as combo weapons.
Truthfully though the reason we’re going for Alchemist is because it’s the only one that doesn’t have a summon. The new Armorer subclass also works but that serves more for if you want to play as Exo-Suit Frank.
As an Alchemist you can craft an Experimental Elixir after a long rest with a set of Alchemist’s Supplies (which you also gain proficiency with.) You’ve got six possible cocktails to make: Healing is self-explanatory, Swiftness lets them run faster, Resilience makes them harder to hit, Boldness lets them hit a little harder, Flight lets them... fly (talk about fizzy lifting drinks!), and Transformation lets you get your zombie on with the Alter Self spell.
You get one after a long rest but you can craft another one by spending a spell slot of first level of higher. It’s up to DM’s interpretation if you can do this while raging but since it’s described that you make the elixir “magically” I’d argue against it. That, and you need some time with the blender to make juice.
Also on subject of spells you get Healing Word to shout some words of encouragement to your allies and Ray of Sickness to shoot them with the B.F.G and make them puke their guts out. You also get another spell slot and Grease lets you throw a bottle of shampoo on the floor to make your enemies slip and fall.
You also get The Right Tool for the Job which lets you quickly pull together any Artisan’s tools you might need. You need an hour to make the tools (which can be done over a rest) and they last until you use this feature again. Can’t find a maintenance closet? Just make the stuff on the fly!
LEVEL 5 - ARTIFICER 4
Grabbing an Ability Score Improvement or rather a Feat since that uneven Strength score is bugging me: take the Athlete feat with an increase to Strength so you can run after the truth or away from a hoard.
You can also prepare another spell like Identify, so you can now exactly what you’re taking pictures of.
LEVEL 6 - BARBARIAN 2
Now that we’ve got our combo weapons and our cocktails it’s time to learn some wrestling moves. Level 2 Barbarians get Reckless Attack, giving yourself Advantage on attacks with Strength weapons but giving the enemy Advantage to hit you. A piledriver might get the job done but it does leave you wide open.
You also get Danger Sense, giving you advantage on Dexterity saving throws against effects you can see. Makes sense since you can dodge bullets if you see them coming but can still get outplayed by your protegee.
LEVEL 7 - BARBARIAN 3
3rd level Barbarians get their Primal Path and Path of the Totem Warrior is perfect for anyone who wants to bear hug their enemies. You get Spirit Seeker to cast the Beast Sense and Speak with Animals spells as rituals because this is meant to be the “naturalist” Barbarian but what we’re really here for is the Totem Spirit. You’re more than welcome to choose Bear like I know most people will but the most in-character option would be the spirit of the Eagle. Zombies have disadvantage to hit you if you run past them while raging and you can also Dash as a bonus action while raging, letting you run through a hoard of zombies and only suffer minimal damage. You can also Rage one more time before needing a long rest, adding up to 3 times total.
LEVEL 8 - BARBARIAN 4
4th level Barbarians get an Ability Score Improvement, and how about we finally get those wrestling moves? The Grappler feat gives you Advantage on attacks against enemies you grapple and lets you use your action to try to pin your opponent. If you do both you and the creature you’re grappling are restrained until the grapple ends.
LEVEL 9 - BARBARIAN 5
5th level Barbarians get an Extra Attack so you can combo two hits instead of one. You also get Fast Movement which increases your movement speed by 10 as long as you aren’t wearing Heavy Armor. The Megaman suit isn’t exactly aerodynamic...
LEVEL 10 - BARBARIAN 6
At level 6 Totem Warriors get Aspect of the Beast and the aspect of the Bear is perfect for anyone who wants to lift a zombie over their head and swing them around. Your carrying capacity for combo weapons is doubled and you have Advantage on Strength checks to push, pull, lift, or break objects. Technically this doesn’t include grappling and technically you can’t pick up people that you’ve grappled, but if you have a cool DM this would totally be the feature to let you chuck a zombie at another zombie. And an extra use of Rage (adding up to 4 times total) will definitely help with that zombie chucking.

LEVEL 11 - ARTIFICER 5
Now that we’ve got all the WWE we need it’s time to improve our combo weapons. 5th level Alchemists get Alchemical Savant which lets you add your Intelligence modifier to any spell that heals or does acid, fire, necrotic, or poison damage. Speaking of which you now get access to second level spells, and the Alchemist list gives you Flaming Sphere which lets you kick a burning trash can at your enemies, and Melf’s Acid Arrow lets you chuck a Queen at an enemy’s face and have them sting them a bunch.
LEVEL 12 - ARTIFICER 6
6th level Artificers get Tool Expertise, letting you double your proficiency bonus with any tools you know how to use. You can also prepare another spell like Pyrotechnics, letting you pop firecrackers in a zombie’s face to either blind them or use the smoke to cover your escape from a psychopath. You can also make two Experimental Elixirs are the start of the day instead of one.
But most importantly you learn two new Infusions and the number of Infusions you can have up at a time increases by one: Radiant Weapon finally lets you weaponize your camera flash and use your reaction to try to blind someone that hits you. Cloak of Elvenkind meanwhile makes it easier for you to sneak around and take pictures of military men talking about covering up the zombie outbreak. The government; it’s always the government...
LEVEL 13 - ARTIFICER 7
7th level Artificers get Flash of Genius. If you or one of your journalism students are in a jam you can use your reaction to add your Intelligence modifier to an ability check or saving throw, and can do this a number of times equal to your Intelligence modifier. Speaking of which...
LEVEL 14 - ARTIFICER 8
8th level Artificers get another Ability Score Improvement and we’re not getting Intelligence and are instead getting Constitution for more health and better unarmored defense.
You can also prepare another spell and you can’t go wrong with Heat Metal. Get a barbecue lighter and stick it in a zombie’s face!
LEVEL 15 - ARTIFICER 9
At 9th level Alchemists get Restorative Reagents. You buff your juice mixing power so the drinks give temporary hitpoints equal to 2d6 + your intelligence modifier, and you also carry some Zombrex with you to cast Lesser Restoration a number of times equal to your Intelligence modifier. Lesser Restoration won’t cure a zombie infection but I’m sure it can delay it for 24 hours.
You also get 3rd level spell slots now and as an Alchemist you always have Gaseous Form and Mass Healing Word prepared... I have no reason why Frank can turn into a cloud of gas: is he a vampire? Is it nanomachines? Are we giving a regular guy the ability to cast spells? Yes.
LEVEL 16 - ARTIFICER 10
10th level Artificers get Magic Item Adept, letting them attune to 4 magic items at once and letting you craft common and uncommon magic items in a quarter of the time using a quarter of the gold.
But more importantly you get two more known Infusions (and one more prepared infusion) and it’s finally time to fix that Intelligence! The Headband of Intellect sets your Intelligence score to 19, and the Gauntlets of Ogre Power do the same to your Strength. It’s not perfect but you’ve always been rough around the edges.
You get another cantrip so I’d suggest grabbing Firebolt for a backup pistol, but with the Headband of Intellect on your head you can prepare three more spells!
Elemental Weapon will let you turn a weapon into a +1 weapon and make it deal an extra d4 acid, cold, fire, lightning, or thunder damage.
Haste lets you speed up your combos with some X-Factor.
And bouncing back to level 2: Rope Trick will let you open up a bathroom so you can save and take a break.
Note: If you’re starting at level 16 (for some reason) and want to give your character a better stat array an updated stat distribution will be posted after this build goes live.
Tumblr media
(UMvC3 screenshot compilation by kiraDaidohji on DeviantArt)
LEVEL 17 - ARTIFICER 11
At level 11 with Artificer you get access to a Spell Storing Item. When you finish a Long Rest you can touch a weapon or one of your infusions to put a spell of first or second level into it as long as it takes an action to cast, even if you don’t have the spell prepared. Whoever’s holding it can use their action to cast the spell using your spellcasting modifier, and if it requires concentration they concentrate on it instead of you. They can cast the spell a number of times equal to twice your Intelligence modifier (so 8 times if you’re wearing the Headband of Intellect.)
I’m not going to tell you what spell to put in the Spell Storing Item - look through the spell list yourself or search online for the best spell for the job. An Artificer’s strength is versatility and I can only do so much themeing without playing your character for you. (Pro tip though: Blur is god tier if you can give it to a Fighter or someone else with high AC who can concentrate on it.)
LEVEL 18 - ARTIFICER 12
12th level Artificers get another Ability Score improvement: cap off your Constitution for maximum hardiness, AC, and Constitution saves. Last thing you want is to lose concentration on a spell and then lose your liquor afterwards.
You can also prepare another spell such as Revivify to quickly stick a hot dog in someone’s mouth and bring them back from the dead.
LEVEL 19 - ARTIFICER 13
13th level Artificers get 4th level spell slots and Alchemists get Blight and Death Ward always prepared. Zombify an area, or alternatively stop an ally from going down to zombies. Or yourself: you going down to zombies would suck too.
LEVEL 20 - ARTIFICER 14
Our capstone is the 14th level of Artificer for Magic Item Savant, allowing you to attune to up to 5 magic items and use them regardless of any restrictions the item might have.
But most importantly you get more Infusions and it should be mentioned that you can replace old known Infusions when you level up: replace your Gauntlets of Ogre Power with a Belt of Hill Giant’s Strength which is objectively better in every way. You can also make Bracers of Defense to further increase your AC and... hell, why not a Ring of Protection too? But once again I have to recommend you listen to your party for what they want you to make: don’t hoard your Infusions or the OJ.
FINAL BUILD
PROS
Won’t Stop until I’m Dead - For my first tank build on this blog Frank is a remarkably good tank. Maxed out Constitution with Barbarian levels means your health will easily go over 200, and Unarmored Defense combined with Bracers of Protection and a Ring of Protection can put your AC close to 20, and you can still wield a two-handed weapon.
You think you’re better than me? - You’re not the only one on the team who can be awesome with this build. You have a lot of utility spells and can help the team survive with your elixirs. Just remember the crafting recipes for juice.
Crislip's Home Saloon - You can use any weapon you get your hands on, including the kitchen sink. No matter the class or race restriction you can use a weapon. Even if you’re unarmed Tavern Brawler lets you grab whatever you find and make use of it, or resort to your fists if it comes to it.
CONS
Wrestling is Fake - Grappling isn’t exactly practical; neither are improvised weapons. A lot of the features that we grab are done entirely for the sake of roleplay, and you’d be far better off taking more practical Feats or more ASIs.
PP - This build is subpar until level 16 and only really reaches its true potential at level 20. While it’s great to theorycraft these types of builds I know that most campaigns don’t reach level 20.
Grrrrrrr - Rage is nice but it’s tough to use it in this build. Not only does it stop you from casting spells or concentrating but you’ll lose your rage if you don’t get hit or don’t hit someone else.
But we all start out somewhere kid. Fight the good fight, save the civilians, take good pictures, and maybe someday you’ll be in a war someone else covers. And be sure to drink healthy orange juice and pass up on the whisky - the last thing you want is to puke in the middle of a combo.

