18th Street Methodist Episcopal Churchyard
An 1852 map shows the 18th Street Methodist Episcopal Church, with its grounds extending to 19th Street.
In 1836, members of the Methodist Episcopal Church of the City of New York established a church on property owned by the society on 18th Street, west of 8th Avenue. The church was erected on a site known as the “old Chelsea burying ground,” where, it was said, villagers had long been buried. Shortly after dedicating their new house of worship on 18th Street, the society built a number of burial vaults in the grounds surrounding the church. These were used by church members and residents of the rapidly growing neighborhood of Chelsea, and became a source of considerable income for the church. Approximately 500 bodies were interred in the vaults between 1836 and 1851, when a city ordinance forbade further burials below 86th Street.
A view of 18th Street Methodist Episcopal Church in 1885
The churchyard of the 18th Street Methodist Church consisted of a strip of land, 100 x 50 feet, running from the back of the church to 19th Street, and an additional 50 x 20 foot plot on the southeast corner behind the church parsonage. It contained 64 vaults, including large public vaults used by licenses, and smaller, private vaults acquired by deed. The vaults were “splendidly built of brickwork throughout;” the entrance to some was by a door on the side; to others admittance was gained by lifting a slab on top. In an 1886 article in the Evening Post, a Chelsea resident describes a funeral he attended in the 18th Street churchyard during the summer of 1849, when a neighbor and her and child during a cholera epidemic of that year. “I do not remember in what vault the young mother, with her babe asleep upon her quiet bosom, was laid away,” he recalled, “but I remember going down some steps that were green and slimy with the breath of decay, and looking with awe-struck curiosity at the contents of some shelves that were already occupied by crumbling tenants.”
The Daily Graphic illustrated the removals from the 18th Street Methodist churchyard in 1886. At left coffins are shown stacked in the vaults; at right the grounds dug up behind the church.
By the 1880s, the members of the 18th Street Methodist Church viewed their defunct vault yard with disfavor, considering it unused land that could be a source of revenue. The trustees of the church, a young, “vigorous and business-like” group with no sentimental attachment to a generation that had long since passed away, in 1882 offered a resolution to remove the dead from the vaults in the strip of land extending from the rear of the church to 19th Street. Although many of the vault owners initially resisted the plan to clear out the vaults and sell the ground, by 1886 the Trustees had obtained consent to proceed with the disinterments and the bodies were removed to plots at Woodlawn and Cypress Hills cemeteries. After the removals, the church sold the section of the property fronting on 19th street for $26,000 and townhouses were built there. It’s not known when or if the bodies from the smaller plot to the rear of the parsonage, or the bodies from the earlier Chelsea Village burial ground, were ever removed from the church grounds.
The 18th Street Church continued as a place of worship for the Methodists in the Chelsea section until 1945, when they merged with the Metropolitan-Duane Methodist Church at 7th Avenue and 13th Street and subsequently sold their property on 18th street. During demolition of the church in 1950, workmen unearthed eleven human skulls and several dozen arm and leg bones when digging belong the surface of the lot. No evidence of the old vaults was reported at that time; the remains, which were found in a large pile in the ground, likely were left behind during the earlier removals. A six-story apartment building sits atop the site today.

The Iconic Sunshine Cinema Building is No More
The sun finally set on the Sunshine. Next up, boutique office space to further dull any edge still in the neighborhood.
The iconic Lower East Side theater at 141 East Houston is now pulverized, having spent the better part of the last few months under drills. Daylight is now visible where the decorative marquee previously held court.
What’s left of the Sunshine Cinema skeleton is shrouded behind the black death netting.
Owner-developers East End Capital and K Property Group, who together purchased the Lower East Side theater two years ago for $31.5 million, are behind the bland redevelopment. The nine-story, $90 million construction boasts eight full-floor commercial units ranging in size from 5,000 to 6,800 square-feet. Each column-free office will have 12-foot ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, concierge services, and private terraces. Other shared amenities include an executive conference room and roof deck. There is also one multi-level retail space with 60 feet of frontage.
As for the Sunshine Cinema neon lettering, a spokesperson from East End previously confirmed that the signage is in their possession. Likely to be hoisted as some sort of trophy in the new development.

