Lae'zel's character and her entire situation at the beginning of the game becomes so much more funny when you find out she's 22. It makes so much sense. Imagine you're 22 and you're exposed to this dangerous toxin or chemical or something - but not to worry, you learnt that this can be easily fixed, you just need to dial 911 real quick. Common knowledge. Everyone knows that. You learnt that in kindergarten, it's up there with fire alarm drills.
But the people you're stuck with have no concept of modern medicine and when you say "let's go to the hospital" they will say shit like "i think they kill people at the hospital" and "we should ask this swamp lady" or "this guy over there told me about this homoeopathic healer kind of guy but he got abducted" or "this random bard wants to help" and "I'm not going to dial 911 because I don't want the government to know my home address" or "maybe we should consider a deal with Satan". And then a bunch of them KEEP consuming the chemical because it makes them "stronger". One guy might explode for unrelated reasons. You have a few days before this situation is getting critical and suddenly they're solving crime and doing general charity for the community.
And FOR SOME REASON you still try to help these idiots and you STILL want to help them get the cure even though they all keep insisting the "doctors" at the "hospital" might try to "kill them" and they don't have insurance. And you keep telling them to just. go. to. the. hospital. before the time runs out and you all die very horribly of a very treatable condition.
And also you're 22 in a foreign country and you're responsible for shepherding this gaggle of idiots who are all ranging anywhere from 24 to 240 years old.

a fools guide to not wanting to die anymore
by me, a fool who doesnt wanna die anymore
never make a suicide joke again. yes this includes “i wanna die” as a figure of speech. swear off of it. actually make an effort to change how you think about things.
find something to compliment someone for at least 4 times a day. notice the little things about the world that make you happy, and use that to make other people happy.
talk to people. initiate conversation as often as you possibly can. keep your mind busy and you wont have to worry anymore
picture the bad intrusive thoughts in youe head as an edgy 13 year old and tell them to go be emo somewhere else
if someone makes you feel bad most of the time, stop talking to them. making yourself hang out with people who drain you is self harm. stop it.

bonkers of a paladin is the best conclusion for this ✨ good stuff.
also me vibing with three druids and Astarion on one of my playthroughs: 🧚🏼🧚🏼🧚🏼👹
Why is Minthara a paladin and not a cleric?
TLDR; Minthara is forced into being a paladin by the games mechanics as the game does not allow for a godless cleric.
If you dig into drow lore, you'll know that all noble females receive training to become clerics, or priestesses, of Lolth. Given Minthara's status as a female in House Baenre, she would have had no choice but to become a cleric. So, why is she not?
Unfortunately, the game does not provide any explanation as to why she went down the path of a paladin. There does tend to be a lot of overlap between clerics and paladins so I think she most likely would have chosen to become a paladin while in training to be a cleric. While the game was still in EA, WOTC released Magic the Gathering cards of the NPC's in the game and Minthara is listed as a cleric on her card. When you meet her in Act 1, she's also wielding two maces, which is the stereotypical weapons for a cleric. Her AI when she's just an NPC and not a companion also tends to default her to a support role rather than a martial one. To compare, Zevlor is also a paladin but his AI defaults him to a martial role rather than support.
I do think at some point it may be possible that she was intended to be a cleric but was later changed to a paladin as her story evolved. Specifically involving where she abandons the gods. Per the rules of 5e, it is possible to have a godless paladin and a godless cleric, though, a godless cleric is probably not too popular in most DnD circles. If she was a cleric, Minthara would become a godless cleric as she swears off all gods.
Unfortunately, the game does not allow for clerics to be godless, even though you can be in the 5e rules of DnD which the game does follow. If you choose to be a cleric in the game, you are forced to pick a god. And since Minthara is classified as Lolth-sworn by the game, she would be forced to be a cleric of Lolth by the games mechanics, which would break her established lore.
I also think having Minthara as a cleric would bring some competition with Shadowheart. Most team builds really don't need nor want more than one cleric and Shadow is the first one you get. If Minthara was a cleric, players would be less inclined to have Minthara on their teams cause they already have a cleric. they also may struggle to want to swap Shadow out for Minthara as players will have established a rapport with Shadow by the time Minthara becomes available. I mean, look at Halsin and Jaheira. There are two druid companions, but most people who want a druid on their team will probably only pick one druid and/or reclass one character if they want both.
However, Halsin was never intended to be a companion and was shoved in last second, which is why there are two druids. There may have been enough time to make him a companion, but not enough time to completely overhaul his story in which he wouldn't be a druid and compete with Jaheira. But, Minthara was always intended to be a companion character so Larian probably foresaw the potential conflict between her and Shadow and were able to mitigate that early on by making her a paladin instead.
So, yeah. Minthara is a paladin cause the mechanics of the game kind of force her to be one and there is no lore explanation. Not that I'm complaining. She is absolutely bonkers of a paladin! But, I think it would have been very interesting for her to have been a cleric.