Fighting with my family
Based on the youngest DIVA champion; Paige. Fighting with my family tells the story of the Bevis family and their journey from being an unknown local wrestling family to having Saraya ‘Paige’ becoming a global wrestling sensation.
When I was little, I remember watching wrestling almost religiously with my dad. I remember we’d watch the Simpsons marathon on FOX 8 before watching WWE. This film reminded me of the wrestlers my dad hated and loved. The amount of times he’d remind me that wrestling was fake even though I never believed him.
Watching this definitely felt like I was a little girl all over again.
I stopped watching wrestling in late 2006/early 2007,I don’t remember a lot of the female wrestlers though I do remember all the males. I think I’ve seen AJ wrestle and possibly Paige, though I could probably spend all day listing the male wrestlers that I do remember.
This isn’t about the male wrestlers, this is about one female who not only followed her family’s dream but also hers.
Fighting with my family shows almost everything from the W.A.W team (The Bevis family wrestling company),siblings versing each other while their parents are mc’s of the match to showing what it’s like being part of the N.X.T and training to be the next wrestling superstar.
This is an incredible movie, yes at times the pacing can be slow but that’s expected when it comes movies based on true events. You have to watch the boring to understand the end.
Unfortunely it doesn’t show all of Paige’s matches, it just shows her roots and the night she is crowned the youngest DIVA champion as well as her training to become part of the wrestling family.
It’s great to see a movie shine a light on female wrestlers, it’s greats to see a movie that show the story of the underdog and it’s great to prove a point to my younger self.
Fighting with my family is a must see for any wrestling fan.
I guess that’s only thing wrestling has for them; it’s not just a tits and ass show, this is pure entertainment for the masses, showing the everyone gets a fair chance until they step into the ring.

Sugar rush
Inspired by@wwe-screenshot-storytelling
*Eun*
Today was a relaxing day while it's was.
I was just watching YouTube videos as I was drinking tea and as I was dad sat next to me "I'm heading out for a few minutes, can I leave you on your own?" He asked as I pause my phone "I don't think so, I'll just call Xavier and the other two" I say as he kisses my head and gets ready.
*five minutes later*
As I was getting down some snacks I heard a knock, I opened it to see the new day and Tyler "Eun!" The all shout as they hug me, as we all settled Xavier got out his PS4 and his god of war game "oh my god, you actually got it" I say as he pretended to flips his hair "uh of course I did" we all laugh as dad walks out "ok have fun kids, Eun be good" he says as he kissed my cheek and leaves the room, once he was gone we all began to play a whole lot of games.
*2 hours later*
After at least a hour of games Tyler, Kofi and E had to go as they had things to do "oh fine then me and Eun are gonna have a marvel marathon without you" Xavier says as they all roll their eyes at him and wave at me "bye guys".
As we watched the avengers, ant man and doctor strange we laughed, cryed and screamed together and while we were watching civil war AJ called.
*call mode*
E: Hi AJ
A:Eun run no, while you still can
E: .... Why tho?
A: code: SRS (sugar rush Shinsuke)
*call ended*
I turn to Xavier in horror as he looks at me "what?" I open my mouth only to say "code SRS" I say and he looks at me in the same expression I gave him "what do we do!?" He starts to panic till i slap him "you run while you still can and tell as many superstar as possible, do you remember the last time? , We had to tire him out with two hours worth of dancing, and that's not gonna happen again" I say as he nods.
As he was gonna leave he gives me a salute "good luck solider" he says then he runs shouting "CODE SRS THIS IS NOT A DRILL, RUN WHILE YOU STILL CAN!" Then that was when I got my phone a speaker and waited for dad to come back.
*ten minutes*
I was hidden under the counter as I was gonna get out I heard dad sing which made me wanna dig a hole, then I played the music which he danced to.
*later*
It's been an hour and as I was now behind a couch he finally passed out, so I grabbed a pillow, a blanket and placed them on dad then I grabbed my phone and texted everyone that it's clear, that was when AJ walked in "oh thank god, he's down" I nod and look at him "let me guess, he ate a lot of cheery flavoured lollies" he laughs "you know your dad better then I do".
*later that day*
Dad finally wakes up and as he did he looked at me "what happened?" I glare at him "how many times do I have to remind you, quit having sugar rushes" I say as he laughs "how long did it take now?" I shake my head "two hours, now go eat a fruit salad" I say as he gasped "are you calling me fat!" I smile "no, I just don't want you to have another rush" I laugh as he kisses my head.

Aiden English’s one man choir recital marathon
Sister Abigail!Bray cut promos on every single person in the building
A Hell In A Cell match between Michael Cole and JBL
James Ellsworth striptease
Daniel Bryan teach Kurt Angle how to discipline his wrestlers for the entirety of Smackdown
Another “This Is Your Life” from Alexa
Erick Rowan and Luke Harper try to explain their new gimmick in character