Carnegie Deli Making Return to NYC as Pop Up for Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
The original Carnegie Deli. Photo by James & Karla Murray from their book NEW YORK NIGHTS
A lot of New York City’s iconic restaurants have closed in recent years, and the Carnegie Deli was a loss felt keenly. Little known is that the 81-year brand lives on and can be licensed. Two outposts currently exist: one in Madison Square Garden (as a concession stand on game nights) and one in the Mirage in Las Vegas. And from December 1 to 8, New York City will get a triumphant return of Carnegie Deli, albeit as a temporary pop up restaurant. It’s timed in conjunction with the second season of the hit Amazon series, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which is filmed in New York City.
The Carnegie Deli pop up will be located in Nolita, at 201 Lafayette Street, in the former San Remo cafe space. This playful iteration of the deli will be set in the year 1958 and have the tagline, “Home of the Maisel,” featuring a special “Maisel” sandwich. Amazon writes that vintage decor will include a jukebox, photobooth and even a period-style menu.
All the food and drinks will be 99 cents or below, including a “Susie” sandwich named after the main character Miriam’s agent, a “Mish Knish” for 75 cents, a black and white cookie for 50 cents, a cheesecake for 50 cents, and pickles for 50 cents. Drinks include Dr. Brown’s Soda, Iced Tea and Coffee, all for 50 cents. Although the Carnegie Deli pop up was taking advance reservations for up to 4 on Open Table (which were booked out fast), tables will open every hour for walk in guests. Plus there’s a takeout counter being billed as the “quickest takeout counter you’ve seen since 1958!”
According to NY Daily News, all proceeds from the Carnegie Deli popup for the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel will be going to a good cause: The Lower East Side Girls Club.
Get ready for the next season of the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Amazon by catching up on the filming locations for the first season!

IN MEMORIAM: Remembering the Legacy of Director John Singleton
Tumblr media
Singleton launched the acting careers of several young African Americans on his way to notoriety. They included Ice Cube, Tupac Shakur, Cuba Gooding, Regina King, Janet Jackson, Taraji P. Henson, and Tyrese Gibson. (Photo: John Singleton / George Pimentel Wikicommons)
By Lauren Victoria Burke, NNPA Newswire Contributor
Like a meteor, John Singleton, the youngest-ever Best Director nominee in the history of the Academy Awards, died on April 29 after a stroke. He was 51.
“An inspiration to us all. John Singleton, you will be greatly missed,” the Academy of Arts and Sciences said in a statement on April 29.
At age 24, Singleton became the youngest African American — and youngest person ever — to be nominated for an Oscar. Nominated for Best Director for his 1991 film, ‘Boyz N the Hood,’ which was also nominated for Best Original Screenplay. The film would become a staple and a right of passage moment in the African American community.
“Time and time again, John drew upon his unique life experiences as a South Los Angeles native to skillfully showcase the African American experience in his highly acclaimed roster of films, which include ‘Higher Learning,’ ‘Poetic Justice,’ and ‘Baby Boy.’ John forced our country to reckon with the ills of our troubled history with the issue of race in ‘Rosewood,’” wrote Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) who was also a personal friend of Singleton.
“He brought new awareness to the realities and pain our community faced at the height of the crack cocaine epidemic with his latest FX television series ‘Snowfall.’  All the while, John paved the way for future African American directors and filmmakers, and created opportunities for scores of young African American actors,” she added
Singleton launched the acting careers of several young African Americans on his way to notoriety. They included Ice Cube, Tupac Shakur, Cuba Gooding, Regina King, Janet Jackson, Taraji P. Henson, and Tyrese Gibson.
Singleton’s breakout film, ‘Boyz N the Hood,’ relayed a story that covered the territory of drugs, working class Black families and gun violence that many at the time were not ready for. Singleton’s work highlighted a jarring statistic: One out of every twenty-one Black American males will be murdered.
Currently, homicide remains the leading cause of death for black males between the ages of 15 through 34. And, according to research published in the Annals of Internal Medicine in 2018, “Between 2008 and 2016, black men were more likely to die by guns in homicides.”
Singleton is survived by his mother, Sheila Ward, his father, Danny Singleton and his children Justice, Maasai, Hadar, Cleopatra, Selenesol, Isis, and Seven.

Unsere Liste der 8 besten Whiskey Bars in New York
1. The Dead Rabbit im Financial District
“The Dead Rabbit Grocery and Grog” ist schon jetzt eine der besten Whiskey-Bars in New York.
Mehr zur “The Dead Rabbit Grocery and Grog” erfahren
2. Brandy Library in TriBeca
Adresse: 8 Stuyvesant St New York, (NĂ€he 9. Straße zwischen 2nd und 3rd Avenue)
5. The Flatiron Room in Midtown

6. On the Rocks in Hell’s Kitchen
Adresse: On the Rocks: 696 10th Avenue (zwischen 49th und 50th Street)
7. Connolly’s Pub and Restaurant am Times Square

