Looking back to our brainstorming stages, down to production and distribution making, one thing that we (especially my understanding and take on this subject) truly explored is how refreshing it is to explore, undergo, and creatively manipulate elements and techniques, as it has rich potency in crafting emotions, evoking reactions, and immersing audiences in a world of storytelling beyond the written word.

Furthermore, the senior's work in Virtual Reality (Kuya Miggy's group) opened portals to new realms of storytelling, where reality seamlessly interlinks with the virtual. The immersive experiences unfolded vistas of creative possibilities, challenging conventional notions of narrative structure. Also, exploring AI competitiveness (I saw one group of seniors incorporating this style) injected a dose of futuristic intrigue into my storytelling bank knowledge. Witnessing the symbiosis between human creativity and artificial intelligence, I grasped the potential to amplify storytelling capabilities. AI became not just a tool but a collaborator, augmenting our narratives with insights and nuances that elevate the storytelling experience. Indeed, the evolving landscape of storytelling mediums, from traditional formats to the uncharted territories of augmented reality, virtual reality, and AI-driven narratives, challenged me (us) to adapt and innovate. As the head of the distribution plan, one of my most significant responsibilities is to ensure that I can tap and reach broader audiences as we seek to reveal the arena of struggles in the Philippines and eventually capture the web of corruption, injustices, gender discrimination, and poverty. As I have highlighted in our plan,

         …the key is to create an immersive experience that not only promotes the analog horror film but also sparks conversations around the social issues it addresses. TikTok's creative and interactive features can be essential for achieving our (Dekada Productions') goal.

Distribution (Publicity) Plan: Timetable and Contents to Produce

Navigating the role of the distribution plan head for our unconventional Digital Storytelling project, "Becoming Filipino," has been a journey filled with challenges and revelations. As I reflect on sharing analog horror content with a broader audience and highlighting it in social commentary, I contemplate the significance of breaking away from conventional norms. At the outset, embracing analog horror as our storytelling vehicle was a bold departure from the ordinary. The Philippines, entrenched in oppressive systems and socio-economic struggles, demanded a narrative that would cut through the noise. Analog horror, with its eerie and unsettling undertones, provided a unique lens through which we could shed light on the darker facets of our national identity.

Being at the helm of the distribution plan required a balance between capturing attention and delivering a profound social commentary. The decision to leverage platforms like TikTok and Facebook (through dp blast), while initially met with skepticism, ultimately proved to be a stroke of genius. The teasers and guidelines we strategically posted on TikTok became the digital foundation, leading our audience to a deeper understanding of "Becoming Filipino." The unconventional format not only grabbed attention (in less than three days, it garnered more than 500 views) but also fostered engagement (comments, DM's, and shares).

Instagram & Facebook Engagement: Utilizing my personal account to reach a wider audience

Witnessing the positive response from the audience, I couldn't help but marvel at the power of storytelling to transcend boundaries. The discomfort and eeriness conveyed through our analog horror approach became a compelling force, urging viewers to confront the uncomfortable truths embedded in our society. It was a testament to the idea that unconventional methods can be potent tools for societal reflection. Moreover, integrating social commentary into our analog horror narrative added layers of depth to our storytelling. It wasn't just about delivering scares but about provoking thought and instigating action. Realizing that our audience wasn't merely passive spectators but active participants in the dialogue on social issues was humbling and empowering.

As the project concludes, I'm left with a profound appreciation for the role of the distribution plan in amplifying the impact of our storytelling. Frozen in Frames: A Photographic Chronicle of Resilience and Activism

Last November 20, a meaningful and victorious student walkout transpired, clamoring the calls against budget cuts on education, privatization of transportation, and state repression. As we (as a student and part of Tug-ani as photojournalists) navigate the streets of Lahug to Fuente, camera in hand, capturing the enthusiasm of jeepney drivers and students rallying for their rights, the philosophy of Time-Image takes center stage. Each photograph becomes a snapshot of collective determination, freezing the discernible spirit of advocacy and resistance filling the air in time. The furrowed brows, clenched fists, and steadfast gazes are not just captured moments but fragments of a larger narrative, a story of resilience and courage. In my documentary work, the power of the Time-Image lies in its ability to preserve these crucial moments, transforming them into visual testaments to the strength and unity of those fighting and championing their rights.

