This story from a reddit thread abt "why do dpairs stick together" has been haunting me btw. Especially the explicit acknowledgement that being nhl tier is being able to achieve 12 years of Learning Each Other in a couple of praccys

first of all let me start off by saying: love love love op having and sparking these types of conversations because even if this segment of the fanbase reach is small in comparison to the greater hockey world, its always good to think critically about the kind of content you’re engaging in. (especially for people who’ve come from or been used to engaging from more 2d fandoms, e.g. fictional, little ground in irl, this is a great perspective to help emphasize the differing nature of sports culture vs a regular fandom, where ur faves can at any moment be revealed to be problematic and quite easily at that).
personally, I do tend on the side of trying to spread out awareness regarding the problematic action revealed when it happens, and then afterwards avoiding engaging with anything. I personally don’t feel that it’s a super conscious decision — having new information added to my prior perception naturally changes how I would react to that player, and my online activity adjusts accordingly. for the players I do post (problematic or not), I tag them for ease of blocking for anyone who does feel uncomfortable seeing them. in general for me, it’s just good practice to tag since, due to the nature of sports, having a team or player’s tag blocked is also just a matter of do you want to see them. if your team beat mine in the playoffs, I probably won’t want to see them on my dash for a long time, nothing necessarily problematic about that.
honestly, there’s a lot of different ways to engage or think about a player given a problematic angle introduced to them, and I don’t rlly want to tell anyone how I think they should act lol. I think it’s really easy to get into the mindset of “if you post this bad person then you are also a bad person by transitive property” but frankly by the nature of how hockey culture operates it’s honestly unlikely that the players you like are going to be or have been any better. being able to evaluate what you stand for and how you feel, as a real person in the real world impacting your own decisions, is probably the best sanity check you can do. frankly it’s okay to feel betrayed bc the nhl sucks a lot sometimes. it’s also ok to take everything said here with a grain of salt.
Hey Hockey fans! I wanna do a bit of research for an infopost I'm considering making. So here's a genuine question because I've been thinking about it for a while: When a player, especially one you've admired for a while, is revealed to be someone problematic (bigoted, abusive, or just a questionable history in general), how do you approach that (Especially when it comes to fanart, fanfic and just... generally posting about them?). Approaches can range from anything from ceasing about posting them (outside of occasional reblogs) or continuing to post them but adding a disclaimer. Additionally, what advice would you give to new hockey fans regarding such players? Hell, I'm actually interested in some advice as well, considering my own habit of posting problematic players (something I admittedly feel slightly conflicted about, especially as a young hockey fan who's still learning about the sport and it's culture).