121 W 45th St

8. Hudson Bar and Books im West Village
I got into the business when Ed Koch was still mayor. Then I covered little bits of the Dinkins, Giuliani and Bloomberg administrations. All of those guys, in their own way, hated the press. But at least they took questions from reporters every single day. So I’m just going on notice that the next time Mayor de Blasio decides to hold a press avail — which isn’t today, by the way — I’m coming with a full notepad and lots of memos I’ve been writing on cocktail napkins for at least a week. One of them says, “Dyckman.” One of them says, “Morris Park Avenue.” One of them says, “Queens Boulevard.” Another says, “Marty Golden.” And there’s another I can’t really read, but it may simply be a reminder not to forget my mother’s birthday.
Here’s the news:
I have to say I was a bit confused by the headline on NPR’s story about scooters, “As E-Scooters Roll Into American Cities, So Do Safety Concerns.” You guys do understand that car drivers killed more than 37,000 people last year, right? Kinda puts the “scooter threat” in perspective a bit, dontcha think?
The Bike Snob goes after the Spandex set in his latest column. (Outside)
MTA announces a “haunted subway” for Halloween. What could go wrong? (Gothamist, amNY)
OK, so maybe I was a bit harsh on Senator Chuck Schumer yesterday, calling him out for not doing enough to fight Donald Trump’s right-wing assault on the judiciary, so today I want to thank our senior senator for his work on getting us some more legroom on airplanes.
Mayor de Blasio confirms that he’s going with the “Promen-nada!” plan for the BQE repairs. (Brooklyn Paper)
Car2Go comes to Queens — and naturally residents are concerned about what they consider their parking spaces. (QNS)
Some great car mayhem shots from the great Paul Martinka. (Brooklyn Paper)
If you see lots of bus shelters blocked off this week, it’s because one fell apart in Staten Island and JCDecaux is doing the “abundance of caution” thing. (Patch, amNY, WSJ)
City DOT unveils a “left turn calming” program on Staten Island. Cue the locals who fail to react calmly to it (though Beep Jimmy Oddo likes it!). (Staten Island Advance)
Some Williamsburgers are calling for the reopening of the old Hope Street underpass under the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, which was closed in the 1990s because it was gross and everyone hated it. (Bklyner)
And, finally, wait, what?! Um, we have to do better, New York. This is an embarrassment. (NY Times)

Experts: Reparations Are Workable and Should Be Provided
Tumblr media
“The odds against success are great but given the meager gains to date, it’s just as fruitful to argue for reparations as anything else and besides it is a just cause,” said Dr. Mary Frances Berry, a Geraldine R. Segal Professor of American Social Thought and the author of numerous books including “My Face is Black Is True: Callie House and the Struggle for Ex-Slave Reparations.
By Stacy M. Brown, NNPA Newswire Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia
As Joe Biden prepares to enter the crowded Democratic field for the 2020 presidential election, it wouldn’t be surprising if the former vice president will join the other 19 declared candidates in using reparations for the Transatlantic Slave Trade as a political platform.
Candidates including New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, California Sen. Kamala Harris, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, and former HUD Secretary Julian Castro have said they intend to seek reparations for African Americans.
Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren has asked for reparations for both African Americans and Native Americans.
Just three years ago, a United Nations working group jumped into the fray.
Following 14 years and 20 days of speaking with U.S. officials, activists, and families of people killed by police in major American cities, the U.N. working group issued its conclusion that the slave trade was a crime against humanity and the American government should pay reparations.
The experts traveled to major cities including Washington, D.C.; Jackson, Mississippi; Baltimore; Chicago and New York.
“Contemporary police killings and the trauma it creates are reminiscent of the racial terror lynching in the past,” a French member of the working group of U.N. experts Mireille Fanon-Mendes-France, told CBS News.
Dr. Mary Frances Berry, a Geraldine R. Segal Professor of American Social Thought and the author of numerous books including “My Face is Black Is True: Callie House and the Struggle for Ex-Slave Reparations,” told NNPA Newswire that, “as matter of justice and no matter how long it takes, there should be a full-throated demand for reparations for slavery echoing the demand of the thousands of ex-slaves in the 19th century and reasserted time and again since.”
“The odds against success are great but given the meager gains to date, it’s just as fruitful to argue for reparations as anything else and besides it is a just cause,” Dr. Berry said.
“Whatever we do, we should remind ourselves, as Frederick Douglass said, ‘Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never has. It never will,’” she said.
Berry, who once served as chair of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and as Assistant Secretary for Education in the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, scoffed at the idea that reparations are “unworkable.”
Precedent has already been set, she said.
“The country has lots of experience with reparations. The federal government gave compensation to slave owners in the border states who let their slaves enlist in the Union Army,” Dr. Berry said.
“Also, during the Civil War, compensation was given to slave owners in the District of Columbia when slaves there were freed in 1862 and, more recently, compensation for Holocaust victims and the victims of Japanese Internment are examples of reparations,” she said.
Dr. Berry continued:
“In the 19th century after the Civil War, Callie House, a former slave, led a movement to demand pensions for old ex-slaves as reparations for their poverty and unrequited labor during slavery.
“Her organization collected petitions including the names of former owners of ex-slaves and succeeded in having bills introduced in Congress and sued the federal government, losing on technical grounds.”
San Francisco-based attorney Dale Minami, who was involved in significant litigation involving the civil rights of Asian Pacific Americans and other minorities, said he believes the African American vote is critical to a successful reparations campaign.
“With the racial divide stoked by President Donald Trump’s racial bias, the need for some healing among the races is a progressive and necessary policy and redress and reparations promote this healing so that we can move toward a less factionalized, less racially divided country,” Minami said.
For those who believe reparations are unworkable, Minami said they’re conflating two separate issues: the deserving claim to reparations and the difficulty in implementation.
“Reparations is a good idea and depending how you define implementation determines the ‘workability,’” he said.
“If reparations means individual payment, yes, there is a huge problem of allocation of money based on percentage of Black ancestry but if you define it as a Trust Fund to support Black institutions, community organizations, education, or other projects to improve the African American community, it’s bit easier to implement,” Minami said.
As an example, the Civil Liberties Public Education Fund of which Minami served as chairman, received $5 million as part of a Redress bill to give to projects that educate about the injustice of the incarcerations of Japanese Americans.
The original bill called for $50 million but so many were still alive when Redress was granted, the fund dwindled, Minami said.
“So, I think there are creative ways to help make up for the enormous cruelty of slavery and its long-term effects on the Black community,” he said.