As I sift through the images, each frame tells a story that extends beyond the streets and resonates through time. The Time-Image philosophy prompts me to reflect on the temporal nature of these photographs. They are not mere records of an event; they are capsules of emotion, passion, frustration, and hope of a country fighting for its identity and livelihood. Through the lens, I become a storyteller, freezing moments that might otherwise slip away, ensuring that the collective spirit of the rally is not lost to the passage of time.

Any Space

In the age of digital connectivity, the concept of Any Space adds a layer of significance to my documentation of the rally. What begins as a local protest on the city's streets transforms into a national and global conversation through the power of digital photography. When shared online, the images of rallying jeepney drivers and students transcend geographical boundaries. They become a universal language of resistance, a visual outcry that resonates with individuals nationally and worldwide who share similar commitments to justice and equity.

Any Space is not just a theoretical concept but a lived reality in my work. I witness how these images become part of a national narrative as I upload photographs onto social media platforms (through collaborations with another photojournalist in the Tug-ani publication platform). Once confined to a specific location, the painted placards and determined faces now find a home on the screens of people miles away. The rally becomes a shared experience, and digital photography serves as the bridge that connects diverse communities, fostering a sense of solidarity that extends far beyond the physical boundaries of the protest site.

Transmedia Narratology: Stories Across Platforms

With its spirited energy and multifaceted narratives, the rally is not confined to the streets alone. The concept of transmedia narratology becomes a guiding principle as I seek to tell a cohesive and immersive story that unfolds across various platforms. Remediation, as proposed by Bolter and Grusin, takes on a pivotal role in the context of the rally documentation. It involves not just capturing images but transforming them into dynamic canvases for storytelling. From overlaying powerful quotes (calls and demands) onto images to integrating multimedia presentations, remediation becomes a tool for amplifying the impact of the message.

With this memorable journey, I experimented with remediation techniques to enhance the communicative power of the photographs. My progression (through experience and observation) within the constantly evolving space of digital storytelling has been influenced by the linked currents of visuals and audio, especially in commonplace settings and environments. Beyond the confines of thematic limitations and dominant styles of producing media outputs, this exploration has revealed a narrative, style, and an element (synchronization) of digital manipulation that enriches a holistic view of stories and their connection to meaningful emotions. The integration of various themes in this synchronization process produces a subjective quest. During this experimentation, the synergistic unification of visuals and music creates an animated loom of expressions that imprint the viewer.

At the core of this exploration is the fluid rhythm of synchronization, an effective element that animates storytelling. This deliberate alteration, coupled with the synchronized interplay of visuals, transforms the setting into a holiday haven, diffusing the narrative with seasonal charm for a broader audience. Additionally, I've experimented with noir effects and vertigo elements, refining the essence of my videos. The noir aesthetic adds mystery with its stark contrasts and moody ambiance, while shadows dance in tandem with synchronized beats, transporting viewers to a different era. Simultaneously, vertigo effects heighten emotional impact—how it feels to be at clubs and bars despite being trapped in the music of Christmas vibes. These choices, seamlessly integrated with synchronized music and visuals, redefine storytelling. Although some will automatically change their perceptions of this manipulation, it tells something that through such exploration, we could really make nuances if we explore the possibilities of new storytelling making.

In my role for this production, I've been responsible for assembling the audio elements, including background music and the AI-generated narration. When crafting the narrations, we have discussed utilizing different variations of the Talk-to-Speech generator that emulates the eerie, vintage quality often associated with analog horror films. Airam and I explored various voices, adjusting pitch and manipulating speech patterns to align with the energy envisioned by our screenwriters, documented in our two-column script.

In this process, it's crucial to emphasize the significance of maintaining the authentic analog horror aesthetic when collecting audio and background music. Using online tools to generate narrations should be deliberate and methodical to ensure they evoke this genre's eerie and unsettling atmosphere. When selecting background music, it's imperative to opt for tracks that enhance analog horror's chilling and nostalgic mood, drawing from a palette of sounds typically heard in such films. That's why we're instructed to utilize 50s until 90s commercial music to depict imperative elements of analog horror films.