The week in review:
Raw 10/19 NXT 10/21 NXT UK 10/22 Smackdown 10/23 Hell in a Cell 10/25
Tumblr media
Raw:
Tumblr media
I’m here to give Alexa credit once more for making me give a shit about the Fiend. I do like his entrance, especially without a live crowd.
What a visual... them standing together hand in hand.
I love that they kept the monitors set on the graphics for this segment. No offense to the audience, but seeing them would’ve ruined this.
Amazing transition from Fiend and Alexa to the next segment/match. Major points.
Tumblr media
Still a vicious elimination to Lacey by Natalya.
I intend to take this title match as seriously as wwe has - not within a football field of giving a shit. I know how this entire angle ends anyway (preemptive welcome back, Queen) but let’s watch it through. See how this face turn worked out for Lana.
Asuka really is insanely fast, I’ll give her that.
Great rollup attempt by Lana (shades of Nattie/Alexa), great counter by Asuka into the Asuka Lock, and great job to Lana for grabbing the ropes. Points.
I’m sure this is all rehearsed, but Lana obviously puts in the work. Do I think she’ll ever be a singles champion? Absolutely not, but at least she isn’t complacent.
Tumblr media
Is it the tables? Is that what led to Lana turning face?
This was good for Asuka. This was good booking. She didn’t look like a chump giving Lana offense, and she looked both strong and smart post-match. Solid.
Tumblr media
By that logic, ShaNia owns NXT’s division as well. Just saying.
Really wish they’d nix the “Mandy” intro.
Stop I never wanna hear Peyton’s theme again, plz.
So they really never did explain why Peyton and Lacey became a thing? Mk. They seem like genuine friends, it’s just too bad they aren’t a compelling tag team in the ring. Would much rather watch Sexy Muscle Friends, ngl.
Hi I like Riott Squad and have no problems with them theoretically being in this match, but why the fuck are they still here lmao. Go to SD.
This better get longer than 10 mins, there are way too many women here for y’all to rob them of time.
It’s nice to see more women give a shit about tag team wrestling/becoming a cohesive unit.
Lacey just cuz you can do a moonsault off the apron, doesn’t mean you should. That was dicey. Fine, but dicey. There’s a reason Charlotte goes up to the top turnbuckle when she does it to the outside (not that I’m suggesting that incredibly high risk spot but I’m js)
Wish Lacey wasn’t so wooden. Wish she was more trusting and flexible like Charlotte.
I’d bet anything Mandy and Dana actually could suplex Nia. Let them try.
Good break up by Shayna. Protect Dana and Mandy’s finisher. Also that was a WICKED knee strike by Mandy.
Everyone’s gonna get a move in now huh. Le sigh.
NICE interrupt again by Shayna, girl with the good timing.
Fair ending. How long was that? 5 mins to the second lmao. Mk, wwe. Mk.
Tumblr media
Welp Alexa is officially on Firefly funhouse. Good. Now we get to blur some lines and have a bit more fun with her character.
Highlight: Asuka looking like a dominant champ without squashing Lana
---
NXT:
Tumblr media
Rhea Ripley #1 in nxt, these are the facts. She’s literally gone through them all. Throw her up to the MR, lesgo.
Watching her handle Charlotte and Piper is so impressive. Beast.
Tumblr media
“Gone against Bianca Belair and Shayna Baszler,” so got squashed by Bianca and Shayna lmao. Hey, everyone’s got a role I guess. I remember when Alexa was enhancement talent that did a 450 splash and blew glitter all over the stage.
I don’t understand how Ember was wiped out after doing a mere roll off the ropes. It seems like a work since Jessi didn’t react and continued on as if she scored some offense (she didn’t) but that was a nasty landing on Ember’s lower back. Weird.
One count off an uppercut bahahaha
“You done messed up now,” Ember exclaims, after flipping off a fucking snapmare. I liked her better when she had no personality and just wrestled amazingly.
Is Ember a heel now? She’s acting like a heel. Why is she doing submissions? Why is she talking so much trash? Why is she so arrogant? Not a fan.
A springboard back elbow drop? Intriguing, Jessi. Intriguing. Points.
Jessi was too quick for Ember’s (now slow) setup into her codebreaker out of the corner. I’m gonna watch Charlotte vs Ember from 2019 after this, Ember was a lot quicker and cleaner - also cuz I miss Charlotte.
Yeahhh Ember used Jessi’s hair to pull her head back so she could do a crossface. She’s either a garbage babyface, or a heel.
Tumblr media
Welp Dakota just turned babyface. Jeeze she be looking fine too. 10 points.
Dakota should be mad. She bumps like a motherfucker for every person she faces, and she made Ember’s botchy moves look amazing. Sucks she had such a stinker against Io, but there’s no way Ember should be rated higher than Dakota rn.
Interesting to note that Dakota came out on her own, as opposed to bringing - or even sending - Raquel.
Tumblr media
Why does Xia have to win? Is there a kf contract that’s riding on her victory? Why is a random ass match against Kacy the biggest match of her career lol
Also this interviewer is gorgeous. Eyebrows on fleek, beautiful eyes and flawless hair.
*The Garganos prepare to Spin the Wheel* No.
Tumblr media
Love Kacy’s speed. Always a joy to watch in the midcard.
Oh holy shit Kacy won, I did not see that coming. Where we going with this Xia stuff?
Xia gonna single handedly wreck both Kacy and Kayden?
WHY IS RAQUEL OUT HERE? What the fuck did Kacy and Kayden do to Raquel lmaooo
Commentator said Raquel sees Rhea Ripley in everyone she looks at. I say that’s the weakest explanation ever. Y’all just trying to find any reason to give her screen time, and this ain’t it.
“She’s sending a message to Ripley,” RHEA DON’T FUCKING CARE ABOUT THESE BITCHES. Also she’s like 3x the size of all of them lmao what?
“And next week? At Halloween? Havoc?” Girl stay backstage with your promos.
Tumblr media
I don’t know wtf the wheel is, but I absolutely loved that segment with Io.
She’s such a special attraction to me. I miss her when she’s not on, and she’s so under saturated that I never get tired of seeing her.
Highlight: Segment with Io

