shin yoosung opens her eyes. everything's dark. did something go wrong? what happened to ahjussi? a message appears.

she takes off the connection goggles on her head, as lgy does the same, shouting at her that she overused her powers and broke the connection. they argue. is it because of sys overusing her abilites? lgy sending out too many messages? actually, why is his modifier a complete ripoff of secretive plotter? lgy gets really mad at that. they continue fighting until seolhwa's voice comes from a speaker in the access room. she'll fix it, so stop fighting and go outside. the device is incomplete, so both of them connecting at the same time is probably what broke it.

so, they're connecting through something like a vr headset? interesting

and what about sangah? she's still connected, in another room. wearing the goggles, she's been connected for 36 hours straight, watching as a constellation. on her screen is the scenery of the ruined national palace museum, where a beautiful incarnation was ordering others around.. and han sooyoung secretly searching around. unlike them, who have connected through some kind of connection goggles, she entered directly by sending an avatar. she had told them not to come along, but they couldn't just sit around and do nothing. so ysa and lgy have signed sponsor contracts with incarnations, and sys possessed herself.

kim dokja's company, when given the choice between a world where kim dokja exists and one where he doesn't, chose the latter option. they all thought it was a trap. in the same way he stayed on the subway, he's still away from them. maybe he had thought they wouldn't have made this choice, as the two children look out at the unfinished white landscape outside, like someone had just imagined it. a world that the oldest dream had never dreamed of...

it's been 6 months. a lot has happened. kimcom has launched another plan to get their squid back. yoo sangah, using the mandala's guardian's power, used her threads to search for the pieces of kim dokja's soul scattered throughout the worldlines. but there were way too many, so they decided to start with the fragments that hadn't been reborn yet. all of these fragments were pieces of kim dokja's story.

yoo sangah says. even if they collect all these fragments, it won't bring back the kim dokja they knew. collecting someone's footprints doesn't bring back the person who made the footprints. they all knew this. but lee jihye's reply,

"but if we don't do this, there's nothing left for us."

even if this is just how they mourn him, even if the kim dokja they know will never come back. like the days they waited for yjh in space, they wanted to continue their hope. so they continued. as the fragments collected, it began to move somewhere like it was being attracted to something. following it, they found a worldline. the 41st turn, the one that wasn't recorded in ways of survival, like the 0th turn

maybe kim dokja was there.

lgy asks, can they find him? sys says they can, she's already found one. "that's not hyung." "then who is ahjussi?"

shin yoosung and lee gilyoung, they 'know' kim dokja. his likes, dislikes, the foods he can't eat, his height, weight, age, the smile he makes when he sees them. maybe the kim dokja she knows doesn't exist anymore. but, when someone asks 'who is kim dokja', shin yoosung already knows lgy's answer. "hyung is someone who loves stories." and then they start arguing on if kdj likes sys or lgy's story better. during this, shin yoosung thought. in this world, conflict becomes a story. and stories are kim dokja's favourite. and since kim dokja loves stories, he must be watching them now. no matter what he looks like, as long as he's looking at this story.

shin yoosung will surely regain her star.

lee seolhwa's voice was heard through the complex's broadcast.

"he's back."

there's no way. kim dokja can't be back. so that means... someone grabs the mic. "gather around. i have something to say."

I love rereading your wall fic a) because it's brilliant and I would make a physical copy if I knew how to bookbind and b) i def get the sense that everyone who knows KDJ Respects if not likes him as a person and thinks he's competent (he absolutely is! this unselfaware man istg) meanwhile KDJ's Narrative-focused Anxiety Brain is constantly 3 seconds from a death spiral at All Times. Which is Relatable if nothing else! I plan to do a reread this weekend and I am super excited! 💜

I do agree with your assessment... I think that a lot of comedy comes out of the fact that KDJ's always trying to present himself as "normal boring guy" and he feels normal and comfortable when he perceives that as being others' perception of him... which actually it oftentimes is. You can see this in the few times he interacts with people who aren't KDJco and he sort of lets them fit him into what their idea of normal is without directly challenging it (you can sort of see this at the start of chapter 4). But then with his actual friends (aka members of kdjco) basically they think "ah he's regular" at first and then later realize "oh he's actually pretty cool." So taking HSY as a specific example, you kind of see her make assumptions about what KDJ's deal is based on what she thinks is "normal." And then you see how KDJ doesn't want to challenge that, because being viewed as "regular" is his defense mechanism, anything that threatens that is seen as negative and necessary to avoid to him, which includes a positive interpretation of his actions. So he eventually is able to relax around HSY just because she's rude and dismissive towards him as being boring and weird, which makes him feel comfortable. Then whenever the idea that she might value him comes up, it makes both of them uncomfortable because of that alskfjasf. There's also my interpretation of HSY having a certain difficulty expressing her emotions at face value, she's so actively suppressed love that about her <3.