Five Points: 2019 Schedule
Major League Soccer today announced the complete schedules of the 24 North American franchises set to contest the 2019 regular season.
As previously announced, the Boys in Blue will kick off the season away to Orlando City for the third time in five seasons and will host D.C. United in the Home Opener at Yankee Stadium.
There’s plenty more to go at when all the points are on the board, so let’s take a look at five key points from today’s announcement

EARLY BIRD GETS THE WORM
Start how you intend to finish.
After another season opener against the purple team from Central Florida, the Boys in Blue will return to the Bronx for a couple of marquee matchups against Wayne Rooney’s D.C. United in the Home Opener and Los Angeles Football Club’s first-ever visit to Yankee Stadium a week later.
From there, we touch road to Toronto to take on a hungry Reds side that missed out on the last season’s playoffs but hired former New York Red Bulls GM Ali Curtis to replace Tim Bezbatchenko, who has moved on to Columbus Crew.
A visit from the returning Ignacio Piatti and the Montreal Impact round out the first five in Season 5.
SUMMER SOCCER
Even with the consistent addition of expansion teams and changes to the format, one thing remains the same, Major League Soccer teams need to start hitting that stride in the summer months ahead of the run in to the playoffs if they want to lift silverware.
Slow starters will find solace in teams from the past like the 2016 Seattle Sounders who lost seven matches before the calendar hit June and then lost only six the rest of the way into the playoffs on their way to a first MLS Cup championship.
NYCFC’s summer of soccer will be staged in the Bronx at Yankee Stadium. Starting on Thursday June 6, NYC will host four consecutive home games, starting with Cincinnati’s first ever visit to NY, followed by Philadelphia Union on June 29, Seattle Sounders on July 3, and Portland Timbers on July 7th before crossing the river for the first Hudson River Derby of the season in New Jersey on July 14.
Something to note: the shifting schedule means only two regular season New York derbies. Maybe this is the season the fans get that magical playoffs matchup