NXT UK:
Tumblr media
Man I really like Nina’s theme song.
After seeing last week’s fucking wrist lock marathon, this aggression is such a breath of fresh air. Not really much of a match, as it a brawl... but that’s perfectly fine lol.
Ahh Nina’s a runner? Interesting, I wouldn’t have guessed that.
Not a fan of Amale’s boots with her gear. Pressing stuff, I know.
Lol thought Nina was about to do a dis-arm-her. Man, I miss Becky.
Nina is a bit awkward with her transitions, I’m noticing.
Beautiful landing of the back body drop by Nina. Practically a swan dive.
Amale did such a lackadaisical pin attempt, and then could barely muster the strength to kick out of one. Ma’am isn’t the worst, but with as green as she is, she should be limited to 3 min sprints.
Seems to be a popular complaint I have with UK, they get gassed insanely easy. wwe needs to build a pc over there or something.
Final Act is a really weak finisher, but considering the speed, I will give points for the way Nina holds her opponent’s neck forward. We like to see performers protecting their partners from getting whiplash.
Tumblr media
Love Nina’s voice. Love her whole shtick tbh.
She wants Piper? *sigh* okay. Should’ve just done a tournament to determine KLR’s next opponent, but whatever.
Highlight: Nina’s backstage interview
---
Smackdown:
Tumblr media
lmfao Bianca’s reaction to being slapped. Ahhhh she’s funny.
Jeeze fucking tossed Zelina across the ring.
oof that speed by Bianca after flipping out of the hurricanrana. Whew.
Bianca straight threw Zelina into the air just to punch her in the throat lmao.
So this match was literally just “watch [Bianca] shine now” aye rep those lyrics, girl.
Tumblr media
Confession: sometimes I fangirl over Bayley’s demeanor. She got BDE and you know what? Good for her, good for her.
Points for the chair, Bayley.
“[Sasha is] an ungrateful brat” you know... kind of accurate.
Tbf Bayley, Sasha’s name kind of is bigger than your title, cuz she’s kept herself as an A+ superstar for like 4 years without holding gold. That deserves respect and recognition. That’s a woman keeping solely her name relevant without even being champion. Now in all fairness, I think all 4 of the horsewomen are up to that standing now, but let’s give credit where it’s due.
Sasha deserves to be champion in a meta sense, this is a fact, but man her character is so unlikeable. Like Bayley is a coward and an absolute tool but she still comes off as more genuine. A face turn for Bayley will be so easy. Not asking y’all to rush it wwe, but I’m just saying.
“Just give me the title back and we’ll talk about it,” Bayley says, as if she won’t grab that shit and bolt out of the arena.
Oh that was such a good set up to the spot with Bayley caught upright in the chair. I saw that screenshot months ago, but watching it be set up makes it so much better.
Ma’am I feel like being physically forced and coerced into signing a contract automatically makes it null and void, but hey this is your universe, what do I know.
Vicious - Bayley falling over with a fucking chair wrapped around her neck. Whew what a bump.
“Go help her Cole” LMFAO legit the last person in the company that would come to Bayley’s aid. Good line, Corey. That was a great promo and segment. Mega points.
Highlight: Go home segment for Bayley & Sasha
---
Hell in a Cell:
Tumblr media
Kind of a weak video package for this feud, ngl. They didn’t bother with the Raw women’s championship, didn’t bother with 2019, Raw 2016/2017, nxt... Closest we got were a couple 2 second clips/screenshots.
By definition, this feud has to be one of the biggest disappointments in recent memory. It had the potential to blow Becky/Charlotte out of the water, and didn’t even enter the same stratosphere. Shame. This is a perfectly fine feud in a vacuum... until you remember it’s fucking Sasha and Bayley. Okay I’ll stop beating a dead horse.
If Sasha were a real babyface, she’d drop that awful Snoop remix.
Sasha looks amazing. Love the contrast of Sasha wearing white and Bayley wearing black. Gonna miss Bayley’s old gear though.
Love Bayley spray painting 1-0 on the chair, since we all obsessed over Sasha’s shitty record ahead of this match lmao.
This feud just never picked up that mountain of tension Becky and Charlotte had at Evolution I’M SORRY.
Why can’t everyone do a headscissors takedown as fast as Sasha can.
Such an innovative way of utilizing a table and the cell to deliver a meteora. POINTS FOR SASHA *applause*
So I like the concept of Sasha rolling under the table and pushing it up into Bayley, but the landing of the table near Sasha’s head made me uneasy. I like the concept of Sasha rotating her body on the apron before jumping straight into a meteora against the cell, but the way she landed against the LED was awkward. The ideas are there though.
Cool watching Sasha jump from the apron to scale the cell, then back to the apron, then jumping over Bayley onto the floor. She’s like a rabbit. I’m underselling this tbh, like 95% of the women in the company can’t do the things Sasha can do.
OOF at Bayley being dropkicked into the steps. What a landing.
At this point, I don’t even want to see a women’s hiac match unless Sasha’s in it, or at the very least has a hand in producing it. Ugh she’d be an amazing match producer, whew.
Ugly landing through the kendo stick onto the steps by Sasha. That’s a spot that would’ve received an audible gasp from a live crowd.
OOF a sunset flip powerbomb into the fucking cell. oof. rip Bayley.
OOF a sunset flip into the fucking chair. oof. rip Sasha.
Positive on Bayley’s botched kendo stick/tape spot: lends credence to how inexperienced Bayley is with handling weapons in kf, and Bayley did a great job vocally improvising - probably earned herself points backstage. A negative: what a disaster of a spot lmfao. Should’ve had it already created and ready to go beneath the ring, or used a broomstick/crutch for the spot instead. Having people handle tape mid match is stupid. Wasn’t Bayley’s fault, but the crowd would’ve shit all over that lesbireal.
If you’re a specified Sasha fan, you’ll probably deem this the greatest match of Sasha’s career, cuz my god did she look amazing in it (and she actually won) but if you’re not, I’ll tell you, they did not do a good job making Bayley shine at the end of her historic reign imo.
Sasha bout to have a breakdown. Good acting.
This match lacks cohesion. Very spotty, but most of the spots are fucking incredible, so it gets a pass.
I like the ladder on the chairs.
Sasha jumping off the set up ladder to do a meteora in the corner was nice. Sasha using a fucking Bayley to Belly onto the ladder was beautiful.
Sasha looking like she wants to cry. Man she’s amazing.
BEAUTIFUL counter out of the Bayley to Belly by Sasha; dropped Bayley into the chair to set up her Bank Statement inside the chair.
Mega points for that single chair being the center of their entire feud, as the rivalry began and ended with that chair. Bravo there.
That’s it, Bayley’s reign is finally over. This match’s review was hella long, but deservedly so. Extremely happy for Sasha. Took her 4 years on the MR giving people banger after banger before wwe trusted her with a legitimate title reign, but we’ve finally made it.
Highlight(s): Both sunset flips by Bayley & Sasha against the chair & cell, respectively
---
*hiac blew everything else out of the water by default thanks to Bayley vs Sasha, but both Raw & SD were very enjoyable to me this week as well.

Breaking News – The WWE has released Zelina Vega.
WWE has come to terms on the release of Zelina Vega. We wish her all the best in her future endeavors.https://t.co/RUebMGwBTA
— WWE (@WWE) November 13, 2020
Talk about your Friday afternoon news dump. Gone from the WWE Universe is one of its best personalities. During the first few months of the pandemic, it was Zelina Vega, Andrade and Angel Garza who we saw each and every show, multiple times a show, that carried the company through a tough time. Vega’s was reportedly very vocal in voicing her displeasure at the way the WWE has banned its superstars from benefitting on third party apps like Twitch for supplemental income. In Stamford, it’s either Vince’s way or the highway. And now, it looks like Vega has her bags packed to travel to another place of work.
It’s a brand new world and with AEW, Impact Wrestling, MLW, New Japan and Ring of Honor all out there ready to make a splash, it shouldn’t take long for Vega to find a new home after her non-compete clause is fulfilled.
It’s too bad that the WWE couldn’t find a way to use Vega correctly as her passion, in and out of the ring, combined with her talents and amazing good looks, not to mention an attraction to the Latin audience, should be a plus to any company. Now, here’s hoping they don’t punish Aleister Black the way they punish Lana when Rusev, i.e. Miro left.
As for the rest of the week around the WWE, the temperature is rising towards Survivor Series. It’s an odd PPV in that there’s no real build-up to the matches themselves other than the red brand vs. the blue brand for one night. RAW vs. SmackDown isn’t as sexy as last year’s “what will NXT do” against the major players. Now, don’t get me wrong, the matches that night will be good, if not very good. It’s just that there are no consequences to the outcomes of the matches as each side will just go back to their brand-specific storylines after Survivor Series.
Survivor Series – Updated Card:
The Undertaker’s Final Farewell
WWE Champion Randy Orton vs. Universal Champion Roman Reigns
Raw Women’s Champion Asuka vs. SmackDown Women’s Champion Sasha Banks

Clearly, RAW is broken. And yes, I mean broken in more ways than the 8 tables that Lana has been put through by Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler. That one storyline is a microcosm for what’s going on during Monday nights. It seems like the WWE is more interested in getting Lana through yet another table to somehow make her sympathetic to the audience, it’s not happening BTW, than giving us a compelling story with the RAW Women’s team for Survivor Series. They threw away a championship match between Asuka and Nia Jax (again!). They had Shayna Baszler and Jax backing down at one point to Dana Brooke and Mandy Rose (why?!). All this to show us no one likes each other and to put Lana through a table. No sense at all!
They used Riddle wrestling twice in an hour just to show us how dysfunctional the men’s Survivor Series team is. I’m expecting Styles to be kicked off the team so that Drew McIntyre can join in. One of the few bright spots on the 3-hour marathon was the backstage talk between Sheamus and McIntyre.

Mustafa Ali vs. Ricochet was amazing, as expected. Unfortunately, it got buried in the course of the night beset with problems. For now, RETRIBUTION seems to be nothing more than a mid-card angle. Seems to be a waste of Mia Yim and Dominik Dijakovic.
I have no clue why Angel Garza is still being wasted on the Bachelor gimmick. No one cares. Give him a night with Charly Caruso and be done with it.
Alexa Bliss says goodbye to Nikki Cross for The Fiend. Expected but kind of a throwaway.

Randy Orton kisses off his tag team partners in the main event, leaving The Miz and John Morrison to get destroyed by McIntyre and The New Day. You know that Orton wanted no part, especially now that he’s got to defend his WWE Championship against McIntyre Monday night in the go-home show to Survivor Series (can you say The Fiend interference anyone?).
All in all, not a great show for RAW, something we’ve become accustomed to over the past few months.
NXT
RESULTS
NXT North American Championship Match: Leon Ruff defeated Johnny Gargano to win title
NXT Cruiserweight Championship Match: Santos Escobar defeated Jake Atlas to retain title
Raquel Gonzalez vs. Xia Li went to a no-contest
Candice LeRae defeated Toni Storm
Timothy Thatcher defeated Dexter Lumis
NXT Tag Team Championship Match: Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch defeated Breezango to retain titles
From top to bottom, NXT continues to show exactly why it’s everything RAW is not.
Surprises, sense-making angles and in-ring action that’s second to none in the company. That’s what we got Wednesday night.

— WWE NXT (@WWENXT) November 12, 2020
Starting right off with Johnny “Wheels” Gargano using the Spin the Wheel, Make the Deal contenders match to choose Leon Ruff as his opponent, it was a night of fun. Gargano’s own move backfires immensely as Ruff upsets him, with Damian Priest’s help, to become the new North American Champion. Then, later in the night, it’s Gargano’s better half, Candice LeRae getting the better of Toni Storm with the help of her friend, Miss Scream, Indie Hartwell as they move the feud with Shotzi Blackheart one step ahead.