In addition to audio, the choice of graphics and images plays a pivotal role in achieving the desired analog horror effect. These elements combine to create a complete, immersive experience that resonates with the audience, effectively conveying the message of the PSAs while invoking the uncanny and unsettling vibe synonymous with analog horror. We are currently in the production making, and we can have a positive input towards our process to deliver a substantial product that aligns with our intended goal for this output.

Life in Pixels: Transforming my Stories into Digital Adventures (My Umwelt)

The concept of "umwelt" refers to the idea that every organism has its own subjective or perceptual world, shaped by its unique sensory capabilities, experiences, and interactions with its environment. In other words, umwelt describes how each organism perceives and interacts with its surroundings based on its specific sensory and cognitive capacities. As someone who regularly takes pictures and shares them on Instagram, the concept of umwelt can be applied in various ways, capturing my subjective experience, selective perception and framing, crafting stories through images, connecting, and documenting my life.

Every photograph I take is a snapshot of my distinct perspective in my world of umwelt. I'm not merely documenting scenes; I'm encapsulating the moment's emotions, memories, and significance. Each image becomes a vessel for my personal experiences, influenced by my background, interests, and feelings. As well, just like any organism in its environment, I can selectively perceive and focus on elements that resonate with me. When I raise my camera to take a photo, I instinctively frame the shot to emphasize what I find most captivating. My umwelt guides this process, directing my lens toward what's important to me, whether it's a stunning landscape, a cherished friend, or a simple yet meaningful detail. Being part of Generation Z, we have this culture of taking photos closely or zooming the camera's lens towards the subject—this practice alone creates a distinctive nature of how we perceive our umwelt differently from others.

Further, my Instagram profile is a canvas where I paint my stories through images. Each post is carefully chosen and edited to convey a narrative. I might use a sequence of images to tell a complete story, employing captions to add context and share the emotions I personally felt during those moments. I always sequence my stories and, as much as possible, curate them in a way that is in real-time action, as I want my audience to know precisely what I'm doing at the moment. Through the images I share, I'm extending an invitation to others to experience my world. I'm opening a dialogue, allowing people from different backgrounds and perspectives to engage with my stories, share their umwelts, and enrich my understanding.

Conceptualization of Analog Horror Films

Truly, the amalgamation of diverse interests and perspectives has the potential to give rise to powerful mediums that can effectively convey social commentary and foster thoughtful discussions. The collective thoughts and power of any production team with a common interest is a force to be reckoned with. I’m grateful for my group as we have cohesively combined our different perspectives and talents to the table, forming a creative synergy that leads to our conceptualization of producing narrative through analog horror films.

At first glance, I know we have a message to tell, but exploring such a genre of analog films is a challenge. Fortunately, with our first proposal presentation with Prof. Lloren, he enlightened us and gave us critical comments that benefit the progress of our works, such as a compilation of images, videos, and potential inspirations that may provide us with a bigger picture of what we are working on. Given that each group member has a significant topic, we have curated analog horror films through a web series, which underscores a significant influence on our Filipino identity. This common purpose is the driving force behind creating a medium to initiate dialogue and make a profound impact.

Our narrative revolves around a young Filipino who is about to register for a Government-issued Identification Card. He logs on to a website to go through the registration process but is soon interrupted by an online bug, prompting him to click and be redirected to a subsite. Here, he is presented with three Public Service Announcement (PSA) videos that brief him on the pertinent information needed before proceeding—each revolving around different aspects of being Filipino.

We have categorized our series, "Becoming Filipino," into three episodes. The first is PSA 1: Me and You, which delves into the scientific side of storytelling, emphasizing informative insights about community building and socio-economic dynamics in the Philippines. It explores traditional gender roles and the social class structure in the country, encouraging viewers to recognize the significance of upholding conventional gender norms and examining prevailing social characteristics in Philippine society. The first video uses sensory elements and a focused approach to expand viewers' horizons, making societal awareness more tangible and sparking curiosity as subsequent PSAs unfold.

