Penny laughed. âWhat, too soon?â she asked, finally slipping out the window.
âYouâre the worst,â Iliana told her. âSee you around?â
Penny grinned up at her from the rock. âYeah, Iâll see you.â She checked around to make sure no one was watching as she stepped down. âAnd...thanks,â she added with a glance back up at Ilianaâs window.
âDo you believe in love?â [Iliana, behindthemidnightsun]

Penny let out a long hum as she mulled over the question. It took her a minute, not surprising considering how much theyâd been drinking, and she still wasnât very confident in her answer.
âI dunno. I guess,â she decided with a shrug. âHard to believe in something youâve never seen though, you know?â

Penny offered her a crooked grin. âHow about a kiss good-bye?â she teased.
âFuck off,â Iliana returned, laughing despite herself. âGo on, get out of here before weâre both in trouble.â
Penny laughed. âWhat, too soon?â she asked, finally slipping out the window.

Penny rolled her eyes as she made her way to the way too bright window. âFuck,â she mumbled, shoving open the window. She straddled the windowsill, glancing down at the convenient stepping stool of a rock below. âWait,â she said, turning back to Iliana before she left.
Iliana glanced anxiously back at her door before looking back at Penny. âWhat?â
Penny offered her a crooked grin. âHow about a kiss good-bye?â she teased.

âYou think?â Penny repeated, laughing and making her way to the window. âYouâre the one who doesnât want to get in trouble.â
âIâm also hungover, and the sunâs out,â Iliana grumbled. She backed away from the window to help Penny through it. âIt looks clear. Try to be quiet.â

Penny grabbed her shoe from Iliana and shoved it on her foot. âIâmâI donât know,â she whispered hoarsely. âI barely remember getting here.â
âWell, if I find anything you left, Iâll bring it for you next time,â Iliana promised. She tried once more to peer out the window, shading her eyes and squinting through the stabbing in her skull. âI think the coast is clear.â

âRight, sorryâŠâ Penny mumbled, finally rolling out of bed herself and trying to remember where her drunk self had left her things. âWhereâs my other shoe?â
âFuck, I donât know.â Iliana turned away from the window to help Penny look. She eventually found the shoe under the bed, kicked halfway behind Ilianaâs hockey bag. She fished it out, then sat up with a groan. âOkay, here. Is there anything else?â
Penny grabbed her shoe from Iliana and shoved it on her foot. âIâm--I donât know,â she whispered hoarsely. âI barely remember getting here.â

Still smiling her shy smile, Penny nodded. âOkay, um... Iâll see you Wednesday.â
[phone call from Penny] "Um, hi, is this...Kinsey's Cuts? I'm, um... I'm looking for Kinsey...?"
The person who answered the phone had a strong Scottish accent and a sunshine-bright chipper tone. âYeah, this is Kinseyâs Cuts! Kinseyâs in the back right now, but if you can hold, Iâll go see if I can wrestle her away from whatever wig sheâs working on.â@the-forgotten-stars

Penny cracked one eye open to look up at Iliana. Her anxiety was telling her to get up and get out of here before she got caught, but her hangover was making her body a little slow to catch up.
âFuck...â she mumbled into her pillow.

âI-I will, thanks,â Penny said, knowing full well she was going to go home and immediately do way too much research on swing dancing to prepare for Wednesday. âAny other tips?â she asked with a nervous laugh.

Penny winced sympathetically. âThatâs okayâI take the bus everywhere anyway.â
She couldnât help a small, shy smile as she looked down at the paper in her hand. âUm, Iâm...excited,â she admitted, peeking back up at Kinsey.

Penny, hungover and seriously enjoying how comfortable this bed was, only groaned and rolled away, seemingly unfazed by the other person in bed or the urgency of their situation.

âYeah,â Penny mumbled, managing a laugh. âNever seen her catch on fire before but⊠I mean, she still doesnât deserve to go to jail or anything, she needs help notâŠnot thatâŠâ
The mention of jail hit Puck hard, and he flinched visibly. He knew how Allie felt about the intrusive enforcers of the law in Night Vale, be they official or vigilante, and the thought of her being detained by them for any amount of time hurt him as surely as the way theyâd parted had.Â
âIâll do what I can,â he said quietly, getting to his feet.Â
Penny nodded distractedly. âYeah,â she mumbled, glancing back toward the basement door, itching to get back to her work. âMe too.â

Pennyâs heart contracted in her chest as she watched Cereza flinch away from her. She didnât know what else to do except let her get comfortable and listen to her story.
Tears stung in her own eyes, and she resisted the urge to reach out for Cereza again. âIâŠâ Penny wasnât sure what to say. âThatâs not your fault. Youâyou didnât make it, you didnât plant it. YouâreâŠthatâs not on you, Cereza.â
âBut if I wasnât there⊠Twelve more people would have lived. All of them deserved it more than-â She hiccuped again, smearing long streaks of mascara down her face as she wiped her eyes. âMore than me. A broke ass ex-stripper with no future.â
A light flashed from Cerezaâs pocket and played a gentle tune. It was her brother calling- it was far past midnight by now.
âGoyo would be better off too.â
âStop that,â Penny told her, desperately searching for the right thing to say. âIt was a bomb, Cer, it would have hurt people no matter what, whether you touched it or someone else did.â
She untied the flannel wrapped around her waist and held it out to Cereza, for comfort or to wipe the make up from her face or to blow her nose in for all Penny cared. Anything to take away some of this pain.

It took a while to get Cereza away from her friends at Desviado, and even longer for Penny to work up the courage to say what had been on her mind for a while now.Â
Of course, courage came in the form of several shots of whatever drinks she could pronounce without sounding like an idiot, until she found herself leaning against the wall in the back of the club with Cereza, finally alone.
âThanks for bringing me out here,â she started, knowing that in this state, once she started talking she wasnât going to stop until she said what she wanted to say. âIâm having a lot of fun andâŠwell, not just tonight. Iâm having a lot of fun with you, and⊠I justâŠâ She glanced down at the floor, embarrassed. âI havenât felt this way about anyone in⊠I donât know, probably ever.â
Penny shrugged and glanced back up at Cereza, unable to mask the hope in her eyes. âI like you, short-stuff,â she finally admitted. With only a momentâs thought, Penny reached out for Cerezaâs hand, looking for some kind of comfort or assurance in the gesture. âLike, canât get you out of my head, fucking butterflies in my stomach like you.â
