Story time: service dogs and #momgoals
Tumblr media
Shout out to the mom at the ice rink today who not only took the time to explain what a service dog was to her 5 (ish) year old—but also gave one of the best kid-friendly explanations of an anxiety service dog I’ve ever heard.
Post initial dog-discussion, the little girl wanted to know what “job” Deacon was doing (Sound carries over the ice and we were the only people there. I was skating, but I could still hear their conversation on the bleachers).
Mom: “I don’t know. Maybe he’s a seizure dog, or an allergy dog, or an anxiety dog.”
Little girl then enquires about each of these things (What’s a seizure? Allergies that make you sneeze? What’s anxiety?) The saint of a mother patiently and clearly explains each of these things. But her explanation for anxiety struck me.
“You know how sometimes you get scared at night and we wrap you up like a burrito and breathe together until you feel better? Sometimes adults feel scared like that too—not because of a bad dream or because something scary is happening, but because their brains trick them into thinking something scary is happening. That’s called anxiety. But adults can’t bring their moms with them everywhere to take care of them when their anxiety gets bad, so sometimes they get a dog who’s trained to take care of them like their mom would.”
I love that.

The 1998 Disney film Mulan featuring the main heroine of the same name produced not only a song to resonate with the transgender community (Reflection, Lea Salonga, 1998), but a juxtaposed commentary on the standards of women and men. In the song Honor to Us All (assorted cast, 1998), the writers have detailed the incredibly high, specific standards set for women. One sees this exemplified in a list that includes being “primped and polished”, and having both a “good fortune and a great hairdo”. The traits of a good wife are then laid out for Mulan, how she must be “calm, obedient, [and] work fast paced; with good breeding and a tiny waist…like a lotus blossom soft and pale.” The writers make absolutely no mistake with the line: “we all must serve our empower…a man by bearing arms, a girl by bearing sons.” Throughout the course of this song, Mulan is told over and over that “a girl can bring her family great honor in one way.” It is clear to both the audience, and Mulan, that while her goal is singular—to marry well—the bar set is not a bar, but an obstacle course. These are the things it means to be a woman. This is what it means to have worth. Meanwhile, in the song I’ll Make a Man Out of You (Donny Osmond, 1998), the standard to become a man is vague, limited, and seemingly something one can learn: “swift as the coursing river, with all the force of a great typhoon, with all the strength of a raging fire, mysterious as the dark side of the moon.” This list offers no real method of evaluation, and, unlike the former song, does not directly attach social value to these traits, simply implying one may not be “suited for the rage of war.” In this essay I will