THE NEW GUYS
There will be two matchups vs. top division upstarts FC Cincinnati. The first falling on Thursday, June 6 in the Bronx, and the first-ever away trip to The Queen City coming later in the season on Saturday, August 17 at Nippert Stadium on the campus of the University of Cincinnati.
GOING AT THE KING PEACH
If you are going for the king, you best not miss. And we do not intend to.
The Five Stripes will enter the 2019 regular season with a target on their backs having lifted the MLS Cup in 2019 on the backs of a record setting regular season that saw United’s striker Josef Martinez break the MLS scoring record.
One of the league’s most anticipated matchups since 2017 should have a bit of different tactical twist with Frank De Boer replacing the outgoing Tata Martino at the ATL helm.
City will head down south to take on the defending champs in a nationally televised matchup on Sunday, August 11th (ESPN), and we will welcome them back to the BX on Wednesday, September 25th in a match that could be vital in terms of playoff seedings.
DECISION DAY
MLS introduced a new playoff format shortly after the 2018 playoffs, and the tradition of “Decision Day” should only continue to grow in stature with the new changes.
A 14 team, fixed-bracket, single-elimination format with the higher seed hosting every match will commence on October 9th. The playoffs will also conclude earlier than in previous years, with the entirety of the competition being played out between the October and November FIFA international breaks.
Only one team per conference will be given a first-round bye – with the idea being to emphasize regular season excellence even more.
With no reseeding as well, home field advantage will be of paramount importance heading into the post-season.
Let’s get it! #ForTheCity

Eyes On The Street: Great B82 SBS Service Hurt by Cars, Golden, Felder
Southern Brooklyn politicians who favor private parking to public transit have succeeded — they’ve made the B82 SBS run far worse for tens of thousands of constituents.
The MTA and city Department of Transportation launched the limited-stop select bus route earlier this month, and it has resulted in shorter bus trips for riders — but those trips could have been even shorter had State Sen. Marty Golden, State Sen. Simcha Felder, Council Member Chaim Deutsch and others not intervened to deprive the route of more dedicated bus lanes.
As a result, the bus is constantly delayed by double- and illegally-parked cars and trucks along the commercial strip in the heart of its route: Kings Highway between Avenue P and Ocean Parkway.
But Felder — hailed as a hero in the pro-parking Jewish press — only sees the buses causing all the problems. In an Oct. 11 letter to New York City Transit President Andy Byford, he claimed his office has “been inundated with complaints about unmanageable gridlock” along the segment of the route near Nostrand Avenue (for the record, Streetsblog didn’t witness any “gridlock” during several round-trips this month on the B82 SBS. Reminder: Gridlock is entirely caused by drivers who enter intersections before there is room for them to get through said intersection).
The route of the B82 SBS.
Rather, the only consistent problem along the route from Gravesend to Starrett City is that illegally parked cars and trucks — which the politicians enabled by refusing to create more dedicated bus lanes — ruin what could otherwise be efficient, speedy, comfortable bus service.
The Department of Transportation wanted to create 6.5 miles of dedicated bus lane, but capitulated to the pols and create just five miles. Agency spokeswoman Alana Morales said DOT thinks that “this give and take process over the course of two-plus years has overall led to a stronger plan.”
It has not.
The good news? The B82 SBS is a delight. Off-bus ticketing and all-door boarding, plus more dedicated lanes trim roughly 18 minutes off the full journey from Seaview Avenue to 24th Avenue. That’s 21 percent faster than Google Maps estimated for the journey on the standard B82.
The improvement is impressive, but it would be so much better if so many drivers didn’t illegally park on the commercial stretch of Kings Highway in the neighborhood many call Madison (but I consider Midwood).
Here are just some of the drivers who selfishly slowed down hundreds of bus riders:
More people would take the bus and abandon their cars if drivers were less selfish about blocking buses in the public right of way, as they do here on Kings Highway. Photo: Gersh Kuntzman
Here’s another:
This one was unbelievable. The driver of the black SUV actually stopped directly across from the Frito-Lay truck, leaving literally no room for anyone to pass.
All of this “gridlock” could have been avoided with bus lanes and proper parking enforcement. But politicians deferred to the tiny portion of the electorate that gets around in private cars (or, more likely, the shipowners who want to have a spot in front of their stores so they can feed the meter all day). For some reasons, voters don’t hold them accountable when they simply lie; indeed, the MTA/DOT proposal for the SBS revealed that 75 percent of weekday shoppers on Kings Highway arrive either by transit or on foot. Only 23 percent drove to the commercial area. So why defer to the needs of that car-owning minority?
This bus even smiles at you. Photo: Ben Jay
Why not, instead, help people like Juvenal Gonzalez, a 22-year-old security guard who uses the new SBS to get from E. 1o5th Street to the B/Q station at Kings Highway.
“It gets me [to the subway] a lot faster because it skips so many stops,” he said, estimating that the SBS saves him 10 or 15 minutes.
If Felder wanted to help people like Gonzalez, he could refocus his attention on transit users, not the drivers who are getting in the way.
He hinted as much in that Oct. 11 letter to Byford, writing, “We ask you to take any, and all necessary steps to ease traffic flow.”
My guess, however, is that Felder meant “all necessary steps except for removing on-street car storage in favor of more dedicated bus lanes.” (Felder, as always, did not respond to a request for comment.)