— Pat McAfee (@PatMcAfeeShow) November 12, 2020
In the main event, Pat McAfee returns to lead what he calls the best four-man group in wrestling history to a successful tag team title defense. Sure, McAfee’s claim is in gest Four Horseman fans, but the fact that he says it is magnificent. Not only do Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch, along with Pete Dunne, retain the titles, but also take it to Drake Maverick, who tried to help out Breezango. Nice punt on Breeze to by McAfee himself to close the show.
In the ring, Santos Escobar vs. Jake Atlas was impressive. LeRae vs. Storm was just getting going in a match that I think we’ll see again down the road. Timothy Thatcher vs. Dexter Lumis was physically as heck too!

Now, I could do without the burlap sack over Lumis’ head that I think will lead to a blindfold match (I hope not!) between Cameron Grimes and Lumis, but at least it makes sense for Grimes to get revenge from Halloween Havoc. It seems like everything done Wednesday night made sense.

Tommaso Ciampa vowing more change to the NXT locker-room was a beauty of a backstage promo. Raquel Gonzalez beating up Boa after the no-show of Xia Li is intriguing as have no idea what anything between Li and Boa and a new mystery man means for any of them.
All in all, a very good show considering those missing – Finn Balor, who returns this week to talk about his next NXT Championship challenger and The Undisputed Era. And oh yeah, Karrion Kross could be coming back anytime soon!
SMACKDOWN
RESULTS
Intercontinental Championship Match: Sami Zayn defeated Apollo Crews by count out to retain title
Otis defeated Dolph Ziggler
No Holds Barred Match: Rey Mysterio defeated Seth Rollins
Survivor Series Qualifying Match: Liv Morgan defeated Natalya, Chelsea Green & Tamina
Unsanctioned Match: Drew McIntyre defeated Jey Uso
Before we get into the show itself, I ask this. Shouldn’t the final chapter between Seth Rollins and Rey Mysterio have been built up a bit instead of just announcing it an hour before its onset Friday night? Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy the final chapter is here because the storyline has been overdone, but if you’re going to have finality, make it seem bigger that what it was portrayed.

Count me as one who would rather see Drew McIntyre vs. Roman Reigns. The moment that McIntyre stepped into the SmackDown ring to open the show with Reigns, it seemed BIG. Loved the back-and-forth and a bit of shooting going on too. Roman needles Drew about blowing the audition when he flubbed his lines. Drew shooting back about Reigns not being there for WrestleMania when McIntyre was. Reigns firing off that he doesn’t watch RAW, no one does! Really good stuff.
Sami Zayn is downright hilarious and creative as hell! Loving the latest from the I-C Champion. The match was what it was against Apollo Crews. It did what it had to do: keep the title on Zayn.

— WWE on FOX (@WWEonFOX) November 14, 2020
Could we get Carmella and Bayley teaming up to take on Sasha Banks? Sure feels that way.
Is Chad Gable about to build his own stable with the Alpha Academy. The quick vignette was worth more than his match with Dolph Ziggler. It’s got me intrigued to say the least and it has a Cobra Kai feel with maybe Kurt Angle coming back to play the John Kreese role.
A triumphant night for the Mysterio family & @WWE_Murphy! What a way to end the final chapter on #SmackDown! pic.twitter.com/7gI8XW0be8
— WWE (@WWE) November 14, 2020
Even without the buildup, Rollins and Mysterio put together a well done No Holds Barred Match. It was a little slow to start but heated up. Nice save in the middle by the pair with an almost botched powerbomb from the top rope through the table. Murphy aligning himself with Mysterio and attaching Rollins was a no-brainer too! Love and lucha libre conquers all, even the Messiah! It’s all about the moments in the WWE and that one paid off with a handshake and a family hug. I hope Murphy now gets a chance to show how good he really is without Rollins. But first, he’s going to have to face Seth trying to destroy him.

I’ll say it once, I’ll say it a thousand times. The “I’m entitled” look for Natalya is not a good one. Especially when she does nothing with it but lose. Welcome to the Blue Team Liv Morgan. Does Chelsea Green have inside track to the team through Adam Pearce?

Give WWE credit. They’ve made Jey Uso into a main event player. It’s another Friday night where Uso is looking good, this time against McIntyre. I liked that it still went to a clean finish even with the Reigns distraction. Kudos as well to the end where Roman asks Drew if he understands and tells him to get him a championship and we’ll see you at Survivor Series. Good foreshadowing there? I’m in if they do. Either way, that potential match already has more heat than the scheduled Reigns vs. Randy Orton contest.

Good to see the Tribute to the Troops coming back on FOX. It’ll be taped at the WWE ThunderDome and broadcast on FOX during NFL Football Sunday either prior to or after the local market’s game on December 6th (3pm or 4:30pm). It was amazing to see back in the day when the WWE would go overseas to perform in front of the troops, but after not having a show last year, the show returns in a different, COVID-19 safe version.
RIP Eddie Guerrero. Hard to believe it’s been 15 years. Long live Latino Heat!

