i can never write a soulmates au cause i very quickly stop thinking about romance and start thinking about the sociological implications of a world where soulmates are a confirmed verifiable thing

#oh get ready for an essay in your tags sorry op #even though you likely wont see this anyway #all of these things are actually stuff that my boyfriend and i try to address when we make soulmate aus for our characters #because often times the implications of soulmate aus feel very.... forced. like neither party has a choice #so we aim to fix that #a lot of the time what we do is put a system in place where the universe inherently 'knows' if you and your soulmate are compatible #and if you aren't or you or the soulmate take actions that would CHANGE your compatibility #then whatever was bonding you in the first place would fade #and the fact that that bond was present to begin with guarantees that you WILL meet your soulmate in your lifetime #but your soulmate can also change #I think my best example of this is red strings of fate #your string starts forming really really early on but if your soulmate is really far away #it just appears as a little red knot on your finger and the closer you get #the more bright the string is #but if for example your soulmate started to do something that you could or would not forgive them for #then the string would start to fade completely #It can come back if they get back on the right track though #we've also adapted most of them to handle being poly really easily bc we are also poly #so for strings you can just. Have more than one #We've never really touched on it but platonic soulmates would very much be a thing because platonic bonds are just as strong as romantic #Casual dating would be less of a thing in the strings au but the way we have most others set up #it's actually encouraged to casually date so you can yknow. figure out if that's your soulmate or not #or if they were meant to be and neither of you actually knew it #(that's not to say you don't have to WORK to make it work mind you #the hero and villain can still be linked together and STILL be at odds #while also knowing that they are indeed meant to be together somehow #which means something is going to have to happen to one or both of them for it to actually work out #and I hope that makes sense lol) #there's nuance depending on the au but I'm with op here; #the inherent horror of being bound to one person with no other choice is just too much