Side Note To Fan Fic Authors
Here’s the thing.
I read a lot of scripts.  A lot.  From professionals to aspiring writers to complete newbies.  Features and pilots.  Specs and treatments.
And 8 times out of 10 the fan fic that I’ve read over the last, oh, 15 years is leagues better than this stuff.  It’s more inspired.  It’s more compelling.  It’s genre bending and creative and heartfelt.  It’s well-paced and intense and funny and sexy and meaningful.  It’s smart and thoughtful and good.  It’s novel-quality.  Better than, sometimes.
Rare is the script I don’t want to put down, but how often have we stayed up until 3am to get to the last chapter of a 100k fic? And it’s not even a fan fic author’s day job.  This is what they do on the side.  In their spare time.  For free.
So my point is, fan fic authors, you’re good.  You’re good writers and great storytellers.  I know it doesn’t always feel like it, especially if you’re one of the authors who’s not a BNF and doesn’t get the notes/hits that a few do.  And  because some people still view fic as “not real writing.” You guys know the shit that gets made into movies.  You’re better than that.  So be better than that.  If writing is what you think want to do, then just know you’re already doing it.   You’ve already started.
And you’re more talented than you might think.

Minthara: Hm?
Lae’zel: What do you when a man won’t leave you alone?
Minthara: A man who you have rejected continues to make repeated and unwanted advances?
Lae’zel: Chk… Yes

reblogging bc wtf why isn't anyone talking about this
it was abt 400h into the game that I realised you can just pickpocket back all the money you pay Withers for his services,
its not like he can or will do anything abt it, with astarion its only like 23 check and you can just try again as many times as you wish
(now i am just thinking whether he will have the funds to throw the party at the end or not)

the datamined ultimatum halsin gives to the player actually makes halsin more evil than her. he'd send her to a certain death with no remorse and says its in her nature to be evil or something. just a thought. :P
btw yes i am biased af but i actually like halsin too
Sometimes it baffles me that Minthara is regarded as the most evil companion when she is the only one who doesn't even really do anything. The only time we see Minthara do anything evil is the grove raid. However, consider that she was literally being mind controlled, we can't exactly fault her for it. I mean, she spells it out pretty clearly for you. She did not have the capacity to fight against the Absolute's commands.
But once she joins your team, she does nothing. Literally. She does not actually do anything evil. She suggests evil. She encourages evil. But she doesn't do anything evil. She actually does what you tell her to do. So if you are doing evil, then she is doing evil and she will be ecstatic about it. If you are not doing evil, she'll bitch about it, but she'll stand by your side and begrudgingly not be evil. If anything, you are the greater evil as she is only doing what you are doing.
You have to tell Astarion not to ascend. You have to tell Lae'zel to stop worshiping her obviously evil god. You have to tell Gale to give up on the crown. You have to tell Shadow not to kill the Nightsong (under the wrong conditions). You have to convince Wyll not to kill Karlach. But, what ledge does Minthara ever stand on that you have to tell her to back away from? Like I said, she doesn't do anything evil herself and thus, there is never a moment in which you tell her not to do the evil thing.
"But, she wants to become Absolute." No, she wants you to become Absolute and she'll rule by your side. If you choose not to become Absolute, she'll bitch about it, but she moves on. Either way, it was a win-win for her.
This is why she needs a companion quest. She needs a moment where we can tell her "Hey, Minthy, stop being a jackass and don't do the evil thing." I need to see how Minthara would actually rationalize doing an evil thing herself and how she would try to convince you to let her do the evil thing. I need to see how she would rationalize your pleas into not doing the evil thing. I need to see how that moment impacts her development.

new tav alert bc my bestie told me to introduce them so here i am
Piper, the githfailure, outcasted since just an egg and raised by human parents. Knows absolutely nothing about their own culture, and never wants to. Pretends not to be who they are so hard it makes the feeling of belonging impossible to achieve.
Then they meet Lae'zel, who is both disgusted and endlessly intrigued by them. Piper themselves thinks Lae'zel is the most beautiful thing they've ever seen and is simultaneously terrified of her.
Their shipname is Pip'zel and it makes me smile every time I think abt it. They will raise the gith egg together and be the happiest little family Fae-run has ever seen.

The least effort ever put into a sketch but I have a new tav 🫶 she goes by she/he and is a drow sorcerer
This is his and Karlach's dynamic in a nutshell btw. Vittoria's really indifferent to everything and has a resting bitch face but then the power of friendship makes her realize that love is real