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ of sports: Misfit teams that thrived when put together
Tumblr media
We’re looking for “The Guardians of the Galaxy” of sports.
The Guardians of the Galaxy were relative unknowns as characters when they were introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe back in 2014. The success of the franchise inside of the bigger picture of the rest of Marvel’s Infinity Saga gave birth to one of the most beloved casts and set of characters despite skepticism of how things might work when they were introduced to us.
All week at SB Nation, we have been taking a look at the MCU and the impact it has had on the world at large and some of the things that have bled over into all of sports. Here, a panel of our writers are going to take a look at some of the teams that mirror the ragtag collection of characters thriving once they found each other.
The 2003-04 Detroit Pistons
Perhaps it is just the Detroit in me (spoiler alert: it absolutely is), but there is no better representation of throwing a bunch of pieces together and crossing your fingers that it works than this group.
Ben Wallace was the heart and soul of the team, but had bounced around the league for a few years and was undrafted. Chauncey Billups was the No. 3 overall pick in 1997, but was on four different teams before landing in Detroit in 2002. Rip Hamilton was part of a trade that sent Jerry Stackhouse, an All-Star scorer, out of Detroit. Tayshaun Prince was a star at Kentucky, but had a hard time cracking the rotation early in his Pistons career. The final piece was Rasheed Wallace, who was a fiery personality despite having all of the talent in the world.
The Pistons were a formidable team in the East before adding the latter Wallace to the mix, but he was the final piece to a puzzle that saw them make a run through the playoffs and then cast the final blow in the Kobe Bryant/Shaquille O’Neal Los Angeles Lakers dynasty. The Pistons rode an elite defense and contributions from all every direction to take down the Lakers in the 2004 NBA Finals, winning the series 4-1. They came a Game 7 short of going back-to-back, losing to the San Antonio Spurs in 2005. The 2006 Pistons would finish with a regular season record of 64-18, but lost in six games to Dwayne Wade and Shaq’s Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals. That would be the last time the Pistons’ starting five shared the court together, as Ben Wallace would leave for the Chicago Bulls ahead of the 2006-07 season.
— Anthony Broome
The 2013 Red Sox
The 2013 Red Sox really had no business being as good as they were. Boston was coming off a very not nice record of 69-93 and finished last in the division during the absolutely disastrous one-year experiment with Bobby Valentine as manager in 2012. With new manager John Farrell at the helm, the Red Sox had some really great pieces to work with — namely superstars in David Ortiz, Shane Victorino, Jacoby Ellsbury, Jon Lester, and Dustin Pedroia — but had some questions marks coming off an utterly horrific season.
The Red Sox pretty much cruised to an AL East pennant, but the season was a real rollercoaster. The squad donned a “Boston Strong” patch after the Boston Marathon bombings, and Big Papi’s emotional “THIS IS OUR F*CKING CITY” speech served as a rallying point for the team and city.
At one point in September, Mike Napoli (basically Drax, if we’re being honest), Mike Carp, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia all hit grand slams over the span of a week. Not home runs, grand slams.
Oh and don’t forget the beards. Just about every member of the team grew distinct beards, and it became such a thing that the team adopted “fear the beard” as the official slogan heading into the postseason.
Every time it looked like they were out of a fight, they’d come through in the clutch.
youtube
The Red Sox would go on to beat Tampa Bay, Detroit, and St. Louis en route to their third World Series title in 10 seasons. With huge contributions from guys like Napoli, Carp, Saltalamacchia, Jonny Gomes, David Ross, Brandon Workman, and Will Middlebrooks, how can it be anything other than a rag tag success?
— Caroline Darney
The Rock & Sock Connection
Look, I get it, some of you are probably foaming at the mouth because I dared to mention a WWE tag team, but there’s very little that better typifies a “misfit team” than when The Rock and Mankind teamed up and became tag team champions in 1999.
The pairing was perfect. You had The Rock, stalwart babyface (good guy) teaming up with the misunderstood Mankind to form a classic Odd Couple amidst the WWE’s “Attitude Era.” Not only were they two of the best, most-popular wrestlers in the world at the time, but they had natural charisma and chemistry together.
Wrestling fans knew the team wouldn’t last. These were two of the top singles competitors in the company working as a tag team, but it lifted both of them. It allowed The Rock to be his classic, smack-talking self, and Mankind to almost be the straight man — which was a hilarious departure for someone whose character was largely comedic.
The duo were dynamite in the ring, and electricity off it. Nobody can forget the classic “Mr. Rocko” promo, in which Mankind gifted The Rock with his own, personalized sock puppet, that looked like it was air brushed on a seaside boardwalk. Everything that was good about WWE at the time was typified by The Rock & Sock Connection, and they are my pick for the greatest misfit team of all time.
— James Dator
The 2005-06 Phoenix Suns
From Bright Side of the Sun:
Some how, some way, this group of misfits still won 54 games and finished 1st in the Pacific Division. They would match up against Kobe (who had 35.4 ppg that year...the 9th best scoring season in NBA history) and the Lakers in the First Round of the 2006 Playoffs.
The Suns would go down 3-1 to Los Angeles, and it felt like all hope was lost. Yet, in true superhero fashion, they battled back to win the series in seven games. This was in large part to another Guardians-esque misfit, Tim Thomas (we’ll allow him to be Yondu in this scenario)
— John Voita, Bright Side of the Sun
Team North America
Team North America is, was, and always will be my favorite hockey team. They played together for only six games total, but the mark they made on hockey is one that will not be forgotten. This team was the brainchild of NHL General Manager Gary Bettman leading into the 2016 World Cup of Hockey and included 23 players under the age of 23 from the United States and Canada.
This means that current stars like Nathan MacKinnon, Connor McDavid, and Jack Eichel were all playing on the same team. It was the first official look at the Toronto Maple Leafs 2016 first overall pick Auston Matthews whom many had not been able to watch while he was playing in Switzerland.
Team North America was everything traditional hockey analysts hate — they had the confidence of youth without having earned their time, they played a run-and-gun offensively aggressive style, and they were endlessly cool. Also, the logo is awesome. This was a snapshot of what the NHL was about to become, a transition from the second dead puck era into a future of fast, skilled hockey.
Tumblr media
Photo by Brian Babineau/World Cup of Hockey via Getty Images
Alas, this team wasn’t as successful as they were legendary. They won two of their three pre-tournament games but when it came time to the actual World Cup of Hockey, the did not advance past the first round with a record of 2-1, losing to the only team that mattered in the tie breaker to advance. The finished the tournament in fifth place but will forever be first in the heart of everyone who watched these young bucks usher in the new age of hockey.