Following the pilot episode is the PSA 2, entitled Behind the Smile (is the Struggle), which employs sensory experiences to depict the lives of various sectors. It starts with a cheerful introduction of the working class and peasants, but their smiles turn into distressing expressions. The video then illustrates the Filipino struggle, highlighting issues like soaring commodity prices and limited access to social services in rural and urban poor areas. The initial worker and farmer are now shown trapped in oppressive circumstances, with the worker enduring harsh labor conditions as a temporary employee and the farmer lacking land ownership. The PSA swiftly transitions to the next segment.

Lastly, the series's third video, Why are you Filipino?, allows viewers to revisit the images and texts from previous PSAs, encouraging them to reflect on the harsh realities of life in the Philippines and confront existential concerns. As the audience's senses are heightened, they gain a deeper understanding of societal issues, and their Filipino identity becomes more palpable. This last PSA involves the viewer providing biometric information for their official government record and National ID. However, it takes a twist by presenting various individuals, including criminals and activists, asking, "Is this you?" This challenges the viewer's sense of identity and concludes with a National ID displaying a blank face.

The heart of these collective endeavors is social commentary. The unique medium becomes a canvas for articulating opinions, shedding light on pressing issues, and challenging established norms. It provides a platform for creators to express their concerns, criticisms, and aspirations in a compelling and accessible manner. This stress on social commentary ensures that the medium serves a dual purpose - a means of creative expression and a catalyst for dialogue. Ergo, the power of collective consolidation is not limited to the creation of the medium itself; it extends to the reception and engagement of the audience.

Chess is a game that transcends borders, cultures, and backgrounds, and it's vital to ensure that LGBTQIA+ individuals are equally welcomed and visible in this intellectual arena. Historically, chess has often been seen as a cerebral and academic game, and the LGBTQIA+ community's presence in the chess world has only sometimes been highlighted. Queer representation in chess discourse involves recognizing and celebrating queer players, irrespective of their sexual orientation. For instance, acknowledging and supporting openly LGBTQIA+ chess players such as Grandmaster David Norwood, who has been openly gay, can go a long way in fostering a more inclusive chess community.

Yet, in the Philippine context, little to no recognition has been done. Playing the sport for almost 16 years, it's always been an insult for me when a solid or non-attacking player just passively or defensively makes a move; these men would often phrase them as "bading," referring to the idea that you're not aggressive enough to play. This socially constructed notion in chess may create a community wherein aspiring chess enthusiasts can ingrain this concept and eventually apply it to real-life situations. Furthermore, as I have witnessed growing up, I can only count on my hands the people who courageously present themselves in the manner that they want for themselves. Numerous chess players still hide in their closets and confide to show their authentic selves in the community. Although the sport of chess is a mind game and no conversations are made during the match, the confidence that each gay individual seeks by recognizing and accepting them will undoubtedly make a difference in the field. 

The stereotype that chess is exclusively a heterosexual or cisgender activity should be dispelled. LGBT chess players can compete at the highest levels of the game, and their accomplishments should not be overshadowed or stereotyped based on their sexual orientation. This principle can be related to players like Judith Polgar, one of history's strongest female chess players who has consistently shattered gender stereotypes in chess. It's about creating an environment where LGBT chess players can be themselves without fear of discrimination or judgment. Grandmasters like Igor Kurnosov and Pontus Carlsson's openness about their homosexuality exemplifies authenticity in chess, breaking down barriers and encouraging others to be true to themselves. Thus, queer representation in chess is about pushing boundaries in a game of intellect and creating a space where LGBTQIA+ players can be visible, authentic, and genuine to themselves.

The Design of the Story

The design aspect of queer representation in sports realized through short films, plays a pivotal role in amplifying the voices and experiences of LGBTQIA+ athletes. In filmmaking, every frame, every line of dialogue, and every narrative choice is an opportunity to convey a message. Short films serve as powerful tools for storytelling, offering a condensed but impactful medium to explore the lives, experiences, and accomplishments of LGBTQIA+ athletes. And through my personal story with improvised fictional details, I’ll use that as leverage to tell a message to the audience explicitly.

Summary Emanuel Paler grows up in the impoverished neighborhoods of Manila, where he discovers his exceptional talent for chess. With the tutelage and guidance of his father, who works tirelessly to provide for their family, Paler’s prodigious talent gains him recognition in local chess circles. His dedication to chess knows no bounds. He obsessively studies the game, competes in tournaments, and achieves remarkable success. However, his insatiable drive for perfection blinds him to the importance of losing, leading to a growing addiction to the thrill of victory and the high-stakes world of chess gambling.

