the difference in wording here is neat to me. vash says "alive," as you would for a person. wolfwood says "works," as you would for a machine.

i like the idea that OG ryo wasn't even in love with akira. satan was just so full of both love and fear that the moment he gained memories of a best friend he hadn't seen in months, he couldn't help but seek him out and make him his whole world

man. there's something about these two being forced to sit in this room and stare at each other, having a battle of wills, for more than eight months. they're both so desperate to win, there's gotta be like... a level of personal enmity to it that far surpasses even the enmity they've had since trigun volume 2. and yet, they're also very much the same. both people who don't really give a shit about themselves and only continue living because of knives. both trapped here by knives's orders.

we saw similar in the last volume, but i think this is a great moment showing vash's plant abilities being used to defend rather than destroy. this bit is a clear departure from the ways we (and everyone in the story including vash!) have seen his power before; even in the previous volume when he did things like stopping legato's bike and preventing rubble from falling on people, there was still the very real threat of him Blowing The Fuck Up. that threat is absent here

of course, that doesn't stop everyone in the town from seeing it as proof of his destructive potential. which it is. but at the same time it's more than that

(as a side note, i Love that he's sometimes called the devil. absolute fallen angel of a man)

devilmannies: part of devilman's tragedy is in akira losing his humanity and becoming more and more aggressive & battle-hungry. by the end of it he's barely himself at all, he practically exists to fight

zazie's dialogue here is interesting. when the word "independent" comes up, i've always tended to think of it in relation to the other plants. but zazie's comparison is of the twins' independence versus humans' dependence. it reflects the worms' unique perspective, and i feel like it also suggests their interest isn't necessarily in plants... it's in vash and knives specifically