Then you can see the situations where he's really uncomfortable or panicking are ones where he doesn't know for sure that they view him in this dismissive way. Especially with Yoo Joonghyuk he's trying to come across this way. Now, YJH's perspective on KDJ hasn't been explicitly said yet so I'll leave it up to reader interpretation, but I think in terms of what we can see from people like YSA and JHW, KDJ is self conscious about the way he presents himself to them because their favorable opinion of him threatens his self-perception. Like you say, I think this is really relatable to those feelings of social anxiety we all have... Often times trying to convince yourself that you are doing normal things and nobody minds and its fine is a bit hard, so writing KDJ in this version is just like an extreme version of that, haha.

TSP wanted to know about KDJ's mother when he had the memory recall as a ghost species too, but here I think they're reacting specifically to "that novel was all I had". (again, because i think they're the author)

Kdj's mom is the strongest reminder of the past "reality", and therefore interferes with the Fourth Wall the most strongly. Any sort of trauma can resurface it for him, but hers is the worst. Connections with the original reality hurt Kim Dokja...connections with the original reality break his immersion. We see the word "immersed" used a lot and I don't remember the contexts it is used in exactly, BUT an interesting thing to note is that it was used to describe TSP in the meeting with Persephone (though that can just be translation shenanigans so I'm not putting a heavy weight on that piece of info - also, 4W is a skill exclusive to him).

I don't really have anything conclusive to say, but "immersion" as a phenomena is interesting. My mind jumps to VR.

KDJ's views on life-taking are not this puritanical. Even for his mother to defend herself and her child against an abuser...there must be something else he's not telling us.

At this point, it already wasn’t a normal conversation between mother and son. This was why I didn’t want to talk to her. I knew what would happen when we talked. We knew too much about how to hurt each other.

but does he not consider that maybe putting it down on paper was cathartic for his mother as well? there's the consuming of a story as catharsis, yes, but it isn't just borne out of nowhere. somebody labored to write that all down, and that can be healing within itself as well. though from what little I've seen, his mother doesn't seem to really care, and is a cold enough person that sharing her story was just opportunistic. though that could be a trauma response within itself too. you get trauma and you get trauma and you get trauma

anyway, moving back to the present - to have had spectators cheering him on and showering him with currency for this past month while people are being slaughtered around him? holy shit. i cannot imagine the rage and violation that kdj is feeling right now.

I am so glad that we have YSA here. Because everyone has good hearts. but they are also so cagey and guarded and and angry and quick to retaliate but ysa is so kind. and she lets herself be vulnerable and it makes me cry T_T (in a good way!) she hasn't lost that vulnerability yet and I truly hope she never does. One more thing I want to talk about. The parallel ways that KDJ compares himself to YJH (the "character") and YSA (the "person") are so interesting to me. "I can't do this, I'm not the protagonist...I'm not a protagonist...I'm not Yoo Jonghyuk". vs. "Yoo Sangah is a real life protagonist. She always knows just what to do. The world seems to turn towards her..." etc. etc. Kim Dokja is constantly telling himself that "I can't do that, I can't be that" when he is already doing that, and more. He's this story's savior.

I like that we have somebody (HSY) offering a more jaded perspective even though I disagree with it. The reality is that YSA's perspective will be right sometimes and HSY's will be right others.

Oh SHIT. Is this the central disaster?

What motivates a disaster to come back and destroy their own home planet? I understand why they leave to destroy others - survival - but their own? What's the incentive? If their sole purpose is destruction, where do they even go when they're done? What's the incentive to even live?

Yoo Jonghyuk had attempted it several times in the mid to late regressions. The first thing he did was find Shin Yoosung and try to prevent her from becoming a disaster. He failed every time. No matter what changes were made to the Shin Yoosung in the present, the future Shin Yoosung would return in five days. Then she destroyed Seoul.