As Paler’s addiction deepens, he turns to alcohol casual encounters and confronts his own sexual identity, creating a rift between him and his family. His once-promising chess career unravels as he loses sight of his true self. His addiction and self-destructive behavior intensify, causing him to spiral out of control. He alienates his family, loses sponsors, and taints his reputation in the chess community. Alone and at rock bottom, Paler confronts his inner demons and begins a journey of self-discovery. With the support of his fellow chess players, Paler embarks on the path to recovery, confronting his addiction and coming to terms with his identity as a gay man. Through this process, he rediscovers his love for chess, not as a means to win at all costs but as a way to connect with his true self. Paler’s journey becomes a beacon of hope and resilience for others facing addiction and identity struggles.

Setting

The urban setting of Manila serves as a stark backdrop for Paler’s journey. The slums represent the harsh realities he must overcome, while the cityscape symbolizes his aspirations. The juxtaposition of these environments emphasizes his journey from humble beginnings to the competitive world of chess. The use of location shots, including aerial views of the city and close-ups of its gritty streets, allows the audience to feel the weight of Paler’s environment.

Cinematography

The contrast between handheld shots in the slums and stylized compositions in competitive chess scenes creates a visual narrative. It mirrors his transition from a chaotic, uncertain life to the structured world of chess and his eventual return to stability. The visual contrast reflects Paler’s dual worlds and his journey from adversity to achievement. Symbolic imagery, like a chess piece being knocked over or Paler's reflection on a chessboard, can punctuate crucial moments in the story, highlighting his internal conflicts and personal growth.

Color Palette

The shift in the color palette as Paler’s journey progresses mirrors his transformation. The vibrancy of the chess world symbolizes hope and ambition, while the drab tones in his childhood environment convey hardship and adversity. The color palette should reflect the contrast between his impoverished upbringing (drab tones like grays, browns) and the vibrancy of the chess world (rich blacks, deep greens, and gold accents). This shift is subtle yet powerful in conveying his emotional evolution.

Sound Design

Amplifying the sounds of chess gameplay engages the audience's senses, allowing them to feel the tension and excitement of the matches. The sound of chess pieces moving and the ticking of the clock can become rhythmic elements that drive the narrative forward.

Production Design

Pay meticulous attention to set design. The slums should feel cramped, with makeshift homes and narrow alleyways, while the chess clubs and competitive venues should exude an air of prestige and sophistication.

Lighting

The use of natural light in outdoor scenes captures the authenticity of Paler’s upbringing. Artificial lighting in the chess scenes creates a heightened atmosphere, emphasizing the importance of these moments in his life.

Symbolism and Metaphor

The symbolic use of chess motifs reinforces the film's themes. For example, a pawn gradually becoming a queen on the board can signify Paler's transformation from vulnerability to strength.

Somatic Simulation, Paracosm and Pharmakon 

Somatic Simulation

Somatic simulation refers to the mental rehearsal or visualization of physical actions. In this case, it can be used to depict his intense preparation for chess matches. It can show Paler engaging in somatic simulations, mentally playing out various chess scenarios, and visualizing moves and counter-moves. As his obsession intensifies, these somatic simulations can become more vivid and obsessive, blurring the lines between reality and imagination. This reflects his growing addiction to the mental aspect of chess, even when he's not physically at the board. As he progresses in his recovery and self-discovery, somatic simulations can be repurposed as a tool for healing. He can use them to visualize positive outcomes in his life, including his relationships and acceptance of his sexuality.

1.1 Visualization of Chess Moves

In the early part of the film, when Paler is just discovering his chess talent, he sits at the library chessboard, quietly simulating moves in his mind. As he becomes more proficient, the camera can capture close-ups of his focused eyes and the chessboard, emphasizing his mental engagement with the game.

1.2 Escalating Obsession

As Paler's obsession with chess grows, somatic simulations become more prominent. During his addiction phase, he cannot sleep, with restless nights spent replaying chess matches in his mind. Show how this mental rehearsal consumes his thoughts, leading to exhaustion and erratic behavior.

