I marked this "drugs/alcohol."
But they are more of the symptom than the cause.
I have to say, expecting to be something and then being forced to be nohing hurts most beings.
Not that that could possibly matter.
Haven't you been paying attention?

Once again, I, myself, have listened to Transatlanticism by Death Cab for Cutie.
Is this the new year? I -don't- feel any different.

OnTheTrailNotTheChair: Moved Smoothly Through The Smokies
The mountains and the changing leaves. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of, if not the most, visited National Parks in the United States. The park receives more than 9 million visitors each year. Of course, most of these visitors will drive into the park and maybe hike a few miles. They have a very different experience compared to mine, hiking all the way through the park after…

OnTheTrailNotTheChair: Tenaciously Trampled Tennessee
The Roan Highlands. The actual fact that I will be finishing this trail has started to become something that weighs heavily on my mind. At one point, I remarked that “I’ll be home in a couple weeks” to one of my hiking companions. This caused the both of us to stop, mid-conversation, and consider this exciting and horrifying fact. Though I am very much still in the excitement phase of this, the…

OnTheTrailNotTheChair: Into the Home Stretch
Leaving Virginia, there’s less than 500 miles of trail left. Less than the total number of miles in Virginia. 500 miles is still a long way, but after the 1,700 before it, it doesn’t really feel that way. Coming into Tennessee, three states out of 14 remain. One of my slight regrets about hiking southbound is finishing in these southern states. The Whites and Maine would have been a much more…

OnTheTrailNotTheChair: Virginia Finally Vanishes from View
Up in The Grayson Highlands. A phenomenon that happens to the majority of long distance hikers is something I’ve heard called “hiker head” or “hiker brain.” Essentially, doing hard exercise all day for weeks on end, operating at a calorie deficit the whole time tends to diminish one’s thinking ability. It’s not necessarily that I’ve gotten dumber, but thoughts have been coming slower and slower.…

OnTheTrailNotTheChair: Virginia Blues
The McAfee Knob picture. If it hasn’t become apparent already, Virginia is a long section of the AT. It occupies a quarter of the whole trail. I’m well over halfway now, but it’s been a long road. There’s still quite a ways to go. One concept I’ve heard about from northbounders is “Virginia Blues.” The length and position of Virginia often puts hikers in a negative mindset. This has been my…

OnTheTrailNotTheChair: Unfortunately Attractive Virginia Trail
A view off The Priest. I believe I’ve said before that seeing lots of day hikers is both a blessing and a curse. It means the trail will almost certainly be easy and well-groomed. However, one also usually has to play trail chicken with hikers who do not know the general trail etiquette. Nor how to get the hell out of a much faster hikers way. The AT was absolutely seething with day hikers and…

OnTheTrailNotTheChair: Stumbled Through Shenandoah
Shenandoah National Park contains some of the nicest trail I’ve seen on the AT thus far. Long stretches of dirt going over rolling mountains and hills, with plenty of chances for views. I can’t say I was able to fully appreciate it though. The exact reason eludes me, but my mind and body did not feel any kind of good through most of the Park. It might just be the general wear and tear that 1,200…