The Weekend Warrior’s Top 25 of 2019
This was such a good year for movies. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. The amount of good or great movies and the amount of variety among the better movies made it hard to know where to cut off my annual top 25 and to which movies to give “Honorable Mentions” instead. As has always been the case, I make an effort to see the better movies two or sometimes even three times before deciding where they place, and that was the case with most of the movies below.
There have been quite a few years where I haven’t rewarded a single movie a 10 out of 10, and this year, there are FOUR! Even so, 2019 will forever be known as the year I started to appreciate and even love the music of Elton John and George Michael, although only one of those movies made my list.  Just a reminder that this is a list of my favorite movies of the year and it’s based solely on my own opinion. If you don’t like one of the movies on my list that’s fine – it’s your prerogative – but if there’s something you may have missed and you check it out based on inclusion here and you like it, then please let me know!
Also, if you just want to peruse everything that I wrote this year, you can find all of it at my Weekend Warrior Blog.
25. Wild Rose (NEON)
Tumblr media
I’d be remiss if I ignored this wonderful film directed by Tom Harper that premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2018 but finally was released this year. It stars Jessie Buckley as a Glaswegian country singer, a single mother freshly released from prison who just can’t get her act together, even though she is a terrific singer with a real passion for country music.  Buckley is such a revelation in the role, and I just loved the songs written for the movie, and I’m not even remotely a fan of country music. (So I guess that’s a third type of music I began to appreciate this year.)
24. Fighting with my Family (U.A. Releasing)
Another terrific and nearly forgotten film this year was this wrestling biopic about WWE superstar Paige, as played by Florence Pugh (she’s gotta be this year’s actor of the year, right?). Written and directed by Stephen Merchant and co-produced by Dwayne Johnson, Paige’s story really is pretty fantastic, as you follow her trying to make her way in the WWE where she’s nothing like the other women wrestlers. The movie was warm and funny and not at all what you’d expect from a WWE Films movie, but it’s definitely the studio’s finest work to date.
MY REVIEW
23. Plus One (RLJE Films)
One of the nicer surprises out of Tribeca this year was this twist on the rom-com by filmmakers Jeff Chan and Andrew Rhymer, starring Jack Quaid and Maya Erskine as two best friends who decide to attend all their weddings together to act as wingmen to help each other hook up. It’s a plan that works out well at first but starts to falter once they realize they might have feelings for each other. It’s classic rom-com territory but the movie is hilarious (Erskine is an absolute gem!) and you’re on board even when it goes to somewhat predicable places. (Some of the wedding speeches given by Jon Bass, Beck Bennett are particularly funny.) This is a movie that I’m bummed I haven’t had a chance to see a second or third time, as I’m sure it might be higher up on my year end list if I had.
22. Spider-Man: Far from Home (Sony)
You can’t argue when the fans are right but when Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios came on board to produce Spider-Man: Homecoming, it actually was pretty good and you had to have confidence they could make a sequel just as good or better. There was a lot to love about this one including the decision to take Spider-Man out of New York, which makes sense when you realize all the space-faring he’d been doing in Infinity War and Endgame. Then there was Jake Gyllenhaal as “Mysterio,” a fun and twisty take on the classic Spider-Man villain that also allowed director Jon Watts to play with some of the ideas introduced in Avengers: Endgame, while also giving Samuel Jackson’s Nick Fury more to do than he has in many movies. I can’t wait to see what Tom Holland’s Spider-Man gets up to next!
MY REVIEW
21. One Cut of the Dead (Shudder)
The Japanese META zombie movie that’s been winding its way through the genre festival circuit for most of the past year, it’s an amazing bit of mind-fuckery where you think it’s merely about a zombie attack on a low budget movie but as we learn after the first 30 minutes, there’s a lot more going on than what seems… and that’s about all I can say, because it’s the kind of movie that’s more amazing when you go in not knowing what’s happening. And yet, you probably should know that there’s a lot more going on since the first 30 minutes on their own aren’t very good.
20. The Irishman (Netflix)
Tumblr media
Don’t get me wrong. I really liked and appreciated Martin Scorsese’s reunion with De Niro and Pesci, as well as their pairing with Al Pacino to tell the story of the man responsible for the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa, but just not as much as other movies. Granted, Scorsese continues to be one of the best filmmakers working today but it did feel like he and De Niro were returning to familiar and popular territory to try to claim back their cinematic throne. I guess it worked, because The Irishman is a great film, and heck, I’d watch it a thousand more times on Netflix if I didn’t have other things to watch.
MY REVIEW
19. Little Women (Sony)
I just wrote about Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Louisa May Alcott last week, and I’m probably more surprised by most about how how much I loved this movie, maybe even more than Lady Bird. Those performances by Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh and Timothée Chalamet just makes this film so wonderful at times and heartbreaking at others. It’s always been a great story but Gerwig found an original way into it that made it a wonderful follow-up to Lady Bird.
18. Sword of Trust (IFC Films)
I’ve been a Lynn Shelton stan for a number of years now, mostly from Your Sister’s Sister, but I generally like much of her work, whether it’s all improvised like that one and Humpday, or scripted like her pairing with Jay Duplass for Outside In. This one was really special, as it paired her with her Glow star Marc Maron and a trio of really great actors to bounce off of, including Jillian Bell and Michaela Watkins (from the almost equally great Brittany Runs a Marathon), as well as Jon Bass. The interaction and improvisation between these four actors as they deal with a sword from the Civil War with a controversial past makes this one of Shelton’s more entertaining movies, deserving of its placement in my year-end list.
Thoughts from My Column
17. Good Boys (Universal)
You’ll notice that I have quite a few comedies on my Top 25 this year, and that shouldn’t be a surprise for anyone who has read my reviews over the years. I love comedies and I love to laugh, and this high concept comedy about three 6thgraders, one of them played by Jacob Tremblay, just cracked me up so much. No surprise that it’s from the mega-comedy-kings Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who produced this movie from the team of Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, who are best known for “The Office” and a number of not-so-great comedy hits like Bad Teacher. Like Booksmart (see below), this one involved a fairly simple all-in-day quest by the three main characters but it led to some absolutely hilarious situations. Totally reminded me of myself when I was their age. Can’t wait to see what Brady Noon and Keith L. Williams get up to next as they’re amazing.
16. Late Night (Amazon)
While Mindy Kaling’s feature film might have come out of the whole SJW virtue signaling movements that surfaced post-Trump, her movie loosely, based on her own experiences working on the staff at a late night show, was a beautifully insightful look into the business. It starred Emma Thompson as veteran late night host Katherine Newbury, who is forced into diversifying her writing crew by hiring the less-than-experienced Molly (Kaling’s character). Over the next few months, Molly tries to make her way through the ins and outs of writing for late night, dealing with sexism and even some racism, even from Newbury.  Unlike the recent Bombshell, this is a comedy and both Kaling and Thompson were both terrific, to the point that it was a bummer that Amazon decided not to give this any sort of awards push by sending out screeners with some of their other movies.
MY REVIEW
15. Peterloo (Amazon)
Tumblr media
While I’ve been a fan of filmmaker Mike Leigh almost as long as I’ve been writing about movies, I always seem to be in the minority when I’m not as into some of the movies my fellow critics love (like Mr. Turner), but this amazing movie about the political climate of England in the 16thCentury and the violence spurred on by a peaceful protest is an amazing bit of writing/directing by the British master. This is another movie that I wish got a lot more attention because the writing and cast were so good, and it just seemed to come and go without much fanfare. A real shame.
MY REVIEW
14. Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood (Sony)
I probably won’t have too much to add about Tarantino’s movie beyond my earlier review, but this is a movie that I liked quite a bit the first time and even more the second time I saw it.  It’s just a fun portrait of Hollywood in 1969 through the eyes of a filmmaker who was six years old at the time. The performances by Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie drove this film about what it was like trying to make a living as an actor in the climate of the late ‘60s with peace and love… and brutal murder in the form of the Manson Family. And yet, Tarantino found a way to give the Sharon Tate story a happy ending. Go figure.
MY REVIEW
13. Pain and Glory (Sony Pictures Classics)
Pedro Amodovar has been a bit hit or miss in recent years, so seeing him reunite with his regulars Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz to write his best (and possibly most personal?) screenplay to date made Pain and Gloryone of the year’s nice surprises. Despite doing a lot of questionable movies in recent years, Banderas once again proved his worth as an actor, giving a performance as a has-been director that hopefully will get him his very first Oscar nomination.
12. First Love (Go West USA)
Tumblr media
Another filmmaker whose work I’ve loved but who has also made some real dogs is Japan’s Takashi Miike. His latest take on the crime genre ended up being one of his best movies in twenty years. It may even be better than Audition, which celebrated its 20thanniversary this year. It’s a simple story of a young Japanese boxer who encounters a young woman who has been sold into sex slavery, but in helping her to escape, they get caught up in a gang war that includes some of the craziest characters to ever appear in a Miike movie. But as the title says, this is a love story more than anything, and that helped Miike prove that he has not gone soft, but still knows what it means to be human.
11. The Two Popes (Netflix)
I just wrote about this dramatic two-hander, written by Anthony McCarten and directed by Fernando Meirelles (City of God), last week, after putting it off for far too long. (It’s hard to get inspired to write reviews of movies when you’re not being paid to do so, let me tell you.) It’s an amazing film about the relationship between Popes Benedict and Francis, as played by Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce. While you wonder how McCarten researched a movie between two very private public figures, neither of whom have written about this meeting, this is another great film from Netflix this year that’s proving that the studio is not going away and it’s going to produce quality films as great as the big boys.
10. Avengers: Endgame (Marvel Studios)
It shouldn’t be too big a surprise that a Marvel movie has made my top 10, as there have been others, like last year’s Ant Man and the Wasp, Iron Man, Thor, Guardians of the Galaxy. Oddly, only one of the three Russo Brothers movies made my list – Captain America: The Winter Soldier – but with Avengers: Endgame, they managed to create a culmination of everything that’s come before but also made a Marvel movie that is the most like the Avengers comics I love, even to the point of having various members going off on their own missions. I’ve seen this movie three or four times now, and I still love some of the big moments like Captain America stating, “Avengers Assemble!” (finally) and this more than made up for Infinity War, which was good but not great.
9. Waves (A24)
A rather late addition to my year’s best is the new movie from Trey Edward Schutts, which delivered another amazing performance by Kelvin Harrison, Jr, who was also fantastic as the little-seen drama, Luce. The energy Schutts gives the movie with the use of music is fantastic, but it’s just an interesting character portrait that halfway through, throws you for a major loop before switching gears to follow the characters played by Lucas Hedges and the equally talented Taylor Russell. And then on top of that, you have Sterling K. Brown giving a moving performance as Harrison and Russell’s characters, who just doesn’t know how to deal with what’s going on with his family. There have been some great teen coming-of-age dramas over the years but Waves is one for the ages.