1.3 Recovery and Transformation

During his recovery, he uses somatic simulations as a tool for healing. He practices mindfulness techniques, using chess visualization to regain focus and clarity. Show him sitting in a tranquil space, calmly visualizing chess moves, signifying his journey toward self-discovery and mental stability.

2.Paracosm

A paracosm is a detailed and imaginative fantasy world created within one's mind. Paler's paracosm could be his escape from the harsh realities of his life, a place where he is not defined by societal expectations or addiction. Through his paracosm, he can explore identity, freedom, and acceptance themes. His imaginary world might feature characters representing different aspects of himself, helping him come to terms with his complexity. As Paler's addiction and inner conflict escalate, his paracosm could become increasingly chaotic and fragmented, mirroring his internal turmoil. It becomes a refuge that slowly turns into a reflection of his struggle. In his path to redemption, he can use his paracosm as a metaphorical chessboard where he orchestrates his recovery. It becomes a space for self-reflection, healing, and transformation.

2.1 Escape from Reality

In the film's early stages, when Paler faces challenges in his personal life and societal pressures, his paracosm could be introduced as an imaginative escape. He could create an imaginary world where he is the fearless knight, free from the constraints of his reality.

2.2 Fragmentation of the Paracosm

As his addiction and inner conflict intensify, his paracosm could become more fragmented and chaotic. Intercut scenes of his increasingly disordered paracosm with his spiraling personal life, symbolizing how his refuge crumbles as he loses control.

2.3 Healing Through Imagination

In the film's later stages, he can revisit his paracosm as a means of healing and self-acceptance. Here, the paracosm becomes a place of reconciliation where he confronts his imaginary characters, each representing different facets of himself. He must make peace with these aspects to find wholeness.

3. Pharmakon

Pharmakon, a concept of poison and cure, can be symbolized through Paler's addiction. Initially, the drugs, alcohol, and addictive behaviors act as a poison, dragging him deeper into despair and conflict. As he reaches his lowest point, the film can introduce a metaphorical "pharmakon moment." He is faced with a choice: to continue down the path of self-destruction or to seek help and healing. This pivotal moment represents the dual nature of pharmakon. His recovery journey can be portrayed as a transformation process, where the same addictive tendencies that once poisoned him now become the cure. He channels his obsession into healthier pursuits, such as intense chess training, and his resilience becomes a potent antidote to his former self. Ultimately, the film's resolution showcases how Paler, through his inner strength and the support of others, has turned the poison of addiction into the cure for his fractured life.

3.1 Introduction to Addiction

As Paler's addiction takes hold, there can be a scene where he encounters a group of chess gamblers in a dimly lit, smoky room. Here, the concept of pharmakon is introduced. The game's lure and adrenaline rush can be depicted as both poison and cure.

3.2 Pivotal Moment of Choice

The pharmakon moment can occur when Paler, at his lowest point, stands at a crossroads. He can either continue his self-destructive path or choose the way of recovery. This moment can be depicted with visual symbolism, such as him standing at a literal crossroads, highlighting the dual nature of his choices.

3.3 Transformation

As he embarks on his path to recovery, his transformation can be symbolized through the metaphor of pharmakon. He turns the same obsessive tendencies that once poisoned him into a source of strength. Show him channeling his addiction-like focus into constructive chess training, reinforcing his resilience and determination.

Examples of Multimedia Works

Searching for Bobby Fischer (1993), this film is based on the true story of chess prodigy Josh Waitzkin and his journey through competitive chess. It explores the relationship between a young chess player and his mentor. , starring Tobey Maguire as chess legend Bobby Fischer, this movie delves into Fischer's life and his famous 1972 World Chess Championship match against Boris Spassky during the Cold War era. The Luzhin Defence (2000) film, based on the novel by Vladimir Nabokov, follows the life of a reclusive chess grandmaster, played by John Turturro, who becomes romantically involved with a woman while competing in a high-stakes chess tournament. Definitely, Magnus (2016) this documentary offers an intimate look into the life of Magnus Carlsen, the current World Chess Champion, from his childhood to his rise in the world of competitive chess. The Coldest Game (2019) is another media that can be used; it is set against the backdrop of the Cuban Missile Crisis. This thriller follows a troubled American mathematician thrust into a high-stakes chess game against a Russian grandmaster. The Dark Horse (2014), a New Zealand film, is also based on the true story of Genesis Potini, a chess champion who struggles with bipolar disorder and starts a chess club for underprivileged children.

