Quote
When I talk to MFA students, they always ask me, what should I read? If I read some of their poems, I might say, oh, you would benefit from X,Y, and Z, this poets work. I’ll always ask them this—which poets are being celebrated in your MFA program? Which poets are being pushed by your professors? And I say, Ok, you read those poets, but then you read the poets who are on the opposite spectrum of that aesthetic. Search those poets out. Search poets who are not being talked about in your workshop. Or even better, read the poets who are being dismissed in your workshop by your professors or your classmates. Read those poems. Do not rely on somebody else’s opinions. And I say, Don’t just focus on the contemporary. A lot of MFA students just focus on the contemporary. Read from different historical time periods, read translated work, and read from across the world.

Amanda Moline - Week 4
“On Twitter, President Trump slams ‘dishonest’ New York Times, Washington Post”
o   This article discusses President Trump’s tweets that followed Steve Bannon’s advice to the media that they should “keep (their) mouth(s) shut.” In three consecutive tweets, Trump makes the claim that the New York Times and the Washington Post are fake news. He makes the claim that their subscription numbers are dwindling, to which the New York Times fact checked, stating that their subscription and audience numbers are at all-time highs. This article regarding Trump’s tweets particularly angered me due to his lack of support for the media, as the media can often provide detailed, unbiased insight on current events.

“McCain Steps In to Ease Tension With Australia Over Trump Insult”
o   Australia pushed Trump “to honor an agreement to accept 1,250 refugees from an Australian detention center,” to which Trump angrily responded. On February 1, Trump tweeted about how “dumb” this deal is. John McCain stepped in by reaching out to Australia’s ambassador in the United States to let him know that we have “unwavering support for the U.S.-Australia alliance.” It’s clear that Trump’s comments affected Mr. McCain, as he made another statement stating the strong alliance between Australia and the U.S.

“President Takes to Twitter to Defend Hate Speech”
o   Trump used Twitter to threaten the possibility of taking away funds from the University of California, Berkeley, after violent protests on their campus. The article discusses reactions to this Twitter threat, including U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee of California, who corrected Trump by stating that “his empty threats are an abuse of power.” Though this article contains some bias, I found the discussion of Trump’s tweet, “If U.C. Berkeley does not allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a different point of view - NO FEDERAL FUNDS?” sparked interest in researching further on whether or not it is acceptable for the President to release statements such as this on social media.

“Trump Called National Park Chief Over Twitter Post on Inaugural Crowd”
o   After the National Park Service tweeted out comparison pictures of Trump’s inaugural crowd size versus Obama’s previous 2009 inaugural crowd size, Trump made a call to the director of the National Park Service. He asked why they had shared the post and to produce more evidence of the size of his inaugural crowd. Trump’s press secretary went on to insist that this was the largest crowd ever to witness an inaugural ceremony. This article shows the issues that may arise from a lack of support for President Trump, as he is quick to defend himself again negative tweets. I personally do not understand why the President would need to spend time defending the size of anything related to himself, let alone question others’ tweets.

“Trump takes to Twitter to weigh in on Women’s March, TV ratings for inauguration”
o   This article covers Trump’s tweet on January 22 in which he stated, “Watched protests yesterday but was under the impression that we just had an election! Why didn't these people vote? Celebs hurt cause badly.” This tweet regarding the Women’s March attempted to attack the many celebrities present at the event. He then goes on to tweet, “Peaceful protests are a hallmark of our democracy. Even if I don't always agree, I recognize the rights of people to express their views.” The article then discusses Trump’s subject change on Twitter to the television ratings for his inauguration, and the false facts that Trump provided.