8. Book Smart (UA Releasing)
Tumblr media
Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut has been compared both favorably (and sometimes unfavorably) to a female Superbad, but I think a better comparison would be a modern-day Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Like Good Boys, it was a single night movie where two best friends (Beanie Feldstein, Kaitly Dever) decide to spend their last night in high school rebelling against their overly studios nature by going out to a party and have fun. What happens to them and the crazy characters they interact with makes this one of the funniest movies of the year. What was really amazing, besides the entire cast, was that I could watch this movie and see stuff that would have happened in my own high school days (which was more in the Ridgemont High days), and to see that high school just doesn’t change despite the technology and all the different standards and morals that come along.  Wilde is one filmmaker who I can’t wait to see what she does next and same for her entire cast. I’ve been saying since seeing this that I’d love to see Wilde do another movie with the exact same cast, all of them playing different characters, as I think we’ll see that these actors can do anything.
7. Yesterday (Universal)
Here’s a surprise for you all, but again, if you realize how many Danny Boyle movies have been in my top 10 over the years, you’ll know what a big fan I am of the Oscar-winning filmmaker. Teaming him with Richard Curtis for a high concept comedy where the world has forgotten the Beatles’ music and a young busker named Jack (Himesh Patel) who remembers them starts to make a career for himself by claiming the music as his own. I loved the lead, but it was especially his friendship/romance with Lily James’ Ellie Appleton that made me love this movie enough to put it in my top 10.
6. Marriage Story (Netflix)
While I really appreciated Noah Baumbach’s latest movie quite a bit when I first saw it at the New York Film Festival back in September, it was my rewatch on Netflix more recently that really made me appreciate what Baumbach has accomplished after nearly twenty years making movies. Granted, the movie might be seen as a bit of a downer, but you know what? Sometimes, I have to even out all the laughs and humor with something more serious.  Having a friend who went through a (far less litigious) divorce with a small child, I couldn’t help but thinking how much worse it could have been. As much as this was about Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson’s characters and the change in their relationship, it was a good lesson in how ugly things can get when lawyers get involved with Baumbach having a powerful trio in Laura Dern, Ray Liotta and the wonderful Alan Alda in those roles. This created a beautiful bookend to Baumbach’s earlier film The Squid and The Whale, based on his parents’ divorce, but this didn’t seem autobiographical as much as it showed the work of a mature filmmaker who has created his most personal and best work.
5. Knives Out (Lionsgate)
Tumblr media
Speaking of dysfunctional family relationships, Rian Johnson’s look at the death of a wealthy mystery author’s (played by Christopher Plummer) and how his greedy family might be responsible, as investigated by Daniel Craig’s “gentleman detective” Benoit Blanc and the author’s maid, played by Ana de Armas. Besides putting a clever a spin on the ensemble whodunnit typified by the work of Agatha Christie and others, the movie was insanely funny thanks to the cast assembled by Johnson, which was literally an all-star team doing some of their funniest work. Really, there wasn’t a weak link in delivering Johnson’s best screenplay to date, and I look forward to seeing if we’ll get another movie in this realm. As with most of the movies in my Top 10, this is a movie I could see repeatedly and get more out of each time.
MY REVIEW
4. Rocketman  (Paramount)
And here it is, the Elton John movie that made me a fan of Elton John’s music after nearly 40 years of mostly shunning it. What director Dexter Fletcher and star Taron Egerton did in telling John’s story though his music, essentially creating an original jukebox musical on screen was the perfect way to frame the music and story. A lot of people compared this to last year’s Bohemian Rhapsody– which I also liked, mind you – but however much work Fletcher did to finish that movie after Bryan Singer’s firing, this was clearly something he had a clear vision of from beginning to end. This is one of the few movies I’ve seen this year three times, and I’ve been going down the Elton John rabbit hole of music ever since.
MY REVIEW
3. Ford v Ferrari (20thCentury Fox)
When I reviewed James Mangold’s Le Mans racing movie, starring Christian Bale and Matt Damon, back in October, I gave it a 9.5/10, and then I saw it again in IMAX and for the life of me, I couldn’t figure out why I took off half a point. The movie is just about perfect.  This is such a great story and the way the action is framed by the relationship between the former’s Ken Miles and the latter’s Carol Shellby with all the other players in the mix just made the movie one that was extremely watchable. And boy, those racing scenes! I haven’t seen action that exciting in years and that includes some of the best recent action movies, including Baby Driver and some of the “Fast and Furious” movies.
MY REVIEW
2. 1917 (Universal)
Tumblr media
This was almost my #1 because it’s such a masterful achievement in all aspects of filmmaking that it also earned a rare 10 out of 10. Granted, I’ve been a Sam Mendes fan for many, many years, and he probably has had a few movies in my top 25 over the years, most notably with his second film, The Road to Perdition, which was actually my #1 movie that year. I’ve generally followed Mendes’ career with interest with only one or two movies just not working for me, but with just eight movies in 20 years, it’s amazing that it took that long for Mendes to be back in the Oscar conversation after winning for American Beauty. Frankly, I think this is unequivocally one of the best movies of the year between the screenplay, co-written with Kristy Wilson-Cairns, and the performances by George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman, making it a movie that’s a wonder to marvel at how they achieved such a powerful cinematic experience to behold.
MY REVIEW
1b. The Biggest Little Farm  (NEON)
Tumblr media
As with every year, I like to pick one documentary as my favorite and best of the year, but instead of deciding where it fares among the narrative features, I just make it a tie for #1. My favorite doc of the year was John Chester’s movie about show he and his wife Molly decided to move out to a farm and try to get it work fiscally despite tons of issues, some they could control, others they couldn’t. While I also liked Apollo 11, and I’m sure that will win the Oscar, the way Chester told this story was done in such a wonderful way that it was far more enjoyable and entertaining than most docs. (And as you know, I do LOVE docs!)
1a. The Farewell (A24)
Tumblr media
This should come as no surprise to anyone who has followed me on Twitter, where Lulu Wang’s China-set dramedy has been my profile picture almost since I first saw it in June – I’ve seen it three more times since then, each then having the same emotional reaction. Based on a story from Wang’s own life, it stars Awkwafina as Billi a poor starving New York artist who travels to China when she learns her Nana (the terrific Chinese veteran actor Shuzhen Zhao) was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Her family has decided not to tell Nana that she may be dying, but they all return to Mainland China under the guise of a wedding for Billi’s cousin, but she knows the truth and has to skirt around while trying to spend possibly her last time with her beloved Nana. The movie was emotional but also quite amusing and entertaining, really showing what life in China is like in a way that was far more personal and human than last year’s Crazy Rich Asians i.e. that was more fantasy than this movie’s reality.
Some More Thoughts
Honorable Mentions: Motherless Brooklyn, Les Miserables, Honey Boy, Long Shot, Toy Story 4, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (As I said above, it was tough to leave a couple of these out of my top 25.)
Top 12 Docs
Not going to write too much about all of these but this was a pretty fantastic year for docs, and if you have a chance to watch any of the below, I would jump on it, especially since some of them barely got a theatrical release.
1. The Biggest Little Farm
2. Apollo 11
3. The Cave
4. WRESTLE
5. Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice
6. Marianne and Leonard: Words of Love
7. Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am
8. 63 Up
9. Agnès on Varda
10. One Child Nation
11. Be Natural: The Untold Story of Alice Guy
12. Love, Antosha
I used to do a TERRIBLE 25 as a separate thing, but this year, I’m just going to list six movies, although a few of these I saw so long ago, I barely remember why they sucked so bad.
In fact, Jeffrey Nachmanoff’s REPLICAS was one of the first movies released in 2019 picked up by Entertainment Studios from TIFF the year before. It’s funny how much love Keanu Reeves got this year for John Wick: Chapter Three and other stuff, but everyone seemed to completely forget that he started the year with this stupid high concept sci-fi thriller about a man obsessed with bringing his family back from the dead.
Also, not many people saw Joe Chappelle’s AN ACCEPTABLE LOSS, which opened just a week after Replicas, but it was a political thriller starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Tika Sumpter that was so poorly written and so boring that I felt bad for Sumpter, who was giving her all.
I probably have said as much as much about Tom Hooper’s CATS as I plan to – you can read my review over at The Beat– but it’s also the most recent of this year’s bad movies, so it’s the freshest on my mind on how awful it was. I’m not going to pile on any further.
It’s been a while since I saw Tim Story’s SHAFT sequel/reboot, and as excited I was to see Samuel L. Jackson and Richard Roundtree back in the role, it’s Jessie T. Usher’s presence as John Shaft, Jr, meant to be the main running gag of the action-comedy that made it one of the worst movies of the year.
Another remake that really didn’t need to happen was this Neil Marshall remake of HELLBOY, and sure, maybe I was a bit biased, having loved Guillermo del Toro’s movies, particularly Hellboy: The Golden Army, but this just wasn’t a good movie as hard as it seemed to try. (You can read my review of that here.)
And yet, that wasn’t even the worst movie of the year. No, that would be Rob Zombie’s 3 FROM HELL, a movie so abhorrible that I couldn’t believe what I was watching. I called it the “worst movie of the year” back in September, and that sentiment didn’t change.
Before we wrap things up, here are some of my favorite records of the year. You may have heard of a few of them. Maybe not others? Most of them should be on Spotify.
1. Smiley’s Friends - In the Sixth Sense
2. Kevin So - S.O.U.L.
3. Pixies - Beyond the Eire
4. The Alarm - Sigma
5. Silversun Pickups - Widow’s Weeds
Best concert of the year? Easy one. Dave Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets with my buddy Jonathan Baylis when former Pink Floyd frontman Roger Waters shows up to perform one of the classic Pink Floyd songs! Possibly one of the best concert moments of the last couple decades!

That’s it for 2019... onto 2020!

John Cena Leads His Own Boy Band in Hilarious New Vodka Commercial
Tumblr media
Courtesy of SKYY Vodka
WWE superstar, actor, boy band heartthrob? It seems John Cena has added another line to his resume with a pair of new commercials for SKYY vodka's "Proudly American" campaign. In the first of the two, he stars alongside two clones of himself in a very Backstreet Boys-esque music video, and if you had strong opinions about his haircut earlier this fall, you're going to really explode over his look in this video.

The second commercial is a little more tame, and the thirty-second spot features Cena hanging out at a bar, getting fitted for a sharp new custom suit, and even running a marathon in a tutu (and sipping on a SKYY vodka martini, of course). It's all aimed at celebrating America's diversity and the people who make it great. Check it out below:

Much like his WWE counterpart The Rock, Cena has been branching out in recent years into acting and other work outside of the ring, so these on camera appearances are likely to become more frequent. But even with a demanding production schedule, he still finds time to get ripped and throw down, and he shows no intention of leaving wrestling for good. He recently debuted "The Sixth Move of Doom," called the Lightning Fist, before a packed house at WWE Live in Shanghai.
Rest assured, he's not a guy you'd want to pick a fight with.