But who would not be aware of the Netflix series "The Queen's Gambit" (2020), led by Anya Taylor-Joy, it's worth highlighting as it had a significant impact on popularizing chess and has received critical acclaim. It also stresses the concept of somatic simulation, paracosm, and pharmakon.

Everyone is bound to identify with one in the vast spectrum of labels, orientations, and identities. For centuries, the gender binary has dictated the way people view and interact with others. It categorizes identities into tiny boxes labeled man and woman. This constraint has also been evident in the name of sports; and continuously perpetuates in the modern times. 

Queer representation in the sports arena is an issue that has gained significant attention. It's not just about acknowledging LGBTQIA+ athletes' existence but also understanding the impact of their visibility in the sports field. These instances wherein an immense lack of representation often lead to the queers' invisibility in sports discourse. This invisibility has profound implications for the athletes, their experiences, and the community. Without representation, LGBTQIA+ athletes have struggled to find role models and allies within their sports communities. They have also faced discrimination, both overt and subtle, that's rooted in stereotypes and biases.

The discourse surrounding queer representation in sports seeks to change this narrative. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing and celebrating LGBTQIA+ athletes' achievements, just as we do for heterosexual athletes. This recognition goes beyond mere tokenism. It's about valuing these athletes for their talent, commitment, and passion for their sports, and more importantly, about acknowledging that sexual orientation does not dictate one's ability to excel in sports. The intended narrative also wants to explore and extend its interviews with queer athletes, coaches, and advocates who share their experiences and insights. These voices highlight the significance of visibility as they discuss how the lack of representation has affected their lives and careers. It's an opportunity to understand this issue's struggles and broader societal impact.

Within this discourse, addressing and challenging stereotypes that have long marginalized LGBTQIA+ athletes is vital. Common stereotypes include assumptions about athleticism and gender roles, leading to misconceptions about LGBTQIA+ individuals in sports. These stereotypes can manifest as homophobia, transphobia, and bias in various forms. Further, the discourse encourages breaking down stereotypes that reduce queer athletes to a single dimension, defined solely by their sexual orientation. They are more than their orientation; they are, first and foremost, athletes who have honed their skills through hard work and dedication. Discussing these stereotypes openly aims to dismantle them through facts, personal stories, and comprehensive narratives.

A perfect-picture example of this is Ms. Jem Orapa’s victorious debut in joining the women’s Volleyball category of UP Cebu’s Intramurals 2023. Orapa is a transgender woman who represented the College of Science. This experience breaks barriers as she becomes the first transgender woman who successfully joined the women’s team in UP Cebu’s annual game history. However, for some institutions, this isn’t the case; unfortunately, many traumatic and dehumanizing experiences, rules, and regulations are implemented to bypass the interest and freedom of LGBTQIA+ individuals.  

Ergo, this discourse is not merely an intellectual exercise but an act of protest for social change and progress. It challenges the status quo and seeks to create a more inclusive, accepting sports environment for LGBTQIA+ athletes. It calls for ending discrimination, equal opportunities, and a safe space where these athletes can thrive. It fosters an awareness of the diverse experiences within the LGBTQIA+ sports community.

As our primary requirement in traversing our COMM 154 journey, we are tasked to make a narrative sharing our voices and worldviews through discourse, design, and production analysis tools. Conceptualizing our stories through these aspects has allowed us to dissect its meaning-making prowess and significance as it catalyzes to mirror our socially constructed reality. With the help of stratifying semiotic practice, I broke down my initial proposal that tackles queer representation in the sports arena. Ergo, this first entry serves as a backgrounder on my take on this topic, as it’s very personal and close to my heart. As someone who grew up in a dominantly male-gendered sport, it was a tough journey for me to represent myself authentically. With this narrative, I want to share my insights on this matter and produce a film worth watching to strengthen the gay community. Allow me to share this narrative—my untold story in the world of chess.
